1Malheur à ceux qui prononcent des ordonnances iniques, Et à ceux qui transcrivent des arrêts injustes, 2Pour refuser justice aux pauvres, Et ravir leur droit aux malheureux de mon peuple, Pour faire des veuves leur proie, Et des orphelins leur butin ! 3Que ferez-vous au jour du châtiment, Et de la ruine qui du lointain fondra sur vous ? Vers qui fuirez-vous, pour avoir du secours, Et où laisserez-vous votre gloire ? 4Les uns seront courbés parmi les captifs, Les autres tomberont parmi les morts. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s’apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue. 5Malheur à l’Assyrien, verge de ma colère ! La verge dans sa main, c’est l’instrument de ma fureur. 6Je l’ai lâché contre une nation impie, Je l’ai fait marcher contre le peuple de mon courroux, Pour qu’il se livre au pillage et fasse du butin, Pour qu’il le foule aux pieds comme la boue des rues. 7Mais il n’en juge pas ainsi, Et ce n’est pas là la pensée de son cœur ; Il ne songe qu’à détruire, Qu’à exterminer les nations en foule. 8Car il dit : Mes princes ne sont-ils pas autant de rois ? 9N’en a-t-il pas été de Calno comme de Carkemisch ? N’en a-t-il pas été de Hamath comme d’Arpad ? N’en a-t-il pas été de Samarie comme de Damas ? 10De même que ma main a atteint les royaumes des idoles, Où il y avait plus d’images qu’à Jérusalem et à Samarie, 11Ce que j’ai fait à Samarie et à ses idoles, Ne le ferai-je pas à Jérusalem et à ses images ? 12Mais, quand le Seigneur aura accompli toute son œuvre Sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, Je punirai le roi d’Assyrie pour le fruit de son cœur orgueilleux, Et pour l’arrogance de ses regards hautains. 13Car il dit : C’est par la force de ma main que j’ai agi, C’est par ma sagesse, car je suis intelligent ; J’ai reculé les limites des peuples, et pillé leurs trésors, Et, comme un héros, j’ai renversé ceux qui siégeaient sur des trônes ; 14J’ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid, Et, comme on ramasse des œufs abandonnés, J’ai ramassé toute la terre : Nul n’a remué l’aile, Ni ouvert le bec, ni poussé un cri. - 15La hache se glorifie-t-elle envers celui qui s’en sert ? Ou la scie est-elle arrogante envers celui qui la manie ? Comme si la verge faisait mouvoir celui qui la lève, Comme si le bâton soulevait celui qui n’est pas du bois ! 16C’est pourquoi le Seigneur, le Seigneur des armées, enverra Le dépérissement parmi ses robustes guerriers ; Et, sous sa magnificence, éclatera un embrasement, Comme l’embrasement d’un feu. 17La lumière d’Israël deviendra un feu, Et son Saint une flamme, Qui consumera et dévorera ses épines et ses ronces, En un seul jour ; 18Qui consumera, corps et âme, La magnificence de sa forêt et de ses campagnes. Il en sera comme d’un malade, qui tombe en défaillance. 19Le reste des arbres de sa forêt pourra être compté, Et un enfant en écrirait le nombre. 20En ce jour-là, Le reste d’Israël et les réchappés de la maison de Jacob, Cesseront de s’appuyer sur celui qui les frappait ; Ils s’appuieront avec confiance sur l’Éternel, le Saint d’Israël. 21Le reste reviendra, le reste de Jacob, Au Dieu puissant. 22Quand ton peuple, ô Israël, serait comme le sable de la mer, Un reste seulement reviendra ; La destruction est résolue, elle fera déborder la justice. 23Et cette destruction qui a été résolue, Le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées, l’accomplira dans tout le pays. 24Cependant, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées : Ô mon peuple, qui habites en Sion, ne crains pas l’Assyrien ! Il te frappe de la verge, Et il lève son bâton sur toi, comme faisaient les Égyptiens. 25Mais, encore un peu de temps, Et le châtiment cessera, Puis ma colère se tournera contre lui pour l’anéantir. 26L’Éternel des armées agitera le fouet contre lui, Comme il frappa Madian au rocher d’Oreb ; Et, de même qu’il leva son bâton sur la mer, Il le lèvera encore, comme en Égypte. 27En ce jour, son fardeau sera ôté de dessus ton épaule, Et son joug de dessus ton cou ; Et la graisse fera éclater le joug. 28Il marche sur Ajjath, traverse Migron, Laisse ses bagages à Micmasch. 29Ils passent le défilé, Ils couchent à Guéba ; Rama tremble, Guibea de Saül prend la fuite. 30Fais éclater ta voix, fille de Gallim ! 1Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write oppressive decrees; 2to deprive the needy from justice, and to rob the poor among my people of their rights, that widows may be their plunder, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! 3What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth? 4They will only bow down under the prisoners, and will fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still. 5Alas Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation! 6I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people who anger me will I give him a command to take the plunder and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. 7However he doesn’t mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations. 8For he says, “Aren’t all of my princes kings? 9Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers. 14My hand has found the riches of the peoples like a nest, and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned, have I gathered all the earth. There was no one who moved their wing, or that opened their mouth, or chirped.” 15Should an ax brag against him who chops with it? Should a saw exalt itself above him who saws with it? As if a rod should lift those who lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up someone who is not wood. 16Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire. 17The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day. 18He will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body. It will be as when a standard bearer faints. 19The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child could write their number. 20It will come to pass in that day that the remnant of Israel, and those who have escaped from the house of Jacob will no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21A remnant will return, even the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22For though your people, Israel, are like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness. 23For the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will make a full end, and that determined, in the midst of all the earth. 24Therefore the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, says “My people who dwell in Zion, don’t be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, as Egypt did. 25For yet a very little while, and the indignation against you will be accomplished, and my anger will be directed to his destruction.” 26Yahweh of Armies will stir up a scourge against him, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb. His rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up like he did against Egypt. 27It will happen in that day, that his burden will depart from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing oil. 28He has come to Aiath. He has passed through Migron. At Michmash he stores his baggage. 29They have gone over the pass. They have taken up their lodging at Geba. Ramah trembles. Gibeah of Saul has fled. 30Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of Gallim! Listen, Laishah! You poor Anathoth! 31Madmenah is a fugitive. The inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. 32This very day he will halt at Nob. He shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. 33Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, will lop the boughs with terror. The tall will be cut down, and the lofty will be brought low. 34He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One.

Is niet Samaria gelijk Damaskus? 10Gelijk als mijn hand gevonden heeft de koninkrijken der afgoden, ofschoon hun gesneden beelden beter zijn, dan die van Jeruzalem, en dan die van Samaria; 11Gelijk als ik gedaan heb aan Samaria en aan haar afgoden, zou ik alzo niet kunnen doen aan Jeruzalem en aan haar afgoden? 12Want het zal geschieden, als de HEERE een einde zal gemaakt hebben van al Zijn werk op den berg Sion en te Jeruzalem, dan zal Ik te huis zoeken de vrucht van de grootsheid des harten van den koning van Assyrie, en de pracht van de hoogheid zijner ogen. 13Omdat hij gezegd heeft: Door de kracht mijner hand heb ik het gedaan, en door mijn wijsheid, want ik ben verstandig; en ik heb de landpalen der volken weggenomen, en heb hun voorraad geroofd, en heb als een geweldige de inwoners doen nederdalen; 14En mijn hand heeft gevonden het vermogen der volken, als een nest, en ik heb het ganse aardrijk samengeraapt, gelijk men de eieren die verlaten zijn, samenraapt; en er is niemand geweest, die een vleugel verroerde, of den bek opendeed, of piepte. 15Zal een bijl zich beroemen tegen dien, die daarmede houwt? Zal een zaag pochen tegen dien, die ze trekt? Alsof een staf bewoog degenen, die hem opheffen? Als men een stok opheft, is het geen hout? 16Daarom zal de Heere HEERE der heirscharen onder zijn vetten een magerheid zenden; en onder zijn heerlijkheid zal Hij een brand doen branden, als den brand des vuurs. 17Want het Licht van Israel zal tot een vuur zijn, en zijn Heilige tot een vlam, welke in brand steken en verteren zal zijn doornen en zijn distelen, op een dag. 18Ook zal Hij verteren de heerlijkheid zijns wouds en zijns vruchtbaren velds; van de ziel af, tot het vlees toe; en hij zal zijn, gelijk als wanneer een vaandrager versmelt. 19En de overgebleven bomen zijns wouds zullen weinig in getal zijn, ja, een jongen zou ze opschrijven. 20En het zal geschieden te dien dage, dat het overblijfsel van Israel, en de ontkomenen van het huis Jakobs niet meer steunen zullen op dien, die ze geslagen heeft; maar zij zullen steunen op den HEERE, den Heilige Israels, oprechtelijk. 21Het overblijfsel zal wederkeren, het overblijfsel van Jakob, tot den sterken God! 22Want ofschoon uw volk, o Israel! is gelijk het zand der zee, zo zal toch maar het overblijfsel daarvan wederkeren; de verdelging is vastelijk besloten, overvloeiende met gerechtigheid. 23Want een verdelging, die vastelijk besloten is, zal de Heere HEERE der heirscharen doen in het midden dezes gansen lands. 24Daarom zegt de Heere HEERE der heirscharen alzo: Vreest niet, gij Mijn volk, dat te Sion woont! voor Assur, als hij u met de roede zal slaan, en hij zijn staf tegen u zal opheffen, naar de wijze der Egyptenaren; 25Want nog een klein weinig, zo zal volbracht worden de gramschap, en Mijn toorn tot hun vernieling. 26Want de HEERE der heirscharen zal tegen hem een gesel verwekken, gelijk de slachting van Midian was aan de rots van Oreb; en gelijk Zijn staf over de zee was, denwelken Hij verheffen zal, naar de wijze der Egyptenaren. 27En het zal geschieden ten zelfden dage, dat zijn last zal afwijken van uw schouder, en zijn juk van uw hals; en het juk zal verdorven worden, om des Gezalfden wil. 28Hij komt te Ajath, hij trekt door Migron; te Michmas legt hij zijn gereedschap af. 29Zij trekken door den doorgang, te Geba houden zij hun vernachting; Rama beeft, Gibea Sauls vlucht. 30Roep luide met uw stem, gij dochter van Gallim! laat ze horen tot Lais toe, o ellendige Anathoth! 31Madmena vliedt weg, de inwoners van Gebim vluchten met hopen. 32Nog een dag blijft hij te Nob; hij zal zijn hand bewegen tegen den berg der dochter van Sion, den heuvel van Jeruzalem. 33Doch ziet, de Heere HEERE der heirscharen zal met geweld de takken afkappen, en die hoog van gestalte zijn, zullen nedergehouwen worden; en de verhevenen zullen vernederd worden. 34En Hij zal met ijzer de verwarde struiken des wouds omhouwen; en de Libanon zal vallen door den Heerlijke.
