1Or quando tutta la nazione ebbe finito di passare il Giordano (l’Eterno avea parlato a Giosuè dicendo: 2Prendete tra il popolo dodici uomini, uno per tribù, 3e date loro quest’ordine: Pigliate di qui, di mezzo al Giordano, dal luogo dove i sacerdoti sono stati a piè fermo, dodici pietre, portatele con voi di là dal fiume, e collocatele nel luogo dove accamperete stanotte), 4Giosuè chiamò i dodici uomini che avea designati tra i figliuoli d’Israele, un uomo per tribù, e disse loro: 5"Passate davanti all’arca dell’Eterno, del vostro Dio, in mezzo al Giordano, e ognun di voi tolga in ispalla una pietra, secondo il numero delle tribù dei figliuoli d’Israele, 6affinché questo sia un segno in mezzo a voi. Quando, in avvenire, i vostri figliuoli vi domanderanno: Che significan per voi queste pietre? 7Voi risponderete loro: Le acque del Giordano furon tagliate dinanzi all’arca del patto dell’Eterno; quand’essa passò il Giordano, le acque del Giordano furon tagliate, e queste pietre sono, per i figliuoli d’Israele, una ricordanza in perpetuo". 8I figliuoli d’Israele fecero dunque come Giosuè aveva ordinato; presero dodici pietre di mezzo al Giordano, come l’Eterno avea detto a Giosuè secondo il numero delle tribù de’ figliuoli d’Israele; le portarono con loro di là dal fiume nel luogo ove doveano passar la notte, e quivi le collocarono. 9Giosuè rizzò pure dodici pietre in mezzo al Giordano, nel luogo ove s’eran fermati i piedi de’ sacerdoti che portavano l’arca del patto, e vi son rimaste fino al dì d’oggi. 10I sacerdoti che portavan l’arca rimasero fermi in mezzo al Giordano finché tutto quello che l’Eterno avea comandato a Giosuè di dire al popolo fosse eseguito, conformemente agli ordini che Mosè avea dato a Giosuè. E il popolo s’affrettò a passare. 11Quando tutto il popolo ebbe finito di passare, l’arca dell’Eterno, coi sacerdoti, passò anch’essa in presenza del popolo. 12E i figliuoli di Ruben, i figliuoli di Gad e mezza la tribù di Manasse passarono in armi davanti ai figliuoli d’Israele, come Mosè avea lor detto. 13Circa quarantamila uomini, pronti di tutto punto per la guerra, passarono davanti all’Eterno nelle pianure di Gerico, per andare a combattere. 14In quel giorno, l’Eterno rese grande Giosuè agli occhi di tutto Israele; ed essi lo temettero, come avean temuto Mosè tutti i giorni della sua vita. 15Or l’Eterno parlò a Giosuè, e gli disse: 16"Ordina ai sacerdoti che portano l’arca della Testimonianza, di uscire dal Giordano". 17E Giosuè diede quest’ordine ai sacerdoti: "Uscite dal Giordano". 18E avvenne che, come i sacerdoti che portavan l’arca del patto dell’Eterno furono usciti di mezzo al Giordano e le piante de’ loro piedi si furon alzate e posate sull’asciutto, le acque del Giordano tornarono al loro posto, e strariparon da per tutto, come prima. 19Il popolo uscì dal Giordano il decimo giorno del primo mese, e s’accampò a Ghilgal, all’estremità orientale di Gerico. 20E Giosuè rizzò in Ghilgal le dodici pietre ch’essi avean prese dal Giordano. 21Poi parlò ai figliuoli d’Israele e disse loro: "Quando, in avvenire, i vostri figliuoli domanderanno ai loro padri: Che significano queste pietre? 22voi lo farete sapere ai vostri figliuoli dicendo: Israele passò questo Giordano per l’asciutto. 23Poiché l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha asciugato le acque del Giordano davanti a voi finché voi foste passati, come l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, fece al mar Rosso ch’egli asciugò finché fossimo passati, 24onde tutti i popoli della terra riconoscano che la mano dell’Eterno è potente, e voi temiate in ogni tempo l’Eterno, il vostro Dio".
1When all the nation had completely passed over the Jordan, Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying, 2“Take twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man, 3and command them, saying, ‘Take from out of the middle of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and carry them over with you, and lay them down in the lodging place, where you will lodge tonight.’” 4Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man. 5Joshua said to them, “Pass over before the ark of Yahweh your God into the middle of the Jordan, and each of you pick up a stone and put it on your shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; 6that this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do you mean by these stones?’ 7then you shall tell them, ‘Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.’” 8The children of Israel did as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the middle of the Jordan, as Yahweh spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel; and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged, and laid them down there. 9Joshua set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood; and they are there to this day. 10For the priests who bore the ark stood in the middle of the Jordan, until everything was finished that Yahweh commanded Joshua to speak to the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua; and the people hurried and passed over. 11When all the people had completely passed over, Yahweh’s ark passed over, with the priests, in the presence of the people. 12The children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spoke to them. 13About forty thousand men, ready and armed for war passed over before Yahweh to battle, to the plains of Jericho. 14On that day, Yahweh magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life. 15Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying, 16“Command the priests who bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of the Jordan.” 17Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, “Come up out of the Jordan!” 18When the priests who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh had come up out of the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up to the dry ground, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went over all its banks, as before. 19The people came up out of the Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, on the east border of Jericho. 20Joshua set up those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, in Gilgal. 21He spoke to the children of Israel, saying, “When your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 22Then you shall let your children know, saying, ‘Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. 23For Yahweh your God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you, until you had passed over, as Yahweh your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we had passed over; 24that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Yahweh, that it is mighty; that you may fear Yahweh your God forever.’”
1Het geschiedde nu, toen al het volk geeindigd had over de Jordaan te trekken, dat de HEERE tot Jozua sprak, zeggende: 2Neemt gijlieden u twaalf mannen uit het volk, uit elken stam een man. 3En gebiedt hun, zeggende: Neemt voor ulieden op, van hier uit het midden van de Jordaan, uit de standplaats van de voeten der priesteren, en bereidt twaalf stenen, en brengt ze met ulieden over, en stelt ze in het nachtleger, waar gij dezen nacht zult vernachten. 4Jozua dan riep die twaalf mannen, die hij had doen bestellen van de kinderen Israels, uit elken stam een man. 5En Jozua zeide tot hen: Gaat over voor de ark des HEEREN, uws Gods, midden in de Jordaan; en heft u een ieder een steen op zijn schouder, naar het getal der stammen van de kinderen Israels; 6Opdat dit een teken zij onder ulieden; wanneer uw kinderen morgen vragen zullen, zeggende: Wat zijn u deze stenen? 7Zo zult gij tot hen zeggen: Omdat de wateren van de Jordaan zijn afgesneden geweest voor de ark des verbonds des HEEREN; als zij toog door de Jordaan, werden de wateren van de Jordaan afgesneden; zo zullen deze stenen den kinderen Israels ter gedachtenis zijn tot in eeuwigheid. 8De kinderen Israels nu deden alzo, gelijk als Jozua geboden had; en zij namen twaalf stenen op midden uit de Jordaan, gelijk als de HEERE tot Jozua gesproken had, naar het getal der stammen van de kinderen Israels; en zij brachten ze met zich over naar het nachtleger, en stelden ze aldaar. 9Jozua richtte ook twaalf stenen op, midden in de Jordaan, ter standplaats van de voeten der priesteren, die de ark des verbonds droegen; en zij zijn daar tot op dezen dag. 10De priesters nu, die de ark droegen, stonden midden in de Jordaan, totdat alle ding volbracht was, hetwelk de HEERE Jozua geboden had het volk aan te zeggen, naar al wat Mozes Jozua geboden had. En het volk haastte, en het trok over. 11En het geschiedde, als al het volk geeindigd had over te gaan, toen ging de ark des HEEREN over, en de priesters voor het aangezicht des volks. 12En de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, mitsgaders de halve stam van Manasse, trokken gewapend voor het aangezicht der kinderen Israels, gelijk als Mozes tot hen gesproken had. 13Omtrent veertig duizend toegeruste krijgsmannen trokken er voor het aangezicht des HEEREN ten strijde, naar de vlakke velden van Jericho. 14Te dienzelven dage maakte de HEERE Jozua groot voor de ogen van het ganse Israel; en zij vreesden hem, gelijk als zij Mozes gevreesd hadden, al de dagen zijns levens. 15De HEERE dan sprak tot Jozua, zeggende: 16Gebied den priesteren, die de ark der getuigenis dragen, dat zij uit de Jordaan opklimmen. 17Toen gebood Jozua den priesteren, zeggende: Klimt op uit de Jordaan. 18En het geschiedde, toen de priesters, die de ark des verbonds des HEEREN droegen, uit het midden van de Jordaan opgeklommen waren, en de voetzolen der priesteren afgetrokken waren tot op het droge; zo keerden de wateren van de Jordaan weder in hun plaats, en gingen als gisteren en eergisteren aan al haar oevers. 19Het volk nu was den tiende der eerste maand uit de Jordaan opgeklommen; en zij legerden zich te Gilgal, aan het oosteinde van Jericho. 20En Jozua richtte die twaalf stenen te Gilgal op, die zij uit de Jordaan genomen hadden. 21En hij sprak tot de kinderen Israels, zeggende: Wanneer uw kinderen morgen hun vaderen vragen zullen, zeggende: Wat zijn deze stenen? 22Zo zult gij het uw kinderen te kennen geven, zeggende: Op het droge is Israel door deze Jordaan gegaan. 23Want de HEERE, uw God, heeft de wateren van de Jordaan voor uw aangezichten doen uitdrogen, totdat gijlieden er waart doorgegaan; gelijk als de HEERE, uw God, aan de Schelfzee gedaan heeft, die Hij voor ons aangezicht heeft doen uitdrogen, totdat wij daardoor gegaan waren; 24Opdat alle volken der aarde de hand des HEEREN kennen zouden, dat zij sterk is; opdat gijlieden den HEERE, uw God, vrezet te allen dage.
