1La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par l’Éternel, à l’occasion de la sécheresse. 2Juda est dans le deuil, Ses villes sont désolées, tristes, abattues, Et les cris de Jérusalem s’élèvent. 3Les grands envoient les petits chercher de l’eau, Et les petits vont aux citernes, ne trouvent point d’eau, Et retournent avec leurs vases vides ; Confus et honteux, ils se couvrent la tête. 4La terre est saisie d’épouvante, Parce qu’il ne tombe point de pluie dans le pays, Et les laboureurs confus se couvrent la tête. 5Même la biche dans la campagne Met bas et abandonne sa portée, Parce qu’il n’y a point de verdure. 6Les ânes sauvages se tiennent sur les lieux élevés, Aspirant l’air comme des serpents ; Leurs yeux languissent, parce qu’il n’y a point d’herbe. 7Si nos iniquités témoignent contre nous, Agis à cause de ton nom, ô Éternel ! Car nos infidélités sont nombreuses, Nous avons péché contre toi. 8Toi qui es l’espérance d’Israël, Son sauveur au temps de la détresse, Pourquoi serais-tu comme un étranger dans le pays, Comme un voyageur qui y entre pour passer la nuit ? 9Pourquoi serais-tu comme un homme stupéfait, Comme un héros incapable de nous secourir ? Tu es pourtant au milieu de nous, ô Éternel, Et ton nom est invoqué sur nous : Ne nous abandonne pas ! 10Voici ce que l’Éternel dit de ce peuple : Ils aiment à courir çà et là, Ils ne savent retenir leurs pieds ; L’Éternel n’a point d’attachement pour eux, Il se souvient maintenant de leurs crimes, Et il châtie leurs péchés. 11Et l’Éternel me dit : N’intercède pas en faveur de ce peuple. 12S’ils jeûnent, je n’écouterai pas leurs supplications ; S’ils offrent des holocaustes et des offrandes, je ne les agréerai pas ; Car je veux les détruire par l’épée, par la famine et par la peste. 13Je répondis : Ah ! Seigneur Éternel ! Voici, les prophètes leur disent : Vous ne verrez point d’épée, Vous n’aurez point de famine ; Mais je vous donnerai dans ce lieu une paix assurée. 14Et l’Éternel me dit : C’est le mensonge que prophétisent en mon nom les prophètes ; Je ne les ai point envoyés, je ne leur ai point donné d’ordre, Je ne leur ai point parlé ; Ce sont des visions mensongères, de vaines prédictions, Des tromperies de leur cœur, qu’ils vous prophétisent. 15C’est pourquoi ainsi parle l’Éternel Sur les prophètes qui prophétisent en mon nom, Sans que je les aie envoyés, Et qui disent : Il n’y aura dans ce pays ni épée ni famine : Ces prophètes périront par l’épée et par la famine. 16Et ceux à qui ils prophétisent Seront étendus dans les rues de Jérusalem, Par la famine et par l’épée ; Il n’y aura personne pour leur donner la sépulture, Ni à eux, ni à leurs femmes, ni à leurs fils, ni à leurs filles ; Je répandrai sur eux leur méchanceté. 17Dis-leur cette parole : Les larmes coulent de mes yeux nuit et jour, Et elles ne s’arrêtent pas ; Car la vierge, fille de mon peuple, a été frappée d’un grand coup, D’une plaie très douloureuse. 18Si je vais dans les champs, voici des hommes que le glaive a percés ; Si j’entre dans la ville, voici des êtres que consume la faim ; Le prophète même et le sacrificateur parcourent le pays, Sans savoir où ils vont. 19As-tu donc rejeté Juda, Et ton âme a-t-elle pris Sion en horreur ? Pourquoi nous frappes-tu Sans qu’il y ait pour nous de guérison ? Nous espérions la paix, et il n’arrive rien d’heureux, Un temps de guérison, et voici la terreur ! 20Éternel, nous reconnaissons notre méchanceté, l’iniquité de nos pères ; Car nous avons péché contre toi. 21À cause de ton nom, ne méprise pas, Ne déshonore pas le trône de ta gloire ! N’oublie pas, ne romps pas ton alliance avec nous ! 22Parmi les idoles des nations, en est-il qui fassent pleuvoir ? Ou est-ce le ciel qui donne la pluie ? N’est-ce pas toi, Éternel, notre Dieu ? Nous espérons en toi, Car c’est toi qui as fait toutes ces choses.
1Yahweh’s word that came to Jeremiah concerning the drought. 2Judah mourns, and its gates languish, they sit in black on the ground; and the cry of Jerusalem is gone up. 3Their nobles send their little ones to the waters: they come to the cisterns, and find no water; they return with their vessels empty; they are disappointed and confounded, and cover their heads. 4Because of the ground which is cracked, because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are disappointed, they cover their heads. 5Yes, the hind also in the field calves, and forsakes her young, because there is no grass. 6The wild donkeys stand on the bare heights, they pant for air like jackals; their eyes fail, because there is no herbage. 7Though our iniquities testify against us, work for your name’s sake, Yahweh; for our rebellions are many; we have sinned against you. 8You hope of Israel, its Savior in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night? 9Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? Yet you, Yahweh, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; don’t leave us. 10Thus says Yahweh to this people, Even so have they loved to wander; they have not refrained their feet: therefore Yahweh does not accept them; now he will remember their iniquity, and visit their sins. 11Yahweh said to me, Don’t pray for this people for their good. 12When they fast, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them; but I will consume them by the sword, and by the famine, and by the pestilence. 13Then I said, Ah, Lord Yahweh! behold, the prophets tell them, You shall not see the sword, neither shall you have famine; but I will give you assured peace in this place. 14Then Yahweh said to me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name; I didn’t send them, neither have I commanded them, neither spoke I to them: they prophesy to you a lying vision, and divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart. 15Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the prophets who prophesy in my name, and I didn’t send them, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land: By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed. 16The people to whom they prophesy shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem because of the famine and the sword; and they shall have no one to bury them—them, their wives, nor their sons, nor their daughters: for I will pour their wickedness on them. 17You shall say this word to them, Let my eyes run down with tears night and day, and let them not cease; for the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound. 18If I go out into the field, then, behold, the slain with the sword! and if I enter into the city, then, behold, those who are sick with famine! for both the prophet and the priest go about in the land, and have no knowledge. 19Have you utterly rejected Judah? has your soul loathed Zion? why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold, dismay! 20We acknowledge, Yahweh, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our fathers; for we have sinned against you. 21Do not abhor us, for your name’s sake; do not disgrace the throne of your glory: remember, don’t break your covenant with us. 22Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? or can the sky give showers? Aren’t you he, Yahweh our God? therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things.
1Het woord des HEEREN, dat tot Jeremia geschied is, over de zaken der grote droogte. 2Juda treurt en haar poorten zijn verzwakt; zij zijn in het zwart gekleed ter aarde toe, en Jeruzalems geschrei klimt op. 3En hun voortreffelijken zenden hun kleinen naar water; zij komen tot de grachten, zij vinden geen water, zij komen met hun vaten ledig weder; zij zijn beschaamd, ja, worden schaamrood, en bedekken hun hoofd. 4Omdat het aardrijk gescheurd is, dewijl er geen regen op de aarde is; de akkerlieden zijn beschaamd, zij bedekken hun hoofd. 5Want ook de hinden in het veld werpen jongen, en verlaten die, omdat er geen jong gras is. 6En de woudezels staan op de hoge plaatsen, zij scheppen den wind gelijk de draken; hun ogen versmachten, omdat er geen kruid is. 7Hoewel onze ongerechtigheden tegen ons getuigen, o HEERE! doe het om Uws Naams wil; want onze afkeringen zijn menigvuldig, wij hebben tegen U gezondigd. 8O Israels Verwachting, Zijn Verlosser in tijd van benauwdheid! waarom zoudt Gij zijn als een vreemdeling in het land, en als een reiziger, die slechts inkeert om te vernachten? 9Waarom zoudt Gij zijn als een versaagd man, als een held, die niet kan verlossen? Gij zijt toch in het midden van ons, o HEERE! en wij zijn naar Uw Naam genoemd, verlaat ons niet. 10Alzo zegt de HEERE van dit volk: Zij hebben zo liefgehad te zwerven, zij hebben hun voeten niet bedwongen; daarom heeft de HEERE geen welgevallen aan hen, nu zal Hij hunner ongerechtigheden gedenken, en hun zonden bezoeken. 11Wijders zeide de HEERE tot mij: Bid niet voor dit volk ten goede. 12Ofschoon zij vasten, Ik zal naar hun geschrei niet horen, en ofschoon zij brandoffer en spijsoffer offeren, Ik zal aan hen geen welgevallen hebben; maar door het zwaard, en door den honger, en door de pestilentie zal Ik hen verteren. 13Toen zeide ik: Ach, Heere HEERE! zie, die profeten zeggen hun: Gij zult geen zwaard zien, en gij zult geen honger hebben; maar Ik zal u een gewissen vrede geven in deze plaats. 14En de HEERE zeide tot mij: Die profeten profeteren vals in Mijn Naam; Ik heb hen niet gezonden, noch hun bevel gegeven, noch tot hen gesproken; zij profeteren ulieden een vals gezicht, en waarzegging, en nietigheid, en bedriegerij huns harten. 15Daarom zegt de HEERE alzo: Aangaande de profeten, die in Mijn Naam profeteren, daar Ik hen niet gezonden heb, en zij dan nog zeggen: Er zal geen zwaard noch honger in dit land zijn; diezelve profeten zullen door het zwaard en door den honger verteerd worden. 16En het volk, tot hetwelk zij profeteren, zullen op de straten van Jeruzalem weggeworpen zijn vanwege den honger en het zwaard; en er zal niemand zijn, die hen begrave, hen, hun vrouwen, en hun zonen, en hun dochteren; alzo zal Ik hun boosheid over hen uitstorten. 17Daarom zult gij dit woord tot hen zeggen: Mijn ogen zullen van tranen nederdalen nacht en dag, en niet ophouden; want de jonkvrouw der dochter Mijns volks is gebroken met een grote breuk, een plage, die zeer smartelijk is. 18Zo ik uitga in het veld, ziet daar de verslagenen van het zwaard, en zo ik in de stad komen, ziet daar de kranken van honger! Ja, zowel de profeten als de priesters lopen om in het land, en weten niet. 19Hebt Gij dan Juda ganselijk verworpen? Heeft Uw ziel een walging aan Sion? Waarom hebt Gij ons geslagen, dat er geen genezing voor ons is? Men wacht naar vrede, maar daar is niets goeds, en naar tijd van genezing, maar ziet, daar is verschrikking. 20HEERE! wij kennen onze goddeloosheid, en onzer vaderen ongerechtigheid, want wij hebben tegen U gezondigd. 21Versmaad ons niet, om Uws Naams wil; werp den troon Uwer heerlijkheid niet neder; gedenk, vernietig niet Uw verbond met ons. 22Zijn er onder de ijdelheden der heidenen, die doen regenen, of kan de hemel druppelen geven? Zijt Gij die niet, o HEERE, onze God? Daarom zullen wij op U wachten, want Gij doet al die dingen.
