1Or Gerico era ben chiusa e barricata per paura de’ figliuoli d’Israele; nessuno ne usciva e nessuno v’entrava. 2E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: "Vedi, io do in tua mano Gerico, il suo re, i suoi prodi guerrieri. 3Voi tutti dunque, uomini di guerra, circuite la città, facendone il giro una volta. Così farai per sei giorni; 4e sette sacerdoti porteranno davanti all’arca sette trombe squillanti; il settimo giorno farete il giro della città sette volte, e i sacerdoti soneranno le trombe. 5E avverrà, che quand’essi soneranno a distesa il corno squillante e voi udrete il suono delle trombe, tutto il popolo darà in un gran grido, e le mura della città crolleranno, e il popolo salirà, ciascuno diritto dinanzi a sé". 6Allora Giosuè, figliuolo di Nun, chiamò i sacerdoti e disse loro: "Prendete l’arca del patto, e sette sacerdoti portino sette trombe squillanti davanti all’arca dell’Eterno". 7Poi disse al popolo: "Andate, fate il giro della città, e l’avanguardia preceda l’arca dell’Eterno". 8Quando Giosuè ebbe parlato al popolo, i sette sacerdoti che portavano le sette trombe squillanti davanti all’Eterno, si misero in marcia sonando le trombe; e l’arca del patto dell’Eterno teneva loro dietro. 9E l’avanguardia marciava davanti ai sacerdoti che sonavan le trombe, e la retroguardia seguiva l’arca; durante la marcia, i sacerdoti sonavan le trombe. 10Or Giosuè avea dato al popolo quest’ordine: "Non gridate, fate che non s’oda la vostra voce e non v’esca parola di bocca, fino al giorno ch’io vi dirò: Gridate! allora griderete". 11Così fece fare all’arca dell’Eterno il giro della città una volta; poi rientrarono nel campo, e quivi passarono la notte. 12Giosuè si levò la mattina di buon’ora, e i sacerdoti presero l’arca dell’Eterno. 13I sette sacerdoti che portavano le sette trombe squillanti davanti all’arca dell’Eterno s’avanzavano, sonando le trombe durante la marcia. Il popolo salì nella città, ciascuno diritto davanti a sé, e s’impadronirono della città. 21E votarono allo sterminio tutto ciò che era nella città, passando a fil di spada, uomini, donne, fanciulli e vecchi, e buoi e pecore e asini. 22E Giosuè disse ai due uomini che aveano esplorato il paese: "Andate in casa di quella meretrice, menatela fuori con tutto ciò che le appartiene, come glielo avete giurato". 23E que’ giovani che aveano esplorato il paese entrarono nella casa, e ne fecero uscire Rahab, suo padre, sua madre, i suoi fratelli e tutto quello che le apparteneva; ne fecero uscire anche tutte le famiglie de’ suoi, e li collocarono fuori del campo d’Israele. 24Poi i figliuoli d’Israele diedero fuoco alla città e a tutto quello che conteneva; presero soltanto l’argento, l’oro e gli oggetti di rame e di ferro, che misero nel tesoro della casa dell’Eterno. 25Ma a Rahab, la meretrice, alla famiglia di suo padre e a tutti i suoi Giosuè lasciò la vita; ed ella ha dimorato in mezzo ad Israele fino al dì d’oggi, perché avea nascosto i messi che Giosuè avea mandati ad esplorar Gerico. 26Allora Giosuè fece questo giuramento: "Sia maledetto, nel cospetto dell’Eterno, l’uomo che si leverà a riedificare questa città di Gerico! Ei ne getterà le fondamenta sul suo primogenito, e ne rizzerà le porte sul più giovane de’ suoi figliuoli". 27L’Eterno fu con Giosuè, e la fama di lui si sparse per tutto il paese.
1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the children of Israel. No one went out, and no one came in. 2Yahweh said to Joshua, “Behold, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and the mighty men of valor. 3All your men of war shall march around the city, going around the city once. You shall do this six days. 4Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. 5It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him.” 6Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh’s ark.” 7They said to the people, “Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh’s ark.” 8It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh advanced, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them. 9The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went. 10Joshua commanded the people, saying, “You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.” 11So he caused Yahweh’s ark to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp. 12Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up Yahweh’s ark. 13The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams’ horns before Yahweh’s ark went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after Yahweh’s ark. The trumpets sounded as they went. 14The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days. 15On the seventh day, they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times. 16At the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, “Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city! 17The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent. 18But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it. 19But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to Yahweh. They shall come into Yahweh’s treasury.” 20So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. When the people heard the sound of the trumpet, the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. 21They utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, both young and old, and ox, and sheep, and donkey, with the edge of the sword. 22Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house, and bring out from there the woman and all that she has, as you swore to her.” 23The young men who were spies went in, and brought out Rahab with her father, her mother, her brothers, and all that she had. They also brought out all her relatives, and they set them outside of the camp of Israel. 24They burnt the city with fire, and all that was in it. Only they put the silver, the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron into the treasury of Yahweh’s house. 25But Rahab the prostitute, her father’s household, and all that she had, Joshua saved alive. She lived in the midst of Israel to this day, because she hid the messengers, whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho. 26Joshua commanded them with an oath at that time, saying, “Cursed is the man before Yahweh, who rises up and builds this city Jericho. With the loss of his firstborn shall he lay its foundation, and with the loss of his youngest son shall he set up its gates.” 27So Yahweh was with Joshua; and his fame was in all the land.

Alzo deden zij zes dagen lang. 15En het geschiedde op den zevenden dag, dat zij zich vroeg opmaakten, met het opgaan des dageraads, en zij gingen rondom de stad, naar dezelve wijze, zevenmaal; alleenlijk op dien dag gingen zij zevenmaal rondom de stad. 16En het geschiedde ten zevenden male, als de priesters met de bazuinen bliezen, dat Jozua tot het volk sprak: Juicht, want de HEERE heeft ulieden de stad gegeven! 17Doch deze stad zal den HEERE verbannen zijn, zij en al wat daarin is; alleenlijk zal de hoer Rachab levend blijven, zij en allen, die met haar in het huis zijn, omdat zij de boden, die wij uitgezonden hadden, verborgen heeft. 18Alleenlijk dat gijlieden u wacht van het verbannene, opdat gij u misschien niet verbant, mits nemende van het verbannene, en het leger van Israel niet stelt tot een ban, noch datzelve beroert. 19Maar al het zilver en goud, en de koperen en ijzeren vaten, zullen den HEERE heilig zijn; tot den schat des HEEREN zullen zij komen. 20Het volk dan juichte, als zij met de bazuinen bliezen; en het geschiedde, als het volk het geluid der bazuin hoorde, zo juichte het volk met een groot gejuich; en de muur viel onder zich, en het volk klom in de stad, een ieder tegenover zich, en zij namen de stad in. 21En zij verbanden alles, wat in de stad was, van den man tot de vrouw toe, van het kind tot den oude, en tot den os, en het klein vee, en den ezel, door de scherpte des zwaards. 22Jozua nu zeide tot de twee mannen, de verspieders des lands: Gaat in het huis der vrouw, der hoer, en brengt die vrouw van daar uit, met al wat zij heeft, gelijk als gij haar gezworen hebt. 23Toen gingen de jongelingen, de verspieders, daarin en brachten er Rachab uit, en haar vader, en haar moeder, en haar broeders, en al wat zij had; ook brachten zij uit al haar huisgezinnen, en zij stelden hen buiten het leger van Israel. 24De stad nu verbrandden zij met vuur, en al wat daarin was; alleenlijk het zilver en goud, mitsgaders de koperen en ijzeren vaten, gaven zij tot den schat van het huis des HEEREN. 25Dus liet Jozua de hoer Rachab leven, en het huisgezin haars vaders, en al wat zij had; en zij heeft gewoond in het midden van Israel tot op dezen dag, omdat zij de boden verborgen had, die Jozua gezonden had, om Jericho te verspieden. 26En ter zelver tijd bezwoer hen Jozua, zeggende: Vervloekt zij die man voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, die zich opmaken en deze stad Jericho bouwen zal; dat hij ze grondveste op zijn eerstgeborenen zoon, en haar poorten stelle op zijn jongsten zoon! 27Alzo was de HEERE met Jozua; en zijn gerucht liep door het ganse land.
