1Roboamo andò a Sichem, perché tutto Israele era venuto a Sichem per farlo re. 2Quando Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat, ebbe di ciò notizia, si trovava ancora in Egitto, dov’era fuggito per scampare dal re Salomone; e tornò dall’Egitto. 3Lo mandarono a chiamare, e Geroboamo e tutto Israele vennero a parlare a Roboamo, e gli dissero: 4"Tuo padre ha reso duro il nostro giogo; ora rendi tu più lieve la dura servitù e il giogo pesante che tuo padre ci ha imposti, e noi ti serviremo". Ed egli rispose loro: 5"Tornate da me fra tre giorni". E il popolo se ne andò. 6Il re Roboamo si consigliò coi vecchi ch’erano stati al servizio del re Salomone suo padre mentre era vivo, e disse: "Che mi consigliate voi di rispondere a questo popolo?" 7E quelli gli parlarono così: "Se ti mostri benevolo verso questo popolo, e gli compiaci, e se gli parli con bontà, ti sarà servo per sempre". 8Ma Roboamo abbandonò il consiglio datogli dai vecchi, e si consigliò coi giovani ch’eran cresciuti con lui ed erano stati al suo servizio, 9e disse loro: "Come consigliate voi che rispondiamo a questo popolo che m’ha parlato dicendo: Allevia il giogo che tuo padre ci ha imposto?" 10E i giovani ch’eran cresciuti con lui gli parlarono così: "Ecco quel che dirai a questo popolo che s’è rivolto a te dicendo: Tuo padre ha reso pesante il nostro giogo, e tu ce lo allevia! Gli risponderai così: Il mio dito mignolo è più grosso del corpo di mio padre; 11ora, mio padre vi ha caricati d’un giogo pesante, ma io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò coi flagelli a punte". 12Tre giorni dopo, Geroboamo e tutto il popolo vennero da Roboamo, come aveva ordinato il re dicendo: "Tornate da me fra tre giorni". 13E il re rispose loro duramente, abbandonando il consiglio che i vecchi gli aveano dato; 14e parlò loro secondo il consiglio de’ giovani, dicendo: "Mio padre ha reso pesante il vostro giogo, ma io lo renderò più pesante ancora; mio padre vi ha castigati con la frusta, e io vi castigherò coi flagelli a punte". 15Così il re non diede ascolto al popolo; perché questa era cosa diretta da Dio, affinché si adempisse la parola che l’Eterno avea pronunziata per mezzo di Ahija di Scilo a Geroboamo, figliuolo di Nebat. 16E quando tutto Israele vide che il re non gli dava ascolto, rispose al re, dicendo: "Che abbiam noi da fare con Davide? Noi non abbiamo nulla di comune col figliuolo d’Isai! Ognuno alle sue tende, o Israele! Provvedi ora alla tua casa, o Davide!" E tutto Israele se ne andò alle sue tende. 17Ma sui figliuoli d’Israele che abitavano nelle città di Giuda, regnò Roboamo. 18E il re Roboamo mandò loro Adoram, preposto ai tributi; ma i figliuoli d’Israele lo lapidarono ed egli morì. E il re Roboamo salì in fretta sopra un carro per fuggire a Gerusalemme. 19Così Israele si ribellò alla casa di Davide, ed e rimasto ribelle fino al dì d’oggi.
1Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king. 2When Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard of it, (for he was in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of king Solomon), Jeroboam returned out of Egypt. 3They sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came, and they spoke to Rehoboam, saying, 4“Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.” 5He said to them, “Come again to me after three days.” The people departed. 6King Rehoboam took counsel with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, “What counsel do you give me to return answer to this people?” 7They spoke to him, saying, “If you are kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants forever.” 8But he abandoned the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him, who stood before him. 9He said to them, “What counsel do you give, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Make the yoke that your father put on us lighter?’” 10The young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, “Thus you shall tell the people who spoke to you, saying, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter on us;’ thus you shall say to them, ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist. 11Now whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.’” 12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king asked, saying, “Come to me again the third day.” 13The king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam abandoned the counsel of the old men, 14and spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it. My father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.” 15So the king didn’t listen to the people; for it was brought about of God, that Yahweh might establish his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat. 16When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying, “What portion have we in David? Neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse! Every man to your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So all Israel departed to their tents. 17But as for the children of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them. 18Then king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the men subject to forced labor; and the children of Israel stoned him to death with stones. King Rehoboam made speed to get himself up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem. 19So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

En het volk ging heen. 6En de koning Rehabeam hield raad met de oudsten, die gestaan hadden voor het aangezicht van zijn vader Salomo, als hij leefde, zeggende: Hoe raadt gijlieden, dat men dit volk antwoorden zal? 7En zij spraken tot hem, zeggende: Indien gij dit volk goedertieren en jegens hen goedwillig wezen zult, en tot hen goede woorden spreken, zo zullen zij te allen dage uw knechten zijn. 8Maar hij verliet den raad der oudsten, dien zij hem geraden hadden; en hij hield raad met de jongelingen, die met hem opgewassen waren, die voor zijn aangezicht stonden. 9En hij zeide tot hen: Wat raadt gijlieden, dat wij dit volk antwoorden zullen, die tot mij gesproken hebben, zeggende: Maak het juk, dat uw vader ons opgelegd heeft, lichter? 10En de jongelingen die met hem opgewassen waren, spraken tot hem, zeggende: Alzo zult gij zeggen tot dat volk, die tot u gesproken heeft, zeggende: Uw vader heeft ons juk zwaar gemaakt, maar maak gij het over ons lichter; alzo zult gij tot hen spreken: Mijn kleinste vinger zal dikker zijn dan mijns vaders lenden. 11Indien nu mijn vader een zwaar juk op u heeft doen laden, zo zal ik boven uw juk nog daartoe doen; mijn vader heeft u met geselen gekastijd, maar ik zal u met schorpioenen kastijden. 12Zo kwam Jerobeam en al het volk tot Rehabeam, op den derden dag, gelijk als de koning gesproken had, zeggende: Komt weder tot mij op den derden dag. 13En de koning antwoordde hun hardelijk; want de koning Rehabeam verliet den raad der oudsten. 14En hij sprak tot hen naar den raad der jongelingen, zeggende: Mijn vader heeft uw juk zwaar gemaakt, maar ik zal nog daarboven toedoen; mijn vader heeft u met geselen gekastijd, maar ik zal u met schorpioenen kastijden. 15Alzo hoorde de koning naar het volk niet; want deze omwending was van God, opdat de HEERE Zijn woord bevestigde, hetwelk Hij door den dienst van Ahia, den Siloniet, gesproken had tot Jerobeam, den zoon van Nebat. 16Toen het ganse volk Israel zag, dat de koning naar hen niet hoorde, zo antwoordde het volk den koning, zeggende: Wat deel hebben wij aan David? Ja, geen erve hebben wij aan den zoon van Isai; een ieder naar uw tenten, o Israel! Voorzie nu uw huis, o David! Zo ging het ganse Israel naar zijn tenten. 17Doch aangaande de kinderen van Israel, die in de steden van Juda woonden, over die regeerde Rehabeam ook. 18Toen zond de koning Rehabeam Hadoram, die over de schatting was; en de kinderen Israels stenigden hem met stenen, dat hij stierf; maar de koning Rehabeam verkloekte zich, om op een wagen te klimmen, dat hij naar Jeruzalem vluchtte. 19Alzo vielen de Israelieten van het huis van David af, tot op dezen dag.
