1Cieux ! prêtez l’oreille, et je parlerai ; Terre ! écoute les paroles de ma bouche. 2Que mes instructions se répandent comme la pluie, Que ma parole tombe comme la rosée, Comme des ondées sur la verdure, Comme des gouttes d’eau sur l’herbe ! 3Car je proclamerai le nom de l’Éternel. Rendez gloire à notre Dieu ! 4Il est le rocher ; ses œuvres sont parfaites, Car toutes ses voies sont justes ; C’est un Dieu fidèle et sans iniquité, Il est juste et droit. 5S’ils se sont corrompus, à lui n’est point la faute ; La honte est à ses enfants, Race fausse et perverse. 6Est-ce l’Éternel que vous en rendrez responsable, Peuple insensé et dépourvu de sagesse ? N’est-il pas ton père, ton créateur ? N’est-ce pas lui qui t’a formé, et qui t’a affermi ? 7Rappelle à ton souvenir les anciens jours, Passe en revue les années, génération par génération, Interroge ton père, et il te l’apprendra, Tes vieillards, et ils te le diront. 8Quand le Très-Haut donna un héritage aux nations, Quand il sépara les enfants des hommes, Il fixa les limites des peuples D’après le nombre des enfants d’Israël, 9Car la portion de l’Éternel, c’est son peuple, Jacob est la part de son héritage. 10Il l’a trouvé dans une contrée déserte, Dans une solitude aux effroyables hurlements ; Il l’a entouré, il en a pris soin, Il l’a gardé comme la prunelle de son œil, 11Pareil à l’aigle qui éveille sa couvée, Voltige sur ses petits, Déploie ses ailes, les prend, Les porte sur ses plumes. 12L’Éternel seul a conduit son peuple, Et il n’y avait avec lui aucun dieu étranger. 13Il l’a fait monter sur les hauteurs du pays, Et Israël a mangé les fruits des champs ; Il lui a fait sucer le miel du rocher, L’huile qui sort du rocher le plus dur, 14La crème des vaches et le lait des brebis, Avec la graisse des agneaux, Des béliers de Basan et des boucs, Avec la fleur du froment ; Et tu as bu le sang du raisin, le vin. 15Israël est devenu gras, et il a regimbé ; Tu es devenu gras, épais et replet ! -Et il a abandonné Dieu, son créateur, Il a méprisé le rocher de son salut, 16Ils ont excité sa jalousie par des dieux étrangers, Ils l’ont irrité par des abominations ; 17Ils ont sacrifié à des idoles qui ne sont pas Dieu, À des dieux qu’ils ne connaissaient point, Nouveaux, venus depuis peu, Et que vos pères n’avaient pas craints. 18Tu as abandonné le rocher qui t’a fait naître, Et tu as oublié le Dieu qui t’a engendré. 19L’Éternel l’a vu, et il a été irrité, Indigné contre ses fils et ses filles. 20Il a dit : Je leur cacherai ma face, Je verrai quelle sera leur fin ; Car c’est une race perverse, Ce sont des enfants infidèles. 21Ils ont excité ma jalousie par ce qui n’est point Dieu, Ils m’ont irrité par leurs vaines idoles ; Et moi, j’exciterai leur jalousie par ce qui n’est point un peuple, Je les irriterai par une nation insensée. 22Car le feu de ma colère s’est allumé, Et il brûlera jusqu’au fond du séjour des morts ; Il dévorera la terre et ses produits, Il embrasera les fondements des montagnes. 23J’accumulerai sur eux les maux, J’épuiserai mes traits contre eux. 24Ils seront desséchés par la faim, consumés par la fièvre Et par des maladies violentes ; J’enverrai parmi eux la dent des bêtes féroces Et le venin des serpents. 25Au dehors, on périra par l’épée, Et au dedans, par d’effrayantes calamités : Il en sera du jeune homme comme de la jeune fille, De l’enfant à la mamelle comme du vieillard. 26Je voudrais dire : Je les emporterai d’un souffle, Je ferai disparaître leur mémoire d’entre les hommes ! 27Mais je crains les insultes de l’ennemi, Je crains que leurs adversaires ne se méprennent, Et qu’ils ne disent : Notre main a été puissante, Et ce n’est pas l’Éternel qui a fait toutes ces choses. 28C’est une nation qui a perdu le bon sens, Et il n’y a point en eux d’intelligence. 29S’ils étaient sages, voici ce qu’ils comprendraient, Et ils penseraient à ce qui leur arrivera. 30Comment un seul en poursuivrait-il mille, Et deux en mettraient-ils dix mille en fuite, Si leur Rocher ne les avait vendus, Si l’Éternel ne les avait livrés ? 31Car leur rocher n’est pas comme notre Rocher, Nos ennemis en sont juges. 32Mais leur vigne est du plant de Sodome Et du terroir de Gomorrhe ; Leurs raisins sont des raisins empoisonnés, Leurs grappes sont amères ; 33Leur vin, c’est le venin des serpents, C’est le poison cruel des aspics. 34Cela n’est-il pas caché près de moi, Scellé dans mes trésors ? 35À moi la vengeance et la rétribution, Quand leur pied chancellera ! Car le jour de leur malheur est proche, Et ce qui les attend ne tardera pas. 36L’Éternel jugera son peuple ; Mais il aura pitié de ses serviteurs, En voyant que leur force est épuisée, Et qu’il n’y a plus ni esclave ni homme libre. 37Il dira : Où sont leurs dieux, Le rocher qui leur servait de refuge, 38Ces dieux qui mangeaient la graisse de leurs victimes, Qui buvaient le vin de leurs libations ? Qu’ils se lèvent, qu’ils vous secourent, Qu’ils vous couvrent de leur protection ! 39Sachez donc que c’est moi qui suis Dieu, Et qu’il n’y a point de dieu près de moi ; Je fais vivre et je fais mourir, Je blesse et je guéris, Et personne ne délivre de ma main. 40Car je lève ma main vers le ciel, Et je dis : Je vis éternellement ! 41Si j’aiguise l’éclair de mon épée Et si ma main saisit la justice, Je me vengerai de mes adversaires Et je punirai ceux qui me haïssent ; 42Mon épée dévorera leur chair, Et j’enivrerai mes flèches de sang, Du sang des blessés et des captifs, De la tête des chefs de l’ennemi. 43Nations, chantez les louanges de son peuple ! Car l’Éternel venge le sang de ses serviteurs, Il se venge de ses adversaires, Et il fait l’expiation pour son pays, pour son peuple. 44Moïse vint et prononça toutes les paroles de ce cantique en présence du peuple ; Josué, fils de Nun, était avec lui. 45Lorsque Moïse eut achevé de prononcer toutes ces paroles devant tout Israël, 46il leur dit : Prenez à cœur toutes les paroles que je vous conjure aujourd’hui de recommander à vos enfants, afin qu’ils observent et mettent en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi. 47Car ce n’est pas une chose sans importance pour vous ; c’est votre vie, et c’est par là que vous prolongerez vos jours dans le pays dont vous aurez la possession, après avoir passé le Jourdain. 48Ce même jour, l’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit : 49Monte sur cette montagne d’Abarim, sur le mont Nebo, au pays de Moab, vis-à-vis de Jéricho ; et regarde le pays de Canaan que je donne en propriété aux enfants d’Israël. 50Tu mourras sur la montagne où tu vas monter, et tu seras recueilli auprès de ton peuple, comme Aaron, ton frère, est mort sur la montagne de Hor et a été recueilli auprès de son peuple, 51parce que vous avez péché contre moi au milieu des enfants d’Israël, près des eaux de Meriba, à Kadès, dans le désert de Tsin, et que vous ne m’avez point sanctifié au milieu des enfants d’Israël. 52Tu verras le pays devant toi ; mais tu n’entreras point dans le pays que je donne aux enfants d’Israël.
1Give ear, you heavens, and I will speak. Let the earth hear the words of my mouth. 2My doctrine will drop as the rain. My speech will condense as the dew, as the misty rain on the tender grass, as the showers on the herb. 3For I will proclaim Yahweh’s name. Ascribe greatness to our God! 4The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are just. A God of faithfulness who does no wrong, just and right is he. 5They have dealt corruptly with him. They are not his children, because of their defect. They are a perverse and crooked generation. 6Is this the way you repay Yahweh, foolish and unwise people? Isn’t he your father who has bought you? He has made you and established you. 7Remember the days of old. Consider the years of many generations. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you. 8When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the children of men, he set the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the children of Israel. 9For Yahweh’s portion is his people. Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. 10He found him in a desert land, in the waste howling wilderness. He surrounded him. He cared for him. He kept him as the apple of his eye. 11As an eagle that stirs up her nest, that flutters over her young, he spread abroad his wings, he took them, he bore them on his feathers. 12Yahweh alone led him. There was no foreign god with him. 13He made him ride on the high places of the earth. He ate the increase of the field. He caused him to suck honey out of the rock, oil out of the flinty rock; 14butter from the herd, and milk from the flock, with fat of lambs, rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the finest of the wheat. From the blood of the grape, you drank wine. 15But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation. 16They moved him to jealousy with strange gods. They provoked him to anger with abominations. 17They sacrificed to demons, not God, to gods that they didn’t know, to new gods that came up recently, which your fathers didn’t dread. 18Of the Rock who became your father, you are unmindful, and have forgotten God who gave you birth. 19Yahweh saw and abhorred, because of the provocation of his sons and his daughters. 20He said, “I will hide my face from them. I will see what their end will be; for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faithfulness. 21They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God. They have provoked me to anger with their vanities. I will move them to jealousy with those who are not a people. I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. 22For a fire is kindled in my anger, that burns to the lowest Sheol, devours the earth with its increase, and sets the foundations of the mountains on fire. 23“I will heap evils on them. I will spend my arrows on them. 24They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat and bitter destruction. I will send the teeth of animals on them, with the venom of vipers that glide in the dust. 25Outside the sword will bereave, and in the rooms, terror; on both young man and virgin, the nursing infant with the gray-haired man. 26I said that I would scatter them afar. I would make their memory to cease from among men; 27were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, ‘Our hand is exalted, Yahweh has not done all this.’” 28For they are a nation void of counsel. There is no understanding in them. 29Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end! 30How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and Yahweh had delivered them up? 31For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves concede. 32For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, of the fields of Gomorrah. Their grapes are poison grapes. Their clusters are bitter. 33Their wine is the poison of serpents, the cruel venom of asps. 34“Isn’t this laid up in store with me, sealed up among my treasures? 35Vengeance is mine, and recompense, at the time when their foot slides; for the day of their calamity is at hand. Their doom rushes at them.” 36For Yahweh will judge his people, and have compassion on his servants, when he sees that their power is gone; that there is no one remaining, shut up or left at large. 37He will say, “Where are their gods, the rock in which they took refuge; 38which ate the fat of their sacrifices, and drank the wine of their drink offering? Let them rise up and help you! Let them be your protection. 39“See now that I myself am he. There is no god with me. I kill and I make alive. I wound and I heal. There is no one who can deliver out of my hand. 40For I lift up my hand to heaven and declare, as I live forever, 41if I sharpen my glittering sword, my hand grasps it in judgment; I will take vengeance on my adversaries, and will repay those who hate me. 42I will make my arrows drunk with blood. My sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain and the captives, from the head of the leaders of the enemy.” 43Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will avenge the blood of his servants. He will take vengeance on his adversaries, and will make atonement for his land and for his people. 44Moses came and spoke all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he and Joshua the son of Nun. 45Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel. 46He said to them, “Set your heart to all the words which I testify to you this day, which you shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law. 47For it is no vain thing for you; because it is your life, and through this thing you shall prolong your days in the land, where you go over the Jordan to possess it.” 48Yahweh spoke to Moses that same day, saying, 49“Go up into this mountain of Abarim, to Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is across from Jericho; and see the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel for a possession. 50Die on the mountain where you go up, and be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother died on Mount Hor, and was gathered to his people; 51because you trespassed against me in the midst of the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah of Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because you didn’t uphold my holiness in the midst of the children of Israel. 52For you shall see the land from a distance; but you shall not go there into the land which I give the children of Israel.”

God is waarheid, en is geen onrecht; rechtvaardig en recht is Hij. 5Hij heeft het tegen Hem verdorven; het zijn Zijn kinderen niet; de schandvlek is hun; het is een verkeerd en verdraaid geslacht. 6Zult gij dit den HEERE vergelden, gij, dwaas en onwijs volk! Is Hij niet uw Vader, Die u verkregen, Die u gemaakt en u bevestigd heeft? 7Gedenk aan de dagen van ouds; merk op de jaren van elk geslacht; vraag uw vader, die zal het u bekend maken, uw ouden, en zij zullen het u zeggen. 8Toen de Allerhoogste aan de volken de erfenis uitdeelde, toen Hij Adams kinderen vaneen scheidde, heeft Hij de landpalen der volken gesteld naar het getal der kinderen Israels. 9Want des HEEREN deel is Zijn volk, Jakob is het snoer Zijner erve. 10Hij vond hem in een land der woestijn, en in een woeste huilende wildernis; Hij voerde hem rondom, Hij onderwees hem, Hij bewaarde hem als Zijn oogappel. 11Gelijk een arend zijn nest opwekt, over zijn jongen zweeft, zijn vleugelen uitbreidt, ze neemt en ze draagt op zijn vlerken; 12Zo leidde hem de HEERE alleen, en er was geen vreemd god met hem. 13Hij deed hem rijden op de hoogten der aarde, dat hij at de inkomsten des velds; en Hij deed hem honig zuigen uit de steenrots, en olie uit den kei der rots; 14Boter van koeien, en melk van klein vee, met het vet der lammeren en der rammen, die in Bazan weiden, en der bokken, met het vette der nieren van tarwe; en het druivenbloed, reinen wijn, hebt gij gedronken. 15Als nu Jeschurun vet werd, zo sloeg hij achteruit (gij zijt vet, gij zijt dik, ja, met vet overdekt geworden!); en hij liet God varen, Die hem gemaakt heeft, en versmaadde den Rotssteen zijns heils. 16Zij hebben Hem tot ijver verwekt door vreemde goden; door gruwelen hebben zij Hem tot toorn verwekt. 17Zij hebben aan de duivelen geofferd, niet aan God; aan de goden, die zij niet kenden; nieuwe, die van nabij gekomen waren, voor dewelke uw vaders niet geschrikt hebben. 18Den Rotssteen, Die u gegenereerd heeft, hebt gij vergeten; en gij hebt in vergetenis gesteld den God, Die u gebaard heeft. 19Als het de HEERE zag, zo versmaadde Hij hen, uit toornigheid tegen zijn zonen en zijn dochteren. 20En Hij zeide: Ik zal Mijn aangezicht van hen verbergen; Ik zal zien, welk hunlieder einde zal wezen; want zij zijn een gans verkeerd geslacht, kinderen, in welke geen trouw is. 21Zij hebben Mij tot ijver verwekt door hetgeen geen God is; zij hebben Mij tot toorn verwekt door hun ijdelheden; Ik dan zal hen tot ijver verwekken door diegenen, die geen volk zijn; door een dwaas volk zal Ik hen tot toorn verwekken. 22Want een vuur is aangestoken in Mijn toorn, en zal bernen tot in de onderste hel, en zal het land met zijn inkomst verteren, en de gronden der bergen in vlam zetten. 23Ik zal kwaden over hen hopen; Mijn pijlen zal Ik op hen verschieten. 24Uitgeteerd zullen zij zijn van honger, opgegeten van den karbonkel en bitter verderf; en Ik zal de tanden der beesten onder hen schikken, met vurig venijn van slangen des stofs. 25Van buiten zal het zwaard beroven, en uit de binnenkameren de verschrikking; ook den jongeling, ook de jonge dochter, het zuigende kind met den grijzen man. 26Ik zeide: In alle hoeken zoude Ik hen verstrooien; Ik zoude hun gedachtenis van onder de mensen doen ophouden; 27Ten ware, dat Ik de toornigheid des vijands schroomde, dat niet hun tegenpartijen zich vreemd mochten houden; dat zij niet mochten zeggen: Onze hand is hoog geweest; de HEERE heeft dit alles niet gewrocht. 28Want zij zijn een volk, dat door raadslagen verloren gaat, en er is geen verstand in hen. 29O, dat zij wijs waren; zij zouden dit vernemen, zij zouden op hun einde merken. 30Hoe zoude een enige duizend jagen, en twee tien duizend doen vluchten, ten ware, dat hunlieder Rotssteen hen verkocht, en de HEERE hen overgeleverd had? 31Want hun rotssteen is niet gelijk onze Rotssteen, zelfs onze vijanden rechters zijnde. 32Want hun wijnstok is uit den wijnstok van Sodom, en uit de velden van Gomorra; hun wijndruiven zijn vergiftige wijndruiven; zij hebben bittere bezien. 33Hun wijn is vurig drakenvenijn, en een wreed adderenvergift. 34Is dat niet bij Mij opgesloten, verzegeld in Mijn schatten? 35Mijn is de wraak en de vergelding, ten tijde als hunlieder voet zal wankelen; want de dag huns ondergangs is nabij, en de dingen, die hun zullen gebeuren, haasten. 36Want de HEERE zal aan Zijn volk recht doen, en het zal Hem over Zijn knechten berouwen; want Hij zal zien, dat de hand is weggegaan, en de beslotene en verlatene niets is. 37Dan zal Hij zeggen: Waar zijn hun goden; de rotssteen, op welken zij betrouwden? 38Welker slachtofferen vet zij aten, welker drankofferen wijn zij dronken; dat zij opstaan en u helpen, dat er verberging voor u zij. 39Ziet nu, dat Ik, Ik Die ben, en geen God met Mij, Ik dood en maak levend; Ik versla en Ik heel; en er is niemand, die uit Mijn hand redt! 40Want Ik zal Mijn hand naar den hemel opheffen, en Ik zal zeggen: Ik leef in eeuwigheid! 41Indien Ik Mijn glinsterend zwaard wette, en Mijn hand ten gerichte grijpt, zo zal Ik wraak op Mijn tegenpartijen doen wederkeren, en Mijn hateren vergelden. 42Ik zal Mijn pijlen dronken maken van bloed, en Mijn zwaard zal vlees eten; van het bloed des verslagenen en des gevangenen, van het hoofd af zullen er wraken des vijands zijn. 43Juicht, gij heidenen, met Zijn volk! want Hij zal het bloed Zijner knechten wreken; en Hij zal de wraak op Zijn tegenpartijen doen wederkeren, en verzoenen Zijn land en Zijn volk. 44En Mozes kwam, en sprak al de woorden dezes lieds voor de oren des volks, hij en Hosea, de zoon van Nun. 45Als nu Mozes geeindigd had al die woorden tot gans Israel te spreken; 46Zo zeide hij tot hen: Zet uw hart op al de woorden, die ik heden onder ulieden betuige, dat gij ze uw kinderen gebieden zult, dat zij waarnemen te doen al de woorden dezer wet. 47Want dat is geen vergeefs woord voor ulieden; maar het is uw leven; en door ditzelve woord zult gij de dagen verlengen op het land, waar gij over de Jordaan naar toe gaat, om dat te erven. 48Daarna sprak de HEERE tot Mozes, op dienzelfden dag, zeggende: 49Klim op den berg Abarim (deze is de berg Nebo, die in het land van Moab is, die tegenover Jericho is), en zie het land Kanaan, dat Ik den kinderen Israels tot een bezitting geven zal; 50En sterf op dien berg, waarheen gij opklimmen zult, en word vergaderd tot uw volken; gelijk als uw broeder Aaron stierf op den berg Hor, en werd tot zijn volken vergaderd. 51Omdat gijlieden u tegen Mij vergrepen hebt, in het midden der kinderen Israels, aan het twistwater te Kades, in de woestijn Zin; omdat gij Mij niet geheiligd hebt in het midden der kinderen Israels. 52Want van tegenover zult gij dat land zien, maar daarheen niet inkomen, in het land, dat Ik den kinderen Israels geven zal.
