1E Giosuè si levò la mattina di buon’ora e con tutti i figliuoli d’Israele partì da Sittim. Essi arrivarono al Giordano, e quivi fecero alto prima di passarlo. 2In capo a tre giorni, gli ufficiali percorsero il campo, 3e dettero quest’ordine al popolo: "Quando vedrete l’arca del patto dell’Eterno, ch’è il vostro Dio, portata dai sacerdoti levitici, partirete dal luogo ove siete accampati, e andrete dietro ad essa. 4Però, vi sarà tra voi e l’arca la distanza d’un tratto di circa duemila cubiti; non v’accostate ad essa, affinché possiate veder bene la via per la quale dovete andare; poiché non siete ancora mai passati per questa via". 5E Giosuè disse al popolo: "Santificatevi, poiché domani l’Eterno farà delle maraviglie in mezzo a voi". 6Poi Giosuè parlò ai sacerdoti, dicendo: "Prendete in ispalla l’arca del patto e passate davanti al popolo". Ed essi presero in ispalla l’arca del patto e camminarono davanti al popolo. 7E l’Eterno disse a Giosuè: "Oggi comincerò a renderti grande agli occhi di tutto Israele, affinché riconoscano che, come fui con Mosè, così sarò con te. 8E tu dà ai sacerdoti che portano l’arca del patto, quest’ordine: Quando sarete giunti alla riva delle acque del Giordano, vi fermerete nel Giordano". 9E Giosuè disse ai figliuoli d’Israele: "Fatevi dappresso e ascoltate le parole dell’Eterno, del vostro Dio". 10Poi Giosuè disse: "Da questo riconoscerete che l’Iddio vivente è in mezzo a voi, e ch’egli caccerà certamente d’innanzi a voi i Cananei, gli Hittei, gli Hivvei, i Ferezei, i Ghirgasei, gli Amorei e i Gebusei: 11ecco, l’arca del patto del Signore di tutta la terra sta per passare davanti a voi per entrar nel Giordano. 12Or dunque prendete dodici uomini fra le tribù d’Israele, uno per tribù. 13E avverrà che, non appena i sacerdoti recanti l’arca dell’Eterno, del Signor di tutta la terra, avran posato le piante de’ piedi nelle acque del Giordano, le acque del Giordano, che scendono d’insù, saranno tagliate, e si fermeranno in un mucchio". 14E avvenne che quando il popolo fu uscito dalle sue tende per passare il Giordano, avendo dinanzi a lui i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca del patto, 15appena quelli che portavan l’arca giunsero al Giordano e i sacerdoti che portavan l’arca ebber tuffati i piedi nell’acqua della riva (il Giordano straripa da per tutto durante tutto il tempo della mèsse), 16le acque che scendevano d’insù si fermarono e si elevarono in un mucchio, a una grandissima distanza, fin presso la città di Adam che è allato di Tsartan; e quelle che scendevano verso il mare della pianura, il mar Salato, furono interamente separate da esse; e il popolo passò dirimpetto a Gerico. 17E i sacerdoti che portavano l’arca del patto dell’Eterno stettero a piè fermo sull’asciutto, in mezzo al Giordano, mentre tutto Israele passava per l’asciutto, finché tutta la nazione ebbe finito di passare il Giordano.
1Joshua rose up early in the morning; and they moved from Shittim, and came to the Jordan, he and all the children of Israel. They lodged there before they passed over. 2After three days, the officers went through the midst of the camp; 3and they commanded the people, saying, “When you see the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, and the priests the Levites bearing it, then you shall move from your place, and follow it. 4Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Don’t come near to it, that you may know the way by which you must go; for you have not passed this way before.” 5Joshua said to the people, “Sanctify yourselves; for tomorrow Yahweh will do wonders among you.” 6Joshua spoke to the priests, saying, “Take up the ark of the covenant, and pass over before the people.” They took up the ark of the covenant, and went before the people. 7Yahweh said to Joshua, “Today I will begin to magnify you in the sight of all Israel, that they may know that as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. 8You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, saying, ‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’” 9Joshua said to the children of Israel, “Come here, and hear the words of Yahweh your God.” 10Joshua said, “Hereby you shall know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Hivite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Jebusite out from before you. 11Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth passes over before you into the Jordan. 12Now therefore take twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, for every tribe a man. 13It shall come to pass, when the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of Yahweh, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, that the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, even the waters that come down from above; and they shall stand in one heap.” 14When the people moved from their tents to pass over the Jordan, the priests who bore the ark of the covenant being before the people, 15and when those who bore the ark had come to the Jordan, and the feet of the priests who bore the ark had dipped in the edge of the water (for the Jordan overflows all its banks all the time of harvest), 16the waters which came down from above stood, and rose up in one heap, a great way off, at Adam, the city that is beside Zarethan; and those that went down toward the sea of the Arabah, even the Salt Sea, were wholly cut off. Then the people passed over right against Jericho. 17The priests who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan; and all Israel passed over on dry ground, until all the nation had passed completely over the Jordan.

Zij dan namen de ark des verbonds op, en zij gingen voor het aangezicht des volks. 7Want de HEERE had tot Jozua gezegd: Dezen dag zal Ik beginnen u groot te maken voor de ogen van gans Israel, opdat zij weten, dat Ik met u zijn zal, gelijk als Ik met Mozes geweest ben. 8Gij dan zult den priesteren, die de ark des verbonds dragen, gebieden, zeggende: Wanneer gijlieden komt tot aan het uiterste van het water van de Jordaan, staat stil in de Jordaan. 9Toen zeide Jozua tot de kinderen Israels: Nadert herwaarts, en hoort de woorden des HEEREN, uws Gods. 10Verder zeide Jozua: Hieraan zult gijlieden bekennen, dat de levende God in het midden van u is, en dat Hij ganselijk voor uw aangezicht uitdrijven zal de Kanaanieten, en de Hethieten, en de Hevieten, en de Ferezieten, en de Girgazieten, en de Amorieten en de Jebusieten. 11Ziet, de ark des verbonds van den Heere der ganse aarde gaat door voor ulieder aangezicht in de Jordaan. 12Nu dan, neemt gijlieden u twaalf mannen uit de stammen Israels, uit iederen stam een man; 13Want het zal geschieden, met dat de voetzolen der priesteren, die de ark van den HEERE, den Heere der ganse aarde, dragen, in het water van de Jordaan zullen rusten, zo zullen de wateren van de Jordaan afgesneden worden, te weten de wateren, die van boven afvlieten, en zij zullen op een hoop blijven staan. 14En het geschiedde, toen het volk vertrok uit zijn tenten, om over de Jordaan te gaan, zo droegen de priesters de ark des verbonds voor het aangezicht des volks. 15En als zij, die de ark droegen, tot aan de Jordaan gekomen waren, en de voeten der priesteren, dragende de ark, ingedoopt waren in het uiterste van het water (de Jordaan nu was vol al de dagen des oogstes aan al haar oevers); 16Zo stonden de wateren, die van boven afkwamen; zij rezen op een hoop, zeer verre van de stad Adam af, die ter zijde van Sarthan ligt en die naar de zee des vlakken velds, te weten de Zoutzee, afliepen, vergingen, zij werden afgesneden.
