1Có lời Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng ta rằng: 2Hỡi con người, hãy nói cùng con cái dân ngươi mà rằng: Khi ta sai gươm đến trên một đất nào, và dân đất ấy chọn một người trong chúng nó để đặt làm kẻ canh giữ, 3nếu người nầy thấy gươm đến trong đất, thì thổi kèn để răn bảo dân sự. 4Bấy giờ, hễ ai nghe tiếng kèn mà không chịu răn bảo, và nếu gươm đến bắt lấy nó, thì máu của người ấy sẽ đổ lại trên nó; 5vì nó có nghe tiếng kèn mà không chịu răn bảo, vậy máu nó đổ lại trên nó; nhưng nếu nó chịu răn bảo thì cứu được mạng sống mình. 6Nhưng nếu kẻ canh giữ thấy gươm đến mà không thổi kèn, đến nỗi dân sự chẳng được răn bảo, và gươm đến mà cất sự sống của người nầy hoặc người kia đi, thì người đó sẽ chết trong sự gian ác mình; song ta sẽ đòi lại máu nó nơi người canh giữ. 7Nầy, hỡi con người, ta đã lập ngươi được làm kẻ canh giữ cho nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên; nên hãy nghe lời từ miệng ta, và thay ta răn bảo trước cho chúng nó. 8Khi ta phán cùng kẻ dữ rằng: Hỡi kẻ dữ, mầy chắc chết! nếu ngươi không răn bảo để cho kẻ dữ xây bỏ đường lối xấu của nó, thì kẻ dự ấy sẽ chết trong sự gian ác mình; nhưng ta sẽ đòi máu nó nơi tay ngươi. 9Nếu, trái lại, ngươi đã răn bảo kẻ dữ đặng xây bỏ đường lối xấu của nó mà nó không xây bỏ, thì nó sẽ chết trong sự gian ác nó, còn ngươi đã giải cứu mạng sống mình. 10Hỡi con người, hãy nói cùng nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên rằng: Các ngươi nói như vầy mà rằng: Vì gian ác và tội lỗi chúng tôi chất nặng trên chúng tôi, và chúng tôi hao mòn vì cớ nó, thì thế nào chúng tôi còn sống được? 11Hãy nói cùng chúng nó rằng: Chúa Giê-hô-va phán: Thật như ta hằng sống, ta chẳng lấy sự kẻ dữ chết làm vui, nhưng vui về nó xây bỏ đường lối mình và được sống. Các ngươi khá xây bỏ, xây bỏ đường lối xấu của mình. Sao các ngươi muốn chết, hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên? 12Hỡi con người, khá nói cùng con cái của dân ngươi rằng: Sự công bình của người công bình sẽ không cứu được nó trong ngày nó phạm tội, và sự dữ của kẻ dữ sẽ không làm cho nó sa ngã nơi ngày nó đã xây bỏ sự dữ ấy, cũng như người công bình sẽ không nhờ sự công bình đã qua rồi mà sống được nơi ngày mình phạm tội. 13Dầu mà ta có nói với người công bình rằng nó chắc sẽ sống, nếu nó cậy sự công bình mình mà phạm tội, thì sẽ không nhớ đến một việc công bình nào của nó nữa; nhưng nó sẽ chết trong sự gian ác mình đã phạm. 14Khi ta nói cùng kẻ dữ rằng: Mầy chắc chết! nếu kẻ dữ ấy xây bỏ tội lỗi mình, theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật; 15nếu nó trả lại của cầm, đền bồi vật nó đã cướp lấy, bước theo lệ luật của sự sống, và không phạm sự gian ác nữa, thì chắc nó sẽ sống và không chết đâu. 16Chẳng có một tội nào nó đã phạm sẽ được nhớ lại nghịch cùng nó; nó đã làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật, chắc nó sẽ sống. 17Nhưng con cái của dân ngươi nói rằng: Ðường của Chúa không bằng phẳng. Ấy là được của chúng nó bằng phẳng cho chúng nó! 18Nếu người công bình xây bỏ sự công bình của mình mà phạm sự gian ác, thì nó sẽ chết trong đó. 19Nếu kẻ dữ xây bỏ sự dữ của mình mà làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật, ấy là bởi cớ đó mà nó sẽ sống. 20Nhưng các ngươi nói rằng: Ðường của Chúa không bằng phẳng! Hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, ta sẽ xét đoán các ngươi, mỗi người theo việc làm của nó. 21Năm thứ mười hai sau khi chúng ta bị bắt làm phu tù, ngày mồng năm tháng mười, một người đã trốn khỏi Giê-ru-sa-lem đến nói cùng ta rằng: Thành hãm rồi! 22Vả! buổi chiều trước khi người đi trốn ấy chưa đến, thì tay Ðức Giê-hô-va ở trên ta; và Ngài đã mở miệng ta cho đến khi sớm mai người ấy đến cùng ta; thì miệng ta đã được mở, ta không câm nữa. 23Có lời Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng ta rằng: 24Hỡi con người, những kẻ ở trong nơi đổ nát chất đống trên đất Y-sơ-ra-ên nói rằng: Áp-ra-ham chỉ có một mình mà đã hưởng được đất nầy; chúng ta đông người, thì đất nầy sẽ được ban cho chúng ta làm cơ nghiệp. 25Vậy nên, khá bảo chúng nó rằng: Chúa Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Các ngươi ăn huyết của thú vật, nhướng mắt hướng về thần tượng mình, và làm cho đổ máu; các ngươi há sẽ được đất nầy sao? 26Các ngươi cậy gươm mình, phạm những điều gớm ghiếc, mỗi người trong các ngươi làm nhục vợ của kẻ lân cận mình; các ngươi há sẽ được đất nầy sao? 27Vậy ngươi khá nói cùng chúng nó rằng: Chúa Giê-hô-va phán như vầy: Thật như ta hằng sống, những người ở nơi đổ nát chắc sẽ ngã bởi gươm, và ta sẽ phó những kẻ ở ngoài đồng cho thú vật cắn nuốt; còn những kẻ ở trong các đồn lũy hang hố thì sẽ chết dịch. 28Ta sẽ làm đất nầy ra hoang vu và gở lạ; quyền thế nó cậy mà kiêu ngạo sẽ dứt đi; các núi của Y-sơ-ra-ên sẽ hoang vu đến nỗi chẳng có ai qua lại nữa. 29Bấy giờ chúng nó sẽ biết ta la Ðức Giê-hô-va, khi ta đã làm cho đất nầy ra hoang vu và gở lạ, vì cớ mọi sự gớm ghiếc mà chúng nó đã phạm. 30Hỡi con người, những con cái của dân ngươi ở dọc tường thành và cửa các nhà mà nói chuyện về ngươi; chúng nó nói với nhau, mỗi người cùng anh em mình rằng: Xin hãy đến nghe lời ra từ Ðức Giê-hô-va là thể nào! 31Ðoạn chúng nó kéo cả đoàn cả lũ mà đến cùng ngươi; dân ta ngồi trước mặt ngươi, và nghe lời ngươi; nhưng chúng nó không làm theo. Miệng chúng nó tỏ ra nhiều sự yêu mến, mà lòng chúng nó chỉ tìm lợi. 32Nầy, chúng nó coi ngươi như là kẻ hát hay có tiếng vui và kẻ đờn giỏi; chúng nó nghe lời ngươi, nhưng không làm theo. 33Vì vậy, khi tai nạn nầy sẽ đến, và kìa, nó đến, chúng nó sẽ biết đã có một tiên tri ở giữa mình.
1Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 2Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and tell them, When I bring the sword on a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and set him for their watchman; 3if, when he sees the sword come on the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; 4then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and doesn’t take warning, if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be on his own head. 5He heard the sound of the trumpet, and didn’t take warning; his blood shall be on him; whereas if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul. 6But if the watchman sees the sword come, and doesn’t blow the trumpet, and the people aren’t warned, and the sword comes, and take any person from among them; he is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. 7So you, son of man, I have set you a watchman to the house of Israel; therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. 8When I tell the wicked, O wicked man, you shall surely die, and you don’t speak to warn the wicked from his way; that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood will I require at your hand. 9Nevertheless, if you warn the wicked of his way to turn from it, and he doesn’t turn from his way; he shall die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your soul. 10You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: Thus you speak, saying, Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live? 11Tell them, As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn, turn from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel? 12You, son of man, tell the children of your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his disobedience; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he who is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins. 13When I tell the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his righteousness, and commit iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in his iniquity that he has committed, therein shall he die. 14Again, when I say to the wicked, You shall surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; 15if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. 16None of his sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him: he has done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. 17Yet the children of your people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. 18When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die therein. 19When the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. 20Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. House of Israel, I will judge every one of you after his ways. 21In the twelfth year of our captivity, in the tenth month, in the fifth day of the month, one who had escaped out of Jerusalem came to me, saying, The city has been struck. 22Now the hand of Yahweh had been on me in the evening, before he who was escaped came; and he had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more mute. 23Yahweh’s word came to me, saying, 24Son of man, they who inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance. 25Therefore tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood: and shall you possess the land? 26You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor’s wife: and shall you possess the land? 27You shall tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: As I live, surely those who are in the waste places shall fall by the sword; and him who is in the open field will I give to the animals to be devoured; and those who are in the strongholds and in the caves shall die of the pestilence. 28I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment; and the pride of her power shall cease; and the mountains of Israel shall be desolate, so that no one shall pass through. 29Then shall they know that I am Yahweh, when I have made the land a desolation and an astonishment, because of all their abominations which they have committed. 30As for you, son of man, the children of your people talk of you by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, everyone to his brother, saying, Please come and hear what is the word that comes out from Yahweh. 31They come to you as the people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but don’t do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their gain. 32Behold, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they don’t do them. 33When this comes to pass, (behold, it comes), then shall they know that a prophet has been among them.
1En des HEEREN woord geschiedde tot mij, zeggende: 2Mensenkind! spreek tot de kinderen uws volks, en zeg tot hen: Wanneer Ik het zwaard over enig land breng, en het volk des lands een man uit hun einden nemen, en dien voor zich tot een wachter stellen; 3En hij het zwaard ziet komen over het land, en blaast met de bazuin, en waarschuwt het volk; 4En een, die het geluid der bazuin hoort, wel hoort, maar zich niet laat waarschuwen; en het zwaard komt, en neemt hem weg, diens bloed is op zijn hoofd. 5Hij hoorde het geluid der bazuin, maar liet zich niet waarschuwen, zijn bloed is op hem; maar hij, die zich laat waarschuwen, behoudt zijn ziel. 6Wanneer daarentegen de wachter het zwaard ziet komen, en blaast niet met de bazuin, zodat het volk niet is gewaarschuwd; en het zwaard komt, en neemt een ziel uit hen weg; die is wel in zijn ongerechtigheid weggenomen, maar zijn bloed zal Ik van des hand des wachters eisen. 7Gij nu, o mensenkind! Ik heb u tot een wachter gesteld over het huis Israels; zo zult gij het woord uit Mijn mond horen, en hen van Mijnentwege waarschuwen. 8Als Ik tot den goddeloze zeg: O goddeloze, gij zult den dood sterven! en gij spreekt niet, om den goddeloze van zijn weg af te manen; die goddeloze zal in zijn ongerechtigheid sterven, maar zijn bloed zal Ik van uw hand eisen. 9Maar als gij den goddeloze van zijn weg afmaant, dat hij zich van dien bekere, en hij zich van zijn weg niet bekeert, zo zal hij in zijn ongerechtigheid sterven; maar gij hebt uw ziel bevrijd. 10Daarom, gij mensenkind! zeg tot het huis Israels: Gijlieden spreekt aldus, zeggende: Dewijl onze overtredingen en onze zonden op ons zijn, en wij in dezelve versmachten, hoe zouden wij dan leven? 11Zeg tot hen: Zo waarachtig als Ik leef, spreekt de Heere HEERE, zo Ik lust heb in den dood des goddelozen! maar daarin heb Ik lust, dat de goddeloze zich bekere van zijn weg en leve. Bekeert u, bekeert u van uw boze wegen, want waarom zoudt gij sterven, o huis Israels? 12Gij dan, o mensenkind! zeg tot de kinderen uws volks: De gerechtigheid des rechtvaardigen zal hem niet redden ten dage zijner overtreding; en aangaande de goddeloosheid des goddelozen, hij zal om dezelve niet vallen, ten dage als hij zich van zijn goddeloosheid bekeert; en de rechtvaardige zal niet kunnen leven door dezelve zijn gerechtigheid, ten dage als hij zondigt. 13Als Ik tot den rechtvaardige zeg, dat hij zekerlijk leven zal, en hij op zijn gerechtigheid vertrouwt, en onrecht doet, zo zullen al zijn gerechtigheden niet gedacht worden, maar in zijn onrecht, dat hij doet, daarin zal hij sterven. 14Als Ik ook tot den goddeloze zeg: Gij zult den dood sterven! en hij zich van zijn zonde bekeert, en recht en gerechtigheid doet; 15Geeft de goddeloze het pand weder, betaalt hij het geroofde, wandelt hij in de inzettingen des levens, zodat hij geen onrecht doet; hij zal zekerlijk leven, hij zal niet sterven. 16Al zijn zonden, die hij gezondigd heeft, zullen hem niet gedacht worden; hij heeft recht en gerechtigheid gedaan, hij zal zekerlijk leven. 17Nog zeggen de kinderen uws volks: De weg des Heeren is niet recht; daar toch hun eigen weg niet recht is. 18Als de rechtvaardige afkeert van zijn gerechtigheid, en doet onrecht, zo zal hij daarin sterven. 19En als de goddeloze zich bekeert van zijn goddeloosheid, en doet recht en gerechtigheid, zo zal hij daarin leven. 20Nog zegt gij: De weg des Heeren is niet recht; Ik zal ulieden richten, een ieder naar zijn wegen, o huis Israels! 21En het geschiedde in het twaalfde jaar onzer gevankelijke wegvoering, in de tiende maand, op den vijfden der maand, dat er een tot mij kwam, die van Jeruzalem ontkomen was, zeggende: De stad is geslagen. 22Nu was de hand des HEEREN op mij geweest des avonds, eer die ontkomene kwam, en had mijn mond opengedaan, totdat hij des morgens tot mij kwam. Alzo werd mijn mond opengedaan, en ik was niet meer stom. 23Toen geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot mij, zeggende: 24Mensenkind! de inwoners van die woeste plaatsen in het land Israels spreken, zeggende: Abraham was een enig man, en bezat dit land erfelijk; maar onzer zijn velen; het land is ons gegeven tot een erfelijke bezitting. 25Daarom zeg tot hen: Zo zegt de Heere HEERE: Gij eet vlees met het bloed, en heft uw ogen op tot uw drekgoden, en vergiet bloed; en zoudt gij het land erfelijk bezitten? 26Gij staat op ulieder zwaard; gij doet gruwel, en verontreinigt, een ieder de huisvrouw zijns naasten; en zoudt gij het land erfelijk bezitten? 27Alzo zult gij tot hen zeggen: De Heere HEERE zegt alzo: Zo waarachtig als Ik leef, indien niet, die in die woeste plaatsen zijn, door het zwaard zullen vallen, en zo Ik niet dien, die in het open veld is, het wild gedierte overgeve, dat het hem vrete, en die in de vestingen en in de spelonken zijn, door de pestilentie zullen sterven! 28Want Ik zal het land tot een verwoesting en een schrik stellen, en de hovaardij zijner sterkte zal ophouden; en de bergen Israels zullen woest zijn, dat er niemand overga. 29Dan zullen zij weten, dat Ik de HEERE ben, als Ik het land tot een verwoesting en een schrik zal gesteld hebben, om al hun gruwelen, die zij gedaan hebben. 30En gij, o mensenkind! de kinderen uws volks spreken steeds van u bij de wanden en in de deuren der huizen; en de een spreekt met den ander, een iegelijk met zijn broeder, zeggende: Komt toch en hoort, wat het woord zij, dat van den HEERE voortkomt. 31En zij komen tot u, gelijk het volk pleegt te komen, en zitten voor uw aangezicht als Mijn volk, en horen uw woorden, maar zij doen ze niet; want zij maken liefkozingen met hun mond, maar hun hart wandelt hun gierigheid na. 32En ziet, gij zijt hun als een lied der minnen, als een, die schoon van stem is, of die wel speelt; daarom horen zij uw woorden, maar zij doen ze niet. 33Maar als dat komt (zie, het zal komen!) dan zullen zij weten, dat er een profeet in het midden van hen geweest is.
