1O Israele, se tu torni, dice l’Eterno, se tu torni a me, e se togli dal mio cospetto le tue abominazioni, se non vai più vagando qua e là 2e giuri per l’Eterno che vive! con verità, con rettitudine e con giustizia, allora le nazioni saranno benedette in te, e in te si glorieranno. 3Poiché così parla l’Eterno a quei di Giuda e di Gerusalemme: Dissodatevi un campo nuovo, e non seminate fra le spine! 4Circoncidetevi per l’Eterno, circoncidete i vostri cuori, o uomini di Giuda e abitanti di Gerusalemme, affinché il mio furore non scoppi come un fuoco, e non s’infiammi sì che nessuno possa spegnerlo, a motivo della malvagità delle vostre azioni! 5Annunziate in Giuda, bandite questo in Gerusalemme, e dite: "Suonate le trombe nel paese!" gridate forte e dite: "Adunatevi ed entriamo nelle città forti!" 6Alzate la bandiera verso Sion, cercate un rifugio, non vi fermate, perch’io faccio venire dal settentrione una calamità e una grande rovina. 7Un leone balza fuori dal folto del bosco, e un distruttore di nazioni s’è messo in via, ha lasciato il suo luogo, per ridurre il tuo paese in desolazione, sì che le tue città saranno rovinate e prive d’abitanti. 8Perciò, cingetevi di sacchi, fate cordoglio, mandate lamenti! perché l’ardente ira dell’Eterno non s’è stornata da noi. 9E in quel giorno avverrà, dice l’Eterno, che il cuore del re e il cuore de’ capi verranno meno, i sacerdoti saranno attoniti, e i profeti stupefatti. 10Allora io dissi: "Ahi! Signore, Eterno! tu hai dunque ingannato questo popolo e Gerusalemme dicendo: Voi avrete pace mentre la spada penetra fino all’anima". 11In quel tempo si dirà a questo popolo e a Gerusalemme: Un vento ardente viene dalle alture del deserto verso la figliuola del mio popolo, non per vagliare, non per nettare il grano; 12un vento anche più impetuoso di quello verrà da parte mia; ora anch’io pronunzierò la sentenza contro di loro. 13Ecco, l’invasore sale come fan le nuvole, e i suoi carri son come un turbine; i suoi cavalli son più rapidi delle aquile. "Guai a noi! poiché siam devastati!" 14O Gerusalemme, netta il tuo cuore dalla malvagità, affinché tu sia salvata. Fino a quando albergheranno in te i tuoi pensieri iniqui? 15Poiché una voce che viene da Dan annunzia la calamità, e la bandisce dai colli d’Efraim. 16"Avvertitene le nazioni, fatelo sapere a Gerusalemme: degli assedianti vengono da un paese lontano, e mandan le loro grida contro le città di Giuda". 17Si son posti contro Gerusalemme da ogni lato, a guisa di guardie d’un campo, perch’ella s’è ribellata contro di me, dice l’Eterno. 18Il tuo procedere e le tue azioni t’hanno attirato queste cose; quest’è il frutto della tua malvagità; sì, è amaro; sì, è cosa che t’arriva al cuore. 19Le mie viscere! le mie viscere! Io sento un gran dolore! Oh le pareti del mio cuore! Il mio cuore mi batte in petto! Io non posso tacermi; poiché, anima mia, tu odi il suon della tromba, il grido di guerra. 20S’annunzia rovina sopra rovina, poiché tutto il paese è devastato. Le mie tende sono distrutte ad un tratto, i miei padiglioni, in un attimo. 21Fino a quando vedrò la bandiera e udrò il suon della tromba? 22Veramente il mio popolo è stolto, non mi conosce; son de’ figliuoli insensati, e non hanno intelligenza; sono sapienti per fare il male; ma il bene non lo sanno fare. 23Io guardo la terra, ed ecco è desolata e deserta; i cieli, e son senza luce. 24Guardo i monti, ed ecco tremano, e tutti i colli sono agitati. 25Guardo, ed ecco non c’è uomo, e tutti gli uccelli del cielo son volati via. 26Guardo, ed ecco il Carmelo è un deserto, e tutte le sue città sono abbattute dinanzi all’Eterno, dinanzi all’ardente sua ira. 27Poiché così parla l’Eterno: Tutto il paese sarà desolato, ma io non lo finirò del tutto. 28A motivo di questo, la terra fa cordoglio, e i cieli di sopra s’oscurano; perché io l’ho detto, l’ho stabilito, e non me ne pento, e non mi ritratterò. 29Al rumore dei cavalieri e degli arcieri tutte le città sono in fuga; tutti entrano nel folto de’ boschi, montano sulle rocce; tutte le città sono abbandonate, e non v’è più alcun abitante. 30E tu che stai per esser devastata, che fai? Hai un bel vestirti di scarlatto, un bel metterti i tuoi ornamenti d’oro, un bell’ingrandirti gli occhi col belletto! Invano t’abbellisci; i tuoi amanti ti sprezzano, voglion la tua vita. 31Poiché io odo de’ gridi come di donna ch’è nei dolori; un’angoscia come quella di donna nel suo primo parto; è la voce della figliuola di Sion, che sospira ansimando e stende le mani: "Ahi me lassa! che l’anima mia vien meno dinanzi agli uccisori".
1“If you will return, Israel,” says Yahweh, “if you will return to me, and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight; then you shall not be removed; 2and you shall swear, ‘As Yahweh lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness. The nations shall bless themselves in him, and in him shall they glory.” 3For thus says Yahweh to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, “Break up your fallow ground, and don’t sow among thorns. 4Circumcise yourselves to Yahweh, and take away the foreskins of your heart, you men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest my wrath go out like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it, because of the evil of your doings. 5Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, ‘Blow the trumpet in the land!’ Cry aloud and say, ‘Assemble yourselves! Let us go into the fortified cities!’ 6Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety! Don’t wait; for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction.” 7A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations; he is on his way, he has gone out from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant. 8For this clothe yourself with sackcloth, lament and wail; for the fierce anger of Yahweh hasn’t turned back from us. 9“It shall happen at that day,” says Yahweh, “that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.” 10Then I said, “Ah, Lord Yahweh! Surely you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ‘You shall have peace;’ whereas the sword reaches to the heart.” 11At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, “A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse; 12a full wind from these shall come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them.” 13Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined. 14Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your evil thoughts lodge within you? 15For a voice declares from Dan, and publishes evil from the hills of Ephraim: 16“Tell the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, ‘Watchers come from a far country, and raise their voice against the cities of Judah. 17As keepers of a field, they are against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me,’” says Yahweh. 18“Your way and your doings have brought these things to you. This is your wickedness; for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart.” 19My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I can’t hold my peace; because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. 20Destruction on destruction is cried; for the whole land is laid waste: suddenly are my tents destroyed, and my curtains in a moment. 21How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? 22“For my people are foolish, they don’t know me. They are foolish children, and they have no understanding. They are skillful in doing evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.” 23I saw the earth, and, behold, it was waste and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. 24I saw the mountains, and behold, they trembled, and all the hills moved back and forth. 25I saw, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the sky had fled. 26I saw, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness, and all its cities were broken down at the presence of Yahweh, before his fierce anger. 27For thus says Yahweh, “The whole land shall be a desolation; yet will I not make a full end. 28For this the earth will mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it, I have purposed it, and I have not repented, neither will I turn back from it.” 29Every city flees for the noise of the horsemen and archers; they go into the thickets, and climb up on the rocks: every city is forsaken, and not a man dwells therein. 30You, when you are made desolate, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with scarlet, though you deck you with ornaments of gold, though you enlarge your eyes with paint, in vain do you make yourself beautiful; your lovers despise you, they seek your life. 31For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who gives birth to her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, “Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.”
1Zo gij u bekeren zult, Israel! spreekt de HEERE, bekeer u tot Mij; en zo gij uw verfoeiselen van Mijn aangezicht zult wegdoen, zo zwerft niet om. 2Maar zweer: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft! in waarheid, in recht en in gerechtigheid; zo zullen zich de heidenen in Hem zegenen, en zich in Hem beroemen. 3Want zo zegt de HEERE tot de mannen van Juda, en tot Jeruzalem: Braakt ulieden een braakland, en zaait niet onder de doornen. 4Besnijdt u den HEERE en doet weg de voorhuiden uwer harten, gij mannen van Juda en inwoners van Jeruzalem! opdat Mijner grimmigheid niet uitvare als een vuur, en brande, dat niemand blussen kunne, vanwege de boosheid uwer handelingen. 5Verkondigt in Juda, en laat het horen te Jeruzalem, en zegt het; ja, blaast de bazuin in het land; roept met volle stem en zegt: Verzamelt ulieden, en laat ons ingaan in de vaste steden! 6Werpt de banier op naar Sion, vlucht met hopen, blijft niet staan! want Ik breng een kwaad aan van het noorden, en een grote breuk. 7De leeuw is opgekomen uit zijn haag, en de verderver der heidenen is opgetrokken, hij is uitgegaan uit zijn plaats, om uw land te stellen in verwoestingen; uw steden zullen verstoord worden, dat er niemand in wone. 8Hierom, gordt zakken aan, bedrijft misbaar en huilt; want de hittigheid van des HEEREN toorn is niet van ons afgekeerd. 9En het zal te dier tijd geschieden, spreekt de HEERE, dat het hart des konings en het hart der vorsten vergaan zal; en de priesters zullen zich ontzetten, en de profeten zich verwonderen. 10Toen zeide ik: Ach, Heere HEERE! waarlijk, Gij hebt dit volk en Jeruzalem grotelijks bedrogen, zeggende: Gijlieden zult vrede hebben; daar het zwaard tot aan de ziel raakt. 11Te dier tijd zal tot dit volk en tot Jeruzalem gezegd worden: Een dorre wind van de hoge plaatsen in de woestijn, van den weg der dochter Mijns volks; niet om te wannen, noch om te zuiveren. 12Er zal Mij een wind komen, die hun te sterk zal zijn. Nu zal Ik ook oordelen tegen hen uitspreken. 13Ziet, hij komt op als wolken, en zijn wagenen zijn als een wervelwind, zijn paarden zijn sneller dan arenden; wee ons, want wij zijn verwoest! 14Was uw hart van boosheid, o Jeruzalem! opdat gij behouden wordt; hoe lang zult gij de gedachten uwer ijdelheid in het binnenste van u laten vernachten? 15Want een stem verkondigt van Dan af, en doet ellende horen van het gebergte van Efraim. 16Vermeldt den volke, ziet, doet het horen tegen Jeruzalem; daar komen hoeders uit verren lande; en zij verheffen hun stem tegen de steden van Juda. 17Als de wachters der velden zijn zij rondom tegen haar; omdat zij tegen Mij wederspannig geweest is, spreekt de HEERE. 18Uw weg en uw handelingen hebben u deze dingen gedaan; dit is uw boosheid, dat het zo bitter is, dat het tot aan uw hart raakt. 19O mijn ingewand, mijn ingewand! ik heb barenswee, o wanden mijns harten! mijn hart maakt getier in mij, ik kan niet zwijgen; want gij, mijn ziel! hoort het geluid der bazuin en het krijgsgeschrei. 20Breuk op breuk wordt er uitgeroepen; want het ganse land is verstoord; haastelijk zijn mijn tenten verstoord, mijn gordijnen in een ogenblik! 21Hoe lang zal ik de banier zien, het geluid der bazuin horen? 22Zekerlijk, Mijn volk is dwaas, Mij kennen zij niet; het zijn zotte kinderen, en zij zijn niet verstandig; wijs zijn zij om kwaad te doen, maar goed te doen weten zij niet. 23Ik zag het land aan, en ziet, het was woest en ledig; ook naar den hemel, en zijn licht was er niet. 24Ik zag de bergen aan, en ziet, zij beefden; en al de heuvelen schudden. 25Ik zag, en ziet, er was geen mens; en alle vogelen des hemels waren weggevlogen. 26Ik zag, en ziet, het vruchtbare land was een woestijn, en al zijn steden waren afgebroken, vanwege den HEERE, vanwege de hittigheid Zijns toorns. 27Want zo zegt de HEERE: Dit ganse land zal een woestijn zijn (doch Ik zal geen voleinding maken); 28Hierom zal de aarde treuren, en de hemel daarboven zwart zijn; omdat Ik het heb gesproken, Ik heb het voorgenomen en het zal Mij niet rouwen, en Ik zal Mij daarvan niet afkeren. 29Van het geroep der ruiteren en boogschutters vluchten al de steden; zij gaan in de wolken, en klimmen op de rotsen; al de steden zijn verlaten, zodat niemand in dezelve woont. 30Wat zult gij dan doen, gij verwoeste? Al kleeddet gij u met scharlaken, al versierdet gij u met gouden sieraad, al schuurdet gij uw ogen met blanketsel, zo zoudt gij u toch tevergeefs oppronken; de boelen versmaden u, zij zullen uw ziel zoeken. 31Want ik hoor een stem als van een vrouw, die in arbeid is, een benauwdheid als van een, die in des eersten kinds nood is, de stem van de dochter Sions; zij hijgt, zij breidt haar handen uit, zeggende: O, wee mij nu, want mijn ziel is moede vanwege de doodslagers!
