1L’homme né de la femme ! Sa vie est courte, sans cesse agitée. 2Il naît, il est coupé comme une fleur ; Il fuit et disparaît comme une ombre. 3Et c’est sur lui que tu as l’œil ouvert ! Et tu me fais aller en justice avec toi ! 4Comment d’un être souillé sortira-t-il un homme pur ? Il n’en peut sortir aucun. 5Si ses jours sont fixés, si tu as compté ses mois, Si tu en as marqué le terme qu’il ne saurait franchir, 6Détourne de lui les regards, et donne-lui du relâche, Pour qu’il ait au moins la joie du mercenaire à la fin de sa journée. 7Un arbre a de l’espérance : Quand on le coupe, il repousse, Il produit encore des rejetons ; 8Quand sa racine a vieilli dans la terre, Quand son tronc meurt dans la poussière, 9Il reverdit à l’approche de l’eau, Il pousse des branches comme une jeune plante. 10Mais l’homme meurt, et il perd sa force ; L’homme expire, et où est-il ? 11Les eaux des lacs s’évanouissent, Les fleuves tarissent et se dessèchent ; 12Ainsi l’homme se couche et ne se relèvera plus, Il ne se réveillera pas tant que les cieux subsisteront, Il ne sortira pas de son sommeil. 13Oh ! si tu voulais me cacher dans le séjour des morts, M’y tenir à couvert jusqu’à ce que ta colère fût passée, Et me fixer un terme auquel tu te souviendras de moi ! 14Si l’homme une fois mort pouvait revivre, J’aurais de l’espoir tout le temps de mes souffrances, Jusqu’à ce que mon état vînt à changer. 15Tu appellerais alors, et je te répondrais, Tu languirais après l’ouvrage de tes mains. 16Mais aujourd’hui tu comptes mes pas, Tu as l’œil sur mes péchés ; 17Mes transgressions sont scellées en un faisceau, Et tu imagines des iniquités à ma charge. 18La montagne s’écroule et périt, Le rocher disparaît de sa place, 19La pierre est broyée par les eaux, Et la terre emportée par leur courant ; Ainsi tu détruis l’espérance de l’homme. 20Tu es sans cesse à l’assaillir, et il s’en va ; Tu le défigures, puis tu le renvoies. 21Que ses fils soient honorés, il n’en sait rien ; Qu’ils soient dans l’abaissement, il l’ignore. 22C’est pour lui seul qu’il éprouve de la douleur en son corps, C’est pour lui seul qu’il ressent de la tristesse en son âme.
1“Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble. 2He grows up like a flower, and is cut down. He also flees like a shadow, and doesn’t continue. 3Do you open your eyes on such a one, and bring me into judgment with you? 4Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? Not one. 5Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can’t pass; 6Look away from him, that he may rest, until he shall accomplish, as a hireling, his day. 7“For there is hope for a tree, If it is cut down, that it will sprout again, that the tender branch of it will not cease. 8Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stock dies in the ground, 9yet through the scent of water it will bud, and sprout boughs like a plant. 10But man dies, and is laid low. Yes, man gives up the spirit, and where is he? 11As the waters fail from the sea, and the river wastes and dries up, 12so man lies down and doesn’t rise. Until the heavens are no more, they shall not awake, nor be roused out of their sleep. 13“Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would keep me secret, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! 14If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my warfare would I wait, until my release should come. 15You would call, and I would answer you. You would have a desire to the work of your hands. 16But now you number my steps. Don’t you watch over my sin? 17My disobedience is sealed up in a bag. You fasten up my iniquity. 18“But the mountain falling comes to nothing. The rock is removed out of its place; 19The waters wear the stones. The torrents of it wash away the dust of the earth. So you destroy the hope of man. 20You forever prevail against him, and he departs. You change his face, and send him away. 21His sons come to honor, and he doesn’t know it. They are brought low, but he doesn’t perceive it of them. 22But his flesh on him has pain, and his soul within him mourns.”
1De mens, van een vrouw geboren, is kort van dagen, en zat van onrust. 2Hij komt voort als een bloem, en wordt afgesneden; ook vlucht hij als een schaduw, en bestaat niet. 3Nog doet Gij Uw ogen over zulk een open; en Gij betrekt mij in het gericht met U. 4Wie zal een reine geven uit den onreine? Niet een. 5Dewijl zijn dagen bestemd zijn, het getal zijner maanden bij U is, en Gij zijn bepalingen gemaakt hebt, die hij niet overgaan zal; 6Wend U van hem af, dat hij rust hebbe, totdat hij als een dagloner aan zijn dag een welgevallen hebbe. 7Want voor een boom, als hij afgehouwen wordt, is er verwachting, dat hij zich nog zal veranderen, en zijn scheut niet zal ophouden. 8Indien zijn wortel in de aarde veroudert, en zijn stam in het stof versterft; 9Hij zal van den reuk der wateren weder uitspruiten, en zal een tak maken, gelijk een plant. 10Maar een man sterft, als hij verzwakt is, en de mens geeft den geest, waar is hij dan? 11De wateren verlopen uit een meer, en een rivier droogt uit en verdort; 12Alzo ligt de mens neder, en staat niet op; totdat de hemelen niet meer zijn, zullen zij niet opwaken, noch uit hun slaap opgewekt worden. 13Och, of Gij mij in het graf verstaakt, mij verborgt, totdat Uw toorn zich afkeerde; dat Gij mij een bepaling steldet, en mijner gedachtig waart! 14Als een man gestorven is, zal hij weder leven? Ik zou al de dagen mijns strijds hopen, totdat mijn verandering komen zou. 15Dat Gij zoudt roepen, en ik U zou antwoorden, dat Gij tot het werk Uwer handen zoudt begerig zijn. 16Maar nu telt Gij mijn treden; Gij bewaart mij niet om mijner zonden wil. 17Mijn overtreding is in een bundeltje verzegeld, en Gij pakt mijn ongerechtigheid opeen. 18En voorwaar, een berg vallende vergaat, en een rots wordt versteld uit haar plaats; 19De wateren vermalen de stenen, het stof der aarde overstelpt het gewas, dat van zelf daaruit voortkomt; alzo verderft Gij de verwachting des mensen. 20Gij overweldigt hem in eeuwigheid, en hij gaat heen; veranderende zijn gelaat, zo zendt Gij hem weg. 21Zijn kinderen komen tot eer, en hij weet het niet; of zij worden klein, en hij let niet op hen. 22Maar zijn vlees, nog aan hem zijnde, heeft smart; en zijn ziel, in hem zijnde, heeft rouw.
