1Assim diz o SENHOR: Eis que eu levanto um vento destruidor contra a Babilônia, e contra os moradores de Lebe-Camai. 2E enviarei padejadores à Babilônia, que a padejarão, e esvaziarão sua terra; porque virão contra ela por todos os lados no dia da calamidade. 3Que o flecheiro não arme o seu arco, nem deixes que ponham sua couraça; não poupeis a seus rapazes, destruí todo o seu exército. 4E os mortos cairão na terra dos caldeus, e os perfurados em suas ruas. 5Porque Israel e Judá não foram abandonados por seu Deus, o SENHOR dos exércitos, ainda que sua terra foi cheia de pecado contra o Santo de Israel. 6Fugi do meio de Babilônia, e livrai cada um sua alma; não pereçais por causa de sua maldade; pois é tempo de vingança do SENHOR, em que ele lhe dará o pagamento dela. 7A Babilônia era um copo de ouro na mão do SENHOR, que embriagava toda a terra; de seu vinho beberam as nações; por isso as nações se enlouqueceram. 8Repentinamente Babilônia caiu, e se despedaçou: uivai por ela; tomai bálsamo para sua dor, talvez sare. 9Sararíamos Babilônia, porém ela não se sarou; deixai-a, e vamo-nos cada um a sua terra; pois seu julgamento chegou até o céu, e subiu até as nuvens. 10O SENHOR trouxe à luz nossas justiças; vinde, e contemos em Sião a obra do SENHOR nosso Deus. 11Limpai as flechas, preparai os escudos; o SENHOR levantou o espírito dos reis da Média; pois seu pensamento é contra Babilônia para destruí-la; pois esta é vingança do SENHOR, a vingança de seu templo. 12Levantai bandeira sobre os muros da Babilônia, reforçai a guarda, ponde vigilantes, preparai ciladas; pois assim o SENHOR tanto planejou como fez o que disse sobre os moradores de Babilônia. 13Tu que habitas sobre muitas águas, rica em tesouros, chegou o teu fim, o limite de tua ganância. 14O SENHOR dos exércitos jurou por si mesmo, dizendo : Eu te encherei de homens como de gafanhotos, que darão gritos de guerra contra ti. 15Ele é o que fez a terra com sua força, o que estabeleceu o mundo com sua sabedoria, e estendeu os céus com seu entendimento; 16Quando ele dá sua voz, há um grande estrondo de águas no céu, e faz subir as nuvens desde os confins da terra; ele faz os relâmpagos com a chuva, e tira o vento de seus tesouros. 17Todo homem tem se tornado bruto, e sem conhecimento; envergonha-se todo artífice da imagem de escultura, porque sua imagem de fundição é mentira, e não há espírito nelas. 18Elas são inúteis, obra de enganos; no tempo de seu castigo perecerão. 19A porção de Jacó não é como eles; pois ele é o Formador de tudo; e Israel é a vara de sua herança; EU-SOU dos exércitos é o seu nome. 20Tu és para mim um martelo, e armas de guerra; contigo despedaçarei nações, e contigo destruirei reinos; 21Contigo despedaçarei o cavalo e seus cavaleiro, contigo despedaçarei a carruagem, e os que nela sobem; 22Contigo despedaçarei o homem e a mulher, contigo despedaçarei o velho e o jovem, contigo despedaçarei o rapaz e a moça; 23Contigo despedaçarei o pastor e seu rebanho; contigo despedaçarei o lavrador e suas juntas de bois ; e contigo despedaçarei governadores e príncipes. 24Mas retribuirei à Babilônia e a todos os moradores da Caldeia todo a sua maldade, que fizeram em Sião diante de vossos olhos,diz o SENHOR. 25Eis que eu sou contra ti, ó monte destruidor, que destróis toda a terra,diz o SENHOR, e estenderei minha mão contra ti, e te farei rolar das rochas, e te tonarei um monte queimado. 26E não tomarão de ti pedra para esquina, nem pedra para fundamentos; porque te tornarás em assolações perpétuas,diz o SENHOR. 27Levantai bandeira na terra, tocai trombeta entre as nações, preparai nações contra ela; convocai contra ela os reinos de Ararate, Mini, e Asquenaz; ordenai contra ela capitães, fazei subir cavalos como gafanhotos eriçados. 28Preparai contra ela as nações; os reis da Média, seus capitães, e todos seus chefes, e também toda a terra em que eles governam. 29Então a terra tremerá, e se afligirá; porque todos os pensamentos do SENHOR estão firmes contra a Babilônia, para tornar a terra de Babilônia em desolação, de modo que não haja morador nela . 30Os guerreiros de Babilônia pararam de lutar, ficaram-se nas fortalezas; faltou-lhes sua força, tornaram-se como mulheres; incendiaram-se suas casas, quebraram-se seus ferrolhos. 31Corredor se encontrará com corredor, mensageiro se encontrará com mensageiro, para anunciar ao rei de Babilônia que sua cidade é tomada por todas os lados; 32E os vaus foram tomados, os canaviais foram queimados a fogo, e os homens de guerra foram assombrados. 33Pois assim diz o SENHOR dos exércitos, Deus de Israel: A filha de Babilônia é como uma eira; já é tempo de trilhá-la; daqui a pouco lhe virá o tempo da ceifa. 34Comeu-me, esmagou-me Nabucodonosor rei de Babilônia; tornou-me como um vaso vazio, tragou-me como um chacal, seu ventre se encheu do que eu tinha de melhor, e me lançou fora. 35A violência feita contra mim e minha carne venha sobre a Babilônia, dirá a moradora de Sião; e meu sangue sobre os moradores da Caldeia, dirá Jerusalém. 36Portanto assim diz o SENHOR: Eis que eu defenderei a tua causa, e vingarei por ti; secarei seu mar, e farei que seu manancial fique seco. 37E Babilônia se tornará em amontoados, em morada de chacais, espanto e assovio, sem morador algum. 38Juntamente rugirão como leões; como filhotes de leões bramarão. 39Quando estiverem esquentados, eu lhes porei seus banquetes, e farei com que se embriaguem, para que se alegrem, e durmam um sono eterno, e não despertem,diz o SENHOR. 40Eu os levarei abaixo como cordeiros ao matadouro, como carneiros e bodes. 41Como foi capturada Sesaque, e tomada a que era o louvor de toda a terra! Como Babilônia se tornou em espanto entre as nações! 42O mar subiu sobre a Babilônia; pela multidão de suas ondas foi coberta. 43Suas cidades se tornaram desoladas, uma terra seca e deserta, terra que ninguém habita, nem filho de homem passa por ela. 44E punirei a Bel na Babilônia, e tirarei de sua boca o que tragou; e nunca mais as nações virão a ele; e o muro da Babilônia cairá. 45Saí do meio dela, ó povo meu, e livrai cada um sua alma do ardor da ira do SENHOR. 46E para que vosso coração não perca as forças, e tenhais medo por causa das notícias que forem ouvidas pela terra; pois em um ano virá notícias, e depois em outro ano mais notícias; e haverá violência na terra, dominador sobre dominador. 47Portanto eis que vêm dias em que punirei as imagens de escultura da Babilônia, e toda a sua terra será envergonhada, e todos seus mortos cairão no meio dela. 48E os céus, a terra, e tudo quanto neles há, cantarão vitória sobre a Babilônia; porque do norte virão destruidores contra ela,diz o SENHOR. 49Pois Babilônia cairá por causa dos mortos de Israel, assim como por causa da Babilônia caíram mortos de toda a terra. 50Vós que escapastes do espada, ide embora, não pareis; lembrai-vos do SENHOR até longe, e Jerusalém venha à vossa mente. 51Direis, porém : Estamos envergonhados, porque ouvimos a humilhação; a vergonha cobriu nossos rostos, porque vieram estrangeiros contra os santuários da casa do SENHOR. 52Portanto eis que vêm dias,diz o SENHOR, em que punirei suas imagens de escultura, e em toda a sua terra gemerão os feridos. 53Mesmo se a Babilônia subisse ao céu e se fortificasse no alto seu poder, ainda assim de mim virão destruidores contra ela,diz o SENHOR. 54Ouve-se som de gritos da Babilônia, e grande quebrantamento da terra dos caldeus! 55Pois o SENHOR destrói a Babilônia, e eliminará dela seu grande ruído; e suas ondas bramarão, como muitas águas será o ruído da voz deles: 56Pois o destruidor vem contra ela, contra Babilônia; seus guerreiros serão presos, o arco deles será quebrado; porque o SENHOR, Deus de retribuições, certamente dará a pagamento. 57E embriagarei a seus príncipes e seus sábios, a seus governadores, seus chefes e seus guerreiros; e dormirão sonho perpétuo, e não despertarão, diz o Rei, cujo nome é EU-SOU dos exércitos. 58Assim diz o SENHOR dos exércitos: Os largos muros da Babilônia serão derrubado por completo, e suas altas portas serão incendiadas a fogo; os povos trabalharão para nada, as nações para o fogo, e se cansarão. 59Palavra que o profeta Jeremias enviou a Seraías, filho de Nerias, filho de Maasias, quando ele foi com Zedequias rei de Judá para a Babilônia, no quarto ano de seu reinado. E Seraías era o camareiro-chefe. 60Escreveu, pois, Jeremias em um livro todo o mal que viria sobre a Babilônia, todas estas palavras que estavam escritas contra a Babilônia. 61E Jeremias disse a Seraías: Quando chegares à Babilônia, tu deves ler e dizer todas estas palavras, 62Então dirás: Ó SENHOR, tu falaste sobre este lugar, que o cortarias fora, até não ficar nele morador, nem homem nem animal, e que se tornaria em desolação perpétua. 63E será que, quando acabares de ler este livro, tu o atarás a uma pedra, e o lançarás no meio do Eufrates, 64E dirás: Assim Babilônia será afundada, e não se levantará da calamidade que eu trago sobre ela; e se cansarão. Até aqui são as palavras de Jeremias.
1Thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against those who dwell in Lebkamai, a destroying wind. 2I will send to Babylon strangers, who shall winnow her; and they shall empty her land: for in the day of trouble they shall be against her around. 3Against him who bends let the archer bend his bow, and against him who lifts himself up in his coat of mail: and don’t spare her young men; utterly destroy all her army. 4They shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets. 5For Israel is not forsaken, nor Judah, of his God, of Yahweh of Armies; though their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel. 6Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every man his life; don’t be cut off in her iniquity: for it is the time of Yahweh’s vengeance; he will render to her a recompense. 7Babylon has been a golden cup in Yahweh’s hand, who made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore the nations are mad. 8Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed: wail for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed. 9We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country; for her judgment reaches to heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies. 10Yahweh has produced our righteousness: come, and let us declare in Zion the work of Yahweh our God. 11Make sharp the arrows; hold firm the shields: Yahweh has stirred up the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because his purpose is against Babylon, to destroy it: for it is the vengeance of Yahweh, the vengeance of his temple. 12Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for Yahweh has both purposed and done that which he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon. 13You who dwell on many waters, abundant in treasures, your end has come, the measure of your covetousness. 14Yahweh of Armies has sworn by himself, saying, Surely I will fill you with men, as with the canker worm; and they shall lift up a shout against you. 15He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding has he stretched out the heavens: 16when he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning for the rain, and brings the wind out of his treasuries. 17Every man has become brutish without knowledge. Every goldsmith is disappointed by his image; for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them. 18They are vanity, a work of delusion: in the time of their visitation they shall perish. 19The portion of Jacob is not like these; for he is the former of all things; and is the tribe of his inheritance: Yahweh of Armies is his name. 20You are my battle ax and weapons of war: and with you will I break in pieces the nations; and with you will I destroy kingdoms; 21and with you will I break in pieces the horse and his rider; 22and with you will I break in pieces the chariot and him who rides therein; and with you will I break in pieces man and woman; and with you will I break in pieces the old man and the youth; and with you will I break in pieces the young man and the virgin; 23and with you will I break in pieces the shepherd and his flock; and with you will I break in pieces the farmer and his yoke; and with you will I break in pieces governors and deputies. 24I will render to Babylon and to all the inhabitants of Chaldea all their evil that they have done in Zion in your sight, says Yahweh. 25Behold, I am against you, destroying mountain, says Yahweh, which destroys all the earth; and I will stretch out my hand on you, and roll you down from the rocks, and will make you a burnt mountain. 26They shall not take of you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations; but you shall be desolate for ever, says Yahweh. 27Set up a standard in the land, blow the trumpet among the nations, prepare the nations against her, call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz: appoint a marshal against her; cause the horses to come up as the rough canker worm. 28Prepare against her the nations, the kings of the Medes, its governors, and all its deputies, and all the land of their dominion. 29The land trembles and is in pain; for the purposes of Yahweh against Babylon do stand, to make the land of Babylon a desolation, without inhabitant. 30The mighty men of Babylon have forborne to fight, they remain in their strongholds; their might has failed; they are become as women: her dwelling places are set on fire; her bars are broken. 31One runner will run to meet another, and one messenger to meet another, to show the king of Babylon that his city is taken on every quarter: 32and the passages are seized, and the reeds they have burned with fire, and the men of war are frightened. 33For thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while, and the time of harvest shall come for her. 34Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me, he has made me an empty vessel, he has, like a monster, swallowed me up, he has filled his maw with my delicacies; he has cast me out. 35The violence done to me and to my flesh be on Babylon, shall the inhabitant of Zion say; and, My blood be on the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say. 36Therefore thus says Yahweh: Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her fountain dry. 37Babylon shall become heaps, a dwelling place for jackals, an astonishment, and a hissing, without inhabitant. 38They shall roar together like young lions; they shall growl as lions’ cubs. 39When they are heated, I will make their feast, and I will make them drunken, that they may rejoice, and sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, says Yahweh. 40I will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams with male goats. 41How is Sheshach taken! and the praise of the whole earth seized! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 42The sea has come up on Babylon; she is covered with the multitude of its waves. 43Her cities are become a desolation, a dry land, and a desert, a land in which no man dwells, neither does any son of man pass thereby. 44I will execute judgment on Bel in Babylon, and I will bring out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more to him: yes, the wall of Babylon shall fall. 45My people, go away from the midst of her, and save yourselves every man from the fierce anger of Yahweh. 46Don’t let your heart faint, neither fear for the news that shall be heard in the land; for news shall come one year, and after that in another year shall come news, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler. 47Therefore behold, the days come, that I will execute judgment on the engraved images of Babylon; and her whole land shall be confounded; and all her slain shall fall in the midst of her. 48Then the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein, shall sing for joy over Babylon; for the destroyers shall come to her from the north, says Yahweh. 49As Babylon has caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the land. 50You who have escaped the sword, go, don’t stand still; remember Yahweh from afar, and let Jerusalem come into your mind. 51We are confounded, because we have heard reproach; confusion has covered our faces: for strangers have come into the sanctuaries of Yahweh’s house. 52Therefore behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will execute judgment on her engraved images; and through all her land the wounded shall groan. 53Though Babylon should mount up to the sky, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall destroyers come to her, says Yahweh. 54The sound of a cry from Babylon, and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans! 55For Yahweh lays Babylon waste, and destroys out of her the great voice; and their waves roar like many waters; the noise of their voice is uttered: 56for the destroyer has come on her, even on Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, their bows are broken in pieces; for Yahweh is a God of recompenses, he will surely requite. 57I will make drunk her princes and her wise men, her governors and her deputies, and her mighty men; and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake up, says the King, whose name is Yahweh of Armies. 58Thus says Yahweh of Armies: The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly overthrown, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the peoples shall labor for vanity, and the nations for the fire; and they shall be weary. 59The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah to Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. Now Seraiah was chief quartermaster. 60Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come on Babylon, even all these words that are written concerning Babylon. 61Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you come to Babylon, then see that you read all these words, 62and say, Yahweh, you have spoken concerning this place, to cut it off, that no one shall dwell therein, neither man nor animal, but that it shall be desolate forever. 63It shall be, when you have made an end of reading this book, that you shall bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates: 64and you shall say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise again because of the evil that I will bring on her; and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
1Zo zegt de HEERE: Ziet, Ik zal een verdervenden wind opwekken tegen Babel, en tegen degenen, die daar wonen in het hart van degenen, die tegen Mij opstaan. 2En Ik zal Babel wanners toeschikken, die haar wannen, en haar land uitledigen zullen; want zij zullen ten dage des kwaads van rondom tegen haar zijn. 3De schutter spanne zijn boog tegen dien, die spant, en tegen dien, die zich verheft in zijn pantsier; en verschoont haar jongelingen niet, verbant al haar heir; 4Dat de verslagenen liggen in het land der Chaldeen, en de doorstokenen op haar straten. 5Want Israel of Juda zal niet in weduwschap gelaten worden van zijn God, van den HEERE der heirscharen (hoewel hunlieder land vol van schuld is), van den Heilige Israels. 6Vliedt uit het midden van Babel, en redt, een iegelijk zijn ziel; wordt niet uitgeroeid in haar ongerechtigheid; want dit is de tijd der wraak des HEEREN, Die haar de verdienste betaalt. 7Babel was een gouden beker in de hand des HEEREN, die de ganse aarde dronken maakte; de volken hebben van haar wijn gedronken, daarom zijn de volken dol geworden. 8Schielijk is Babel gevallen en verbroken; huilt over haar, neemt balsem tot haar pijn, misschien zal zij genezen worden. 9Wij hebben Babel gemeesterd, maar zij is niet genezen; verlaat haar dan, en laat ons een iegelijk in zijn land trekken; want haar oordeel reikt tot aan den hemel, en is verheven tot aan de bovenste wolken. 10De HEERE heeft onze gerechtigheden hervoor gebracht; komt en laat ons te Sion het werk des HEEREN, onzes Gods, vertellen! 11Zuivert de pijlen, rust de schilden volkomenlijk toe; de HEERE heeft den geest der koningen van Medie opgewekt; want Zijn voornemen is tegen Babel, dat Hij haar verderve; want dit is de wraak des HEEREN, de wraak Zijns tempels. 12Verheft de banier op de muren van Babel, versterkt de wacht, stelt wachters, bereidt de lagen; want gelijk de HEERE heeft voorgenomen, alzo heeft Hij gedaan, wat Hij over de inwoners van Babel gesproken heeft. 13Gij, die aan vele wateren woont, die machtig zijt van schatten! uw einde is gekomen, de maat uwer gierigheid. 14De HEERE der heirscharen heeft gezworen bij Zijn ziel: Ofschoon Ik u met mensen als met kevers vervuld heb, nochtans zullen zij elkander een vreugdegeschrei over u toeroepen! 15Die de aarde gemaakt heeft door Zijn kracht, Die de wereld bereid heeft door Zijn wijsheid, en den hemel uitgebreid door Zijn verstand; 16Als Hij Zijn stem geeft, zo is er een gedruis van wateren in den hemel, en Hij doet de dampen opklimmen van het einde der aarde; Hij maakt de bliksemen met den regen, en doet den wind voortkomen uit Zijn schatkameren. 17Een ieder mens is onvernuftig geworden, zodat hij geen wetenschap heeft; een ieder goudsmid is beschaamd van het gesneden beeld; want zijn gegoten beeld is leugen, en er is geen geest in hen. 18Ijdelheid zijn zij, een werk van verleidingen; ten tijde hunner bezoeking zullen zij vergaan. 19Jakobs deel is niet gelijk die; want Hij is de Formeerder van alles, en Israel is de roede Zijner erfenis; HEERE der heirscharen is Zijn Naam. 20Gij zijt Mij een voorhamer, en krijgswapenen; en door u zal Ik volken in stukken slaan, en door u zal Ik koninkrijken verderven. 21En door u zal Ik in stukken slaan het paard en zijn ruiter; en door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den wagen en zijn ruiter. 22En door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den man en de vrouw; en door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den oude en den jonge; en door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den jongeling en de jonkvrouw. 23En door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den herder en zijn kudde; en door u zal Ik in stukken slaan den akkerman en zijn juk ossen; en door u zal Ik in stukken slaan landvoogden en overheden. 24Maar Ik zal Babel en allen inwoneren van Chaldea vergelden al hun boosheid, die zij gedaan hebben aan Sion, voor ulieder ogen, spreekt de HEERE. 25Ziet, Ik wil aan u, gij verdervende berg! spreekt de HEERE, gij, die de ganse aarde verderft, en Ik zal Mijn hand tegen u uitstrekken, en u van de steenrotsen afwentelen, en zal u stellen tot een berg des brands. 26En zij zullen uit u geen steen nemen tot een hoek, ook geen steen tot fondamenten; want gij zult tot eeuwige woestheden zijn, spreekt de HEERE. 27Verheft de banier in het land, blaast de bazuin onder de heidenen, heiligt de heidenen tegen haar, roept tegen haar bijeen de koninkrijken van Ararat, Minni en Askenaz; bestelt een krijgsoverste tegen haar, brengt paarden opwaarts, als ruige kevers! 28Heiligt tegen haar de heidenen, de koningen van Medie, haar landvoogden en al haar overheden, ja, het ganse land harer heerschappij. 29Dan zal het land beven en pijn lijden; want elk een van des HEEREN gedachten staat vast tegen Babel, om Babels land te stellen tot een verwoesting, dat er geen inwoner zij. 30Babels helden hebben opgehouden te strijden, zij zijn gebleven in de vestingen, hun macht is bezweken, zij zijn tot wijven geworden; zij hebben hun woningen aangestoken, hun grendels zijn verbroken. 31De loper zal den loper tegemoet lopen, en de kondschapper den kondschapper tegemoet, om den koning van Babel bekend te maken, dat zijn stad van het einde is ingenomen; 32En dat de veren ingenomen, en de rietpoelen met vuur verbrand zijn; en dat de krijgslieden verbaasd zijn. 33Want zo zegt de HEERE der heirscharen, de God Israels: De dochter van Babel is als een dorsvloer, het is tijd, dat men ze trede; nog een weinig, dan zal haar de tijd des oogstes overkomen. 34Nebukadrezar, de koning van Babel, heeft mij opgegeten, hij heeft mij verpletterd, hij heeft mij gesteld als een ledig vat, hij heeft mij verslonden als een draak, hij heeft zijn balg gevuld van mijn lekkernijen; hij heeft mij verdreven. 35Het geweld, dat mij en mijn vlees is aangedaan, zij op Babel! Hoe is Babel geworden tot een ontzetting onder de heidenen! 42Een zee is over Babel gerezen, door de veelheid harer golven is zij bedekt. 43Haar steden zijn geworden tot verwoesting, een dor land en wildernis; een land, waarin niemand woont, en waar geen mensenkind doorgaat. 44En Ik zal bezoeking doen over Bel te Babel, en Ik zal uit zijn muil uithalen, wat hij verslonden heeft; en de heidenen zullen niet meer tot hem toevloeien, want ook Babels muur is gevallen. 45Gaat uit, Mijn volk, uit het midden van haar, en redt een iegelijk zijn ziel, vanwege de hittigheid van den toorn des HEEREN. 46En opdat ulieder hart misschien niet week worde, en gij vreest van het gerucht, dat gehoord zal worden in het land; want er zal een gerucht komen in het ene jaar, en daarna een gerucht in het andere jaar; en er zal geweld zijn in het land, heer over heer. 47Daarom ziet, de dagen komen, dat Ik bezoeking zal doen over de gesneden beelden van Babel; en haar ganse land zal beschaamd worden, en al haar verslagenen zullen in het midden van haar liggen. 48En de hemel en de aarde, mitsgaders al wat daarin is, zullen juichen over Babel; want van het noorden zullen haar de verstoorders aankomen, spreekt de HEERE. 49Gelijk Babel geweest is tot een val der verslagenen van Israel, alzo zullen te Babel de verslagenen des gansen lands vallen. 50Gij ontkomenen van het zwaard, gaat weg, en blijft niet staan; gedenkt des HEEREN van verre, en laat Jeruzalem in ulieder hart opkomen. 51Gij moogt zeggen: Wij zijn beschaamd geworden, want wij hebben versmaadheid gehoord, schaamroodheid heeft ons aangezicht bedekt; omdat uitlandsen over de heiligdommen van des HEEREN huis gekomen zijn; 52Daarom ziet, de dagen komen, spreekt de HEERE, dat Ik bezoeking doen zal over haar gesneden beelden; en de dodelijk verwonde zal kermen in haar ganse land. 53Al klom Babel ten hemel op, en al maakte zij vast de hoogte harer sterkte, zo zullen haar toch verstoorders van Mij overkomen, spreekt de HEERE. 54Er is een stem des gekrijts uit Babel, en een grote breuk uit het land der Chaldeen. 55Want de HEERE verstoort Babel, en zal de grootse stem uit haar doen vergaan; want hunlieder golven zullen bruisen als grote wateren; het geruis van hunlieder geluid zal zich verheffen. 56Want de verstoorder komt over haar, over Babel, en haar helden zullen gevangen worden; hunlieder bogen zijn verbroken; want de HEERE, de God der vergelding, zal hun zekerlijk betalen. 57En Ik zal haar vorsten, en haar wijzen, haar landvoogden, en haar overheden, en haar helden dronken maken; en zij zullen een eeuwigen slaap slapen, en niet opwaken, spreekt de Koning, Wiens Naam is HEERE der heirscharen. 58Zo zegt de HEERE der heirscharen: Die brede muur van Babel zal ten enenmale ontbloot worden, en haar hoge poorten zullen met vuur aangestoken worden; zodat de volken tevergeefs, en de natien ten vure zullen gearbeid hebben, dat zij mat worden. 59Het woord, dat de profeet Jeremia beval aan Seraja, den zoon van Nerija, den zoon van Machseja, als hij van Zedekia, den koning van Juda, naar Babel toog, in het vierde jaar zijner regering; en Seraja was een vreemdzaam vorst. 60Jeremia nu schreef al het kwaad, dat over Babel komen zou, in een boek, te weten al deze woorden, die tegen Babel geschreven zijn. 61En Jeremia zeide tot Seraja: Als gij te Babel komt, zo zult gij zien en lezen al deze woorden; 62En gij zult zeggen: O HEERE, Gij hebt over deze plaats gesproken, dat Gij ze zult uitroeien, zodat er geen inwoner in zij, van den mens tot op het beest, maar dat zij worden zal tot eeuwige woestheden. 63En het zal geschieden, als gij geeindigd zult hebben dit boek te lezen, dan zult gij een steen daaraan binden, en werpen het in het midden van den Frath; 64En zult zeggen: Alzo zal Babel zinken, en niet weder opkomen, vanwege het kwaad, dat Ik over haar zal brengen, en zij zullen mat worden.
