1La parole que l’Éternel prononça sur Babylone, sur le pays des Chaldéens, par Jérémie, le prophète : 2Annoncez-le parmi les nations, publiez-le, élevez une bannière ! Publiez-le, ne cachez rien ! Dites : Babylone est prise ! Bel est confondu, Merodac est brisé ! Ses idoles sont confondues, ses idoles sont brisées ! 3Car une nation monte contre elle du septentrion, Elle réduira son pays en désert, Il n’y aura plus d’habitants ; Hommes et bêtes fuient, s’en vont. 4En ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l’Éternel, Les enfants d’Israël et les enfants de Juda reviendront ensemble ; Ils marcheront en pleurant, Et ils chercheront l’Éternel, leur Dieu. 5Ils s’informeront du chemin de Sion, Ils tourneront vers elle leurs regards : Venez, attachez-vous à l’Éternel, Par une alliance éternelle qui ne soit jamais oubliée ! 6Mon peuple était un troupeau de brebis perdues ; Leurs bergers les égaraient, les faisaient errer par les montagnes ; Elles allaient des montagnes sur les collines, Oubliant leur bercail. 7Tous ceux qui les trouvaient les dévoraient, Et leurs ennemis disaient : Nous ne sommes point coupables, Puisqu’ils ont péché contre l’Éternel, la demeure de la justice, Contre l’Éternel, l’espérance de leurs pères. 8Fuyez de Babylone, sortez du pays des Chaldéens, Et soyez comme des boucs à la tête du troupeau ! 9Car voici, je vais susciter et faire monter contre Babylone Une multitude de grandes nations du pays du septentrion ; Elles se rangeront en bataille contre elle, et s’en empareront ; Leurs flèches sont comme un habile guerrier, Qui ne revient pas à vide. 10Et la Chaldée sera livrée au pillage ; Tous ceux qui la pilleront seront rassasiés, dit l’Éternel. 11Oui, soyez dans la joie, dans l’allégresse, Vous qui avez pillé mon héritage ! Oui, bondissez comme une génisse dans l’herbe, Hennissez comme des chevaux fougueux ! 12Votre mère est couverte de confusion, Celle qui vous a enfantés rougit de honte ; Voici, elle est la dernière des nations, C’est un désert, une terre sèche et aride. 13À cause de la colère de l’Éternel, elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera plus qu’une solitude . Tous ceux qui passeront près de Babylone Seront dans l’étonnement et siffleront sur toutes ses plaies. 14Rangez-vous en bataille autour de Babylone, vous tous, archers ! Tirez contre elle, n’épargnez pas les flèches ! Car elle a péché contre l’Éternel. 15Poussez de tous côtés contre elle un cri de guerre ! Elle tend les mains ; Ses fondements s’écroulent ; Ses murs sont renversés. Car c’est la vengeance de l’Éternel. Vengez-vous sur elle ! Faites-lui comme elle a fait ! 16Exterminez de Babylone celui qui sème, Et celui qui manie la faucille au temps de la moisson ! Devant le glaive destructeur, Que chacun se tourne vers son peuple, Que chacun fuie vers son pays. 17Israël est une brebis égarée, que les lions ont chassée ; Le roi d’Assyrie l’a dévorée le premier ; Et ce dernier lui a brisé les os, Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone. 18C’est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées, le Dieu d’Israël : Voici, je châtierai le roi de Babylone et son pays, Comme j’ai châtié le roi d’Assyrie. 19Je ramènerai Israël dans sa demeure ; Il aura ses pâturages du Carmel et du Basan, Et son âme se rassasiera sur la montagne d’Éphraïm et dans Galaad. 20En ces jours, en ce temps-là, dit l’Éternel, On cherchera l’iniquité d’Israël, et elle n’existera plus, Le péché de Juda, et il ne se trouvera plus ; Car je pardonnerai au reste que j’aurai laissé. 21Monte contre le pays doublement rebelle, Contre ses habitants, et châtie-les ! Poursuis, massacre, extermine-les ! dit l’Éternel, Exécute entièrement mes ordres ! 22Des cris de guerre retentissent dans le pays, Et le désastre est grand. 23Eh quoi ! il est rompu, brisé, le marteau de toute la terre ! Babylone est détruite au milieu des nations ! 24Je t’ai tendu un piège, et tu as été prise, Babylone, À l’improviste ; Tu as été atteinte, saisie, Parce que tu as lutté contre l’Éternel. 25L’Éternel a ouvert son arsenal, Et il en a tiré les armes de sa colère ; Car c’est là une œuvre du Seigneur, de l’Éternel des armées, Dans le pays des Chaldéens. 26Pénétrez de toutes parts dans Babylone, ouvrez ses greniers, Faites-y des monceaux comme des tas de gerbes, Et détruisez-la ! Qu’il ne reste plus rien d’elle ! 27Tuez tous ses taureaux, qu’on les égorge ! Malheur à eux ! car leur jour est arrivé, Le temps de leur châtiment. 28Écoutez les cris des fuyards, de ceux qui se sauvent du pays de Babylone Pour annoncer dans Sion la vengeance de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, La vengeance de son temple ! 29Appelez contre Babylone les archers, vous tous qui maniez l’arc ! Campez autour d’elle, que personne n’échappe, Rendez-lui selon ses œuvres, Faites-lui entièrement comme elle a fait ! Car elle s’est élevée avec fierté contre l’Éternel, Contre le Saint d’Israël. 30C’est pourquoi ses jeunes gens tomberont dans les rues, Et tous ses hommes de guerre périront en ce jour, Dit l’Éternel. 31Voici, j’en veux à toi, orgueilleuse ! Dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel des armées ; Car ton jour est arrivé, Le temps de ton châtiment. 32L’orgueilleuse chancellera et tombera, Et personne ne la relèvera ; Je mettrai le feu à ses villes, Et il en dévorera tous les alentours. 33Ainsi parle l’Éternel des armées : Les enfants d’Israël et les enfants de Juda sont ensemble opprimés ; Tous ceux qui les ont emmenés captifs les retiennent, Et refusent de les relâcher. 34Mais leur vengeur est puissant, Lui dont l’Éternel des armées est le nom ; Il défendra leur cause, Afin de donner le repos au pays, Et de faire trembler les habitants de Babylone. 35L’épée contre les Chaldéens ! dit l’Éternel, Contre les habitants de Babylone, ses chefs et ses sages ! 36L’épée contre les prophètes de mensonge ! qu’ils soient comme des insensés ! L’épée contre ses vaillants hommes ! qu’ils soient consternés ! 37L’épée contre ses chevaux et ses chars ! Contre les gens de toute espèce qui sont au milieu d’elle ! Qu’ils deviennent semblables à des femmes ! L’épée contre ses trésors ! qu’ils soient pillés ! 38La sécheresse contre ses eaux ! qu’elles tarissent ! Car c’est un pays d’idoles ; Ils sont fous de leurs idoles. 39C’est pourquoi les animaux du désert s’y établiront avec les chacals, Et les autruches y feront leur demeure ; Elle ne sera plus jamais habitée, Elle ne sera plus jamais peuplée. 40Comme Sodome et Gomorrhe, et les villes voisines, que Dieu détruisit, Dit l’Éternel, Elle ne sera plus habitée, Elle ne sera le séjour d’aucun homme. 41Voici, un peuple vient du septentrion, Une grande nation et des rois puissants Se lèvent des extrémités de la terre. 42Ils portent l’arc et le javelot ; Ils sont cruels, sans miséricorde ; Leur voix mugit comme la mer ; Ils sont montés sur des chevaux, Prêts à combattre comme un seul homme, Contre toi, fille de Babylone ! 43Le roi de Babylone apprend la nouvelle, Et ses mains s’affaiblissent, L’angoisse le saisit, Comme la douleur d’une femme qui accouche… 44Voici, tel qu’un lion, il monte des rives orgueilleuses du Jourdain Contre la demeure forte ; Soudain je les en chasserai, Et j’établirai sur elle celui que j’ai choisi. Car qui est semblable à moi ? qui me donnera des ordres ? Et quel est le chef qui me résistera ? 45C’est pourquoi écoutez la résolution que l’Éternel a prise contre Babylone, Et les desseins qu’il a conçus contre le pays des Chaldéens ! Certainement on les traînera comme de faibles brebis, Certainement on ravagera leur demeure. 46Au bruit de la prise de Babylone la terre tremble, Et un cri se fait entendre parmi les nations.
1The word that Yahweh spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet. 2Declare among the nations and publish, and set up a standard; publish, and don’t conceal: say, Babylon is taken, Bel is disappointed, Merodach is dismayed; her images are disappointed, her idols are dismayed. 3For out of the north there comes up a nation against her, which shall make her land desolate, and no one shall dwell therein: they are fled, they are gone, both man and animal. 4In those days, and in that time, says Yahweh, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together; they shall go on their way weeping, and shall seek Yahweh their God. 5They shall inquire concerning Zion with their faces turned toward it, saying, Come, and join yourselves to Yahweh in an everlasting covenant that shall not be forgotten. 6My people have been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray; they have turned them away on the mountains; they have gone from mountain to hill; they have forgotten their resting place. 7All who found them have devoured them; and their adversaries said, We are not guilty, because they have sinned against Yahweh, the habitation of righteousness, even Yahweh, the hope of their fathers. 8Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as the male goats before the flocks. 9For, behold, I will stir up and cause to come up against Babylon a company of great nations from the north country; and they shall set themselves in array against her; from there she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of an expert mighty man; no one shall return in vain. 10Chaldea shall be a prey: all who prey on her shall be satisfied, says Yahweh. 11Because you are glad, because you rejoice, O you who plunder my heritage, because you are wanton as a heifer that treads out the grain, and neigh as strong horses; 12your mother shall be utterly disappointed; she who bore you shall be confounded: behold, she shall be the least of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert. 13Because of the wrath of Yahweh she shall not be inhabited, but she shall be wholly desolate: everyone who goes by Babylon shall be astonished, and hiss at all her plagues. 14Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows: for she has sinned against Yahweh. 15Shout against her all around: she has submitted herself; her bulwarks are fallen, her walls are thrown down; for it is the vengeance of Yahweh: take vengeance on her; as she has done, do to her. 16Cut off the sower from Babylon, and him who handles the sickle in the time of harvest: for fear of the oppressing sword they shall turn everyone to his people, and they shall flee everyone to his own land. 17Israel is a hunted sheep; the lions have driven him away: first, the king of Assyria devoured him; and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones. 18Therefore thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel: Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land, as I have punished the king of Assyria. 19I will bring Israel again to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead. 20In those days, and in that time, says Yahweh, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be no one; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I leave as a remnant. 21Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: kill and utterly destroy after them, says Yahweh, and do according to all that I have commanded you. 22A sound of battle is in the land, and of great destruction. 23How is the hammer of the whole earth cut apart and broken! how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations! 24I have laid a snare for you, and you are also taken, Babylon, and you weren’t aware: you are found, and also caught, because you have striven against Yahweh. 25Yahweh has opened his armory, and has brought out the weapons of his indignation; for the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans. 26Come against her from the utmost border; open her storehouses; cast her up as heaps, and destroy her utterly; let nothing of her be left. 27Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter: woe to them! for their day has come, the time of their visitation. 28The voice of those who flee and escape out of the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of Yahweh our God, the vengeance of his temple. 29Call together the archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow; encamp against her all around; let none of it escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she has done, do to her; for she has been proud against Yahweh, against the Holy One of Israel. 30Therefore her young men will fall in her streets, and all her men of war will be brought to silence in that day, says Yahweh. 31Behold, I am against you, you proud one, says the Lord, Yahweh of Armies; for your day has come, the time that I will visit you. 32The proud one shall stumble and fall, and no one shall raise him up; and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all who are around him. 33Thus says Yahweh of Armies: The children of Israel and the children of Judah are oppressed together; and all who took them captive hold them fast; they refuse to let them go. 34Their Redeemer is strong; Yahweh of Armies is his name: he will thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon. 35A sword is on the Chaldeans, says Yahweh, and on the inhabitants of Babylon, and on her princes, and on her wise men. 36A sword is on the boasters, and they shall become fools; a sword is on her mighty men, and they shall be dismayed. 37A sword is on their horses, and on their chariots, and on all the mixed people who are in the midst of her; and they shall become as women: a sword is on her treasures, and they shall be robbed. 38A drought is on her waters, and they shall be dried up; for it is a land of engraved images, and they are mad over idols. 39Therefore the wild animals of the desert with the wolves shall dwell there, and the ostriches shall dwell therein: and it shall be no more inhabited forever; neither shall it be lived in from generation to generation. 40As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbor cities of it, says Yahweh, so shall no man dwell there, neither shall any son of man live therein. 41Behold, a people comes from the north; and a great nation and many kings shall be stirred up from the uttermost parts of the earth. 42They lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roars like the sea; and they ride on horses, everyone set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, daughter of Babylon. 43The king of Babylon has heard the news of them, and his hands wax feeble: anguish has taken hold of him, pains as of a woman in labor. 44Behold, the enemy shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoever is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd who can stand before me? 45Therefore hear the counsel of Yahweh, that he has taken against Babylon; and his purposes, that he has purposed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely they shall drag them away, even the little ones of the flock; surely he shall make their habitation desolate over them. 46At the noise of the taking of Babylon the earth trembles, and the cry is heard among the nations.
1Het woord, dat de HEERE gesproken heeft tegen Babel, tegen het land der Chaldeen, door den dienst van den profeet Jeremia. 2Verkondigt onder de heidenen, en doet horen, en werpt een banier op, laat horen, verbergt het niet; zegt: Babel is ingenomen, Bel is beschaamd, Merodach is verpletterd, haar afgoden zijn beschaamd, haar drekgoden zijn verpletterd! 3Want een volk komt tegen haar op van het noorden; dat zal haar land zetten in verwoesting, dat er geen inwoner in zal zijn; van de mensen aan tot de beesten toe zijn zij weggezworven, doorgegaan! 4In dezelve dagen en ter zelver tijd, spreekt de HEERE, zullen de kinderen Israels komen, zij en de kinderen van Juda te zamen; wandelende en wenende zullen zij henengaan, en den HEERE, hun God, zoeken. 5Zij zullen naar Sion vragen; op den weg herwaarts zullen hun aangezichten zijn; zij zullen komen en den HEERE toegevoegd worden, met een eeuwig verbond, dat niet zal worden vergeten. 6Mijn volk waren verloren schapen, hun herders hadden hen verleid, zij hadden hen gevoerd naar de bergen, zij gingen van berg tot heuvel, zij vergaten hun legering. 7Allen, die hen vonden, aten hen op, en hun wederpartijders zeiden: Wij zullen geen schuld hebben; daarom dat zij gezondigd hebben tegen den HEERE, in de woning der gerechtigheid, ja, tegen den HEERE, de Verwachting hunner vaderen. 8Vliedt weg uit het midden van Babel, en gaat uit der Chaldeen land; en weest als de bokken voor de kudde henen. 9Want ziet, Ik zal een verzameling van grote volken uit het land van het noorden verwekken, en tegen Babel opbrengen; die zullen zich tegen haar rusten; van daar zal zij ingenomen worden; hun pijlen zullen zijn als eens kloeken helds, geen zal ledig wederkeren. 10En Chaldea zal ten roof zijn; allen, die het beroven, zullen verzadigd worden, spreekt de HEERE. 11Omdat gij u verblijd hebt, omdat gij van vreugde hebt opgesprongen, gij plunderaars Mijner erfenis! omdat gij geil geworden zijt als een grazige vaars, en hebt gebriest als de sterke paarden; 12Zo is uw moeder zeer beschaamd; die u gebaard heeft, is schaamrood geworden; ziet, zij is geworden de achterste der heidenen, een woestijn, dorheid en wildernis. 13Vanwege de verbolgenheid des HEEREN zal zij niet bewoond worden, maar zij zal geheel een verwoesting worden; al wie aan Babel voorbijgaat, zal zich ontzetten, en fluiten over al haar plagen. 14Rust u tegen Babel rondom, gij allen, die den boog spant! schiet in haar, en spaart de pijlen niet; want zij heeft tegen den HEERE gezondigd. 15Juicht over haar rondom, zij heeft haar hand gegeven; haar fondamenten zijn gevallen, haar muren zijn afgebroken; want dat is des HEEREN wraak, wreekt u aan haar, doet haar, gelijk als zij gedaan heeft! 16Roeit uit van Babel den zaaier, en dien, die de sikkel handelt in den oogsttijd; laat hen vanwege het verdrukkende zwaard, zich keren, een iegelijk tot zijn volk, en vlieden, een iegelijk naar zijn land. 17Israel is een verbijsterd lam, dat de leeuwen verjaagd hebben; de eerste, die hem heeft opgegeten, was de koning van Assur, en deze de laatste, Nebukadrezar, de koning van Babel, heeft hem de beenderen verbrijzeld. 18Daarom, zo zegt de HEERE der heirscharen, de God Israels: Ziet, Ik zal bezoeking doen over den koning van Babel en over zijn land, gelijk als Ik bezoeking gedaan heb over den koning van Assur. 19En Ik zal Israel weder tot zijn woning brengen, en hij zal weiden op den Karmel en op den Basan; en zijn ziel zal op het gebergte van Efraim en Gilead verzadigd worden. 20In die dagen en te dier tijd, spreekt de HEERE, zal Israels ongerechtigheid gezocht worden, maar zij zal er niet zijn, en de zonden van Juda, maar zullen niet gevonden worden; want Ik zal ze dengenen vergeven, die Ik zal doen overblijven. 21Tegen het land Merathaim, trek tegen hetzelve op, en tegen de inwoners van Pekod; verwoest en verban achter hen, spreekt de HEERE, en doe naar alles, wat Ik u geboden heb. 22Er is een krijgsgeschrei in het land, en een grote breuk. 23Hoe is de hamer der ganse aarde zo afgehouwen en verbroken! Hoe is Babel geworden tot een ontzetting onder de heidenen. 24Ik heb u een strik gesteld, dies zijt gij ook gevangen, o Babel! dat gij het niet wist; gij zijt gevonden, en ook gegrepen, omdat gij u tegen den HEERE in strijd gemengd hebt. 25De HEERE heeft Zijn schatkamer opengedaan, en de instrumenten Zijner gramschap voortgebracht; want dat is een werk van den HEERE, den HEERE der heirscharen, in het land der Chaldeen. 26Komt aan tegen haar van het uiterste, opent haar schuren, vertreedt haar als korenhopen, en verbant ze; laat ze geen overblijfsel hebben. 27Doodt met het zwaard al haar varren, laat ze afgaan ter slachting; wee over hen, want hun dag is gekomen, de tijd hunner bezoeking! 28Er is een stem der gevluchten en ontkomenen uit het land van Babel, om in Sion te verkondigen de wraak des HEEREN, onzes Gods, de wraak Zijns tempels. 29Laat u horen tegen Babel, gij schutters! gij allen, die den boog spant! legert u tegen haar rondom, laat niemand van hen ontkomen; vergeldt haar naar haar werk, doet haar naar alles, wat zij gedaan heeft; want zij heeft trotselijk gehandeld tegen den HEERE, tegen den Heilige Israels. 30Daarom zullen haar jongelingen vallen op haar straten, en al haar krijgslieden te dien dage uitgeroeid worden, spreekt de HEERE. 31Ziet, Ik wil aan u, gij trotse! spreekt de HEERE, de HEERE der heirscharen; want uw dag is gekomen, de tijd, dat Ik u bezoeken zal. 32Dan zal de trotse aanstoten en vallen, en er zal niemand zijn, die hem opricht; ja, Ik zal een vuur aansteken in zijn steden, dat zal alle plaatsen rondom hem verteren. 33Zo zegt de HEERE der heirscharen: De kinderen Israels en de kinderen van Juda zijn te zamen verdrukt geweest; en allen, die hen gevangen hadden, hebben hen vast gehouden; zij hebben hen geweigerd los te laten. 34Maar hun Verlosser is sterk, HEERE der heirscharen is Zijn Naam; Hij zal hun twist zekerlijk twisten, opdat Hij het land in rust brenge, maar de inwoners van Babel beroere. 35Het zwaard zal zijn over de Chaldeen, spreekt de HEERE; en over de inwoners van Babel, en over haar vorsten, en over haar wijzen. 36Het zwaard zal zijn over de leugenaars, dat zij zot worden; het zwaard zal zijn over haar helden, dat zij versagen; 37Het zwaard zal zijn over zijn paarden en over zijn wagenen, en over den gansen gemengden hoop, die in het midden van hen is, dat zij tot wijven worden; het zwaard zal zijn over haar schatten, dat zij geplunderd worden. 38Droogte zal zijn over haar wateren, dat zij uitdrogen; want het is een land van gesneden beelden, en zij razen naar de schrikkelijke afgoden. 39Daarom zo zullen de wilde dieren der woestijnen met de wilde dieren der eilanden daarin wonen; ook zullen de jonge struisen daarin wonen; en men zal er geen verblijf meer hebben in eeuwigheid, en zij zal niet bewoond worden van geslacht tot geslacht. 40Gelijk God Sodom en Gomorra en haar naburen heeft omgekeerd, spreekt de HEERE, alzo zal niemand aldaar wonen, en geen mensenkind in haar verkeren. 41Ziet, daar komt een volk uit het noorden; en een grote natie, en geweldige koningen zullen van de zijden der aarde opgewekt worden. 42Boog en spies zullen zij voeren; wreed zijn zij, en zullen niet barmhartig zijn; hun stem zal bruisen als de zee, en op paarden zullen zij rijden; het is toegerust als een man ten oorlog, tegen u, o dochter van Babel! 43De koning van Babel heeft hunlieder gerucht gehoord, en zijn handen zijn slap geworden; benauwdheid heeft hem aangegrepen, weedom als van een barende vrouw. 44Ziet, gelijk een leeuw van de verheffing der Jordaan, zal hij opkomen tegen de sterke woning; want Ik zal hen in een ogenblik daaruit doen lopen; en wie daartoe verkoren is, dien zal Ik tegen haar bestellen; want wie is Mij gelijk, en wie zou Mij dagvaarden? En wie is de herder, die voor Mijn aangezicht bestaan zou? 45Daarom hoort den raadslag des HEEREN, dien Hij over Babel heeft beraadslaagd, en Zijn gedachten, die Hij gedacht heeft over het land der Chaldeen: Zo de geringsten van de kudde hen niet zullen nedertrekken! Zo hij de woning boven hen niet zal verwoesten! 46De aarde is bevende geworden van het geluid der inneming van Babel, en het gekrijt is gehoord onder de volken.
