Giosuè 23

1Or molto tempo dopo che l’Eterno ebbe dato requie a Israele liberandolo da tutti i nemici che lo circondavano, Giosuè, ormai vecchio e bene innanzi negli anni, 2convocò tutto Israele, gli anziani, i capi, i giudici e gli ufficiali del popolo, e disse loro: "Io sono vecchio e bene innanzi negli anni. 3Voi avete veduto tutto ciò che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha fatto a tutte queste nazioni, cacciandole d’innanzi a voi; poiché l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, e quegli che ha combattuto per voi. 4Ecco io ho diviso tra voi a sorte, come eredità, secondo le vostre tribù, il paese delle nazioni che restano, e di tutte quelle che ho sterminate, dal Giordano fino al mar grande, ad occidente. 5E l’Eterno, l’Iddio vostro, le disperderà egli stesso d’innanzi a voi e le scaccerà d’innanzi a voi e voi prenderete possesso del loro paese, come l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, v’ha detto. 6Applicatevi dunque risolutamente ad osservare e a mettere in pratica tutto ciò ch’è scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, senza sviarvene né a destra né a sinistra, 7senza mischiarvi con queste nazioni che rimangono fra voi; non mentovate neppure il nome de’ loro dèi, non ne fate uso nei giuramenti; non li servite, e non vi prostrate davanti a loro; 8ma tenetevi stretti all’Eterno, ch’è il vostro Dio, come avete fatto fino ad oggi. 9L’Eterno ha cacciato d’innanzi a voi nazioni grandi e potenti; e nessuno ha potuto starvi a fronte, fino ad oggi. 10Uno solo di voi ne inseguiva mille, perché l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, era quegli che combatteva per voi, com’egli vi avea detto. 11Vegliate dunque attentamente su voi stessi, per amar l’Eterno, il vostro Dio. 12Perché, se vi ritraete da lui e v’unite a quel che resta di queste nazioni che son rimaste fra voi e v’imparentate con loro e vi mescolate con esse ed esse con voi, 13siate ben certi che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, non continuerà a scacciare queste genti d’innanzi a voi, ma esse diventeranno per voi una rete, un’insidia, un flagello ai vostri fianchi, tante spine negli occhi vostri, finché non siate periti e scomparsi da questo buon paese che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, v’ha dato. 14Or ecco, io me ne vo oggi per la via di tutto il mondo; riconoscete dunque con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta l’anima vostra che neppur una di tutte le buone parole che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha pronunciate su voi e caduta a terra; tutte si son compiute per voi; neppure una e caduta a terra. 15E avverrà che, come ogni buona parola che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, vi avea detta si è compiuta per voi, così l’Eterno adempirà a vostro danno tutte le sue parole di minaccia, finché vi abbia sterminati di su questo buon paese, che il vostro Dio, l’Eterno, vi ha dato. 16Se trasgredite il patto che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, vi ha imposto, e andate a servire altri dèi e vi prostrate davanti a loro, l’ira dell’Eterno s’accenderà contro di voi, e voi perirete presto, scomparendo dal buon paese ch’egli vi ha dato".

1After many days, when Yahweh had given rest to Israel from their enemies all around, and Joshua was old and well advanced in years, 2Joshua called for all Israel, for their elders and for their heads, and for their judges and for their officers, and said to them, “I am old and well advanced in years. 3You have seen all that Yahweh your God has done to all these nations because of you; for it is Yahweh your God who has fought for you. 4Behold, I have allotted to you these nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from the Jordan, with all the nations that I have cut off, even to the great sea toward the going down of the sun. 5Yahweh your God will thrust them out from before you, and drive them from out of your sight. You shall possess their land, as Yahweh your God spoke to you. 6“Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that you not turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left; 7that you not come among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow down yourselves to them; 8but hold fast to Yahweh your God, as you have done to this day. 9“For Yahweh has driven great and strong nations out from before you. But as for you, no man has stood before you to this day. 10One man of you shall chase a thousand; for it is Yahweh your God who fights for you, as he spoke to you. 11Take good heed therefore to yourselves, that you love Yahweh your God. 12“But if you do at all go back, and hold fast to the remnant of these nations, even these who remain among you, and make marriages with them, and go in to them, and they to you; 13know for a certainty that Yahweh your God will no longer drive these nations from out of your sight; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, a scourge in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you. 14“Behold, today I am going the way of all the earth. You know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one thing has failed of all the good things which Yahweh your God spoke concerning you. All have happened to you. Not one thing has failed of it. 15It shall happen that as all the good things have come on you of which Yahweh your God spoke to you, so Yahweh will bring on you all the evil things, until he has destroyed you from off this good land which Yahweh your God has given you, 16when you disobey the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down yourselves to them. Then Yahweh’s anger will be kindled against you, and you will perish quickly from off the good land which he has given to you.”

1En het geschiedde na vele dagen, nadat de HEERE Israel rust gegeven had van al zijn vijanden rondom heen, en Jozua oud geworden en wel bedaagd was; 2Zo riep Jozua gans Israel, hun oudsten, en hun hoofden, en hun richters, en hun ambtlieden, en hij zeide tot hen: Ik ben oud geworden, en wel bedaagd; 3En gijlieden hebt gezien alles, wat de HEERE, uw God, gedaan heeft aan al deze volken voor uw aangezicht; want de HEERE, uw God, Zelf, is het, Die voor u gestreden heeft. 4Ziet, ik heb u deze overige volken door het lot doen toevallen, ten erfdeel voor uw stammen, van de Jordaan af, met al de volken, die ik uitgeroeid heb, en tot de grote zee, tegen den ondergang der zon. 5En de HEERE, uw God, Zelf zal hen uitstoten voor ulieder aangezicht, en Hij zal hen van voor ulieder aangezicht verdrijven; en gij zult hun land erfelijk bezitten, gelijk als de HEERE, uw God, tot u gesproken heeft. 6Zo weest zeer sterk, om te bewaren en om te doen alles, wat geschreven is in het wetboek van Mozes; opdat gij daarvan niet afwijkt ter rechter hand noch ter linkerhand; 7Dat gij niet ingaat tot deze volken: deze, die overgebleven zijn bij ulieden; gedenkt ook niet aan den naam hunner goden, en doet er niet bij zweren, en dient hen niet, en buigt u voor die niet; 8Maar den HEERE, uw God, zult gij aanhangen, gelijk als gij tot op dezen dag gedaan hebt. 9Want de HEERE heeft van uw aangezicht verdreven grote en machtige volken; en u aangaande, niemand heeft voor uw aangezicht bestaan, tot op dezen dag toe. 10Een enig man onder u zal er duizend jagen; want het is de HEERE, uw God, Zelf, Die voor u strijdt, gelijk al Hij tot u gesproken heeft. 11Daarom bewaart uw zielen naarstiglijk, dat gij den HEERE, uw God, liefhebt. 12Want zo gij enigszins afkeert, en het overige van deze volken aanhangt, van deze, die bij u overgebleven zijn, en u met hen verzwagert, en gij tot hen zult ingaan, en zij tot u; 13Weet voorzeker, dat de HEERE, uw God, niet voortvaren zal deze volken van voor uw aangezicht te verdrijven; maar zij zullen ulieden zijn tot een strik, en tot een net, en tot een gesel aan uw zijden, en tot doornen in uw ogen, totdat gij omkomt van dit goede land, hetwelk u de HEERE, uw God, gegeven heeft. 14En ziet, ik ga heden in den weg der ganse aarde; en gij weet in uw ganse hart en in uw ganse ziel, dat er niet een enig woord gevallen is van al die goede woorden, welke de HEERE, uw God, over u gesproken heeft; zij zijn u alle overkomen; er is van dezelve niet een enig woord gevallen. 15En het zal geschieden, gelijk als al die goede dingen over u gekomen zijn, die de HEERE, uw God, tot u gesproken heeft, alzo zal de HEERE over u komen laten al die kwade dingen, totdat Hij u verdelge van dit goede land, hetwelk u HEERE, uw God gegeven heeft. 16Wanneer gij het verbond des HEEREN, uws Gods, overtreedt, dat Hij u geboden heeft, en gij heengaat en dient andere goden, en u voor dezelve nederbuigt, zo zal de toorn des HEEREN over u ontsteken, en gij zult haastiglijk omkomen van het goede land, hetwelk Hij u gegeven heeft.
