1Năm thứ tư của Giê-hô-gia-kim, con trai Giô-si-a, vua Giu-đa, lời Ðức Giê-hô-va được phán cho Giê-rê-mi rằng: 2Hãy lấy một cuốn sách, chép vào đó mọi lời ta đã phán cùng ngươi nghịch cùng Y-sơ-ra-ên, Giu-đa, và các dân ngoại, từ ngày ta khởi phán cùng ngươi, từ đời Giô-si-a, cho đến ngày nay. 3Khi người Giu-đa sẽ biết mọi tai vạ ta định giáng cho chúng nó, có lẽ ai nấy đều trở lại khỏi đường xấu mình, hầu cho ta có thể tha sự gian ác và tội lỗi chúng nó. 4Giê-rê-mi gọi Ba-rúc, con trai Nê-ri-gia, đến, Ba-rúc nhờ niệng Giê-rê-mi đọc cho, thì chép hết mọi lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cho người vào cuốn sách. 5Ðoạn, Giê-rê-mi dạy Ba-rúc rằng: Ta bị giam cấm, không thể vào nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va; 6nên đến ngày kiêng ăn, chính ngươi hãy đi vào nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va, khá đọc cho dân sự nghe lời Ðức Giê-hô-va trong sách mà ngươi đã cứ miệng ta chép ra. Ngươi cũng khá đọc cho cả dân Giu-đa đến từ các thành mình đều nghe nữa. 7Có lẽ họ sẽ cầu xin Ðức Giê-hô-va và xây lại khỏi đường ác mình; vì cơn giận và thạnh nộ mà Ðức Giê-hô-va đã rao nghịch cùng dân nầy là lớn lắm. 8Ba-rúc, con trai Nê-ri-gia, theo mọi sự tiên tri Giê-rê-mi đã dạy đọc lời Ðức Giê-hô-va trong sách, tại nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va. 9Xảy ra tháng chín, năm thứ năm về đời Giê-hô-gia-kim, con trai Giô-si-a, vua Giu-đa, hết thảy dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem và cả dân sự từ các thành Giu-đa đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, rao sự kiêng ăn trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va. 10Ba-rúc bèn đọc cho cả dân sự nghe mọi lời của Giê-rê-mi trong sách, tại nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va, trong phòng Ghê-ma-ria, con trai Sa-phan làm thơ ký, nơi hành lang trên, lối vào cửa mới nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va. 11Khi Mi-chê, con trai Ghê-ma-ria, cháu Sa-phan, đã nghe đọc mọi lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va trong sách, 12bèn xuống cung vua, trong phòng thơ ký; và, nầy, hết thảy các quan trưởng đều ngồi đó: tức Ê-li-sa-ma thơ ký, Ðê-la-gia con trai Sê-ma-gia, Eân-na-than con trai Aïc-bồ, Ghê-ma-ria con trai Sa-phan, Sê-đê-kia con trai Ha-na-nia, và hết thảy các quan trưởng. 13Mi-chê thuật cho họ mòi lời mình đã nghe, khi Ba-rúc đọc sách vào tai dân sự. 14Cho nên các quan trưởng bèn sai Giê-hu-đi, con trai Nê-tha-nia cháu Sê-lê-mia, chắt Cu-si, đến cùng Ba-rúc, mà rằng: Hãy cầm trong tay cuốn sách mà ngươi đã đọc cho dân sự nghe, và đến đây. 1In the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, 2Take a scroll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. 3It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do to them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin. 4Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all Yahweh’s words, which he had spoken to him, on a scroll of a book. 5Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I can’t go into Yahweh’s house: 6therefore you go, and read in the scroll, which you have written from my mouth, Yahweh’s words in the ears of the people in Yahweh’s house on the fast day; and also you shall read them in the ears of all Judah who come out of their cities. 7It may be they will present their supplication before Yahweh, and will return everyone from his evil way; for great is the anger and the wrath that Yahweh has pronounced against this people. 8Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book Yahweh’s words in Yahweh’s house. 9Now in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people who came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before Yahweh. 10Then Baruch read the words of Jeremiah from the book in Yahweh’s house, in the room of Gemariah the son of Shaphan, the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of Yahweh’s house, in the ears of all the people. 11When Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all Yahweh’s words, 12he went down into the king’s house, into the scribe’s room: and behold, all the princes were sitting there, Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes. 13Then Micaiah declared to them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people. 14Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, Take in your hand the scroll in which you have read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the scroll in his hand, and came to them. 15They said to him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears. 16Now when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said to Baruch, “We will surely tell the king of all these words.” 17They asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How did you write all these words at his mouth? 18Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words to me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book. 19Then the princes said to Baruch, Go, hide, you and Jeremiah; and let no man know where you are. 20They went in to the king into the court; but they had laid up the scroll in the room of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king. 21So the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll; and he took it out of the room of Elishama the scribe. Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes who stood beside the king. 22Now the king was sitting in the winter house in the ninth month: and there was a fire in the brazier burning before him. 23When Jehudi had read three or four leaves, the king cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. 24They were not afraid, nor tore their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants who heard all these words. 25Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the scroll; but he would not hear them. 26The king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet; but Yahweh hid them. 27Then Yahweh’s word came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the scroll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, 28Take again another scroll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first scroll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah has burned. 29Concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, Thus says Yahweh: You have burned this scroll, saying, Why have you written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from there man and animal? 30Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah: He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. 31I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring on them, and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and on the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they didn’t listen. 32Then took Jeremiah another scroll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah, who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many similar words were added to them.

Alzo nam Baruch, de zoon van Nerija, de rol in zijn hand, en kwam tot hen. 15En zij zeiden tot hem: Zit toch neder, en lees ze voor onze oren; en Baruch las voor hun oren. 16En het geschiedde, als zij al de woorden hoorden, dat zij verschrikten, de een tegen den ander; en zij zeiden tot Baruch: Voorzeker zullen wij al deze woorden den koning bekend maken. 17En zij vraagden Baruch, zeggende: Verklaar ons toch, hoe hebt gij al deze woorden uit zijn mond geschreven? 18En Baruch zeide tot hen: Uit zijn mond las hij tot mij al deze woorden, en ik schreef ze met inkt in dit boek. 19Toen zeiden de vorsten tot Baruch: Ga henen, verberg u, gij en Jeremia; en niemand wete, waar gijlieden zijt. 20Zij dan gingen in tot den koning in het voorhof; maar de rol legden zij weg in de kamer van Elisama, den schrijver; en zij verklaarden al die woorden voor de oren des konings. 21Toen zond de koning Jehudi, om de rol te halen; en hij haalde ze uit de kamer van Elisama, den schrijver; en Jehudi las ze voor de oren des konings, en voor de oren van al de vorsten, die omtrent den koning stonden. 22(De koning nu zat in het winterhuis in de negende maand; en er was een vuur voor zijn aangezicht op den haard aangestoken.) 23En het geschiedde, als Jehudi drie stukken, of vier gelezen had, versneed hij ze met een schrijfmes, en wierp ze in het vuur, dat op den haard was, totdat de ganse rol verteerd was in het vuur, dat op den haard was. 24En zij verschrikten niet, en scheurden hun klederen niet, de koning noch al zijn knechten, die al deze woorden gehoord hadden. 25Hoewel ook Elnathan, en Delaja, en Gemarja bij den koning daarvoor spraken, dat hij de rol niet zou verbranden; doch hij hoorde naar hen niet. 26Daartoe gebood de koning aan Jerahmeel, den zoon van Hammelech, en Zeraja, den zoon van Azriel, en Selemja, den zoon van Abdeel, om den schrijver Baruch en den profeet Jeremia te vangen. Maar de HEERE had hen verborgen. 27Toen geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot Jeremia, nadat de koning de rol en de woorden, die Baruch geschreven had uit den mond van Jeremia, verbrand had, zeggende: 28Neem u weder een andere rol, en schrijf daarop al de eerste woorden, die geweest zijn op de eerste rol, die Jojakim, de koning van Juda, verbrand heeft. 29En tot Jojakim, den koning van Juda, zult gij zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE: Gij hebt deze rol verbrand, zeggende: Waarom hebt gij daarop geschreven, zeggende: De koning van Babel zal zekerlijk komen, en dit land verderven, en maken, dat mens en beest daarin ophouden? 30Daarom zegt de HEERE alzo van Jojakim, den koning van Juda: Hij zal geen hebben, die op Davids troon zitte; en zijn dood lichaam zal weggeworpen zijn, des daags in de hitte, en des nachts in de vorst. 31En Ik zal over hem, en over zijn zaad, en over zijn knechten hunlieder ongerechtigheid bezoeken; en Ik zal over hen, en over de inwoners van Jeruzalem, en over de mannen van Juda, al het kwaad brengen, dat Ik tot hen gesproken heb; maar zij hebben niet gehoord. 32Jeremia dan nam een andere rol, en gaf ze aan den schrijver Baruch, den zoon van Nerija; die schreef daarop, uit den mond van Jeremia, al de woorden des boeks, dat Jojakim, de koning van Juda, met vuur verbrand had; en tot dezelve werden nog veel dergelijke woorden toegedaan.
