1Lại có lời Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng ta như vầy: 2Các ngươi dùng câu tục ngữ nầy về đất Y-sơ-ra-ên, rằng: Cha ăn trái nho chua, mà con ghê răng, câu đó có nghĩa gì? 3Chúa Giê-hô-va phán: Thật như ta hằng sống, các ngươi sẽ không cần dùng câu tục ngữ ấy trong Y-sơ-ra-ên nữa. 4Nầy, mọi linh hồn đều thuộc về ta; linh hồn của cha cũng như linh hồn của con, đều thuộc về ta; linh hồn nào phạm tội thì sẽ chết. 5Nếu người nào là công bình, làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật, 6không ăn trên núi, không ngước mắt trông các thần tượng của nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, không làm nhục vợ kẻ lân cận mình, không lại gần đờn bà đương có kinh nguyệt; 7người mà không làm hại ai, trả của cầm lại cho kẻ mắc nợ, không cướp vật gì của ai, ban bánh cho kẻ đói, mặc áo cho kẻ trần truồng, 8không cho vay mà ăn lời, không lấy thêm, rút tay lại khỏi sự gian ác, theo lẽ thật mà xét đoán trong người nầy với người khác; 9noi theo luật lệ ta và vâng giữ mạng lịnh ta, ăn ở cách thật thà, thì người ấy là người công bình; chắc thật người sẽ sống, Chúa Giê-hô-va phán vậy. 10Nếu người đã sanh con là trộm cướp, làm đổ máu, làm điều nào trong những điều ác đã nói trên kia, 11chẳng làm điều nào trong những điều thiện đã nói trên kia, nhưng đã ăn trên núi, làm nhục vợ kẻ lân cận mình, 12làm hại kẻ nghèo nàn thiếu thốn, cướp vật gì của ai, và không trả của cầm, ngước mắt trông các thần tượng và phạm sự gớm ghiếc, 13cho vay ăn lời và lấy thêm, thì đứa con đó sẽ sống không? Không nó sẽ không sống! Vì nó đã phạm mọi sự gớm ghiếc ấy, chắc thật nó sẽ chết, và máu nó sẽ ở trên nó. 14Nhưng, nếu người ấy sanh con trai, con thấy mọi sự tội cha mình đã phạm, thì lo sợ, không làm điều chi giống như vậy hết; 15nếu con ấy không ăn trên núi, nếu nó không ngước mắt trông thần tượng của nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, nếu nó không làm nhục vợ kẻ lân cận mình, 16nếu nó không làm hại ai, nếu nó không lấy của cầm và không cướp vật gì của ai, nhưng nó ban bánh cho kẻ đói, và mặc áo cho kẻ trần truồng; 17rút tay lại khỏi hại kẻ nghèo, không đòi lời lãi và lấy thêm, vâng giữ mạng lịnh ta và noi theo luật lệ ta, thì đứa con ấy sẽ không chết vì sự gian ác cha nó, mà chắc nó sẽ sống. 18Còn như cha nó đã dùng sự hung bạo ức hiếp, và phạm sự trộm cướp đối với anh em mình, đã làm điều không lành giữa dân sự mình, nầy, chính nó sẽ chết trong sự gian ác mình. 19Các ngươi còn nói rằng: Làm sao đứa con không mang sự gian ác của cha nó? Ấy là đứa con đã làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật; ấy là nó đã giữ hết thảy luật lệ ta và làm theo; chắc thật nó sẽ sống. 20Linh hồn nào phạm tội thì sẽ chết. Con sẽ không mang sự gian ác của cha và cha không mang sự gian ác của con. Sự công bình của người công bình sẽ được kể cho mình, sự dữ của kẻ dữ sẽ chất trên mình. 21Song nếu kẻ dữ xây bỏ hết thảy tội mình đã phạm, nếu nó giữ mọi luật lệ ta, và nếu nó làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật, chắc thật nó sẽ sống và không chết đâu. 22Không có một tội nào nó đã phạm sẽ bị nhớ lại nghịch cùng nó; nó sẽ sống vì cớ sự công bình nó đã làm. 23Chúa Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Ta há có vui chút nào về sự chết của kẻ dữ sao? há chẳng thà vui về sự nó xây bỏ đường lối mình và nó sống sao? 24Nhưng nếu kẻ công bình xây bỏ sự công bình của mình, nếu nó phạm sự gian ác, nếu nó bắt chước mọi sự gớm ghiếc mà kẻ dữ tự làm, thì nó sẽ sống không? Không có một việc công bình nào nó đã làm sẽ được nhớ lại; vì cớ sự phạm pháp mà nó đã làm, và tội lỗi nó đã phạm, nên nó sẽ chết trong đó. 25Các ngươi lại nói rằng: Ðường lối của Chúa là không bằng phẳng! Vậy, hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy nghe: Ðường lối của ta há không bằng phẳng sao? Há chẳng phải đường lối của các ngươi là không bằng phẳng sao? 26Nếu kẻ công bình xây bỏ sự công bình mình, nếu nó phạm sự gian ác, và nếu nó vì cớ ấy mà chết; ấy là vì tội ác nó đã phạm mà nó chết. 27Nếu kẻ dữ xây bỏ sự dữ mình đã phạm, nếu nó làm theo luật pháp và hiệp với lẽ thật, thì nó sẽ cứu linh hồn mình cho được sống. 28Vì nó suy xét và xây bỏ mọi sự phạm pháp mình đã làm, chắc thật nó sẽ sống và không chết đâu. 29Nhưng mà nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên nói rằng: Ðường lối của Chúa là không bằng phẳng. Hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên có phải là đường lối của ta không bằng phẳng sao? Há chẳng phải đường lối của các ngươi là không bằng phẳng sao? 30Vậy nên Chúa Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, ta sẽ đoán xét các ngươi, mỗi người theo việc làm của nó. Hãy trở lại và xây bỏ mọi sự phạm pháp của các ngươi; vậy thì sự gian ác không trở nên cớ hư nát cho các ngươi. 31Hãy liệng xa các ngươi mọi sự phạm pháp mà tự mình đã làm. Hãy làm cho mình lòng mới và thần mới; vì, hỡi nhà Y-sơ-ra-ên, làm sao mà các ngươi muốn chết? 32Chúa Giê-hô-va phán rằng: Thật vậy, ta không vui đâu về sự chết của kẻ phải chết, vậy các ngươi hãy xây lại, mà được sống!
1Yahweh’s word came to me again, saying, 2What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not use this proverb any more in Israel. 4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins, he shall die. 5But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right, 6and has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor’s wife, neither has come near to a woman in her impurity, 7and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 8he who has not lent on interest, neither has taken any increase, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man, 9has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh. 10If he fathers a son who is a robber who sheds blood, and who does any one of these things, 11or who does not do any of those things, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife, 12has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination, 13has lent on interest, and has taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him. 14Now, behold, if he fathers a son, who sees all his father’s sins, which he has done, and fears, and does not such like; 15who has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, has not defiled his neighbor’s wife, 16neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to pledge, neither has taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 17who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who has not received interest nor increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity. 19Yet you say, Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live. 20The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him. 21But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? says the Lord Yahweh; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live? 24But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die. 25Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal? 26When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies therein; in his iniquity that he has done shall he die. 27Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29Yet the house of Israel says, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair? 30Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel? 32For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Yahweh: therefore turn yourselves, and live.
1Verder geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot mij, zeggende: 2Wat is ulieden, dat gij dit spreekwoord gebruikt van het land Israels, zeggende: De vaders hebben onrijpe druiven gegeten, en de tanden der kinderen zijn stomp geworden? 3Zo waarachtig als Ik leef, spreekt de Heere HEERE, zo het ulieden meer gebeuren zal, dit spreekwoord in Israel te gebruiken! 4Ziet, alle zielen zijn Mijne; gelijk de ziel des vaders, alzo ook de ziel des zoons, zijn Mijne; de ziel, die zondigt, die zal sterven. 5Wanneer nu iemand rechtvaardig is, en doet recht en gerechtigheid; 6Niet eet op de bergen, en zijn ogen niet opheft tot de drekgoden van het huis Israels; noch de huisvrouw zijns naasten verontreinigt, noch tot de afgezonderde vrouw nadert; 7En niemand verdrukt, den schuldenaar zijn pand wedergeeft, geen roof rooft, den hongerige zijn brood geeft, en den naakte met kleding bedekt; 8Niet geeft op woeker, noch overwinst neemt, zijn hand van onrecht afkeert, waarachtig recht tussen den een en den anderen oefent; 9In Mijn inzettingen wandelt, en Mijn rechten onderhoudt, om trouwelijk te handelen; die rechtvaardige zal gewisselijk leven, spreekt de Heere HEERE. 10Heeft hij nu een zoon gewonnen, die een inbreker is, die bloed vergiet, die zijn broeder doet een van deze dingen; 11En die al die dingen niet doet; maar eet ook op de bergen, en verontreinigt de huisvrouw zijns naasten; 12Verdrukt den ellendige en den nooddruftige, rooft veel roofs, geeft het pand niet weder, en heft zijn ogen op tot de drekgoden, doet gruwel; 13Geeft op woeker, en neemt overwinst; zou die leven? Hij zal niet leven, al die gruwelen heeft hij gedaan; hij zal voorzeker gedood worden; zijn bloed zal op hem zijn! 14Ziet nu, heeft hij een zoon gewonnen, die al de zonden zijn vaders, die hij doet, aanziet, en toeziet, dat hij dergelijke niet doet; 15Niet eet op de bergen, noch zijn ogen opheft tot de drekgoden van het huis Israels, de huisvrouw zijns naasten niet verontreinigt; 16En niemand verdrukt, het pand niet behoudt, en geen roof rooft, zijn brood den hongerige geeft, en den naakte met kleding bedekt; 17Zijn hand van den ellendige afhoudt, geen woeker noch overwinst neemt, Mijn rechten doet, en in Mijn inzettingen wandelt; die zal niet sterven om de ongerechtigheid zijns vaders; hij zal gewisselijk leven. 18Zijn vader, dewijl hij met onderdrukking onderdrukt heeft, des broeders goed geroofd heeft, en gedaan heeft, dat niet goed was in het midden zijner volken; ziet daar, hij zal sterven in zijn ongerechtigheid. 19Maar gijlieden zegt: Waarom draagt de zoon niet de ongerechtigheid des vaders? Immers zal de zoon, die recht en gerechtigheid gedaan heeft, en al Mijn inzettingen onderhouden, en die gedaan heeft, gewisselijk leven. 20De ziel, die zondigt, die zal sterven; de zoon zal niet dragen de ongerechtigheid des vaders, en de vader zal niet dragen de ongerechtigheid des zoons; de gerechtigheid des rechtvaardigen zal op hem zijn, en de goddeloosheid des goddelozen zal op hem zijn. 21Maar wanneer de goddeloze zich bekeert van al zijn zonden, die hij gedaan heeft, en al Mijn inzettingen onderhoudt, en doet recht en gerechtigheid, hij zal gewisselijk leven, hij zal niet sterven. 22Al zijn overtredingen, die hij gedaan heeft, zullen hem niet gedacht worden; in zijn gerechtigheid, die hij gedaan heeft, zal hij leven. 23Zou Ik enigzins lust hebben aan den dood des goddelozen, spreekt de Heere HEERE; is het niet, als hij zich bekeert van zijn wegen, dat hij leve? 24Maar als de rechtvaardige zich afkeert van zijn gerechtigheid, en onrecht doet, doende naar al de gruwelen, die de goddeloze doet, zou die leven? Al zijn gerechtigheden, die hij gedaan heeft, zullen niet gedacht worden; in zijn overtreding, waardoor hij overtreden heeft, en in zijn zonde, die hij gezondigd heeft, in die zal hij sterven. 25Nog zegt gijlieden: De weg des HEEREN is niet recht; hoort nu, o huis Israels! is Mijn weg niet recht? Zijn niet uw wegen onrecht? 26Als de rechtvaardige zich afkeert van zijn gerechtigheid, en onrecht doet, en sterft in dezelve, hij zal in zijn onrecht, dat hij gedaan heeft, sterven. 27Maar als de goddeloze zich bekeert van zijn goddeloosheid, die hij gedaan heeft, en doet recht en gerechtigheid, die zal zijn ziel in het leven behouden; 28Dewijl hij toeziet, en zich bekeert van al zijn overtredingen, die hij gedaan heeft, hij zal gewisselijk leven, hij zal niet sterven. 29Evenwel zegt het huis Israels: De weg des Heeren is niet recht. Zouden Mijn wegen, o huis Israels, niet recht zijn? Zijn niet uw wegen onrecht? 30Daarom zal Ik u richten, o huis Israels! een ieder naar zijn wegen, spreekt de Heere HEERE, keert weder, en bekeert u van al uw overtredingen, zo zal de ongerechtigheid u niet tot een aanstoot worden. 31Werpt van u weg al uw overtredingen, waardoor gij overtreden hebt, en maakt u een nieuw hart en een nieuwen geest; want waarom zoudt gij sterven, o huis Israels? 32Want Ik heb geen lust aan den dood des stervenden, spreekt de Heere HEERE; daarom bekeert u en leeft.
