1Oh fosse pur la mia testa mutata in acqua, e fosser gli occhi miei una fonte di lacrime! Io piangerei giorno e notte gli uccisi della figliuola del mio popolo! 2Oh se avessi nel deserto un rifugio da viandanti! Io abbandonerei il mio popolo e me n’andrei lungi da costoro, perché son tutti adulteri, un’adunata di traditori. 3Tendono la lingua, ch’è il loro arco, per scoccar menzogne; son diventati potenti nel paese, ma non per agir con fedeltà; poiché procedono di malvagità in malvagità, e non conoscono me, dice l’Eterno. 4Si guardi ciascuno dal suo amico, e nessuno si fidi del suo fratello; poiché ogni fratello non fa che ingannare, ed ogni amico va spargendo calunnie. 5L’uno gabba l’altro, e non dice la verità, esercitano la loro lingua a mentire, s’affannano a fare il male. 6La tua dimora è la malafede; ed è per malafede che costoro rifiutano di conoscermi, dice l’Eterno. 7Perciò, così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: Ecco, io li fonderò nel crogiuolo per saggiarli; poiché che altro farei riguardo alla figliuola del mio popolo? 8La loro lingua è un dardo micidiale; essa non dice che menzogne; con la bocca ognuno parla di pace al suo prossimo, ma nel cuore gli tende insidie. 9Non li punirei io per queste cose? dice l’Eterno; e l’anima mia non si vendicherebbe d’una simile nazione? 10Io vo’ dare in pianto ed in gemito, per i monti, e vo’ dare in lamento per i pascoli del deserto, perché son arsi, talché niuno più vi passa, e non vi s’ode più voce di bestiame; gli uccelli del cielo e le bestie sono fuggite, sono scomparse. 11Io ridurrò Gerusalemme in un monte di ruine, in un ricetto di sciacalli; e farò delle città di Giuda una desolazione senza abitanti. 12Chi è il savio che capisca queste cose? Chi è colui al quale la bocca dell’Eterno ha parlato perché ei ne dia l’annunzio? Perché il paese è egli distrutto, desolato come un deserto talché niuno vi passa? 13L’Eterno risponde: Perché costoro hanno abbandonato la mia legge ch’io avevo loro posta dinanzi e non hanno dato ascolto alla mia voce, e non l’hanno seguìta nella lor condotta, 14ma han seguito la caparbietà dei cuor loro, e sono andati dietro ai Baali, come i loro padri insegnarono loro. 15Perciò, così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Ecco, io farò mangiar dell’assenzio a questo popolo e gli farò bere dell’acqua avvelenata. 16Io li disperderò fra le nazioni, che né loro né i loro padri han conosciuto; e manderò dietro a loro la spada, finché io li abbia consumati. 17Così parla l’Eterno degli eserciti: Pensate a chiamare delle piagnone, e ch’esse vengano! Mandate a cercare le più avvedute e ch’esse vengano 18e s’affrettino a fare un lamento su noi, sì che i nostri occhi si struggano in lacrime, e l’acqua fluisca dalle nostre palpebre. 19Poiché una voce di lamento si fa udire da Sion: "Come siamo devastati! Siamo coperti di confusione perché dobbiamo abbandonare il paese, ora che hanno abbattuto le nostre dimore". 20Donne, ascoltate la parola dell’Eterno, e i vostri orecchi ricevan la parola della sua bocca! Insegnate alle vostre figliuole del lamenti, e ognuna insegni alla sua compagna de’ canti funebri! 21Poiché la morte è salita per le nostre finestre, è entrata nei nostri palazzi per far sparire i bambini dalle strade e i giovani dalle piazze. 22Di’: Così parla l’Eterno: I cadaveri degli uomini giaceranno come letame sull’aperta campagna, come una mannella che il mietitore si lascia dietro e che nessuno raccoglie. 23Così parla l’Eterno: Il savio non si glori della sua saviezza, il forte non si glori della sua forza, il ricco non si glori della sua ricchezza; 24ma chi si gloria si glori di questo: che ha intelligenza e conosce me, che sono l’Eterno, che esercita la benignità, il diritto e la giustizia sulla terra; perché di queste cose mi compiaccio, dice l’Eterno. 25Ecco, i giorni vengono, dice l’Eterno, ch’io punirò tutti i circoncisi che sono incirconcisi: 26l’Egitto, Giuda, Edom, i figliuoli di Ammon, Moab, e tutti quelli che si tagliano i canti della barba, e abitano nel deserto; poiché tutte le nazioni sono incirconcise, e tutta la casa d’Israele e incirconcisa di cuore.
1Oh that my head were waters, and my eyes a spring of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people! 2Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they are all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. 3They bend their tongue, as their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they don’t know me, says Yahweh. 4Take heed everyone of his neighbor, and don’t trust in any brother; for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will go about with slanders. 5They will deceive everyone his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity. 6Your habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, says Yahweh. 7Therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies, Behold, I will melt them, and try them; for how should I deal with the daughter of my people? 8Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lays wait for him. 9Shall I not visit them for these things? says Yahweh; shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? 10For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that no one passes through; neither can men hear the voice of the livestock; both the birds of the sky and the animals are fled, they are gone. 11I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling place of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant. 12Who is the wise man, that may understand this? Who is he to whom the mouth of Yahweh has spoken, that he may declare it? Why is the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that no one passes through? 13Yahweh says, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein, 14but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them; 15therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. 16I will scatter them also among the nations, whom neither they nor their fathers have known; and I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them. 17Thus says Yahweh of Armies, Consider, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for the skillful women, that they may come: 18and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. 19For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we ruined! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because they have cast down our dwellings. 20Yet hear Yahweh’s word, you women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth; and teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation. 21For death has come up into our windows, it is entered into our palaces; to cut off the children from outside, and the young men from the streets. 22Speak, Thus says Yahweh, The dead bodies of men shall fall as dung on the open field, and as the handful after the harvester; and no one shall gather them. 23Thus says Yahweh, Don’t let the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, don’t let the rich man glory in his riches; 24but let him who glories glory in this, that he has understanding, and knows me, that I am Yahweh who exercises loving kindness, justice, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, says Yahweh. 25Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will punish all those who are circumcised in uncircumcision: 26Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab, and all that have the corners of their hair cut off, who dwell in the wilderness; for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.
1Och, dat mijn hoofd water ware, en mijn oog een springader van tranen! zo zou ik dag en nacht bewenen de verslagenen van de dochter mijns volks. 2Och, dat ik in de woestijn een herberg der wandelaars had, zo zou ik mijn volk verlaten, en van hen trekken; want zij zijn allen overspelers, een trouweloze hoop. 3En zij spannen hun tong als hun boog tot leugen; zij worden geweldig in het land, doch niet tot waarheid; want zij gaan voort van boosheid tot boosheid, maar Mij kennen zij niet, spreekt de HEERE. 4Wacht u, een iegelijk van zijn vriend, en vertrouwt niet op enigen broeder; want elk broeder doet niet dan bedriegen, en elk vriend wandelt in achterklap. 5En zij handelen bedriegelijk, een ieder met zijn vriend, en spreken de waarheid niet; zij leren hun tong leugen spreken, zij maken zich moede met verkeerdelijk te handelen. 6Uw woning is in het midden van bedrog; door bedrog weigeren zij Mij te kennen, spreekt de HEERE. 7Daarom zegt de HEERE der heirscharen alzo: Ziet, Ik zal hen smelten en zal hen beproeven; want hoe zou Ik anders doen ten aanzien der dochter Mijns volks? 8Hun tong is een moordpijl, zij spreekt bedrog; een ieder spreekt met zijn naaste van vrede met zijn mond, maar in zijn binnenste legt hij lagen. 9Zou Ik hen om deze dingen niet bezoeken? spreekt de HEERE; zou Mijn ziel zich niet wreken aan zulk een volk, als dit is? 10Ik zal een geween en een weeklage opheffen over de bergen, en een klaaglied over de herdershutten der woestijn; want zij zijn afgebrand, dat er niemand doorgaat, en men hoort er geen stem van vee; van de vogelen des hemels aan tot de beesten toe zijn zij weggezworven, doorgegaan! 11En Ik zal Jeruzalem stellen tot steen hopen, tot een woning der draken; en de steden van Juda zal Ik stellen tot een verwoesting, zonder inwoner. 12Wie is de wijze man, die dit versta? En tot wien heeft de mond des HEEREN gesproken, dat hij het verkondige, waarom het land vergaan en afgebrand zij als een woestijn, dat er niemand doorgaat? 13En de HEERE zeide: Omdat zij Mijn wet, die Ik voor hun aangezicht gegeven had, verlaten hebben, en naar Mijn stem niet gehoord, noch daarnaar gewandeld hebben; 14Maar hebben gewandeld naar het goeddunken huns harten, en naar de Baals, hetwelk hun vaders hun geleerd hadden. 15Daarom zegt de HEERE der heirscharen, de God Israels, alzo: Ziet, Ik zal dit volk spijzen met alsem, en Ik zal hen drenken met gallewater; 16En Ik zal hen verstrooien onder de heidenen, die zij niet gekend hebben, zij noch hun vaders; en Ik zal het zwaard achter hen zenden, totdat Ik hen verteerd zal hebben. 17Zo zegt de HEERE der heirscharen: Merkt daarop, en roept klaagvrouwen, dat zij komen; en zendt henen naar de wijze vrouwen, dat zij komen. 18En haasten, en een weeklage over ons opheffen, dat onze ogen van tranen nederdalen, en onze oogleden van water vlieten. 19Want er is een stem van weeklage gehoord uit Sion: Hoe zijn wij verstoord! wij zijn zeer beschaamd, omdat wij het land hebben verlaten, omdat zij onze woningen hebben omgeworpen. 20Hoort dan des HEEREN woord, gij vrouwen! en uw oor ontvange het woord Zijns monds, en leert uw dochters weeklagen, en elke een haar metgezellin klaagliederen. 21Want de dood is geklommen in onze vensteren, hij is in onze paleizen gekomen, om de kinderkens uit te roeien van de wijken, de jongelingen van de straten. 22Spreek: Zo spreekt de HEERE: Ja, een dood lichaam des mensen zal liggen, als mest op het open veld, en als een garve achter den maaier, die niemand opzamelt. 23Zo zegt de HEERE: Een wijze beroeme zich niet in zijn wijsheid, en de sterke beroeme zich niet in zijn sterkheid; een rijke beroeme zich niet in zijn rijkdom; 24Maar die zich beroemt, beroeme zich hierin, dat hij verstaat, en Mij kent, dat Ik de HEERE ben, doende weldadigheid, recht en gerechtigheid op de aarde, want in die dingen heb Ik lust, spreekt de HEERE. 25Ziet, de dagen komen, spreekt de HEERE, dat Ik bezoeking zal doen over alle besnedenen, met degenen, die de voorhuid hebben; 26Over Egypte, en over Juda, en over Edom, en over de kinderen Ammons, en over Moab, en over allen, die aan de hoeken afgekort zijn, die in de woestijn wonen; want al de heidenen hebben de voorhuid, maar het ganse huis Israels heeft de voorhuid des harten.
