1Mon souffle se perd, Mes jours s’éteignent, Le sépulcre m’attend. 2Je suis environné de moqueurs, Et mon œil doit contempler leurs insultes. 3Sois auprès de toi-même ma caution ; Autrement, qui répondrait pour moi ? 4Car tu as fermé leur cœur à l’intelligence ; Aussi ne les laisseras-tu pas triompher. 5On invite ses amis au partage du butin, Et l’on a des enfants dont les yeux se consument. 6Il m’a rendu la fable des peuples, Et ma personne est un objet de mépris. 7Mon œil est obscurci par la douleur ; Tous mes membres sont comme une ombre. 8Les hommes droits en sont stupéfaits, Et l’innocent se soulève contre l’impie. 9Le juste néanmoins demeure ferme dans sa voie, Celui qui a les mains pures se fortifie de plus en plus. 10Mais vous tous, revenez à vos mêmes discours, Et je ne trouverai pas un sage parmi vous. 11Quoi ! mes jours sont passés, mes projets sont anéantis, Les projets qui remplissaient mon cœur… 12Et ils prétendent que la nuit c’est le jour, Que la lumière est proche quand les ténèbres sont là ! 13C’est le séjour des morts que j’attends pour demeure, C’est dans les ténèbres que je dresserai ma couche ; 14Je crie à la fosse : Tu es mon père ! Et aux vers : Vous êtes ma mère et ma sœur ! 15Mon espérance, où donc est-elle ? Mon espérance, qui peut la voir ? 16Elle descendra vers les portes du séjour des morts, Quand nous irons ensemble reposer dans la poussière.
1“My spirit is consumed. My days are extinct, And the grave is ready for me. 2Surely there are mockers with me. My eye dwells on their provocation. 3“Now give a pledge, be collateral for me with yourself. Who is there who will strike hands with me? 4For you have hidden their heart from understanding, Therefore you shall not exalt them. 5He who denounces his friends for plunder, Even the eyes of his children shall fail. 6“But he has made me a byword of the people. They spit in my face. 7My eye also is dim by reason of sorrow. All my members are as a shadow. 8Upright men shall be astonished at this. The innocent shall stir up himself against the godless. 9Yet shall the righteous hold on his way. He who has clean hands shall grow stronger and stronger. 10But as for you all, come on now again; I shall not find a wise man among you. 11My days are past, my plans are broken off, as are the thoughts of my heart. 12They change the night into day, saying ‘The light is near’ in the presence of darkness. 13If I look for Sheol as my house, if I have spread my couch in the darkness, 14If I have said to corruption, ‘You are my father;’ to the worm, ‘My mother,’ and ‘my sister;’ 15where then is my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? 16Shall it go down with me to the gates of Sheol, or descend together into the dust?”
1Mijn geest is verdorven, mijn dagen worden uitgeblust, de graven zijn voor mij. 2Zijn niet bespotters bij mij, en overnacht niet mijn oog in hunlieder verbittering? 3Zet toch bij, stel mij een borg bij U; wie zal hij zijn? Dat in mijn hand geklapt worde. 4Want hun hart hebt Gij van kloek verstand verborgen; daarom zult Gij hen niet verhogen. 5Die met vleiing den vrienden wat aanzegt, ook zijner kinderen ogen zullen versmachten. 6Doch Hij heeft mij tot een spreekwoord der volken gesteld; zodat ik een trommelslag ben voor ieders aangezicht. 7Daarom is mijn oog door verdriet verdonkerd, en al mijn ledematen zijn gelijk een schaduw. 8De oprechten zullen hierover verbaasd zijn, en de onschuldige zal zich tegen den huichelaar opmaken; 9En de rechtvaardige zal zijn weg vasthouden, en die rein van handen is, zal in sterkte toenemen. 10Maar toch gij allen, keert weder, en komt nu; want ik vind onder u geen wijze. 11Mijn dagen zijn voorbijgegaan; uitgerukt zijn mijn gedachten, de bezittingen mijns harten. 12Den nacht verstellen zij in den dag; het licht is nabij den ondergang vanwege de duisternis. 13Zo ik wacht, het graf zal mijn huis wezen; in de duisternis zal ik mijn bed spreiden. 14Tot de groeve roep ik: Gij zijt mijn vader! Tot het gewormte: Mijn moeder, en mijn zuster! 15Waar zou dan nu mijn verwachting wezen? Ja, mijn verwachting, wie zal ze aanschouwen? 16Zij zullen ondervaren met de handbomen des grafs, als er rust te zamen in het stof wezen zal.
