1Dopo queste cose, i figliuoli di Moab e i figliuoli di Ammon, e con loro de’ Maoniti, mossero contro Giosafat per fargli guerra. 2E vennero dei messi a informare Giosafat, dicendo: "Una gran moltitudine s’avanza contro di te dall’altra parte del mare, dalla Siria, ed è giunta a Hatsatson-Thamar", che è En-Ghedi. 3E Giosafat ebbe paura, si dispose a cercare l’Eterno, e bandì un digiuno per tutto Giuda. 4Giuda si radunò per implorare aiuto dall’Eterno, e da tutte quante le città di Giuda venivan gli abitanti a cercare l’Eterno. 5E Giosafat, stando in piè in mezzo alla raunanza di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, nella casa dell’Eterno, davanti al cortile nuovo, disse: 6"O Eterno, Dio de’ nostri padri, non sei tu l’Iddio dei cieli? e non sei tu che signoreggi su tutti i regni delle nazioni? e non hai tu nelle tue mani la forza e la potenza, in guisa che nessuno ti può resistere? 7Non sei tu quegli, o Dio nostro, che cacciasti gli abitanti di questo paese d’innanzi al tuo popolo d’Israele, e lo desti per sempre alla progenie d’Abrahamo, il quale ti amò? 8E quelli l’hanno abitato e v’hanno edificato un santuario per il tuo nome, dicendo: 9Quando c’incolga qualche calamità, spada, giudizio, peste o carestia, noi ci presenteremo dinanzi a questa casa e dinanzi a te, poiché il tuo nome è in questa casa; e a te grideremo nella nostra tribolazione, e tu ci udrai e ci salverai. 10Ed ora ecco che i figliuoli d’Ammon e di Moab e quei del monte di Seir, nelle terre dei quali non permettesti ad Israele d’entrare quando veniva dal paese d’Egitto, ed egli li lasciò da parte e non li distrusse, 11eccoli che ora ci ricompensano, venendo a cacciarci dalla eredità di cui ci hai dato il possesso. 12O Dio nostro, non farai tu giudizio di costoro? Poiché noi siamo senza forza, di fronte a questa gran moltitudine che s’avanza contro di noi; e non sappiamo che fare, ma gli occhi nostri sono su te!" 13E tutto Giuda, perfino i bambini, le mogli, i figliuoli, stavano in piè davanti all’Eterno. 14Allora lo spirito dell’Eterno investì in mezzo alla raunanza Jahaziel, figliuolo di Zaccaria, figliuolo di Benaia, figliuolo di Jeiel, figliuolo di Mattania, il Levita, di tra i figliuoli d’Asaf. 15E Jahaziel disse: "Porgete orecchio, voi tutti di Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme, e tu, o re Giosafat! Così vi dice l’Eterno: Non temete e non vi sgomentate a motivo di questa gran moltitudine; poiché questa non è battaglia vostra, ma di Dio. 16Domani, scendete contro di loro; eccoli che vengon su per la salita di Tsits, e voi li troverete all’estremità della valle, dirimpetto al deserto di Jeruel. 17Questa battaglia non l’avete a combatter voi: presentatevi, tenetevi fermi, e vedrete la liberazione che l’Eterno vi darà. O Giuda, o Gerusalemme, non temete e non vi sgomentate; domani, uscite contro di loro, e l’Eterno sarà con voi". 18Allora Giosafat chinò la faccia a terra, e tutto Giuda e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si prostrarono dinanzi all’Eterno e l’adorarono. 19E i Leviti di tra i figliuoli dei Kehathiti e di tra i figliuoli dei Korahiti si levarono per lodare ad altissima voce l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele. 20La mattina seguente si levarono di buon’ora, e si misero in cammino verso il deserto di Tekoa; e come si mettevano in cammino, Giosafat, stando in piedi, disse: "Ascoltatemi, o Giuda, e voi abitanti di Gerusalemme! Credete nell’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio vostro, e sarete al sicuro; credete ai suoi profeti, e trionferete!" 21E dopo aver tenuto consiglio col popolo, stabilì dei cantori che, vestiti in santa magnificenza, cantassero le lodi dell’Eterno, e camminando alla testa dell’esercito, dicessero: "Celebrate l’Eterno, perché la sua benignità dura in perpetuo!" 22E com’essi cominciavano i canti di gioia e di lode, l’Eterno tese un’imboscata contro i figliuoli di Ammon e di Moab e contro quelli del monte Seir ch’eran venuti contro Giuda; e rimasero sconfitti. 23I figliuoli di Ammon e di Moab assalirono gli abitanti del monte di Seir per votarli allo sterminio e distruggerli; e quand’ebbero annientati gli abitanti di Seir, si diedero a distruggersi a vicenda. 24E quando que’ di Giuda furon giunti sull’altura donde si scorge il deserto, volsero lo sguardo verso la moltitudine, ed ecco i cadaveri che giacevano a terra; nessuno era scampato. 25Allora Giosafat e la sua gente andarono a far bottino delle loro spoglie; e fra i cadaveri trovarono abbondanza di ricchezze, di vesti e di oggetti preziosi; e se ne appropriarono più che ne potessero portare; tre giorni misero a portar via il bottino, tant’era copioso. 26Il quarto giorno si radunarono nella Valle di Benedizione, dove benedissero l’Eterno; per questo, quel luogo è stato chiamato Valle di Benedizione fino al dì d’oggi. 27Tutti gli uomini di Giuda e di Gerusalemme, con a capo Giosafat, partirono con gioia per tornare a Gerusalemme, perché l’Eterno li avea ricolmi d’allegrezza, liberandoli dai loro nemici. 28Ed entrarono in Gerusalemme e nella casa dell’Eterno al suono de’ saltèri, delle cetre e delle trombe. 29E il terrore di Dio s’impadronì di tutti i regni degli altri paesi, quando udirono che l’Eterno avea combattuto contro i nemici d’Israele. 30E il regno di Giosafat ebbe requie; il suo Dio gli diede pace d’ogni intorno. 31Così Giosafat regnò sopra Giuda. 1After this, the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them some of the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. 2Then some came who told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea from Syria. Behold, they are in Hazazon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 3Jehoshaphat was alarmed, and set himself to seek to Yahweh. He proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. 4Judah gathered themselves together, to seek help from Yahweh. They came out of all the cities of Judah to seek Yahweh. 5Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in Yahweh’s house, before the new court; 6and he said, “Yahweh, the God of our fathers, aren’t you God in heaven? Aren’t you ruler over all the kingdoms of the nations? Power and might are in your hand, so that no one is able to withstand you. 7Didn’t you, our God, drive out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel, and give it to the seed of Abraham your friend forever? 8They lived in it, and have built you a sanctuary in it for your name, saying, 9‘If evil comes on us—the sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this house, and before you, (for your name is in this house), and cry to you in our affliction, and you will hear and save.’ 10Now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom you would not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned aside from them, and didn’t destroy them; 11behold, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of your possession, which you have given us to inherit. 12Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no might against this great company that comes against us; neither know we what to do, but our eyes are on you.” 13All Judah stood before Yahweh, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. 14Then the Spirit of Yahweh came on Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite, of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly; 15and he said, “Listen, all Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you king Jehoshaphat. Thus says Yahweh to you, ‘Don’t be afraid, neither be dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God’s. 16Tomorrow go down against them. Behold, they are coming up by the ascent of Ziz. You shall find them at the end of the valley, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 17You will not need to fight this battle. Set yourselves, stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh with you, O Judah and Jerusalem. Don’t be afraid, nor be dismayed. Go out against them tomorrow, for Yahweh is with you.’” 18Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground; and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell down before Yahweh, worshiping Yahweh. 19The Levites, of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites, stood up to praise Yahweh, the God of Israel, with an exceeding loud voice. 20They rose early in the morning, and went out into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Listen to me, Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem! Believe in Yahweh your God, so you shall be established! Believe his prophets, so you shall prosper.” 21When he had taken counsel with the people, he appointed those who should sing to Yahweh, and give praise in holy array, as they went out before the army, and say, Give thanks to Yahweh; for his loving kindness endures forever. 22When they began to sing and to praise, Yahweh set ambushers against the children of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were struck. 23For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir, utterly to kill and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, everyone helped to destroy another. 24When Judah came to the place overlooking the wilderness, they looked at the multitude; and behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and there were no one who escaped. 25When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take their plunder, they found among them in abundance both riches and dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in taking the plunder, it was so much. 26On the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Beracah; for there they blessed Yahweh: therefore the name of that place was called The valley of Beracah to this day. 27Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in their forefront, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for Yahweh had made them to rejoice over their enemies. 28They came to Jerusalem with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets to Yahweh’s house. 29The fear of God was on all the kingdoms of the countries, when they heard that Yahweh fought against the enemies of Israel. 30So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet; for his God gave him rest all around. 31Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-five years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. 32He walked in the way of Asa his father, and didn’t turn aside from it, doing that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh. 33However the high places were not taken away; neither as yet had the people set their hearts to the God of their fathers. 34Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the history of Jehu the son of Hanani, which is inserted in the book of the kings of Israel. 35After this Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined himself with Ahaziah king of Israel. The same did very wickedly: 36and he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish; and they made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37Then Eliezer the son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you have joined yourself with Ahaziah, Yahweh has destroyed your works.” The ships were broken, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish.

Vreest niet, en ontzet u niet, gaat morgen uit, hun tegen, want de HEERE zal met u wezen. 18Toen neigde zich Josafat met het aangezicht ter aarde; en gans Juda en de inwoners van Jeruzalem vielen neder voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, aanbiddende den HEERE. 19En de Levieten uit de kinderen der Kahathieten, en uit de kinderen der Korahieten, stonden op, om den HEERE, den God Israels, met luider stem ten hoogste te prijzen. 20En zij maakten zich des morgens vroeg op, en togen uit naar de woestijn van Thekoa; en als zij uittogen, stond Josafat en zeide: Hoort mij, o Juda, en gij, inwoners van Jeruzalem! Gelooft in den HEERE, uw God, zo zult gij bevestigd worden; gelooft aan Zijn profeten, en gij zult voorspoedig zijn. 21Hij nu beraadslaagde zich met het volk, en hij stelde den HEERE zangers, die de heilige Majesteit prijzen zouden, voor de toegerusten uitgaande en zeggende: Looft den HEERE, want Zijn goedertierenheid is tot in eeuwigheid! 22Ter tijd nu, als aanhieven met een vreugdegeroep en lofzang, stelde de HEERE achterlagen tegen de kinderen Ammons, Moab, en die van het gebergte Seir, die tegen Juda gekomen waren; en zij werden geslagen. 23Want de kinderen Ammons en Moab stonden op tegen de inwoners van het gebergte Seir, om te verbannen en te verdelgen; en als zij met de inwoners van Seir een einde gemaakt hadden, hielpen zij de een den ander ten verderve. 24Als nu Juda tot den wachttoren in de woestijn gekomen was, wendden zij zich naar de menigte; en ziet, het waren dode lichamen, liggende op de aarde, en niemand was ontkomen. 25Josafat nu en zijn volk kwamen, om hun buit te roven, en zij vonden bij hen in menigte, zowel have en dode lichamen, als kostelijk gereedschap, en namen voor zich weg, totdat zij niet meer dragen konden; en zij roofden den buit drie dagen, want dies was veel. 26En op den vierden dag vergaderden zij zich in het dal van Beracha, want daar loofden zij den HEERE; daarom noemden zij den naam dierzelver plaats het dal van Beracha, tot op dezen dag. 27Daarna keerden alle mannen van Juda en Jeruzalem weder, en Josafat in de voorspitse van hen, om wederom met blijdschap tot Jeruzalem te komen; want de HEERE had hen verblijd over hun vijanden. 28En zij kwamen te Jeruzalem, met luiten, en met harpen, en met trompetten, tot het huis des HEEREN. 29En er werd een verschrikking Gods over alle koninkrijken dier landen, als zij hoorden, dat de HEERE tegen de vijanden van Israel gestreden had. 30Alzo was het koninkrijk van Josafat stil; en zijn God gaf hem rust rondom henen. 31Zo regeerde Josafat over Juda; hij was vijf en dertig jaren oud, als hij koning werd, en hij regeerde vijf en twintig jaren te Jeruzalem; en de naam zijner moeder was Azuba, een dochter van Silhi. 32En hij wandelde in den weg van zijn vader Asa, en hij week daarvan niet af, doende dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN. 33Evenwel werden de hoogten niet weggenomen; want het volk had nog zijn hart niet geschikt tot den God zijner vaderen. 34Het overige nu der geschiedenissen van Josafat, de eerste en de laatste, ziet, die zijn geschreven in de geschiedenissen van Jehu, den zoon van Hanani, die men hem optekenen deed in het boek der koningen van Israel. 35Doch na dezen vergezelschapte zich Josafat, de koning van Juda, met Ahazia, den koning van Israel; die handelde goddelooslijk in zijn doen. 36En hij vergezelschapte zich met hem, om schepen te maken, om naar Tharsis te gaan; en zij maakten de schepen te Ezeon-Geber. 37Maar Eliezer, de zoon van Dodava, van Maresa, profeteerde tegen Josafat, zeggende: Omdat gij u met Ahazia vergezelschapt hebt, heeft de HEERE uw werken verscheurd. Alzo werden de schepen verbroken, dat zij niet konden naar Tharsis gaan.
