1Allora Giosuè chiamò i Rubeniti, i Gaditi e la mezza tribù di Manasse, e disse loro: 2"Voi avete osservato tutto ciò che Mosè, servo dell’Eterno, vi aveva ordinato, e avete ubbidito alla mia voce in tutto quello che io vi ho comandato. 3Voi non avete abbandonato i vostri fratelli durante questo lungo tempo, fino ad oggi, e avete osservato come dovevate il comandamento dell’Eterno, ch’è il vostro Dio. 4E ora che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha dato requie ai vostri fratelli, come avea lor detto, ritornatevene e andatevene alle vostre tende nel paese che vi appartiene, e che Mosè, servo dell’Eterno, vi ha dato di là dal Giordano. 5Soltanto abbiate gran cura di mettere in pratica i comandamenti e la legge che Mosè, servo dell’Eterno, vi ha dato, amando l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, camminando in tutte le sue vie, osservando i suoi comandamenti, tenendovi stretti a lui, e servendolo con tutto il vostro cuore e con tutta l’anima vostra". 6Poi Giosuè li benedisse e li accomiatò; e quelli se ne tornarono alle loro tende. 7(Or Mosè avea dato a una metà della tribù di Manasse una eredità in Basan, e Giosuè dette all’altra metà un’eredità tra i loro fratelli, di qua dal Giordano, a occidente). Quando Giosuè li rimando alle loro tende e li benedisse, disse loro ancora: 8"Voi tornate alle vostre tende con grandi ricchezze, con moltissimo bestiame, con argento, oro, rame, ferro e con grandissima quantità di vestimenta; dividete coi vostri fratelli il bottino dei vostri nemici". 9I figliuoli di Ruben, i figliuoli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse dunque se ne tornarono, dopo aver lasciato i figliuoli d’Israele a Sciloh, nel paese di Canaan, per andare nel paese di Galaad, il paese di loro proprietà, del quale avean ricevuto il possesso, dietro il comandamento dato dall’Eterno per mezzo di Mosè. 10E come giunsero alla regione del Giordano che appartiene al paese di Canaan, i figliuoli di Ruben, i figliuoli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse vi costruirono un altare, presso il Giordano: un grande altare, che colpiva la vista. 11I figliuoli d’Israele udirono che si diceva: "Ecco, i figliuoli di Ruben, i figliuoli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse hanno costruito un altare di faccia al paese di Canaan, nella regione del Giordano, dal lato de’ figliuoli d’Israele". 12Quando i figliuoli d’Israele udiron questo, tutta la raunanza de’ figliuoli d’Israele si riunì a Sciloh per salire a muover loro guerra. 13E i figliuoli d’Israele mandarono ai figliuoli di Ruben, ai figliuoli di Gad e alla mezza tribù di Manasse, nel paese di Galaad, Fineas, figliuolo del sacerdote Eleazar, 14e con lui dieci principi, un principe per ciascuna casa paterna di tutte le tribù d’Israele: 15tutti eran capi di una casa paterna fra le migliaia d’Israele. E voi oggi vi ritraete dal seguire l’Eterno! 18Avverrà così che, ribellandovi voi oggi all’Eterno, domani egli si adirerà contro tutta la raunanza d’Israele. 19Se reputate impuro il paese che possedete, ebbene, passate nel paese ch’è possesso dell’Eterno, dov’è stabilito il tabernacolo dell’Eterno, e stanziatevi in mezzo a noi; ma non vi ribellate all’Eterno, e non fate di noi dei ribelli, costruendovi un altare oltre l’altare dell’Eterno, del nostro Dio. 20Acan, figliuolo di Zerah, non commise egli una infedeltà, relativamente all’interdetto, attirando l’ira dell’Eterno su tutta la raunanza d’Israele, talché quell’uomo non fu solo a perire per la sua iniquità?" 21Allora i figliuoli di Ruben, i figliuoli di Gad e la mezza tribù di Manasse risposero e dissero ai capi delle migliaia d’Israele: 22"Dio, Dio, l’Eterno, Dio, Dio, l’Eterno lo sa, e anche Israele lo saprà. Se abbiamo agito per ribellione, o per infedeltà verso l’Eterno, o Dio, non ci salvare in questo giorno! 23Se abbiam costruito un altare per ritrarci dal seguire l’Eterno; se è per offrirvi su degli olocausti o delle oblazioni o per farvi su de’ sacrifizi di azioni di grazie, l’Eterno stesso ce ne chieda conto! 24Egli sa se non l’abbiamo fatto, invece, per tema di questo: che, cioè, in avvenire, i vostri figliuoli potessero dire ai figliuoli nostri: Che avete a far voi con l’Eterno, con l’Iddio d’Israele? 25L’Eterno ha posto il Giordano come confine tra noi e voi, o figliuoli di Ruben, o figliuoli di Gad; voi non avete parte alcuna nell’Eterno! E così i vostri figliuoli farebbero cessare figliuoli nostri dal temere l’Eterno. 26Perciò abbiam detto: Mettiamo ora mano a costruirci un altare, non per olocausti né per sacrifizi, 27ma perché serva di testimonio fra noi e voi e fra i nostri discendenti dopo noi, che vogliam servire l’Eterno, nel suo cospetto, coi nostri olocausti, coi nostri sacrifizi e con le nostre offerte di azioni di grazie, affinché i vostri figliuoli non abbiano un giorno a dire ai figliuoli nostri: Voi non avete parte alcuna nell’Eterno! 28E abbiam detto: Se in avvenire essi diranno questo a noi o ai nostri discendenti, noi risponderemo: Guardate la forma dell’altare dell’Eterno che i nostri padri fecero, non per olocausti né per sacrifizi, ma perché servisse di testimonio fra noi e voi. 29Lungi da noi l’idea di ribellarci all’Eterno e di ritrarci dal seguire l’Eterno, costruendo un altare per olocausti, per oblazioni o per sacrifizi, oltre l’altare dell’Eterno, del nostro Dio, ch’è davanti al suo tabernacolo!" 30Quando il sacerdote Fineas, e i principi della raunanza, i capi delle migliaia d’Israele ch’eran con lui, ebbero udito le parole dette dai figliuoli di Ruben, dai figliuoli di Gad e dai figliuoli di Manasse, rimasero soddisfatti. 31E Fineas, figliuolo del sacerdote Eleazar, disse ai figliuoli di Ruben, ai figliuoli di Gad e ai figliuoli di Manasse: "Oggi riconosciamo che l’Eterno è in mezzo a noi, poiché non avete commesso questa infedeltà verso l’Eterno; così avete scampato i figliuoli d’Israele dalla mano dell’Eterno". 32E Fineas, figliuolo del sacerdote Eleazar, e i principi si partirono dai figliuoli di Ruben e dai figliuoli di Gad e tornarono dal paese di Galaad al paese di Canaan presso i figliuoli d’Israele, ai quali riferiron l’accaduto. 33La cosa piacque ai figliuoli d’Israele, i quali benedissero Dio, e non parlaron più di salire a muover guerra ai figliuoli di Ruben e di Gad per devastare il paese ch’essi abitavano. 34E i figliuoli di Ruben e i figliuoli di Gad diedero a quell’altare il nome di Ed perché dissero: "Esso è testimonio fra noi che l’Eterno è Dio".
1Then Joshua called the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, 2and said to them, “You have kept all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, and have listened to my voice in all that I commanded you. 3You have not left your brothers these many days to this day, but have performed the duty of the commandment of Yahweh your God. 4Now Yahweh your God has given rest to your brothers, as he spoke to them. Therefore now return and go to your tents, to the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan. 5Only take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.” 6So Joshua blessed them, and sent them away; and they went to their tents. 7Now to the one half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given inheritance in Bashan; but to the other half gave Joshua among their brothers beyond the Jordan westward. Moreover when Joshua sent them away to their tents, he blessed them, 8and spoke to them, saying, “Return with much wealth to your tents, with very much livestock, with silver, with gold, with brass, with iron, and with very much clothing. Divide the plunder of your enemies with your brothers.” 9The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead, to the land of their possession, which they owned, according to the commandment of Yahweh by Moses. 10When they came to the region about the Jordan, that is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh built there an altar by the Jordan, a great altar to look at. 11The children of Israel heard this, “Behold, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar in the forefront of the land of Canaan, in the region about the Jordan, on the side that pertains to the children of Israel.” 12When the children of Israel heard of it, the whole congregation of the children of Israel gathered themselves together at Shiloh, to go up against them to war. 13The children of Israel sent to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, 14and with him ten princes, one prince of a fathers’ house for each of the tribes of Israel; and they were everyone of them head of their fathers’ houses among the thousands of Israel. 15They came to the children of Reuben, and to the children of Gad, and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, to the land of Gilead, and they spoke with them, saying, 16“Thus says the whole congregation of Yahweh, ‘What trespass is this that you have committed against the God of Israel, to turn away this day from following Yahweh, in that you have built yourselves an altar, to rebel this day against Yahweh? 17Is the iniquity of Peor too little for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there came a plague on the congregation of Yahweh, 18that you must turn away this day from following Yahweh? It will be, since you rebel today against Yahweh, that tomorrow he will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel. 19However, if the land of your possession is unclean, then pass over to the land of the possession of Yahweh, in which Yahweh’s tabernacle dwells, and take possession among us; but don’t rebel against Yahweh, nor rebel against us, in building an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God. 20Didn’t Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the devoted thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? That man didn’t perish alone in his iniquity.’” 21Then the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, and spoke to the heads of the thousands of Israel, 22“The Mighty One, God, Yahweh, the Mighty One, God, Yahweh, he knows; and Israel shall know: if it was in rebellion, or if in trespass against Yahweh (don’t save us this day), 23that we have built us an altar to turn away from following Yahweh; or if to offer burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings, let Yahweh himself require it. 24“If we have not out of concern done this, and for a reason, saying, ‘In time to come your children might speak to our children, saying, “What have you to do with Yahweh, the God of Israel? 25For Yahweh has made the Jordan a border between us and you, you children of Reuben and children of Gad. You have no portion in Yahweh.”’ So your children might make our children cease from fearing Yahweh. 26“Therefore we said, ‘Let’s now prepare to build ourselves an altar, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; 27but it will be a witness between us and you, and between our generations after us, that we may perform the service of Yahweh before him with our burnt offerings, with our sacrifices, and with our peace offerings;’ that your children may not tell our children in time to come, ‘You have no portion in Yahweh.’ 28“Therefore we said, ‘It shall be, when they tell us or our generations this in time to come, that we shall say, “Behold the pattern of the altar of Yahweh, which our fathers made, not for burnt offering, nor for sacrifice; but it is a witness between us and you.”’ 29“Far be it from us that we should rebel against Yahweh, and turn away this day from following Yahweh, to build an altar for burnt offering, for meal offering, or for sacrifice, besides the altar of Yahweh our God that is before his tabernacle!” 30When Phinehas the priest, and the princes of the congregation, even the heads of the thousands of Israel that were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them well. 31Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, to the children of Gad, and to the children of Manasseh, “Today we know that Yahweh is in the midst of us, because you have not committed this trespass against Yahweh. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of Yahweh.” 32Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of Reuben, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gilead, to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again. 33The thing pleased the children of Israel; and the children of Israel blessed God, and spoke no more of going up against them to war, to destroy the land in which the children of Reuben and the children of Gad lived. 34The children of Reuben and the children of Gad named the altar “A Witness Between Us that Yahweh is God.”
1Toen riep Jozua de Rubenieten, en de Gadieten, en den halven stam van Manasse, 2En hij zeide tot hen: Gijlieden hebt onderhouden alles, wat u Mozes, de knecht des HEEREN, geboden heeft; en gij zijt mijner stem gehoorzaam geweest in alles, wat ik u geboden heb. 3Gij hebt uw broederen niet verlaten nu langen tijd, tot op dezen dag toe; maar gij hebt waargenomen de onderhouding der geboden van den HEERE, uw God. 4En nu, de HEERE, uw God, heeft uw broederen rust gegeven, gelijk Hij hun toegezegd had; keert dan nu wederom, en gaat gij naar uw tenten, naar het land uwer bezitting, hetwelk u Mozes, de knecht des HEEREN, gegeven heeft op gene zijde van de Jordaan. 5Alleenlijk neemt naarstiglijk waar te doen het gebod en de wet, die u Mozes, de knecht des HEEREN, geboden heeft, dat gij den HEERE, uw God, liefhebt, en dat gij wandelt in al Zijn wegen, en Zijn geboden houdt, en Hem aanhangt, en dat gij Hem dient met uw ganse hart en met uw ganse ziel. 6Alzo zegende hen Jozua, en hij liet hen gaan; en zij gingen naar hun tenten. 7Want aan de helft van den stam van Manasse had Mozes een erfdeel gegeven in Bazan; maar aan de andere helft van denzelven gaf Jozua een erfdeel bij hun broederen, aan deze zijde van de Jordaan westwaarts. Verder ook als Jozua hen liet trekken naar hun tenten, zo zegende hij hen. 8En hij sprak tot hen, zeggende: Keert weder tot uw tenten met veel rijkdom, en met zeer veel vee, met zilver, en met goud, en met koper, en met ijzer, en met zeer veel klederen; deelt den roof uwer vijanden met uw broederen. 9Alzo keerden de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, en de halve stam van Manasse wederom, en togen van de kinderen Israels, van Silo, dat in het land Kanaan is, om te gaan naar het land van Gilead, naar het land hunner bezitting, in hetwelk zij bezitters gemaakt waren, naar den mond des HEEREN, door den dienst van Mozes. 10Toen zij kwamen aan de grenzen van de Jordaan, die in het land Kanaan zijn, zo bouwden de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, en de halve stam van Manasse aldaar een altaar aan de Jordaan, een altaar groot in het aanzien. 11En de kinderen Israels hoorden zeggen: Ziet, de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, en de halve stam van Manasse hebben een altaar gebouwd, tegenover het land Kanaan, aan de grenzen van de Jordaan, aan de zijde der kinderen Israels. 12Als de kinderen Israels dit hoorden, zo verzamelde de ganse vergadering der kinderen Israels te Silo, dat zij tegen hen optogen met een heir. 13En de kinderen Israels zonden aan de kinderen van Ruben, en aan de kinderen van Gad, en aan den halven stam van Manasse, in het land Gilead, Pinehas, den zoon van Eleazar, den priester; 14En tien vorsten met hem, van ieder vaderlijk huis een vorst, uit al de stammen van Israel; en zij waren een ieder een hoofd van het huis hunner vaderen over de duizenden van Israel. 15Toen zij tot de kinderen van Ruben, en tot de kinderen van Gad, en tot den halven stam van Manasse kwamen, in het land Gilead, zo spraken zij met hen, zeggende: 16Alzo spreekt de ganse gemeente des HEEREN: Wat overtreding is dit, waarmede gijlieden overtreden hebt tegen den God van Israel, heden afkerende van achter den HEERE, mits dat gij een altaar voor u gebouwd hebt, om heden tegen den HEERE wederspannig te zijn? 17Is ons de ongerechtigheid van Peor te weinig, van dewelke wij niet gereinigd zijn tot op dezen dag, hoewel de plaag in de vergadering des HEEREN geweest is? 18Dewijl gij u heden van achter den HEERE afkeert, het zal dan geschieden, als gij heden wederspannig zijt tegen den HEERE, zo zal Hij Zich morgen grotelijks vertoornen tegen de ganse gemeente van Israel. 19Maar toch, indien het land uwer bezitting onrein is, komt over in het land van de bezitting des HEEREN, waar de tabernakel des HEEREN woont, en neemt bezitting in het midden van ons; maar zijt niet wederspannig tegen den HEERE, en zijt ook niet wederspannig tegen ons, een altaar voor u bouwende, behalve het altaar van den HEERE, onzen God. 20Heeft niet Achan, de zoon van Zerah, overtreding begaan met het verbannene, en kwam er niet een verbolgenheid over de ganse vergadering van Israel? En die man stierf niet alleen in zijn ongerechtigheid. 21Toen antwoordden de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, en de halve stam van Manasse, en zij spraken met de hoofden der duizenden van Israel: 22De God der goden, de HEERE, de God der goden, de HEERE, Die weet het; Israel zelf zal het ook weten! Is het door wederspannigheid, of is het door overtreding tegen den HEERE, zo behoudt ons heden niet; 23Dat wij ons een altaar zouden gebouwd hebben, om ons van achter den HEERE af te keren, of om brandoffer en spijsoffer daarop te offeren, of om dankoffer daarop te doen, zo eise het de HEERE. 24En zo wij dit niet uit zorg vanwege deze zaak gedaan hebben, zeggende: Morgen mochten uw kinderen tot onze kinderen spreken, zeggende: Wat hebt gij met den HEERE, den God van Israel, te doen? 25De HEERE heeft immers de Jordaan tot landpale gezet tussen ulieden, gij, kinderen van Ruben, en gij, kinderen van Gad! gij hebt geen deel aan den HEERE. Zo mochten uw kinderen onze kinderen doen ophouden, dat zij den HEERE niet vreesden. 26Daarom zeiden wij: Laat ons toch voor ons maken, bouwende een altaar, niet ten brandoffer, noch ten offer. 27Maar dat het een getuige zij tussen ons en tussen ulieden, en tussen onze geslachten na ons, opdat wij den dienst des HEEREN voor Zijn aangezicht dienen mochten met onze brandofferen, en met onze slachtofferen, en met onze dankofferen; en dat uw kinderen tot onze kinderen morgen niet zeggen: Gijlieden hebt geen deel aan den HEERE. 28Daarom zeiden wij: Wanneer het geschiedt, dat zij morgen alzo tot ons en tot onze geslachten zeggen zullen; zo zullen wij zeggen: Ziet de gedaante van het altaar des HEEREN, hetwelk onze vaderen gemaakt hebben, niet ten brandoffer, noch ten offer; maar het is een getuige tussen ons en tussen ulieden. 29Het zij verre van ons, van ons dat wij zouden wederspannig zijn tegen den HEERE, of dat wij te dezen dage ons van achter den HEERE afkeren zouden, bouwende een altaar ten brandoffer, ten spijsoffer, of ten slachtoffer, behalve het altaar van den HEERE, onzen God, dat voor Zijn tabernakel is. 30Toen de priester Pinehas, en de oversten der vergadering, en de hoofden der duizenden van Israel, die bij hem waren, de woorden hoorden, die de kinderen van Ruben, en de kinderen van Gad, en de kinderen van Manasse gesproken hadden, zo was het goed in hun ogen. 31En Pinehas, de zoon van den priester Eleazar, zeide tot de kinderen van Ruben, en tot de kinderen van Gad, en tot de kinderen van Manasse: Heden weten wij, dat de HEERE in het midden van ons is, dewijl gij deze overtreding tegen den HEERE niet begaan hebt; toen hebt gijlieden de kinderen Israel verlost uit de hand des HEEREN. 32En Pinehas, de zoon van den priester Eleazar, keerde wederom met de oversten van de kinderen van Ruben, en van de kinderen van Gad, uit het land Gilead, naar het land Kanaan, tot de kinderen Israel; en zij brachten hun antwoord weder; 33Het antwoord nu was goed in de ogen van de kinderen Israels, en de kinderen Israels loofden God, en zeiden niet meer van tegen hen op te trekken met een heir, om het land te verderven, waarin de kinderen van Ruben en de kinderen van Gad woonden. 34En de kinderen van Ruben en de kinderen van Gad noemden dat altaar: Dat het een getuige zij tussen ons, dat de HEERE God is.
