1E tu pronunzia una lamentazione sui principi d’Israele, e di’: 2Che cos’era tua madre? Una leonessa. Fra i leoni stava accovacciata; in mezzo ai leoncelli, allevava i suoi piccini. 3Allevò uno de’ suoi piccini, il quale divenne un leoncello, imparò a sbranar la preda, e divorò gli uomini. 4Ma le nazioni ne sentiron parlare, ed ei fu preso nella lor fossa; lo menaron, con de’ raffi alle mascelle, nel paese d’Egitto. 5E quando ella vide che aspettava invano e la sua speranza era delusa, prese un altro de’ suoi piccini, e ne fece un leoncello. 6Questo andava e veniva fra i leoni, e divenne un leoncello; imparò a sbranar la preda, e divorò gli uomini. 7Devastò i loro palazzi, desolò le loro città; il paese, con tutto quello che conteneva, fu atterrito al rumore dei suoi ruggiti. 8Ma da tutte le provincie all’intorno le nazioni gli diedero addosso, gli tesero contro le loro reti, e fu preso nella loro fossa. 9Lo misero in una gabbia con dei raffi alle mascelle e lo menarono al re di Babilonia; lo menarono in una fortezza, perché la sua voce non fosse più udita sui monti d’Israele. 10Tua madre era, come te, simile a una vigna, piantata presso alle acque; era feconda, ricca di tralci, per l’abbondanza dell’acque. 11aveva de’ rami forti, da servire di scettri a sovrani; s’ergeva nella sua sublimità, fra il folto dei tralci; era appariscente per la sua elevatezza, per la moltitudine de’ suoi sarmenti. 12Ma è stata divelta con furore, e gettata a terra; il vento orientale ne ha seccato il frutto, i rami forti ne sono stati rotti e seccati, il fuoco li ha divorati. 13Ed ora è piantata nel deserto in un suolo arido ed assetato; 14un fuoco è uscito dal suo ramo fronzuto, e ne ha divorato il frutto, sì che non v’è in essa più ramo forte né scettro per governare". Questa la lamentazione, ch’è diventata una lamentazione.
1Moreover, take up a lamentation for the princes of Israel, 2and say, What was your mother? A lioness: she couched among lions, in the midst of the young lions she nourished her cubs. 3She brought up one of her cubs: he became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 4The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit; and they brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt. 5Now when she saw that she had waited, and her hope was lost, then she took another of her cubs, and made him a young lion. 6He went up and down among the lions; he became a young lion, and he learned to catch the prey; he devoured men. 7He knew their palaces, and laid waste their cities; and the land was desolate, and its fullness, because of the noise of his roaring. 8Then the nations set against him on every side from the provinces; and they spread their net over him; he was taken in their pit. 9They put him in a cage with hooks, and brought him to the king of Babylon; they brought him into strongholds, that his voice should no more be heard on the mountains of Israel. 10Your mother was like a vine, in your blood, planted by the waters: it was fruitful and full of branches by reason of many waters. 11It had strong rods for the scepters of those who bore rule, and their stature was exalted among the thick boughs, and they were seen in their height with the multitude of their branches. 12But it was plucked up in fury, it was cast down to the ground, and the east wind dried up its fruit: its strong rods were broken off and withered; the fire consumed them. 13Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land. 14Fire is gone out of the rods of its branches, it has devoured its fruit, so that there is in it no strong rod to be a scepter to rule. This is a lamentation, and shall be for a lamentation.

Een leeuwin, onder de leeuwen nederliggende; zij bracht haar welpen op in het midden der jonge leeuwen. 3Zij toog nu een van haar welpen op; het werd een jonge leeuw, die leerde roof te roven, hij at mensen op. 4Dit hoorden de volken van hem, hij werd gegrepen in hun groeve; en zij brachten hem met haken naar Egypteland. 5Zij nu ziende, dat zij in hope was geweest, doch haar verwachting verloren was, zo nam zij een ander van haar welpen, hetwelk zij tot een jongen leeuw stelde. 6Deze wandelde steeds onder de leeuwen, werd een jonge leeuw, en leerde roof te roven, hij at mensen op. 7Hij bekende zijn weduwen, en hij verwoestte hun steden; zodat het land en zijn volheid ontzet werd van de stem zijner brulling. 8Toen begaven zich de volken tegen hem rondom uit de landschappen, en zij spreidden hun net over hem uit; in hun groeve werd hij gegrepen. 9En zij stelden hem in gesloten bewaring met haken, opdat zij hem brachten tot den koning van Babel; zij brachten hem in vestingen, opdat zijn stem niet meer gehoord wierde op de bergen Israels. 10Uw moeder was als een wijnstok in uw stilheid, geplant bij wateren; hij was vruchtbaar en vol ranken vanwege vele wateren. 11En hij had sterke roeden tot scepteren der heersers, en de stam van elke roede werd hoog tussen de dichte takken; en hij werd gezien door zijn hoogte, met de menigte zijner takken. 12Maar hij werd door grimmigheid uitgerukt, en ter aarde geworpen, en de oostenwind heeft zijn vrucht verdroogd; zijn sterke roeden zijn afgebroken en zijn verdroogd; het vuur heeft ze verteerd. 13En nu is hij geplant in een woestijn, in een dor en dorstig land. 14Daartoe is een vuur uitgegaan uit een roede zijner ranken, dat zijn vrucht verteerd heeft; zodat aan hem geen sterke roede is tot een scepter, om te heersen. Dit is een weeklage, en is tot een weeklage geworden.
