1Joas avea sette anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò quarant’anni a Gerusalemme. Sua madre si chiamava Tsibia da Beer-Sceba. 2Joas fece ciò ch’è giusto agli occhi dell’Eterno durante tutto il tempo che visse il sacerdote Jehoiada. 3E Jehoiada prese per lui due mogli, dalle quali egli ebbe de’ figliuoli e delle figliuole. 4Dopo queste cose venne in cuore a Joas di restaurare la casa dell’Eterno. 5Radunò i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e disse loro: "Andate per le città di Giuda, e raccogliete anno per anno in tutto Israele del danaro per restaurare la casa dell’Iddio vostro; e guardate di sollecitar la cosa". Ma i Leviti non s’affrettarono. 6Allora il re chiamò Jehoiada loro capo e gli disse: "Perché non hai tu procurato che i Leviti portassero da Giuda e da Gerusalemme la tassa che Mosè, servo dell’Eterno, e la raunanza d’Israele stabilirono per la tenda della testimonianza?" 7Poiché i figliuoli di quella scellerata donna d’Athalia aveano saccheggiato la casa di Dio e aveano perfino adoperato per i Baali tutte le cose consacrate della casa dell’Eterno. 8Il re dunque comandò che si facesse una cassa e che la si mettesse fuori, alla porta della casa dell’Eterno. 9Poi fu intimato in Giuda e in Gerusalemme che si portasse all’Eterno la tassa che Mosè, servo di Dio, aveva imposta ad Israele nel deserto. 10E tutti i capi e tutto il popolo se ne rallegrarono e portarono il danaro e lo gettarono nella cassa finché tutti ebbero pagato. 11Or quand’era il momento che i Leviti doveano portar la cassa agl’ispettori reali, perché vedevano che v’era molto danaro, il segretario del re e il commissario del sommo sacerdote venivano a vuotare la cassa; la prendevano, poi la riportavano al suo posto; facevan così ogni giorno, e raccolsero danaro in abbondanza. 12E il re e Jehoiada lo davano a quelli incaricati d’eseguire i lavori della casa dell’Eterno; e questi pagavano degli scalpellini e de’ legnaiuoli per restaurare la casa dell’Eterno, e anche de’ lavoratori di ferro e di rame per restaurare la casa dell’Eterno. 13Così gl’incaricati dei lavori si misero all’opera, e per le loro mani furon compiute le riparazioni; essi rimisero la casa di Dio in buono stato, e la consolidarono. 14E, quand’ebbero finito, portarono davanti al re e davanti a Jehoiada il rimanente del danaro, col quale si fecero degli utensili per la casa dell’Eterno: degli utensili per il servizio e per gli olocausti, delle coppe, e altri utensili d’oro e d’argento. E durante tutta la vita di Jehoiada, si offrirono del continuo olocausti nella casa dell’Eterno. 15Ma Jehoiada, fattosi vecchio e sazio di giorni, morì; quando morì, avea centotrent’anni; 16e fu sepolto nella città di Davide coi re, perché avea fatto del bene in Israele, per il servizio di Dio e della sua casa. 17Dopo la morte di Jehoiada, i capi di Giuda vennero al re e si prostrarono dinanzi a lui; allora il re die’ loro ascolto; 18ed essi abbandonarono la casa dell’Eterno, dell’Iddio dei loro padri, e servirono gl’idoli d’Astarte e gli altri idoli; e questa loro colpa trasse l’ira dell’Eterno su Giuda e su Gerusalemme. 19L’Eterno mandò loro bensì de’ profeti per ricondurli a sé e questi protestarono contro la loro condotta, ma essi non vollero ascoltarli. 20Allora lo spirito di Dio investì Zaccaria, figliuolo del sacerdote Jehoiada, il quale, in piè, dominando il popolo, disse loro: "Così dice Iddio: Perché trasgredite voi i comandamenti dell’Eterno? Voi non prospererete; poiché avete abbandonato l’Eterno, anch’egli vi abbandonerà". 21Ma quelli fecero una congiura contro di lui, e lo lapidarono per ordine del re, nel cortile della casa del l’Eterno. 22E il re Joas non si ricordò della benevolenza usata verso lui da Jehoiada, padre di Zaccaria, e gli uccise il figliuolo; il quale, morendo, disse: "L’Eterno lo veda e ne ridomandi conto!" 23E avvenne che, scorso l’anno, l’esercito dei Siri salì contro Joas, e venne in Giuda e a Gerusalemme. Essi misero a morte fra il popolo tutti i capi, e ne mandarono tutte le spoglie al re di Damasco. 24E benché l’esercito de’ Siri fosse venuto con piccolo numero d’uomini, pure l’Eterno die’ loro nelle mani un esercito grandissimo, perché quelli aveano abbandonato l’Eterno, l’Iddio dei loro padri. Così i Siri fecero giustizia di Joas. 25E quando questi si furon partiti da lui, lasciandolo in gravi sofferenze, i suoi servi ordirono contro di lui una congiura, perch’egli avea versato il sangue dei figliuoli del sacerdote Jehoiada, e lo uccisero nel suo letto. Così morì, e fu sepolto nella città di Davide, ma non nei sepolcri dei re. 26Quelli che congiurarono contro di lui furono Zabad, figliuolo di Scimeath, un’Ammonita, e Jozabad, figliuolo di Scimrith, una Moabita. 27Or quanto concerne i suoi figliuoli, il gran numero di tributi impostigli e il restauro della casa di Dio, si trova scritto nelle memorie del libro dei re. 1Joash was seven years old when he began to reign; and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Zibiah, of Beersheba. 2Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh all the days of Jehoiada the priest. 3Jehoiada took for him two wives; and he became the father of sons and daughters. 4After this, Joash intended to restore Yahweh’s house. 5He gathered together the priests and the Levites, and said to them, “Go out to the cities of Judah, and gather money to repair the house of your God from all Israel from year to year. See that you expedite this matter.” However the Levites didn’t do it right away. 6The king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said to him, “Why haven’t you required of the Levites to bring in the tax of Moses the servant of Yahweh, and of the assembly of Israel, out of Judah and out of Jerusalem, for the tent of the testimony?” 7For the sons of Athaliah, that wicked woman, had broken up God’s house; and they also gave all the dedicated things of Yahweh’s house to the Baals. 8So the king commanded, and they made a chest, and set it outside at the gate of Yahweh’s house. 9They made a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem, to bring in for Yahweh the tax that Moses the servant of God laid on Israel in the wilderness. 10All the princes and all the people rejoiced, and brought in, and cast into the chest, until they had made an end. 11It was so, that whenever the chest was brought to the king’s officers by the hand of the Levites, and when they saw that there was much money, the king’s scribe and the chief priest’s officer came and emptied the chest, and took it, and carried it to its place again. Thus they did day by day, and gathered money in abundance. 12The king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of Yahweh’s house; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore Yahweh’s house, and also such as worked iron and brass to repair Yahweh’s house. 13So the workmen worked, and the work of repairing went forward in their hands, and they set up God’s house in its state, and strengthened it. 14When they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, of which were made vessels for Yahweh’s house, even vessels with which to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. They offered burnt offerings in Yahweh’s house continually all the days of Jehoiada. 15But Jehoiada grew old and was full of days, and he died; one hundred thirty years old was he when he died. 16They buried him in the city of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house. 17Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and made obeisance to the king. Then the king listened to them. 18They abandoned the house of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and the idols; and wrath came on Judah and Jerusalem for this their guiltiness. 19Yet he sent prophets to them, to bring them again to Yahweh; and they testified against them: but they would not give ear. 20The Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you disobey the commandments of Yahweh, so that you can’t prosper? Because you have forsaken Yahweh, he has also forsaken you.’” 21They conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of Yahweh’s house. 22Thus Joash the king didn’t remember the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but killed his son. When he died, he said, “May Yahweh look at it, and repay it.” 23At the end of the year, the army of the Syrians came up against him: and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people, and sent all their plunder to the king of Damascus. 24For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; and Yahweh delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken Yahweh, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash. 25When they were departed for him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and killed him on his bed, and he died; and they buried him in the city of David, but they didn’t bury him in the tombs of the kings. 26These are those who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess. 27Now concerning his sons, and the greatness of the burdens laid on him, and the rebuilding of God’s house, behold, they are written in the commentary of the book of the kings. Amaziah his son reigned in his place.
1Joas was zeven jaren oud, toen hij koning werd, en hij regeerde veertig jaren te Jeruzalem; en de naam zijner moeder was Zibja, van Ber-seba. 2En Joas deed dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN, al de dagen van den priester Jojada. 3En Jojada nam voor hem twee vrouwen; en hij gewon zonen en dochteren. 4Het geschiedde nu na dezen, dat het in het hart van Joas was, het huis des HEEREN te vernieuwen. 5Zo vergaderde hij de priesteren en de Levieten, en zeide tot hen: Trekt uit tot de steden van Juda, en vergadert geld van het ganse Israel, om het huis uws Gods te beteren van jaar tot jaar; en gijlieden, haast tot deze zaak; maar de Levieten haastten niet. 6En de koning riep Jojada, het hoofd, en zeide tot hem: Waarom hebt gij geen onderzoek gedaan bij de Levieten, dat zij uit Juda en uit Jeruzalem inbrengen zouden de schatting van Mozes, den knecht des HEEREN, en van de gemeente van Israel, voor de tent der getuigenis? 7Want als Athalia goddelooslijk handelde, hadden haar zonen het huis Gods opengebroken, ja, zelfs alle geheiligde dingen van het huis des HEEREN besteed aan de Baals. 8En de koning gebood, en zij maakten een kist, en stelden die buiten aan de poort van het huis des HEEREN. 9En men deed uitroeping in Juda en in Jeruzalem, dat men den HEERE inbrengen zou de schatting van Mozes, den knecht Gods, over Israel in de woestijn. 10Toen verblijdden zich alle oversten en al het volk, en zij brachten in, en wierpen in de kist, totdat men voleind had. 11Het geschiedde nu ter tijd, als hij de kist, naar des konings bevel, door de hand der Levieten, inbracht, en als zij zagen, dat er veel gelds was, dat de schrijver des konings kwam, en de bestelde van de hoofdpriester, en de kist ledig maakten, en die opnamen, en die wederbrachten aan haar plaats; alzo deden zij van dag tot dag, en verzamelden geld in menigte; 12Hetwelk de koning en Jojada gaven aan dengenen, die het werk van den dienst van het huis des HEEREN verzorgden; en zij huurden houwers en timmerlieden, om het huis des HEEREN te vernieuwen, mitsgaders ook werkmeesters in ijzer en koper, om het huis des HEEREN te beteren. 13Zo deden de verzorgers van het werk, dat de betering des werks door hun hand toenam; en zij herstelden het huis Gods in zijn gestaltenis, en maakten het vast. 14Als zij nu voleind hadden, brachten zij voor den koning en Jojada het overige des gelds, waarvan hij vaten maakte voor het huis des HEEREN, vaten om te dienen en te offeren, en rookschalen, en gouden en zilveren vaten; en zij offerden geduriglijk brandofferen in het huis des HEEREN al de dagen van Jojada. 15En Jojada werd oud en zat van dagen, en stierf; hij was honderd en dertig jaren oud, toen hij stierf. 16En zij begroeven hem in de stad Davids, bij de koningen; want hij had goed gedaan in Israel, beide aan God en zijn huize. 17Maar na den dood van Jojada kwamen de vorsten van Juda, en bogen zich neder voor den koning; toen hoorde de koning naar hen. 18Zo verlieten zij het huis des HEEREN, des Gods hunner vaderen, en dienden de bossen en de afgoden; toen was een grote toornigheid over Juda en Jeruzalem, om deze hun schuld. 19Doch Hij zond profeten onder hen, om hen tot den HEERE te doen wederkeren; die betuigden tegen hen, maar zij neigden de oren niet. 20En de Geest Gods toog Zacharia aan, den zoon van Jojada, den priester, die boven het volk stond, en hij zeide tot hen: Zo zegt God: Waarom overtreedt gij de geboden des HEEREN? Daarom zult gij niet voorspoedig zijn; dewijl gij den HEERE verlaten hebt, zo zal Hij u verlaten. 21En zij maakten een verbintenis tegen hem, en stenigden hem met stenen door het gebod des konings, in het voorhof van het huis des HEEREN. 22Zo gedacht de koning Joas niet der weldadigheid, die zijn vader Jojada aan hem gedaan had, maar doodde zijn zoon; dewelke, als hij stierf, zeide: De HEERE zal het zien en zoeken! 23Daarom geschiedde het met den omgang des jaars, dat de heirkracht van Syrie tegen hem optoog, en zij kwamen tot Juda en Jeruzalem, en verdierven uit het volk al de vorsten des volks; en zij zonden al hun roof tot den koning van Damaskus. 24Hoewel de heirkracht van Syrie met weinig mannen kwam, evenwel gaf de HEERE in hun hand een heirkracht van grote menigte, dewijl zij den HEERE, den God hunner vaderen, verlaten hadden; alzo voerden zij de oordelen uit tegen Joas. 25En toen zij van hem getogen waren (want zij lieten hem in grote krankheden), maakten zijn knechten, om het bloed der zonen van den priester Jojada, een verbintenis tegen hem, en zij sloegen hem dood op zijn bed, dat hij stierf; en zij begroeven hem in de stad Davids, maar zij begroeven hem niet in de graven der koningen. 26Dezen nu zijn, die een verbintenis tegen hem maakten: Zabad, de zoon van Simeath, de Ammonietische, en Jozabad, de zoon van Simrith, de Moabietische. 27Aangaande nu zijn zonen, en de grootheid van den last, hem opgelegd, en het gebouw van het huis Gods, ziet, zij zijn geschreven in de historie van het boek der koningen; en zijn zoon Amazia werd koning in zijn plaats.
