1Giosia aveva otto anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme. 2Egli fece ciò ch’è giusto agli occhi dell’Eterno, e camminò per le vie di Davide suo padre senza scostarsene né a destra né a sinistra. 3L’ottavo anno del suo regno, mentre era ancora giovinetto, cominciò a cercare l’Iddio di Davide suo padre; e il dodicesimo anno cominciò a purificare Giuda e Gerusalemme dagli alti luoghi, dagl’idoli d’Astarte, dalle immagini scolpite e dalle immagini fuse. 4E in sua presenza furon demoliti gli altari de’ Baali e abbattute le colonne solari che v’eran sopra; e frantumò gl’idoli d’Astarte, le immagini scolpite e le statue; e le ridusse in polvere, che sparse sui sepolcri di quelli che aveano offerto loro de’ sacrifizi; 5e bruciò le ossa dei sacerdoti sui loro altari, e così purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme. 6Lo stesso fece nelle città di Manasse, d’Efraim, di Simeone, e fino a Neftali: da per tutto, in mezzo alle loro rovine, 7demolì gli altari, frantumò e ridusse in polvere gl’idoli d’Astarte e le immagini scolpite, abbatté tutte le colonne solari in tutto il paese d’Israele, e tornò a Gerusalemme. 8L’anno diciottesimo del suo regno, dopo aver purificato il paese e la casa dell’Eterno, mandò Shafan, figliuolo di Atsalia, Maaseia, governatore della città, e Joah, figliuolo di Joachaz, l’archivista, per restaurare la casa dell’Eterno, del suo Dio. 9E quelli si recarono dal sommo sacerdote Hilkia, e fu loro consegnato il danaro ch’era stato portato nella casa di Dio, e che i Leviti custodi della soglia aveano raccolto in Manasse, in Efraim, in tutto il rimanente d’Israele, in tutto Giuda e Beniamino, e fra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme. 10Ed essi lo rimisero nelle mani dei direttori preposti ai lavori della casa dell’Eterno, e i direttori lo dettero a quelli che lavoravano nella casa dell’Eterno per ripararla e restaurarla. 11Lo dettero ai legnaiuoli ed ai costruttori, per comprar delle pietre da tagliare, e del legname per l’armatura e la travatura delle case che i re di Giuda aveano distrutte. 12E quegli uomini facevano il loro lavoro con fedeltà; ed ad essi eran preposti Jahath e Obadia, Leviti di tra i figliuoli di Merari, e Zaccaria e Meshullam di tra i figliuoli di Kehath, per la direzione, e tutti quelli tra i Leviti ch’erano abili a sonare strumenti musicali. 13Questi sorvegliavan pure i portatori di pesi, e dirigevano tutti gli operai occupati nei diversi lavori; e fra i Leviti addetti a que’ lavori ve n’eran di quelli ch’erano segretari, commissari, portinai. 14Or mentre si traeva fuori il danaro ch’era stato portato nella casa dell’Eterno, il sacerdote Hilkia trovò il libro della Legge dell’Eterno, data per mezzo di Mosè. 15E Hilkia parlò a Shafan, il segretario, e gli disse: "Ho trovato nella casa dell’Eterno il libro della legge". E Shafan lo lesse in presenza del re. 19Quando il re ebbe udite le parole della legge, si stracciò le vesti. 20Poi il re diede quest’ordine a Hilkia, ad Ahikam, figliuolo di Shafan, ad Abdon, figliuolo di Mica, a Shafan il segretario, e ad Asaia, servo del re: 21"Andate a consultare l’Eterno per me e per ciò che rimane d’Israele e di Giuda, riguardo alle parole di questo libro che s’è trovato; giacché grande e l’ira dell’Eterno che s’è riversata su noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno osservata la parola dell’Eterno, e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello ch’è scritto in questo libro". 22Hilkia e quelli che il re avea designati andarono dalla profetessa Hulda, moglie di Shallum, figliuolo di Tokhath, figliuolo di Hasra, il guardaroba. Essa dimorava a Gerusalemme, nel secondo quartiere; e quelli le parlarono nel senso indicato dal re. 23Ed ella disse loro: "Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati da me: 24Così dice l’Eterno: Ecco, io farò venire delle sciagure su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti, farò venire tutte le maledizioni che sono scritte nel libro, ch’è stato letto in presenza del re di Giuda. 25Poiché essi m’hanno abbandonato ed hanno offerto profumi ad altri dèi per provocarmi ad ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani, la mia ira s’è riversata su questo luogo, e non si estinguerà. 26Quanto al re di Giuda che v’ha mandati a consultare l’Eterno, gli direte questo: Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele, riguardo alle parole che tu hai udite: 27Giacché il tuo cuore è stato toccato, giacché ti sei umiliato dinanzi a Dio, udendo le sue parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, giacché ti sei umiliato dinanzi a me e ti sei stracciate le vesti e ai pianto dinanzi a me, anch’io t’ho ascoltato, dice l’Eterno. 28Ecco, io ti riunirò coi tuoi padri, e sarai raccolto in pace nel tuo sepolcro; e gli occhi tuoi non vedranno tutte le sciagure ch’io farò venire su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti". E quelli riferirono al re la risposta. 29Allora il re mandò a far raunare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme. 30E il re salì alla casa dell’Eterno con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e tutto il popolo, grandi e piccoli, e lesse in loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, ch’era stato trovato nella casa dell’Eterno. 31Il re, stando in piedi sul palco, fece un patto dinanzi all’Eterno, impegnandosi di seguire l’Eterno, d’osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e le sue leggi con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, per mettere in pratica le parole del patto scritte in quel libro. 32E fece aderire al patto tutti quelli che si trovavano a Gerusalemme e in Beniamino; e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si conformarono al patto di Dio, dell’Iddio de’ loro padri. 33E Giosia fece sparire tutte le abominazioni da tutti i paesi che appartenevano ai figliuoli d’Israele, e impose a tutti quelli che si trovavano in Israele, di servire all’Eterno, al loro Dio. Durante tutto il tempo della vita di Giosia essi non cessarono di seguire l’Eterno, l’Iddio dei loro padri.
1Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign; and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. 2He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, and walked in the ways of David his father, and didn’t turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 3For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father; and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the Asherah poles, and the engraved images, and the molten images. 4They broke down the altars of the Baals in his presence; and the incense altars that were on high above them he cut down; and the Asherah poles, and the engraved images, and the molten images, he broke in pieces, and made dust of them, and strewed it on the graves of those who had sacrificed to them. 5He burnt the bones of the priests on their altars, and purged Judah and Jerusalem. 6He did this in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon, even to Naphtali, around in their ruins. 7He broke down the altars, and beat the Asherah poles and the engraved images into powder, and cut down all the incense altars throughout all the land of Israel, and returned to Jerusalem. 8Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair Yahweh’s house his God. 9They came to Hilkiah the high priest, and delivered the money that was brought into God’s house, which the Levites, the keepers of the threshold, had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin, and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem. 10They delivered it into the hand of the workmen who had the oversight of Yahweh’s house; and the workmen who labored in Yahweh’s house gave it to mend and repair the house; 11even to the carpenters and to the builders gave they it, to buy cut stone, and timber for couplings, and to make beams for the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed. 12The men did the work faithfully: and their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and others of the Levites, all who were skillful with instruments of music. 13Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and set forward all who did the work in every kind of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters. 14When they brought out the money that was brought into Yahweh’s house, Hilkiah the priest found the book of Yahweh’s law given by Moses. 15Hilkiah answered Shaphan the scribe, “I have found the book of the law in Yahweh’s house.” Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. 16Shaphan carried the book to the king, and moreover brought back word to the king, saying, “All that was committed to your servants, they are doing. 17They have emptied out the money that was found in Yahweh’s house, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and into the hand of the workmen.” 18Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, “Hilkiah the priest has delivered me a book.” Shaphan read therein before the king. 19When the king had heard the words of the law, he tore his clothes. 20The king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying, 21“Go inquire of Yahweh for me, and for those who are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found; for great is the wrath of Yahweh that is poured out on us, because our fathers have not kept Yahweh’s word, to do according to all that is written in this book.” 22So Hilkiah, and they whom the king had commanded, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she lived in Jerusalem in the second quarter;) and they spoke to her to that effect. 23She said to them, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: ‘Tell the man who sent you to me, 24“Thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I will bring evil on this place, and on its inhabitants, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah. 25Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore is my wrath poured out on this place, and it shall not be quenched.’”’ 26But to the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of Yahweh, thus you shall tell him, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel: “As touching the words which you have heard, 27because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before God, when you heard his words against this place, and against its inhabitants, and have humbled yourself before me, and have torn your clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard you,” says Yahweh. 28“Behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace, neither shall your eyes see all the evil that I will bring on this place, and on its inhabitants.”’” They brought back word to the king. 29Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. 30The king went up to Yahweh’s house, and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, both great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in Yahweh’s house. 31The king stood in his place, and made a covenant before Yahweh, to walk after Yahweh, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant that were written in this book. 32He caused all who were found in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand. The inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. 33Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Yahweh their God. All his days they didn’t depart from following Yahweh, the God of their fathers.

En Safan las daarin voor het aangezicht des konings. 19Het geschiedde nu, als de koning de woorden der wet hoorde, dat hij zijn klederen scheurde. 20En de koning gebood Hilkia, en Ahikam, den zoon van Safan, en Abdon, den zoon van Micha, en Safan, den schrijver, en Asaja, den knecht des konings, zeggende: 21Gaat heen, vraagt den HEERE voor mij, en voor het overgeblevene in Israel en in Juda, over de woorden dezes boeks, dat gevonden is; want de grimmigheid des HEEREN is groot, die over ons uitgegoten is, omdat onze vaders niet hebben gehouden het woord des HEEREN, om te doen naar al hetgeen in dat boek geschreven is. 22Toen ging Hilkia henen, en die des konings waren, tot de profetes Hulda, de huisvrouw van Sallum, den zoon van Tokhath, den zoon van Hasra, den klederbewaarder. Zij nu woonde te Jeruzalem in het tweede deel; en zij spraken zulks tot haar. 23En zij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Zegt den man, die ulieden tot mij gezonden heeft: 24Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over deze plaats en over haar inwoners brengen; al de vloeken, die geschreven zijn in het boek, dat men voor het aangezicht des konings van Juda gelezen heeft. 25Daarom dat zij Mij verlaten, en anderen goden gerookt hebben, opdat zij Mij tot toorn verwekten met alle werken hunner handen; zo zal Mijn grimmigheid uitgegoten worden tegen deze plaats, en niet uitgeblust worden. 26Maar tot den koning van Juda, die ulieden gezonden heeft, om den HEERE te vragen, tot hem zult gij alzo zeggen: Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Aangaande de woorden, die gij hebt gehoord; 27Omdat uw hart week geworden is, en gij u voor het aangezicht Gods vernederd hebt, als gij Zijn woorden hoordet tegen deze plaats en tegen haar inwoners, en hebt u vernederd voor Mijn aangezicht, en uw klederen gescheurd, en geweend voor Mijn aangezicht, zo heb Ik u ook verhoord, spreekt de HEERE. 28Zie, Ik zal u verzamelen tot uw vaderen, en gij zult met vrede in uw graf verzameld worden, en uw ogen zullen al dat kwaad niet zien, dat Ik over deze plaats en over haar inwoners brengen zal. En zij brachten den koning dit antwoord weder. 29Toen zond de koning henen, en verzamelde alle oudsten van Juda en Jeruzalem. 30En de koning ging op in het huis des HEEREN, en al de mannen van Juda en de inwoners van Jeruzalem, mitsgaders de priesters en de Levieten, en al het volk, van den grote tot den kleine toe; en men las voor hun oren al de woorden van het boek des verbonds, dat in het huis des HEEREN gevonden was. 31En de koning stond in zijn standplaats, en maakte een verbond voor des HEEREN aangezicht, om den HEERE na te wandelen, en om Zijn geboden, en Zijn getuigenissen, en Zijn inzettingen, met zijn ganse hart en met zijn ganse ziel, te onderhouden, doende de woorden des verbonds, die in datzelve boek geschreven zijn. 32En hij deed allen, die te Jeruzalem en in Benjamin gevonden werden, staan; en de inwoners van Jeruzalem deden naar het verbond van God, den God hunner vaderen. 33Josia dan deed alle gruwelen weg uit alle landen, die der kinderen Israels waren, en maakte allen, die in Israel gevonden werden, te dienen; te dienen den HEERE, hun God; al zijn dagen weken zij niet af van den HEERE, den God hunner vaderen, na te volgen.
