1Cantico di Asaf. Ascolta, popolo mio, il mio insegnamento; porgete gli orecchi alle parole della mia bocca! 2Io aprirò la mia bocca per proferir parabole, esporrò i misteri de’ tempi antichi. 3Quel che noi abbiamo udito e conosciuto, e che i nostri padri ci hanno raccontato, 4non lo celeremo ai loro figliuoli; diremo alla generazione avvenire le lodi dell’Eterno, e la sua potenza e le maraviglie ch’egli ha operato. 5Egli stabilì una testimonianza in Giacobbe, e pose una legge in Israele, ch’egli ordinò ai nostri padri di far conoscere ai loro figliuoli, 6perché fossero note alla generazione avvenire, ai figliuoli che nascerebbero, i quali alla loro volta le narrerebbero ai loro figliuoli, 7ond’essi ponessero in Dio la loro speranza e non dimenticassero le opere di Dio, ma osservassero i suoi comandamenti; 8e non fossero come i loro padri, una generazione caparbia e ribelle, una generazione dal cuore incostante, e il cui spirito non fu fedele a Dio. 9I figliuoli di Efraim, gente di guerra, buoni arcieri, voltaron le spalle il dì della battaglia. 10Non osservarono il patto di Dio, e ricusarono di camminar secondo la sua legge; 11e dimenticarono le sue opere e i prodigi ch’egli avea loro fatto vedere. 12Egli avea compiuto maraviglie in presenza de’ loro padri, nel paese d’Egitto, nelle campagne di Zoan. 13Fendé il mare e li fece passare, e fermò le acque come in un mucchio. 14Di giorno li guidò con una nuvola, e tutta la notte con una luce di fuoco. 15Schiantò rupi nel deserto, e li abbeverò copiosamente, come da gorghi. 16Fece scaturire ruscelli dalla roccia e ne fece scender dell’acque a guisa di fiumi. 17Ma essi continuarono a peccare contro di lui, a ribellarsi contro l’Altissimo, nel deserto; 18e tentarono Dio in cuor loro, chiedendo cibo a lor voglia. 19E parlarono contro Dio, dicendo: Potrebbe Dio imbandirci una mensa nel deserto? 20Ecco, egli percosse la roccia e ne colarono acque, ne traboccaron torrenti; potrebb’egli darci anche del pane, e provveder di carne il suo popolo? 21Perciò l’Eterno, avendoli uditi, s’adirò fieramente, e un fuoco s’accese contro Giacobbe, e l’ira sua si levò contro Israele, 22perché non aveano creduto in Dio, né avevano avuto fiducia nella sua salvazione; 23eppure egli comandò alle nuvole di sopra, e aprì le porte del cielo, 24e fece piover su loro manna da mangiare, e dette loro del frumento del cielo. 25L’uomo mangiò del pane dei potenti; egli mandò loro del cibo a sazietà. 26Fece levare in cielo il vento orientale, e con la sua potenza addusse il vento di mezzodì; 27fece piover su loro della carne come polvere, degli uccelli alati, numerosi come la rena del mare; 28e li fece cadere in mezzo al loro campo, d’intorno alle loro tende. 29Così essi mangiarono e furon ben satollati, e Dio mandò loro quel che aveano bramato. 30Non si erano ancora distolti dalle loro brame, avevano ancora il loro cibo in bocca, 31quando l’ira di Dio si levò contro loro, e ne uccise tra i più fiorenti, e abbatté i giovani d’Israele. 32Con tutto ciò peccarono ancora, e non credettero alle sue maraviglie. 33Ond’egli consumò i loro giorni in vanità, e i loro anni in ispaventi. 34Quand’ei li uccideva, essi lo ricercavano e tornavano bramosi di ritrovare Iddio; 35e si ricordavano che Dio era la loro ròcca, l’Iddio altissimo il loro redentore. 36Essi però lo lusingavano con la loro bocca, e gli mentivano con la loro lingua. 37Il loro cuore non era diritto verso lui, e non eran fedeli al suo patto. 38Ma egli, che è pietoso, che perdona l’iniquità e non distrugge il peccatore, più volte rattenne la sua ira, e non lasciò divampare tutto il suo cruccio. 39Ei si ricordò ch’essi erano carne, un fiato che passa e non ritorna. 40Quante volte si ribellarono a lui nel deserto, e lo contristarono nella solitudine! 41E tornarono a tentare Iddio e a provocare il Santo d’Israele. 42Non si ricordaron più della sua mano, del giorno in cui egli li liberò dal nemico, 43quando operò i suoi miracoli in Egitto, e i suoi prodigi nelle campagne di Zoan; 44mutò i loro fiumi in sangue, e i loro rivi in guisa che non potean più bere; 45mandò contro loro mosche velenose che li divoravano, e rane che li distruggevano; 46dette il loro raccolto ai bruchi e la loro fatica alle locuste; 47distrusse le loro vigne con la gragnuola e i loro sicomori coi grossi chicchi d’essa; 48abbandonò il loro bestiame alla grandine e le lor gregge ai fulmini. 49Scatenò su loro l’ardore del suo cruccio, ira, indignazione e distretta, una torma di messaggeri di malanni. 50Dette libero corso alla sua ira; non preservò dalla morte la loro anima, ma abbandonò la loro vita alla pestilenza. 51Percosse tutti i primogeniti d’Egitto, le primizie del vigore nelle tende di Cham; 52ma fece partire il suo popolo a guisa di pecore, e lo condusse a traverso il deserto come una mandra. 53Lo guidò sicuramente sì che non ebbero da spaventarsi, mentre il mare inghiottiva i loro nemici. 54Li fece arrivare alla sua santa frontiera, alla montagna che la sua destra avea conquistato. 55Scacciò le nazioni dinanzi a loro, ne assegnò loro a sorte il paese quale eredità, e nelle tende d’esse fece abitare le tribù d’Israele. 56E nondimeno tentarono l’Iddio altissimo e si ribellarono e non osservarono le sue testimonianze. 57Si trassero indietro e furono sleali come i loro padri; si rivoltarono come un arco fallace; 58lo provocarono ad ira coi loro alti luoghi, lo mossero a gelosia con le loro sculture. 59Dio udì questo, e si adirò, prese Israele in grande avversione, 60onde abbandonò il tabernacolo di Silo, la tenda ov’era dimorato fra gli uomini; 61e lasciò menare la sua Forza in cattività, e lasciò cader la sua Gloria in man del nemico. 62Abbandonò il suo popolo alla spada, e s’adirò contro la sua eredità. 63Il fuoco consumo i loro giovani, e le loro vergini non ebber canto nuziale. 64I loro sacerdoti caddero per la spada, e le loro vedove non fecer lamento. 65Poi il Signore si risvegliò come uno che dormisse, come un prode che grida eccitato dal vino. 66E percosse i suoi nemici alle spalle, e mise loro addosso un eterno vituperio. 67Ma ripudiò la tenda di Giuseppe, e non elesse la tribù di Efraim; 68ma elesse la tribù di Giuda, il monte di Sion ch’egli amava. 69Edificò il suo santuario a guisa de’ luoghi eccelsi, come la terra ch’egli ha fondata per sempre. 70Elesse Davide, suo servitore, lo prese dagli ovili; 71lo trasse di dietro alle pecore lattanti, per pascere Giacobbe suo popolo, ed Israele sua eredità. 72Ed egli li pasturò secondo l’integrità del suo cuore, e li guidò con mano assennata.
1Hear my teaching, my people. Turn your ears to the words of my mouth. 2I will open my mouth in a parable. I will utter dark sayings of old, 3Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. 4We will not hide them from their children, telling to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh, his strength, and his wondrous works that he has done. 5For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a teaching in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children; 6that the generation to come might know, even the children who should be born; who should arise and tell their children, 7that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments, 8and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God. 9The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. 10They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law. 11They forgot his doings, his wondrous works that he had shown them. 12He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. 13He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap. 14In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire. 15He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths. 16He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. 17Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert. 18They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire. 19Yes, they spoke against God. They said, “Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? 20Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide flesh for his people?” 21Therefore Yahweh heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel, 22because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation. 23Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven. 24He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky. 25Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full. 26He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind. 27He rained also flesh on them as the dust; winged birds as the sand of the seas. 28He let them fall in the midst of their camp, around their habitations. 29So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire. 30They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths, 31when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their fattest, and struck down the young men of Israel. 32For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works. 33Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror. 34When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly. 35They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer. 36But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue. 37For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant. 38But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath. 39He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again. 40How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert! 41They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel. 42They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary; 43how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan, 44he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink. 45He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. 46He gave also their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust. 47He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost. 48He gave over their livestock also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. 49He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil. 50He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence, 51and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham. 52But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. 53He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken. 55He also drove out the nations before them, allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents. 56Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies; 57but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were turned aside like a deceitful bow. 58For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images. 59When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel; 60So that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men; 61and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand. 62He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance. 63Fire devoured their young men. Their virgins had no wedding song. 64Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep. 65Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine. 66He struck his adversaries backward. He put them to a perpetual reproach. 67Moreover he rejected the tent of Joseph, and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim, 68But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved. 69He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever. 70He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds; 71from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance. 72So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

O mijn volk! neem mijn leer ter oren; neigt ulieder oor tot de redenen mijns monds. 2Ik zal mijn mond opendoen met spreuken; ik zal verborgenheden overvloediglijk uitstorten, van ouds her; 3Die wij gehoord hebben en weten ze, en onze vaders ons verteld hebben. 4Wij zullen het niet verbergen voor hun kinderen, voor het navolgende geslacht, vertellende de loffelijkheden des HEEREN, en Zijn sterkheid, en Zijn wonderen, die Hij gedaan heeft. 5Want Hij heeft een getuigenis opgericht in Jakob, en een wet gesteld in Israel; die Hij onzen vaderen geboden heeft, dat zij ze hun kinderen zouden bekend maken; 6Opdat het navolgende geslacht die weten zou, de kinderen, die geboren zouden worden; en zouden opstaan, en vertellen ze hun kinderen; 7En dat zij hun hoop op God zouden stellen, en Gods daden niet vergeten, maar Zijn geboden bewaren; 8En dat zij niet zouden worden gelijk hun vaders, een wederhorig en wederspannig geslacht; een geslacht, dat zijn hart niet richtte, en welks geest niet getrouw was met God. 9(De kinderen van Efraim, gewapende boogschutters, keerden om ten dage des strijds.) 10Zij hielden Gods verbond niet, en weigerden te wandelen in Zijn wet. 11En zij vergaten Zijn daden, en Zijn wonderen, die Hij hun had doen zien. 12Voor hun vaderen had Hij wonder gedaan, in Egypteland, in het veld van Zoan. 13Hij kliefde de zee, en deed er hen doorgaan; en de wateren deed Hij staan als een hoop. 14En Hij leidde hen des daags met een wolk, en den gansen nacht met een licht des vuurs. 15Hij kliefde de rotsstenen in de woestijn, en drenkte hen overvloedig, als uit afgronden. 16Want Hij bracht stromen voort uit de steenrots, en deed de wateren afdalen als rivieren. 17Nog voeren zij wijders voort tegen Hem te zondigen, verbitterende den Allerhoogste in de dorre wildernis. 18En zij verzochten God in hun hart, begerende spijs naar hun lust. 19En zij spraken tegen God, zij zeiden: Zou God een tafel kunnen toerichten in de woestijn? 20Ziet, Hij heeft den rotssteen geslagen, dat er wateren uitvloeiden, en beken overvloediglijk uitbraken, zou Hij ook brood kunnen geven? Zou Hij Zijn volke vlees toebereiden? 21Daarom hoorde de HEERE, en werd verbolgen; en een vuur werd ontstoken tegen Jakob, en toorn ging ook op tegen Israel; 22Omdat zij in God niet geloofden, en op Zijn heil niet vertrouwden. 23Daar Hij den wolken van boven gebood, en de deuren des hemels opende; 24En regende op hen het Man om te eten, en gaf hun hemels koren. 25Een iegelijk at het brood der Machtigen; Hij zond hun teerkost tot verzadiging. 26Hij dreef den oostenwind voort in den hemel, en voerde den zuidenwind aan door Zijn sterkte; 27En regende op hen vlees als stof, en gevleugeld gevogelte als zand der zeeen; 28En deed het vallen in het midden zijns legers, rondom zijn woningen. 29Toen aten zij, en werden zeer zat; zodat Hij hun hun lust toebracht. 30Zij waren nog niet vervreemd van hun lust; hun spijs was nog in hun mond, 31Als Gods toorn tegen hen opging, dat Hij van hun vetsten doodde, en de uitgelezenen van Israel nedervelde. 32Boven dit alles zondigden zij nog, en geloofden niet, door Zijn wonderen. 33Dies deed Hij hun dagen vergaan in ijdelheid, en hun jaren in verschrikking. 34Als Hij hen doodde, zo vraagden zij naar Hem, en keerden weder, en zochten God vroeg; 35En gedachten, dat God hun Rotssteen was, en God, de Allerhoogste, hun Verlosser. 36En zij vleiden Hem met hun mond, en logen Hem met hun tong. 37Want hun hart was niet recht met Hem, en zij waren niet getrouw in Zijn verbond. 38Doch Hij, barmhartig zijnde, verzoende de ongerechtigheid, en verdierf hen niet; maar wendde dikwijls Zijn toorn af, en wekte Zijn ganse grimmigheid niet op. 39En Hij dacht, dat zij vlees waren, een wind, die henengaat en niet wederkeert. 40Hoe dikwijls verbitterden zij Hem in de woestijn, deden Hem smart aan in de wildernis! 41Want zij kwamen alweder, en verzochten God, en stelden den Heilige Israels een perk. 42Zij dachten niet aan Zijn hand, aan den dag, toen Hij hen van den wederpartijder verloste; 43Hoe Hij Zijn tekenen stelde in Egypte, en Zijn wonderheden in het veld van Zoan; 44En hun vloeden in bloed veranderde, en hun stromen, opdat zij niet zouden drinken. 45Hij zond een vermenging van ongedierte onder hen, dat hen verteerde, en vorsen, die hen verdierven. 46En Hij gaf hun gewas den kruidworm, en hun arbeid den sprinkhaan. 47Hij doodde hun wijnstok door den hagel, en hun wilde vijgebomen door vurigen hagelsteen. 48Ook gaf Hij hun vee den hagel over, en hun beesten aan de vurige kolen. 49Hij zond onder hen de hittigheid Zijns toorns, verbolgenheid, en verstoordheid, en benauwdheid, met uitzending der boden van veel kwaads. 50Hij woog een pad voor Zijn toorn; Hij onttrok hun ziel niet van den dood; en hun gedierte gaf Hij aan de pestilentie over. 51En Hij sloeg al het eerstgeborene in Egypte, het beginsel der krachten in de tenten van Cham. 52En Hij voerde Zijn volk als schapen, en leidde hen, als een kudde, in de woestijn. 53Ja, Hij leidde hen zeker, zodat zij niet vreesden; want de zee had hun vijanden overdekt. 54En Hij bracht hen tot de landpale Zijner heiligheid, tot dezen berg, dien Zijn rechterhand verkregen heeft. 55En Hij verdreef voor hun aangezicht de heidenen, en deed hen vallen in het snoer hunner erfenis, en deed de stammen Israels in hun tenten wonen. 56Maar zij verzochten en verbitterden God, den Allerhoogste, en onderhielden Zijn getuigenissen niet. 57En zij weken terug, en handelden trouwelooslijk, gelijk hun vaders; zij zijn omgekeerd, als een bedriegelijke boog. 58En zij verwekten Hem tot toorn door hun hoogten, en verwekten Hem tot ijver door hun gesneden beelden. 59God hoorde het en werd verbolgen, en versmaadde Israel zeer. 60Dies verliet Hij den tabernakel te Silo, de tent, die Hij tot een woning gesteld had onder de mensen. 61En Hij gaf Zijn sterkte in de gevangenis, en Zijn heerlijkheid in de hand des wederpartijders. 62En Hij leverde Zijn volk over ten zwaarde, en werd verbolgen tegen Zijn erfenis. 63Het vuur verteerde hun jongelingen, en hun jonge dochters werden niet geprezen. 64Hun priesters vielen door het zwaard, en hun weduwen weenden niet. 65Toen ontwaakte de Heere, als een slapende, als een held, die juicht van den wijn. 66En Hij sloeg Zijn wederpartijders aan het achterste; Hij deed hun eeuwige smaadheid aan. 67Doch Hij verwierp de tent van Jozef, en den stam van Efraim verkoos Hij niet. 68Maar Hij verkoos den stam van Juda, den berg Sion, dien Hij liefhad. 69En Hij bouwde Zijn heiligdom als hoogten, als de aarde, die Hij gegrond heeft in eeuwigheid. 70En Hij verkoos Zijn knecht David, en nam hem van de schaapskooien; 71Van achter de zogende schapen deed Hij hem komen, om te weiden Jakob, Zijn volk, en Israel, Zijn erfenis. 72Ook heeft hij hen geweid naar de oprechtheid zijns harten, en heeft hen geleid met een zeer verstandig beleid zijner handen.
