1Sédécias, fils de Josias, régna à la place de Jeconia, fils de Jojakim, et fut établi roi dans le pays de Juda par Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone. 2Ni lui, ni ses serviteurs, ni le peuple du pays, n’écoutèrent les paroles que l’Éternel prononça par Jérémie, le prophète. 3Le roi Sédécias envoya Jucal, fils de Schélémia, et Sophonie, fils de Maaséja, le sacrificateur, vers Jérémie, le prophète, pour lui dire : Intercède en notre faveur auprès de l’Éternel, notre Dieu. 4Or Jérémie allait et venait parmi le peuple ; on ne l’avait pas encore mis en prison. 5L’armée de Pharaon était sortie d’Égypte ; et les Chaldéens, qui assiégeaient Jérusalem, ayant appris cette nouvelle, s’étaient retirés de Jérusalem. 6Alors la parole de l’Éternel fut adressée à Jérémie, le prophète, en ces mots : 7Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : Vous direz au roi de Juda, qui vous a envoyés vers moi pour me consulter : Voici, l’armée de Pharaon, qui était en marche pour vous secourir, retourne dans son pays, en Égypte ; 8et les Chaldéens reviendront, ils attaqueront cette ville, ils la prendront, et la brûleront par le feu. 9Ainsi parle l’Éternel : Ne vous faites pas d’illusion, en disant : Les Chaldéens s’en iront loin de nous ! Car ils ne s’en iront pas. 10Et même quand vous battriez toute l’armée des Chaldéens qui vous font la guerre, quand il ne resterait d’eux que des hommes blessés, ils se relèveraient chacun dans sa tente, et brûleraient cette ville par le feu. 11Pendant que l’armée des Chaldéens s’était éloignée de Jérusalem, à cause de l’armée de Pharaon, 12Jérémie voulut sortir de Jérusalem, pour aller dans le pays de Benjamin et s’échapper du milieu du peuple. 13Lorsqu’il fut à la porte de Benjamin, le commandant de la garde, nommé Jireija, fils de Schélémia, fils de Hanania, se trouvait là, et il saisit Jérémie, le prophète, en disant : Tu passes aux Chaldéens ! 14Jérémie répondit : C’est faux ! je ne passe pas aux Chaldéens. Mais Jireija ne l’écouta point ; il arrêta Jérémie, et le conduisit devant les chefs. 15Les chefs, irrités contre Jérémie, le frappèrent, et le mirent en prison dans la maison de Jonathan, le secrétaire ; car ils en avaient fait une prison . 16Ce fut ainsi que Jérémie entra dans la prison et dans les cachots, où il resta longtemps. 17Le roi Sédécias l’envoya chercher, et l’interrogea secrètement dans sa maison. Il dit : Y a-t-il une parole de la part de l’Éternel ? Jérémie répondit : Oui. Et il ajouta : Tu seras livré entre les mains du roi de Babylone. 18Jérémie dit encore au roi Sédécias : En quoi ai-je péché contre toi, contre tes serviteurs, et contre ce peuple, pour que vous m’ayez mis en prison ? 19Et où sont vos prophètes qui vous prophétisaient, en disant : Le roi de Babylone ne viendra pas contre vous, ni contre ce pays ? 20Maintenant, écoute, je te prie, ô roi, mon seigneur, et que mes supplications soient favorablement reçues devant toi ! Ne me renvoie pas dans la maison de Jonathan, le secrétaire, de peur que je n’y meure ! 21Le roi Sédécias ordonna qu’on gardât Jérémie dans la cour de la prison, et qu’on lui donnât chaque jour un pain de la rue des boulangers, jusqu’à ce que tout le pain de la ville fût consommé. Ainsi Jérémie demeura dans la cour de la prison.
1Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned as king, instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, listened to Yahweh’s words, which he spoke by the prophet Jeremiah. 3Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now to Yahweh our God for us. 4Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people; for they had not put him into prison. 5Pharaoh’s army had come out of Egypt; and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard news of them, they broke up from Jerusalem. 6Then came Yahweh’s word to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, You shall tell the king of Judah, who sent you to me to inquire of me: Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which has come out to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. 8The Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city; and they shall take it, and burn it with fire. 9Thus says Yahweh, Don’t deceive yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us; for they shall not depart. 10For though you had struck the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yes would they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire. 11When the army of the Chaldeans had broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army, 12then Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to receive his portion there, in the midst of the people. 13When he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he laid hold on Jeremiah the prophet, saying, You are falling away to the Chaldeans. 14Then Jeremiah said, It is false; I am not falling away to the Chaldeans. But he didn’t listen to him; so Irijah laid hold on Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes. 15The princes were angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe; for they had made that the prison. 16When Jeremiah had come into the dungeon house, and into the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; 17Then Zedekiah the king sent, and fetched him: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from Yahweh? Jeremiah said, There is. He said also, You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18Moreover Jeremiah said to king Zedekiah, Wherein have I sinned against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? 19Where now are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20Now please hear, my lord the king: please let my supplication be presented before you, that you not cause me to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there. 21Then Zedekiah the king commanded, and they committed Jeremiah into the court of the guard; and they gave him daily a loaf of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.
1En Zedekia, zoon van Josia, regeerde, koning zijnde, in plaats van Chonja, Jojakims zoon, welken Zedekia Nebukadrezar, de koning van Babel, koning gemaakt had in het land van Juda. 2Maar hij hoorde niet, hij, noch zijn knechten, noch het volk des lands, naar de woorden des HEEREN, die Hij sprak door den dienst van den profeet Jeremia. 3Nochtans zond de koning Zedekia Juchal, den zoon van Selemja, en Sefanja, den zoon van Maaseja, den priester, tot den profeet Jeremia, om te zeggen: Bid toch voor ons tot den HEERE, onzen God! 4(Want Jeremia was nog ingaande en uitgaande in het midden des volks, en zij hadden hem nog in het gevangenhuis niet gesteld. 5En Farao's heir was uit Egypte uitgetogen; en de Chaldeen, die Jeruzalem belegerden, als zij het gerucht van hen gehoord hadden, zo waren zij van Jeruzalem opgetogen.) 6Toen geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot den profeet Jeremia, zeggende: 7Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zo zult gijlieden zeggen tot den koning van Juda, die u tot Mij gezonden heeft, om Mij te vragen: Ziet, Farao's heir, dat u ter hulpe uitgetogen is, zal wederkeren in zijn land, in Egypte; 8En de Chaldeen zullen wederkeren, en tegen deze stad strijden; en zij zullen ze innemen, en zullen ze met vuur verbranden. 9Zo zegt de HEERE: Bedriegt uw zielen niet, zeggende: De Chaldeen zullen zekerlijk van ons wegtrekken; want zij zullen niet wegtrekken. 10Want al sloegt gijlieden het ganse heir der Chaldeen, die tegen u strijden, en er bleven van hen enige verwonde mannen over, zo zouden zich die, een iegelijk in zijn tent, opmaken, en deze stad met vuur verbranden. 11Voorts geschiedde het, als het heir der Chaldeen van Jeruzalem was opgetogen, vanwege Farao's heir; 12Dat Jeremia uit Jeruzalem uitging, om te gaan in het land van Benjamin, om van daar te scheiden door het midden des volks. 13Als hij in de poort van Benjamin was, zo was daar de wachtmeester, wiens naam was Jerija, de zoon van Selemja, den zoon van Hananja; die greep den profeet Jeremia, zeggende: Gij wilt tot de Chaldeen vallen! 14En Jeremia zeide: Het is vals, ik wil niet tot de Chaldeen vallen. Doch hij hoorde niet naar hem; maar Jerija greep Jeremia aan, en bracht hem tot de vorsten. 15En de vorsten werden zeer toornig op Jeremia en sloegen hem; en zij stelden hem in het gevangenhuis, ten huize van Jonathan, den schrijver; want zij hadden dat tot een gevangenhuis gemaakt. 16Als Jeremia in de plaats des kuils, en in de kotjes gekomen was, en Jeremia aldaar veel dagen gezeten had; 17Zo zond de koning Zedekia henen, en liet hem halen; en de koning vraagde hem in zijn huis, in het verborgen, en zeide: Is er ook een woord van den HEERE? En Jeremia zeide: Er is; en hij zeide: Gij zult in de hand des konings van Babel gegeven worden. 18Voorts zeide Jeremia tot den koning Zedekia: Wat heb ik tegen u, of tegen uw knechten, of tegen dit volk gezondigd, dat gijlieden mij in het gevangenhuis gesteld hebt? 19Waar zijn nu ulieder profeten, die u geprofeteerd hebben, zeggende: De koning van Babel zal niet tegen ulieden, noch tegen dit land komen. 20Nu dan, hoor toch, o mijn heer koning! laat toch mijn smeking voor uw aangezicht nedervallen, en breng mij niet weder in het huis van Jonathan, den schrijver, opdat ik aldaar niet sterve. 21Toen gaf de koning Zedekia bevel; en zij bestelden Jeremia in het voorhof der bewaring, en men gaf hem des daags een bol broods uit de Bakkerstraat, totdat al het brood van de stad op was. Alzo bleef Jeremia in het voorhof der bewaring.
