1Mon cœur est tout tremblant, Il bondit hors de sa place. 2Écoutez, écoutez le frémissement de sa voix, Le grondement qui sort de sa bouche ! 3Il le fait rouler dans toute l’étendue des cieux, Et son éclair brille jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre. 4Puis éclate un rugissement : il tonne de sa voix majestueuse ; Il ne retient plus l’éclair, dès que sa voix retentit. 5Dieu tonne avec sa voix d’une manière merveilleuse ; Il fait de grandes choses que nous ne comprenons pas. 6Il dit à la neige : Tombe sur la terre ! Il le dit à la pluie, même aux plus fortes pluies. 7Il met un sceau sur la main de tous les hommes, Afin que tous se reconnaissent comme ses créatures. 8L’animal sauvage se retire dans une caverne, Et se couche dans sa tanière. 9L’ouragan vient du midi, Et le froid, des vents du nord. 10Par son souffle Dieu produit la glace, Il réduit l’espace où se répandaient les eaux. 11Il charge de vapeurs les nuages, Il les disperse étincelants ; 12Leurs évolutions varient selon ses desseins, Pour l’accomplissement de tout ce qu’il leur ordonne, Sur la face de la terre habitée ; 13C’est comme une verge dont il frappe sa terre, Ou comme un signe de son amour, qu’il les fait apparaître. 14Job, sois attentif à ces choses ! Considère encore les merveilles de Dieu ! 15Sais-tu comment Dieu les dirige, Et fait briller son nuage étincelant ? 16Comprends-tu le balancement des nuées, Les merveilles de celui dont la science est parfaite ? 17Sais-tu pourquoi tes vêtements sont chauds Quand la terre se repose par le vent du midi ? 18Peux-tu comme lui étendre les cieux, Aussi solides qu’un miroir de fonte ? 19Fais-nous connaître ce que nous devons lui dire ; Nous sommes trop ignorants pour nous adresser à lui. 20Lui annoncera-t-on que je parlerai ? Mais quel est l’homme qui désire sa perte ? 21On ne peut fixer le soleil qui resplendit dans les cieux, Lorsqu’un vent passe et en ramène la pureté ; 22Le septentrion le rend éclatant comme l’or. Oh ! que la majesté de Dieu est redoutable ! 23Nous ne saurions parvenir jusqu’au Tout-Puissant, Grand par la force, Par la justice, par le droit souverain : Il ne répond pas ! 24C’est pourquoi les hommes doivent le craindre ; Il ne porte les regards sur aucun sage.
1“Yes, at this my heart trembles, and is moved out of its place. 2Hear, oh, hear the noise of his voice, the sound that goes out of his mouth. 3He sends it out under the whole sky, and his lightning to the ends of the earth. 4After it a voice roars. He thunders with the voice of his majesty. He doesn’t hold back anything when his voice is heard. 5God thunders marvelously with his voice. He does great things, which we can’t comprehend. 6For he says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth;’ likewise to the shower of rain, and to the showers of his mighty rain. 7He seals up the hand of every man, that all men whom he has made may know it. 8Then the animals take cover, and remain in their dens. 9Out of its room comes the storm, and cold out of the north. 10By the breath of God, ice is given, and the breadth of the waters is frozen. 11Yes, he loads the thick cloud with moisture. He spreads abroad the cloud of his lightning. 12It is turned around by his guidance, that they may do whatever he commands them on the surface of the habitable world, 13Whether it is for correction, or for his land, or for loving kindness, that he causes it to come. 14“Listen to this, Job. Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God. 15Do you know how God controls them, and causes the lightning of his cloud to shine? 16Do you know the workings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge? 17You whose clothing is warm, when the earth is still by reason of the south wind? 18Can you, with him, spread out the sky, which is strong as a cast metal mirror? 19Teach us what we shall tell him, for we can’t make our case by reason of darkness. 20Shall it be told him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up? 21Now men don’t see the light which is bright in the skies, but the wind passes, and clears them. 22Out of the north comes golden splendor. With God is awesome majesty. 23We can’t reach the Almighty. He is exalted in power. In justice and great righteousness, he will not oppress. 24Therefore men revere him. He doesn’t regard any who are wise of heart.”
1Ook beeft hierover mijn hart, en springt op uit zijn plaats. 2Hoort met aandacht de beweging Zijner stem, en het geluid, dat uit Zijn mond uitgaat! 3Dat zendt Hij rechtuit onder den gansen hemel, en Zijn licht over de einden der aarde. 4Daarna brult Hij met de stem; Hij dondert met de stem Zijner hoogheid, en vertrekt die dingen niet, als Zijn stem zal gehoord worden. 5God dondert met Zijn stem zeer wonderlijk; Hij doet grote dingen, en wij begrijpen ze niet. 6Want Hij zegt tot de sneeuw: Wees op de aarde; en tot den plasregens des regens; dan is er de plasregen Zijner sterke regenen. 7Dan zegelt Hij de hand van ieder mens toe, opdat Hij kenne al de lieden Zijns werks. 8En het gedierte gaat in de loerplaatsen, en blijft in zijn holen. 9Uit de binnenkamer komt de wervelwind, en van de verstrooiende winden de koude. 10Door zijn geblaas geeft God de vorst, zodat de brede wateren verstijfd worden. 11Ook vermoeit Hij de dikke wolken door klaarheid; Hij verstrooit de wolk Zijns lichts. 12Die keert zich dan naar Zijn wijzen raad door ommegangen, dat zij doen al wat Hij ze gebiedt, op het vlakke der wereld, op de aarde. 13Hetzij dat Hij die tot een roede, of tot Zijn land, of tot weldadigheid beschikt. 14Neem dit, o Job, ter ore; sta, en aanmerk de wonderen Gods. 15Weet gij, wanneer God over dezelve orde stelt, en het licht Zijner wolk laat schijnen? 16Hebt gij wetenschap van de opwegingen der dikke wolken; de wonderheden Desgenen, Die volmaakt is in wetenschappen? 17Hoe uw klederen warm worden, als Hij de aarde stil maakt uit het zuiden? 18Hebt gij met Hem de hemelen uitgespannen, die vast zijn, als een gegoten spiegel? 19Onderricht ons, wat wij Hem zeggen zullen; want wij zullen niets ordentelijk voorstellen kunnen vanwege de duisternis. 20Zal het Hem verteld worden, als ik zo zou spreken? Denkt iemand dat, gewisselijk, hij zal verslonden worden. 21En nu ziet men het licht niet als het helder is in den hemel, als de wind doorgaat, en dien zuivert; 22Als van het noorden het goud komt; maar bij God is een vreselijke majesteit! 23Den Almachtige, Dien kunnen wij niet uitvinden; Hij is groot van kracht; doch door gericht en grote gerechtigheid verdrukt Hij niet. 24Daarom vreze Hem de lieden; Hij ziet geen wijzen van harte aan.
