1Il y avait dans le pays d’Uts un homme qui s’appelait Job. Et cet homme était intègre et droit ; il craignait Dieu, et se détournait du mal. 2Il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles. 3Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de bœufs, cinq cents ânesses, et un très grand nombre de serviteurs. Et cet homme était le plus considérable de tous les fils de l’Orient. 4Ses fils allaient les uns chez les autres et donnaient tour à tour un festin, et ils invitaient leurs trois sœurs à manger et à boire avec eux. 5Et quand les jours de festin étaient passés, Job appelait et sanctifiait ses fils, puis il se levait de bon matin et offrait pour chacun d’eux un holocauste ; car Job disait : Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché et ont-ils offensé Dieu dans leur cœur. C’est ainsi que Job avait coutume d’agir. 6Or, les fils de Dieu vinrent un jour se présenter devant l’Éternel, et Satan vint aussi au milieu d’eux. 7L’Éternel dit à Satan : D’où viens-tu ? Et Satan répondit à l’Éternel : De parcourir la terre et de m’y promener. 8L’Éternel dit à Satan : As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job ? Il n’y a personne comme lui sur la terre ; c’est un homme intègre et droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal. 9Et Satan répondit à l’Éternel : Est-ce d’une manière désintéressée que Job craint Dieu ? 10Ne l’as-tu pas protégé, lui, sa maison, et tout ce qui est à lui ? Tu as béni l’œuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux couvrent le pays. 11Mais étends ta main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient, et je suis sûr qu’il te maudit en face. 12L’Éternel dit à Satan : Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient, je te le livre ; seulement, ne porte pas la main sur lui. Et Satan se retira de devant la face de l’Éternel. 13Un jour que les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné, 14il arriva auprès de Job un messager qui dit : Les bœufs labouraient et les ânesses paissaient à côté d’eux ; 15des Sabéens se sont jetés dessus, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l’épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul , pour t’en apporter la nouvelle. 16Il parlait encore, lorsqu’un autre vint et dit : Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, a embrasé les brebis et les serviteurs, et les a consumés. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t’en apporter la nouvelle. 17Il parlait encore, lorsqu’un autre vint et dit : Des Chaldéens, formés en trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux, les ont enlevés, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l’épée. Et je me suis échappé moi seul, pour t’en apporter la nouvelle. 20Alors Job se leva, déchira son manteau, et se rasa la tête ; puis, se jetant par terre, il se prosterna, 21et dit : Je suis sorti nu du sein de ma mère, et nu je retournerai dans le sein de la terre. L’Éternel a donné, et l’Éternel a ôté ; que le nom de l’Éternel soit béni ! 22En tout cela, Job ne pécha point et n’attribua rien d’injuste à Dieu.
1There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil. 2There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. 4His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. 5It was so, when the days of their feasting had run their course, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts.” Job did so continually. 6Now on the day when God’s sons came to present themselves before Yahweh, Satan also came among them. 7Yahweh said to Satan, “Where have you come from?” Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.” 8Yahweh said to Satan, “Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil.” 9Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? 10Haven’t you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land. 11But stretch out your hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will renounce you to your face.” 12Yahweh said to Satan, “Behold, all that he has is in your power. Only on himself don’t stretch out your hand.” So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh. 13It fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house, 14that there came a messenger to Job, and said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, 15and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 16While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, “The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 17While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you.” 18While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, “Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house, 19and behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you.” 20Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. 21He said, “Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh’s name.” 22In all this, Job did not sin, nor charge God with wrongdoing.

Alzo deed Job al die dagen. 6Er was nu een dag, als de kinderen Gods kwamen, om zich voor den HEERE te stellen, dat de satan ook in het midden van hen kwam. 7Toen zeide de HEERE tot den satan; Van waar komt gij? En de satan antwoordde den HEERE, en zeide: Van om te trekken op de aarde, en van die te doorwandelen. 8En de HEERE zeide tot den satan: Hebt gij ook acht geslagen op Mijn knecht Job? Want niemand is op de aarde gelijk hij, een man oprecht en vroom, godvrezende en wijkende van het kwaad. 9Toen antwoordde de satan den HEERE, en zeide: Is het om niet, dat Job God vreest? 10Hebt Gij niet een betuining gemaakt voor hem, en voor zijn huis, en voor al wat hij heeft rondom? Het werk zijner handen hebt Gij gezegend, en zijn vee is in menigte uitgebroken in den lande. 11Maar toch strek nu Uw hand uit, en tast aan alles, wat hij heeft; zo hij U niet in Uw aangezicht zal zegenen? 12En de HEERE zeide tot den satan: Zie, al wat hij heeft, zij in uw hand; alleen aan hem strek uw hand niet uit. En de satan ging uit van het aangezicht des HEEREN. 13Er was nu een dag, als zijn zonen en zijn dochteren aten, en wijn dronken in het huis van hun broeder, den eerstgeborene. 14Dat een bode tot Job kwam, en zeide: De runderen waren ploegende, en de ezelinnen weidende aan hun zijden. 15Doch de Sabeers deden een inval, en namen ze, en sloegen de jongeren met de scherpte des zwaards; en ik ben maar alleen ontkomen, om het u aan te zeggen. 16Als deze nog sprak, zo kwam een ander, en zeide: Het vuur Gods viel uit den hemel, en ontstak onder de schapen en onder de jongeren, en verteerde ze; en ik ben maar alleen ontkomen, om het u aan te zeggen. 17Als deze nog sprak, zo kwam een ander, en zeide: De Chaldeen stelden drie hopen, en vielen op de kemelen aan, en namen ze, en sloegen de jongeren met de scherpte des zwaards; en ik ben maar alleen ontkomen, om het u aan te zeggen. 18Als deze nog sprak, zo kwam een ander, en zeide: Uw zonen en uw dochteren aten, en dronken wijn, in het huis van hun broeder, den eerstgeborene; 19En zie, een grote wind kwam van over de woestijn, en stiet aan de vier hoeken van het huis, en het viel op de jongelingen, dat ze stierven; en ik ben maar alleen ontkomen, om het u aan te zeggen. 20Toen stond Job op, en scheurde zijn mantel, en schoor zijn hoofd, en viel op de aarde, en boog zich neder; 21En hij zeide: Naakt ben ik uit mijner moeders buik gekomen, en naakt zal ik daarhenen wederkeren. De HEERE heeft gegeven, en de HEERE heeft genomen; de Naam des HEEREN zij geloofd! 22In dit alles zondigde Job niet, en schreef Gode niets ongerijmds toe.
