1Lorsque tu iras à la guerre contre tes ennemis, et que tu verras des chevaux et des chars, et un peuple plus nombreux que toi, tu ne les craindras point ; car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, qui t’a fait monter du pays d’Égypte, est avec toi. 2À l’approche du combat, le sacrificateur s’avancera et parlera au peuple. 3Il leur dira : Écoute, Israël ! Vous allez aujourd’hui livrer bataille à vos ennemis. Que votre cœur ne se trouble point ; soyez sans crainte, ne vous effrayez pas, ne vous épouvantez pas devant eux. 4Car l’Éternel, votre Dieu, marche avec vous, pour combattre vos ennemis, pour vous sauver. 5Les officiers parleront ensuite au peuple et diront : Qui est-ce qui a bâti une maison neuve, et ne s’y est point encore établi ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre ne s’y établisse. 6Qui est-ce qui a planté une vigne, et n’en a point encore joui ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre n’en jouisse. 7Qui est-ce qui a fiancé une femme, et ne l’a point encore prise ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, de peur qu’il ne meure dans la bataille et qu’un autre ne la prenne. 8Les officiers continueront à parler au peuple, et diront : Qui est-ce qui a peur et manque de courage ? Qu’il s’en aille et retourne chez lui, afin que ses frères ne se découragent pas comme lui. 9Quand les officiers auront achevé de parler au peuple, ils placeront les chefs des troupes à la tête du peuple. 10Quand tu t’approcheras d’une ville pour l’attaquer, tu lui offriras la paix. 11Si elle accepte la paix et t’ouvre ses portes, tout le peuple qui s’y trouvera te sera tributaire et asservi. 12Si elle n’accepte pas la paix avec toi et qu’elle veuille te faire la guerre, alors tu l’assiégeras. 13Et après que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, l’aura livrée entre tes mains, tu en feras passer tous les mâles au fil de l’épée. 14Mais tu prendras pour toi les femmes, les enfants, le bétail, tout ce qui sera dans la ville, tout son butin, et tu mangeras les dépouilles de tes ennemis que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, t’aura livrés. 15C’est ainsi que tu agiras à l’égard de toutes les villes qui sont très éloignées de toi, et qui ne font point partie des villes de ces nations-ci. 16Mais dans les villes de ces peuples dont l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te donne le pays pour héritage, tu ne laisseras la vie à rien de ce qui respire. 17Car tu dévoueras ces peuples par interdit, les Héthiens, les Amoréens, les Cananéens, les Phéréziens, les Héviens, et les Jébusiens, comme l’Éternel, ton Dieu, te l’a ordonné, 18afin qu’ils ne vous apprennent pas à imiter toutes les abominations qu’ils font pour leurs dieux, et que vous ne péchiez point contre l’Éternel, votre Dieu. 19Si tu fais un long siège pour t’emparer d’une ville avec laquelle tu es en guerre, tu ne détruiras point les arbres en y portant la hache, tu t’en nourriras et tu ne les abattras point ; car l’arbre des champs est-il un homme pour être assiégé par toi ? 20Mais tu pourras détruire et abattre les arbres que tu sauras ne pas être des arbres servant à la nourriture, et en construire des retranchements contre la ville qui te fait la guerre, jusqu’à ce qu’elle succombe.
1When you go out to battle against your enemies, and see horses, chariots, and a people more than you, you shall not be afraid of them; for Yahweh your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. 2It shall be, when you draw near to the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak to the people, 3and shall tell them, “Hear, Israel, you draw near this day to battle against your enemies. Don’t let your heart faint! Don’t be afraid, nor tremble, neither be scared of them; 4for Yahweh your God is he who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.” 5The officers shall speak to the people, saying, “What man is there who has built a new house, and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man dedicate it. 6What man is there who has planted a vineyard, and has not used its fruit? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man use its fruit. 7What man is there who has pledged to be married a wife, and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.” 8The officers shall speak further to the people, and they shall say, “What man is there who is fearful and faint-hearted? Let him go and return to his house, lest his brother’s heart melt as his heart.” 9It shall be, when the officers have finished speaking to the people, that they shall appoint captains of armies at the head of the people. 10When you draw near to a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace to it. 11It shall be, if it makes you answer of peace, and opens to you, then it shall be, that all the people who are found therein shall become forced laborers to you, and shall serve you. 12If it will make no peace with you, but will make war against you, then you shall besiege it. 13When Yahweh your God delivers it into your hand, you shall strike every male of it with the edge of the sword; 14but the women, the little ones, the livestock, and all that is in the city, even all its plunder, you shall take for plunder for yourself. You may use the plunder of your enemies, which Yahweh your God has given you. 15Thus you shall do to all the cities which are very far off from you, which are not of the cities of these nations. 16But of the cities of these peoples, that Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance, you shall save alive nothing that breathes; 17but you shall utterly destroy them: the Hittite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; as Yahweh your God has commanded you; 18that they not teach you to follow all their abominations, which they have done to their gods; so would you sin against Yahweh your God. 19When you shall besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, you shall not destroy its trees by wielding an ax against them; for you may eat of them. You shall not cut them down; for is the tree of the field man, that it should be besieged by you? 20Only the trees that you know are not trees for food, you shall destroy and cut them down. You shall build bulwarks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.
1Wanneer gij zult uittrekken tot den strijd tegen uw vijanden, en zult zien paarden en wagenen, een volk, meerder dan gij, zo zult gij voor hen niet vrezen; want de HEERE, uw God, is met u, Die u uit Egypteland heeft opgevoerd. 2En het zal geschieden, als gijlieden tot den strijd nadert, zo zal de priester toetreden, en tot het volk spreken. 3En tot hen zeggen: Hoort, Israel! gijlieden zijt heden na aan den strijd tegen uw vijanden; uw hart worde niet week, vreest niet, en beeft niet, en verschrikt niet voor hun aangezicht. 4Want het is de HEERE, uw God, Die met u gaat, om voor u te strijden tegen uw vijanden, om u te verlossen. 5Dan zullen de ambtlieden tot het volk spreken, zeggende: Wie is de man, die een nieuw huis heeft gebouwd, en het niet heeft ingewijd? Die ga henen en kere weder naar zijn huis; opdat het hart zijner broederen niet smelte, gelijk zijn hart. 9En het zal geschieden, als die ambtlieden geeindigd zullen hebben te spreken tot het volk, zo zullen zij oversten der heiren aan de spits des volks bestellen. 10Wanneer gij nadert tot een stad om tegen haar te strijden, zo zult gij haar den vrede toeroepen. 11En het zal geschieden, indien zij u vrede zal antwoorden, en u opendoen, zo zal al het volk, dat daarin gevonden wordt, u cijnsbaar zijn, en u dienen. 12Doch zo zij geen vrede met u zal maken, maar krijg tegen u voeren, zo zult gij haar belegeren. 13En de HEERE, uw God, zal haar in uw hand geven; en gij zult alles, wat mannelijk daarin is, slaan met de scherpte des zwaards; 14Behalve de vrouwen, en de kinderkens, en de beesten, en al wat in de stad zijn zal, al haar buit zult gij voor u roven; en gij zult eten den buit uwer vijanden, dien u de HEERE, uw God, gegeven heeft. 15Alzo zult gij aan alle steden doen, die zeer verre van u zijn, die niet zijn van de steden dezer volken. 16Maar van de steden dezer volken, die u de HEERE, uw God, ten erve geeft, zult gij niets laten leven, dat adem heeft. 17Maar gij zult ze ganselijk verbannen: de Hethieten, en de Amorieten, en de Kanaanieten, en de Ferezieten, de Hevieten, en de Jebusieten, gelijk als u de HEERE, uw God, geboden heeft; 18Opdat zij ulieden niet leren te doen naar al hun gruwelen, die zij hun goden gedaan hebben, en gij zondigt tegen den HEERE, uw God. 19Wanneer gij een stad vele dagen zult belegeren, strijdende tegen haar, om die in te nemen, zo zult gij haar geboomte niet verderven, de bijl daaraan drijvende; want gij zult daarvan eten; daarom zult gij dat niet afhouwen (want het geboomte van het veld is des mensen spijze), opdat het voor uw aangezicht kome tot een bolwerk. 20Maar het geboomte, hetwelk gij kennen zult, dat het geen geboomte ter spijze is, dat zult gij verderven en afhouwen; en gij zult een bolwerk bouwen tegen deze stad, dewelke tegen u krijg voert, totdat zij ten onderga.
