1Giosafat ebbe ricchezze e gloria in abbondanza, e contrasse parentela con Achab. 2In capo a qualche anno, scese a Samaria da Achab; e Achab fece uccidere per lui e per la gente ch’era con lui un gran numero di pecore e di buoi, e lo indusse a salir seco contro Ramoth di Galaad. 3Achab, re d’Israele, disse a Giosafat, re di Giuda: "Vuoi venire con me a Ramoth di Galaad?" Giosafat gli rispose: "Fa’ conto di me come di te stesso, della mia gente come della tua, e verremo con te alla guerra". 4E Giosafat disse al re d’Israele: "Ti prego, consulta oggi la parola dell’Eterno". 5Allora il re d’Israele radunò i profeti, in numero di quattrocento, e disse loro: "Dobbiam noi andare a far guerra a Ramoth di Galaad, o no?" Quelli risposero: "Va’, e Dio la darà nelle mani del re". 6Ma Giosafat disse: "Non v’ha egli qui alcun altro profeta dell’Eterno da poter consultare?" 7Il re d’Israele rispose a Giosafat: "V’è ancora un uomo per mezzo del quale si potrebbe consultare l’Eterno; ma io l’odio perché non mi predice mai nulla di buono, ma sempre del male: è Micaiah figliuolo d’Imla". E Giosafat disse: "Il re non dica così". 8Allora il re d’Israele chiamò un eunuco, e gli disse: "Fa’ venir presto Micaiah, figliuolo d’Imla". 9Or il re d’Israele e Giosafat, re di Giuda, sedevano ciascuno sul suo trono, vestiti de’ loro abiti reali, nell’aia ch’è all’ingresso della porta di Samaria; e tutti i profeti profetavano dinanzi ad essi. 10Sedekia, figliuolo di Kenaana, s’era fatto delle corna di ferro, e disse: "Così dice l’Eterno: Con queste corna darai di cozzo ne’ Siri finché tu li abbia completamente distrutti". 11E tutti i profeti profetavano nello stesso modo, dicendo: "Sali contro Ramoth di Galaad, e vincerai; l’Eterno la darà nelle mani del re". 12Or il messo ch’era andato a chiamar Micaiah, gli parlò così: "Ecco, i profeti tutti, ad una voce, predicono del bene al re; ti prego, sia il tuo parlare come quello d’ognun d’essi, e predici del bene!" 13Ma Micaiah rispose: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno vive, io dirò quel che l’Eterno mi dirà". 14E, come fu giunto dinanzi al re, il re gli disse: "Micaiah, dobbiamo noi andare a far guerra a Ramoth di Galaad, o no?" Quegli rispose: "Andate pure, e vincerete; i nemici saranno dati nelle vostre mani". 15E il re gli disse: "Quante volte dovrò io scongiurarti di non dirmi se non la verità nel nome dell’Eterno?" 16Micaiah rispose: "Ho veduto tutto Israele disperso su per i monti, come pecore che non hanno pastore; e l’Eterno ha detto: Questa gente non ha padrone; se ne torni ciascuno in pace a casa sua". 17E il re d’Israele disse a Giosafat: "Non te l’ho io detto che costui non mi predirebbe nulla di buono, ma soltanto del male?" 18E Micaiah replicò: "Perciò ascoltate la parola dell’Eterno. Io ho veduto l’Eterno che sedeva sul suo trono, e tutto l’esercito celeste che gli stava a destra e a sinistra. 19E l’Eterno disse: Chi sedurrà Achab, re d’Israele, affinché salga a Ramoth di Galaad e vi perisca? E uno rispose in un modo e l’altro in un altro. 20Allora si fece avanti uno spirito, il quale si presentò dinanzi all’Eterno, e disse: Lo sedurrò io. L’Eterno gli disse: E come? 21Quegli rispose: Io uscirò, e sarò spirito di menzogna in bocca a tutti i suoi profeti. L’Eterno gli disse: Sì, riuscirai a sedurlo; esci, e fa’ così. 22Ed ora ecco che l’Eterno ha posto uno spirito di menzogna in bocca a questi tuoi profeti; ma l’Eterno ha pronunziato del male contro di te". 23Allora Sedekia, figliuolo di Kenaana, si accostò, diede uno schiaffo a Micaiah, e disse: "Per dove è passato lo spirito dell’Eterno quand’è uscito da me per parlare a te?" 24Micaiah rispose: "Lo vedrai il giorno che andrai di camera in camera per nasconderti!" 25E il re d’Israele disse ai suoi servi: "Prendete Micaiah, menatelo da Amon, governatore della città, e da Joas, figliuolo del re, 26e dite loro: Così dice il re: Mettete costui in prigione, nutritelo di pan d’afflizione e d’acqua d’afflizione, finch’io ritorni sano e salvo". 27E Micaiah disse: "Se tu ritorni sano e salvo, non sarà l’Eterno quegli che avrà parlato per bocca mia". Il re d’Israele si travestì, e andarono in battaglia. 30Or il re di Siria avea dato quest’ordine ai capitani dei suoi carri: "Non combattete contro veruno, piccolo o grande, ma contro il solo re d’Israele". 31E quando i capitani dei carri scorsero Giosafat, dissero: "Quello è il re d’Israele"; e lo circondarono per attaccarlo; ma Giosafat mandò un grido, e l’Eterno lo soccorse; e Dio li attirò lungi da lui. 32E allorché i capitani dei carri s’accorsero ch’egli non era il re d’Israele, cessarono d’assalirlo. 33Or qualcuno scoccò a caso la freccia del suo arco, e ferì il re d’Israele tra la corazza e le falde; onde il re disse al suo cocchiere: "Vòlta, menami fuori del campo, perché son ferito". 34Ma la battaglia fu così accanita quel giorno, che il re fu trattenuto sul suo carro in faccia ai Siri fino alla sera, e sul tramontare del sole morì.
1Now Jehoshaphat had riches and honor in abundance; and he joined affinity with Ahab. 2After certain years he went down to Ahab to Samaria. Ahab killed sheep and cattle for him in abundance, and for the people who were with him, and moved him to go up with him to Ramoth Gilead. 3Ahab king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat king of Judah, “Will you go with me to Ramoth Gilead?” He answered him, “I am as you are, and my people as your people. We will be with you in the war.” 4Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Please inquire first for Yahweh’s word.” 5Then the king of Israel gathered the prophets together, four hundred men, and said to them, “Shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?” They said, “Go up; for God will deliver it into the hand of the king.” 6But Jehoshaphat said, “Isn’t there here a prophet of Yahweh besides, that we may inquire of him?” 7The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of Yahweh; but I hate him, for he never prophesies good concerning me, but always evil. He is Micaiah the son of Imla.” Jehoshaphat said, “Don’t let the king say so.” 8Then the king of Israel called an officer, and said, “Get Micaiah the son of Imla quickly.” 9Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah sat each on his throne, arrayed in their robes, and they were sitting in an open place at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them. 10Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, “Thus says Yahweh, ‘With these you shall push the Syrians, until they are consumed.’” 11All the prophets prophesied so, saying, “Go up to Ramoth Gilead, and prosper; for Yahweh will deliver it into the hand of the king.” 12The messenger who went to call Micaiah spoke to him, saying, “Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one mouth. Let your word therefore, please be like one of theirs, and speak good.” 13Micaiah said, “As Yahweh lives, what my God says, that will I speak.” 14When he had come to the king, the king said to him, “Micaiah, shall we go to Ramoth Gilead to battle, or shall I forbear?” He said, “Go up, and prosper. They shall be delivered into your hand.” 15The king said to him, “How many times shall I adjure you that you speak to me nothing but the truth in Yahweh’s name?” 16He said, “I saw all Israel scattered on the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd. Yahweh said, ‘These have no master. Let them return every man to his house in peace.’” 17The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn’t I tell you that he would not prophesy good concerning me, but evil?” 18Micaiah said, “Therefore hear Yahweh’s word: I saw Yahweh sitting on his throne, and all the army of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left. 19Yahweh said, ‘Who shall entice Ahab king of Israel, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth Gilead?’ One spoke saying in this way, and another saying in that way. 20A spirit came out, stood before Yahweh, and said, ‘I will entice him.’ “Yahweh said to him, ‘How?’ 21“He said, ‘I will go, and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets.’ “He said, ‘You will entice him, and will prevail also. Go and do so.’ 22“Now therefore, behold, Yahweh has put a lying spirit in the mouth of these your prophets; and Yahweh has spoken evil concerning you.” 23Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, “Which way did the Spirit of Yahweh go from me to speak to you?” 24Micaiah said, “Behold, you shall see on that day, when you shall go into an inner room to hide yourself.” 25The king of Israel said, “Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor of the city, and to Joash the king’s son; 26and say, ‘Thus says the king, “Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I return in peace.”’” 27Micaiah said, “If you return at all in peace, Yahweh has not spoken by me.” He said, “Listen, you peoples, all of you!” 28So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 29The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “I will disguise myself, and go into the battle; but you put on your robes.” So the king of Israel disguised himself; and they went into the battle. 30Now the king of Syria had commanded the captains of his chariots, saying, “Fight neither with small nor great, except only with the king of Israel.” 31When the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “It is the king of Israel!” Therefore they turned around to fight against him. But Jehoshaphat cried out, and Yahweh helped him; and God moved them to depart from him. 32When the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him. 33A certain man drew his bow at random, and struck the king of Israel between the joints of the armor. Therefore he said to the driver of the chariot, “Turn your hand, and carry me out of the army; for I am severely wounded.” 34The battle increased that day. However the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot against the Syrians until the evening; and about the time of the going down of the sun, he died.

En hij zeide tot hem: Zo zal ik zijn, gelijk gij zijt, en gelijk uw volk is, zal mijn volk zijn, en wij zullen met u zijn in dezen krijg. 4Verder zeide Josafat tot den koning van Israel: Vraag toch als heden naar het woord des HEEREN. 5Toen vergaderde de koning van Israel de profeten, vierhonderd mannen, en hij zeide tot hen: Zullen wij tegen Ramoth in Gilead ten strijde trekken, of zal ik het nalaten? En zij zeiden: Trek op, want God zal hen in de hand des konings geven. 6Maar Josafat zeide: Is hier niet nog een profeet des HEEREN, dat wij van hem vragen mochten? 7Toen zeide de koning van Israel tot Josafat: Er is nog een man, om door hem den HEERE te vragen; maar ik haat hem, want hij profeteert over mij niets goeds, maar altijd kwaad; deze is Micha, de zoon van Jimla. En hij zeide: Trekt op, en gijlieden zult voorspoedig zijn, want zij zullen in uw hand gegeven worden. 15En de koning zeide tot hem: Tot hoevele reizen zal ik u bezweren, opdat gij tot mij niet spreekt, dan de waarheid, in den Naam des HEEREN? 16En hij zeide: Ik zag het ganse Israel verstrooid op de bergen, gelijk schapen, die geen herder hebben; en de HEERE zeide: Dezen hebben geen heer; een iegelijk kere weder naar zijn huis in vrede. 17Toen zeide de koning van Israel tot Josafat: Heb ik tot u niet gezegd: Hij zal over mij niets goeds, maar kwaad profeteren? 18Verder zeide hij: Daarom hoort het woord des HEEREN: Ik zag den HEERE, zittende op Zijn troon, en al het hemelse heir, staande aan Zijn rechter hand en Zijn linkerhand. 19En de HEERE zeide: Wie zal Achab, den koning van Israel, overreden, dat hij optrekke, en valle te Ramoth in Gilead? Daarna zeide Hij: Deze zegt aldus, en die zegt alzo. 20Toen kwam een geest voort, en stond voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, en zeide: Ik zal hem overreden. En de HEERE zeide tot hem: Waarmede? 21En Hij zeide: Ik zal uitgaan, en een leugengeest zijn in den mond van al zijn profeten. En Hij zeide: Gij zult overreden, en zult ook vermogen; ga uit, en doe alzo. 22Nu dan, zie, de HEERE heeft een leugengeest in den mond van deze uw profeten gegeven, en de HEERE heeft kwaad over u gesproken. 23Toen trad Zedekia, de zoon van Kenaana, toe, en sloeg Micha op het kinnebakken, en hij zeide: Door wat weg is de Geest des HEEREN van mij doorgegaan, om u aan te spreken? 24En Micha zeide: Zie, gij zult het zien aan dienzelfden dag, als gij zult gaan van kamer in kamer, om u te versteken. 25De koning van Israel nu zeide: Neemt Micha, en brengt hem weder tot Amon, den overste der stad, en tot Joas, den zoon des konings; 26En gijlieden zult zeggen: Zo zegt de koning: Zet dezen in het gevangenhuis, en spijst hem met brood der bedruktheid, en met water der bedruktheid, totdat ik met vrede wederkom. 27En Micha zeide: Indien gij enigszins met vrede wederkomt, zo heeft de HEERE door mij niet gesproken. Alzo verstelde zich de koning van Israel, en zij kwamen in den strijd. 30De koning nu van Syrie had geboden aan de oversten der wagens, die hij had, zeggende: Gijlieden zult niet strijden tegen kleinen noch groten, maar tegen den koning van Israel alleen. 31Het geschiedde dan, als de oversten der wagenen Josafat zagen, dat zij zeiden: Die is de koning van Israel; en zij togen rondom hem, om te strijden; maar Josafat riep, en de HEERE hielp hem, en God wendde hen van hem af. 32Want het geschiedde, als de oversten der wagenen zagen, dat het de koning van Israel niet was, dat zij van achter hem afkeerden. 33Toen spande een man den boog in zijn eenvoudigheid, en schoot den koning van Israel tussen de gespen en tussen het pantsier. Toen zeide hij tot den voerman: Keer uw hand en voer mij uit het leger, want ik ben verwond. 34En de strijd nam op dien dag toe, en de koning van Israel deed zich met den wagen staande houden tegenover de Syriers, tot den avond toe; en hij stierf ter tijd, als de zon onderging.
