1L’Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit : 2Qui est celui qui obscurcit mes desseins Par des discours sans intelligence ? 3Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme ; Je t’interrogerai, et tu m’instruiras. 4Où étais-tu quand je fondais la terre ? Dis-le, si tu as de l’intelligence. 5Qui en a fixé les dimensions, le sais-tu ? Ou qui a étendu sur elle le cordeau ? 6Sur quoi ses bases sont-elles appuyées ? Ou qui en a posé la pierre angulaire, 7Alors que les étoiles du matin éclataient en chants d’allégresse, Et que tous les fils de Dieu poussaient des cris de joie ? 8Qui a fermé la mer avec des portes, Quand elle s’élança du sein maternel ; 9Quand je fis de la nuée son vêtement, Et de l’obscurité ses langes ; 10Quand je lui imposai ma loi, Et que je lui mis des barrières et des portes ; 11Quand je dis : Tu viendras jusqu’ici, tu n’iras pas au delà ; Ici s’arrêtera l’orgueil de tes flots ? 12Depuis que tu existes, as-tu commandé au matin ? As-tu montré sa place à l’aurore, 13Pour qu’elle saisisse les extrémités de la terre, Et que les méchants en soient secoués ; 14Pour que la terre se transforme comme l’argile qui reçoit une empreinte, Et qu’elle soit parée comme d’un vêtement ; 15Pour que les méchants soient privés de leur lumière, Et que le bras qui se lève soit brisé ? 16As-tu pénétré jusqu’aux sources de la mer ? T’es-tu promené dans les profondeurs de l’abîme ? 17Les portes de la mort t’ont-elles été ouvertes ? As-tu vu les portes de l’ombre de la mort ? 18As-tu embrassé du regard l’étendue de la terre ? Parle, si tu sais toutes ces choses. 19Où est le chemin qui conduit au séjour de la lumière ? Et les ténèbres, où ont-elles leur demeure ? 20Peux-tu les saisir à leur limite, Et connaître les sentiers de leur habitation ? 21Tu le sais, car alors tu étais né, Et le nombre de tes jours est grand ! 22Es-tu parvenu jusqu’aux amas de neige ? As-tu vu les dépôts de grêle, 23Que je tiens en réserve pour les temps de détresse, Pour les jours de guerre et de bataille ? 24Par quel chemin la lumière se divise-t-elle, Et le vent d’orient se répand-il sur la terre ? 25Qui a ouvert un passage à la pluie, Et tracé la route de l’éclair et du tonnerre, 26Pour que la pluie tombe sur une terre sans habitants, Sur un désert où il n’y a point d’hommes ; 27Pour qu’elle abreuve les lieux solitaires et arides, Et qu’elle fasse germer et sortir l’herbe ? 28La pluie a-t-elle un père ? Qui fait naître les gouttes de la rosée ? 29Du sein de qui sort la glace, Et qui enfante le frimas du ciel, 30Pour que les eaux se cachent comme une pierre, Et que la surface de l’abîme soit enchaînée ? 31Noues-tu les liens des Pléiades, Ou détaches-tu les cordages de l’Orion ? 32Fais-tu paraître en leur temps les signes du zodiaque, Et conduis-tu la Grande Ourse avec ses petits ? 33Connais-tu les lois du ciel ? Règles-tu son pouvoir sur la terre ? 34Élèves-tu la voix jusqu’aux nuées, Pour appeler à toi des torrents d’eaux ? 35Lances-tu les éclairs ? Partent-ils ? Te disent-ils : Nous voici ? 36Qui a mis la sagesse dans le cœur, Ou qui a donné l’intelligence à l’esprit ? 37Qui peut avec sagesse compter les nuages, Et verser les outres des cieux, 38Pour que la poussière se mette à ruisseler, Et que les mottes de terre se collent ensemble ?
1Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind, 2“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me! 4“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it? 6Whereupon were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, 7when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? 8“Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke out of the womb, 9when I made clouds its garment, and wrapped it in thick darkness, 10marked out for it my bound, set bars and doors, 11and said, ‘Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed?’ 12“Have you commanded the morning in your days, and caused the dawn to know its place; 13that it might take hold of the ends of the earth, and shake the wicked out of it? 14It is changed as clay under the seal, and presented as a garment. 15From the wicked, their light is withheld. The high arm is broken. 16“Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep? 17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of the shadow of death? 18Have you comprehended the earth in its breadth? Declare, if you know it all. 19“What is the way to the dwelling of light? As for darkness, where is its place, 20that you should take it to its bound, that you should discern the paths to its house? 21Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great! 22Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasures of the hail, 23which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? 24By what way is the lightning distributed, or the east wind scattered on the earth? 25Who has cut a channel for the flood water, or the path for the thunderstorm; 26To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; 27to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to grow? 28Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew? 29Out of whose womb came the ice? The gray frost of the sky, who has given birth to it? 30The waters become hard like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen. 31“Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion? 32Can you lead the constellations out in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her cubs? 33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you establish its dominion over the earth? 34“Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, That abundance of waters may cover you? 35Can you send out lightnings, that they may go? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are?’ 36Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? Or who has given understanding to the mind? 37Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the sky, 38when the dust runs into a mass, and the clods of earth stick together? 39“Can you hunt the prey for the lioness, or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, 40when they crouch in their dens, and lie in wait in the thicket? 41Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food?
1Daarna antwoordde de HEERE Job uit een onweder, en zeide: 2Wie is hij, die den raad verduistert met woorden zonder wetenschap? 3Gord nu, als een man, uw lenden, zo zal Ik u vragen, en onderricht Mij. 4Waar waart gij, toen Ik de aarde grondde? Geef het te kennen, indien gij kloek van verstand zijt. 5Wie heeft haar maten gezet, want gij weet het; of wie heeft over haar een richtsnoer getrokken? 6Waarop zijn haar grondvesten nedergezonken, of wie heeft haar hoeksteen gelegd? 7Toen de morgensterren te zamen vrolijk zongen, en al de kinderen Gods juichten. 8Of wie heeft de zee met deuren toegesloten, toen zij uitbrak, en uit de baarmoeder voortkwam? 9Toen Ik de wolk tot haar kleding stelde, en de donkerheid tot haar windeldoek; 10Toen Ik voor haar met Mijn besluit de aarde doorbrak, en zette grendel en deuren; 11En zeide: Tot hiertoe zult gij komen, en niet verder, en hier zal hij zich stellen tegen den hoogmoed uwer golven. 12Hebt gij van uw dagen den morgenstond geboden? Hebt gij den dageraad zijn plaats aangewezen; 13Opdat hij de einden der aarde vatten zou; en de goddelozen uit haar uitgeschud zouden worden? 14Dat zij veranderd zou worden gelijk zegelleem, en zij gesteld worden als een kleed? 15En dat van de goddelozen hun licht geweerd worde, en de hoge arm worde gebroken? 16Zijt gij gekomen tot aan de oorsprongen der zee, en hebt gij in het onderste des afgronds gewandeld? 17Zijn u de poorten des doods ontdekt, en hebt gij gezien de poorten van de schaduw des doods? 18Zijt gij met uw verstand gekomen tot aan de breedte der aarde? Geef het te kennen, indien gij dit alles weet. 19Waar is de weg, daar het licht woont? En de duisternis, waar is haar plaats? 20Dat gij dat brengen zoudt tot zijn pale, en dat gij merken zoudt de paden zijns huizes? 21Gij weet het, want gij waart toen geboren, en uw dagen zijn veel in getal. 22Zijt gij gekomen tot de schatkameren der sneeuw, en hebt gij de schatkameren des hagels gezien? 23Dien Ik ophoude tot den tijd der benauwdheid, tot den dag des strijds en des oorlogs! 24Waar is de weg, daar het licht verdeeld wordt, en de oostenwind zich verstrooit op de aarde? 25Wie deelt voor den stortregen een waterloop uit, en een weg voor het weerlicht der donderen? 26Om te regenen op het land, waar niemand is, op de woestijn, waarin geen mens is; 27Om het woeste en het verwoeste te verzadigen, en om het uitspruitsel der grasscheutjes te doen wassen. 28Heeft de regen een vader, of wie baart de druppelen des dauws? 29Uit wiens buik komt het ijs voort, en wie baart den rijm des hemels? 30Als met een steen verbergen zich de wateren, en het vlakke des afgrond wordt omvat. 31Kunt gij de liefelijkheden van het Zevengesternte binden, of de strengen des Orions losmaken? 32Kunt gij de Mazzaroth voortbrengen op haar tijd, en den Wagen met zijn kinderen leiden? 33Weet gij de verordeningen des hemels, of kunt gij deszelfs heerschappij op de aarde bestellen? 34Kunt gij uw stem tot de wolken opheffen, opdat een overvloed van water u bedekke? 35Kunt gij de bliksemen uitlaten, dat zij henenvaren, en tot u zeggen: Zie, hier zijn wij? 36Wie heeft de wijsheid in het binnenste gezet? Of wie heeft den zin het verstand gegeven? 37Wie kan de wolken met wijsheid tellen, en wie kan de flessen des hemels nederleggen? 38Als het stof doorgoten is tot vastigheid, en de kluiten samenkleven? 39Zult gij voor den ouden leeuw roof jagen, of de graagheid der jonge leeuwen vervullen? 40Als zij nederbukken in de holen, en in den kuil zitten, ter loering? 41Wie bereidt de raaf haar kost, als haar jongen tot God schreeuwen, als zij dwalen, omdat er geen eten is?
