E Geremia fece così. 13E quelli trassero su Geremia con quelle funi, e lo fecero salir fuori dalla cisterna. E Geremia rimase nel cortile della prigione. 14Allora il re Sedekia mandò a prendere il profeta Geremia, e se lo fece condurre al terzo ingresso della casa dell’Eterno; e il re disse a Geremia: "Io ti domando una cosa; non mi celar nulla". 15E Geremia rispose a Sedekia: "Se te la dico, non è egli certo che mi farai morire? E se ti do qualche consiglio, non mi darai ascolto". 16E il re Sedekia giurò in segreto a Geremia, dicendo: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno, il quale ci ha dato questa vita, vive, io non ti farò morire, e non ti darò in mano di questi uomini che cercan la tua vita". 17Allora Geremia disse a Sedekia: "Così parla l’Eterno, l’Iddio degli eserciti, l’Iddio d’Israele: Se tu ti vai ad arrendere ai capi del re di Babilonia, avrai salva la vita; questa città non sarà data alle fiamme, e vivrai tu con la tua casa; 18ma se non vai ad arrenderti ai capi del re di Babilonia, questa città sarà data in mano de’ Caldei che la daranno alle fiamme, e tu non scamperai dalle loro mani". 19E il re Sedekia disse a Geremia: "Io temo que’ Giudei che si sono arresi ai Caldei, ch’io non abbia ad esser dato nelle loro mani, e ch’essi non mi scherniscano". 20Ma Geremia rispose: "Tu non sarai dato nelle loro mani. Deh! ascolta la voce dell’Eterno in questo che ti dico: tutto andrà bene per te, e tu vivrai. 21Ma se rifiuti d’uscire, ecco quello che l’Eterno m’ha fatto vedere: 22Tutte le donne rimaste nella casa del re di Giuda saranno menate fuori ai capi del re di Babilonia; e queste donne diranno: I tuoi familiari amici t’hanno incitato, t’hanno vinto; i tuoi piedi sono affondati nel fango, e quelli si son ritirati". 23E tutte le tue mogli coi tuoi figliuoli saranno menate ai Caldei; e tu non scamperai dalle loro mani, ma sarai preso e dato in mano del re di Babilonia, e questa città sarà data alle fiamme". 24E Sedekia disse a Geremia: "Nessuno sappia nulla di queste parole, e tu non morrai. 25E se i capi odono che io ho parlato teco e vengono da te a dirti: Dichiaraci quello che tu hai detto al re; non ce lo celare, e non ti faremo morire; e il re che t’ha detto?… 26rispondi loro: Io ho presentato al re la mia supplicazione, ch’egli non mi facesse ritornare nella casa di Gionathan, per morirvi". 27E tutti i capi vennero a Geremia, e lo interrogarono; ma egli rispose loro secondo tutte le parole che il re gli aveva comandate, e quelli lo lasciarono in pace perché la cosa non s’era divulgata. 28E Geremia rimase nel cortile della prigione fino al giorno che Gerusalemme fu presa.
1Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying, 2Thus says Yahweh, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey, and he shall live. 3Thus says Yahweh, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it. 4Then the princes said to the king, “Please let this man be put to death; because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man doesn’t seek the welfare of this people, but the hurt.” 5Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he who can do anything against you. 6Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. In the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire. 7Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), 8Ebedmelech went out of the king’s house, and spoke to the king, saying, 9My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city. 10Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he dies. 11So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah. 12Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under your armpits under the cords. Jeremiah did so. 13So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard. 14Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in Yahweh’s house: and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you something. Hide nothing from me. 15Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me. 16So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life. 17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Armies, the God of Israel: If you will go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house. 18But if you will not go out to the king of Babylon’s princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand. 19Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me. 20But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. Obey, I beg you, the voice of Yahweh, in that which I speak to you: so it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live. 21But if you refuse to go out, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me: 22behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah’s house shall be brought out to the king of Babylon’s princes, and those women shall say, Your familiar friends have set you on, and have prevailed over you. Your feet are sunk in the mire, they have turned away back. 23They shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire. 24Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die. 25But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don’t hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said to you: 26then you shall tell them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan’s house, to die there. 27Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived. 28So Jeremiah stayed in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.

En Jeremia deed alzo. 13En zij trokken Jeremia bij de zelen, en haalden hem op uit de kuil; en Jeremia bleef in het voorhof der bewaring. 14Toen zond de koning Zedekia henen, en liet den profeet Jeremia tot zich halen, in den derden ingang, die aan des HEEREN huis was; en de koning zeide tot Jeremia: Ik zal u een ding vragen, verheel geen ding voor mij. 15En Jeremia zeide tot Zedekia: Als ik het u verklaren zal, zult gij mij niet zekerlijk doden? En als ik u raad zal geven, gij zult toch naar mij niet horen. 16Toen zwoer de koning Zedekia aan Jeremia in het verborgene, zeggende: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, Die ons deze ziel gemaakt heeft: Indien ik u zal doden, of indien ik u zal overgeven in de hand dezer mannen, die uw ziel zoeken! 17Jeremia dan zeide tot Zedekia: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God der heirscharen, de God Israels: Indien gij gewilliglijk tot de vorsten des koning van Babel zult uitgaan, zo zal uw ziel leven, en deze stad zal niet verbrand worden met vuur; en gij zult leven, gij en uw huis. 18Maar indien gij tot de vorsten des konings van Babel niet zult uitgaan, zo zal deze stad gegeven worden in de hand der Chaldeen, en zij zullen ze met vuur verbranden; ook zult gij van hunlieder hand niet ontkomen. 19En de koning Zedekia zeide tot Jeremia: Ik ben bevreesd voor de Joden, die tot de Chaldeen gevallen zijn, dat zij mij misschien in derzelver hand overgeven, en zij den spot met mij drijven. 20En Jeremia zeide: Zij zullen u niet overgeven; wees toch gehoorzaam aan de stem des HEEREN, naar dewelke ik tot u spreek; zo zal het u welgaan, en uw ziel zal leven. 21Maar indien gij weigert uit te gaan, zo is dit het woord, dat de HEERE mij heeft doen zien; 22Ziedaar, al de vrouwen, die in het huis des konings van Juda zijn overgebleven, zullen uitgevoerd worden tot de vorsten des konings van Babel; en dezelve zullen zeggen: Uw vredegenoten hebben u aangehitst, en hebben u overmocht; uw voeten zijn in den modder gezonken; zij zijn achterwaarts gekeerd! 23Zij zullen dan al uw vrouwen en al uw zonen tot de Chaldeen uitvoeren; ook zult gij zelf van hun hand niet ontkomen; maar gij zult door de hand des konings van Babel gegrepen worden, en gij zult deze stad met vuur verbranden. 24Toen zeide Zedekia tot Jeremia: Dat niemand wete van deze woorden, zo zult gij niet sterven. 25En als de vorsten zullen horen, dat ik met u gesproken heb, en tot u komen, en tot u zeggen: Verklaar ons nu, wat hebt gij tot den koning gesproken? verheel het niet voor ons, zo zullen wij u niet doden; en wat heeft de koning tot u gesproken? 26Zo zult gij tot hen zeggen: Ik wierp mijn smeking voor des konings aangezicht neder, dat hij mij niet zou weder laten brengen in Jonathans huis, om aldaar te sterven. 27Als dan al de vorsten tot Jeremia kwamen, en hem vraagden, verklaarde hij hun, naar al deze woorden, die de koning geboden had; en zij lieten van hem af, omdat de zaak niet was gehoord. 28En Jeremia bleef in het voorhof der bewaring tot op den dag, dat Jeruzalem werd ingenomen; en hij was er nog, als Jeruzalem was ingenomen.
