1Voici les paroles de l’alliance que l’Éternel ordonna à Moïse de traiter avec les enfants d’Israël au pays de Moab, outre l’alliance qu’il avait traitée avec eux à Horeb. 2Moïse convoqua tout Israël, et leur dit : Vous avez vu tout ce que l’Éternel a fait sous vos yeux, dans le pays d’Égypte, à Pharaon, à tous ses serviteurs, et à tout son pays, 3les grandes épreuves que tes yeux ont vues, ces miracles et ces grands prodiges. 4Mais, jusqu’à ce jour, l’Éternel ne vous a pas donné un cœur pour comprendre, des yeux pour voir, des oreilles pour entendre. 5Je t’ai conduit pendant quarante années dans le désert ; tes vêtements ne se sont point usés sur toi, et ton soulier ne s’est point usé à ton pied ; 6vous n’avez point mangé de pain, et vous n’avez bu ni vin ni liqueur forte, afin que vous connussiez que je suis l’Éternel, votre Dieu. 7Vous êtes arrivés dans ce lieu ; Sihon, roi de Hesbon, et Og, roi de Basan, sont sortis à notre rencontre, pour nous combattre, et nous les avons battus. 8Nous avons pris leur pays, et nous l’avons donné en propriété aux Rubénites, aux Gadites et à la moitié de la tribu des Manassites. 9Vous observerez donc les paroles de cette alliance, et vous les mettrez en pratique, afin de réussir dans tout ce que vous ferez. 10Vous vous présentez aujourd’hui devant l’Éternel, votre Dieu, vous tous, vos chefs de tribus, vos anciens, vos officiers, tous les hommes d’Israël, 11vos enfants, vos femmes, et l’étranger qui est au milieu de ton camp, depuis celui qui coupe ton bois jusqu’à celui qui puise ton eau. 12Tu te présentes pour entrer dans l’alliance de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, dans cette alliance contractée avec serment, et que l’Éternel, ton Dieu, traite en ce jour avec toi, 13afin de t’établir aujourd’hui pour son peuple et d’être lui-même ton Dieu, comme il te l’a dit, et comme il l’a juré à tes pères, Abraham, Isaac et Jacob. 14Ce n’est point avec vous seuls que je traite cette alliance, cette alliance contractée avec serment. 15Mais c’est avec ceux qui sont ici parmi nous, présents en ce jour devant l’Éternel, notre Dieu, et avec ceux qui ne sont point ici parmi nous en ce jour. 16Vous savez de quelle manière nous avons habité dans le pays d’Égypte, et comment nous avons passé au milieu des nations que vous avez traversées. 17Vous avez vu leurs abominations et leurs idoles, le bois et la pierre, l’argent et l’or, qui sont chez elles. 18Qu’il n’y ait parmi vous ni homme, ni femme, ni famille, ni tribu, dont le cœur se détourne aujourd’hui de l’Éternel, notre Dieu, pour aller servir les dieux de ces nations-là. Qu’il n’y ait point parmi vous de racine qui produise du poison et de l’absinthe. 19Que personne, après avoir entendu les paroles de cette alliance contractée avec serment, ne se glorifie dans son cœur et ne dise : J’aurai la paix, quand même je suivrai les penchants de mon cœur, et que j’ajouterai l’ivresse à la soif. 20L’Éternel ne voudra point lui pardonner. Mais alors la colère et la jalousie de l’Éternel s’enflammeront contre cet homme, toutes les malédictions écrites dans ce livre reposeront sur lui, et l’Éternel effacera son nom de dessous les cieux. 21L’Éternel le séparera, pour son malheur, de toutes les tribus d’Israël, selon toutes les malédictions de l’alliance écrite dans ce livre de la loi. 22Les générations à venir, vos enfants qui naîtront après vous et l’étranger qui viendra d’une terre lointaine, -à la vue des plaies et des maladies dont l’Éternel aura frappé ce pays, à la vue du soufre, du sel, 23de l’embrasement de toute la contrée, où il n’y aura ni semence, ni produit, ni aucune herbe qui croisse, comme au bouleversement de Sodome, de Gomorrhe, d’Adma et de Tseboïm, que l’Éternel détruisit dans sa colère et dans sa fureur, - 24toutes les nations diront : Pourquoi l’Éternel a-t-il ainsi traité ce pays ? pourquoi cette ardente, cette grande colère ? 25Et l’on répondra : C’est parce qu’ils ont abandonné l’alliance contractée avec eux par l’Éternel, le Dieu de leurs pères, lorsqu’il les fit sortir du pays d’Égypte ; 26c’est parce qu’ils sont allés servir d’autres dieux et se prosterner devant eux, des dieux qu’ils ne connaissaient point et que l’Éternel ne leur avait point donnés en partage. 27Alors la colère de l’Éternel s’est enflammée contre ce pays, et il a fait venir sur lui toutes les malédictions écrites dans ce livre. 28L’Éternel les a arrachés de leur pays avec colère, avec fureur, avec une grande indignation, et il les a jetés sur un autre pays, comme on le voit aujourd’hui. 29Les choses cachées sont à l’Éternel, notre Dieu ; les choses révélées sont à nous et à nos enfants, à perpétuité, afin que nous mettions en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi.
1These are the words of the covenant which Yahweh commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, in addition to the covenant which he made with them in Horeb. 2Moses called to all Israel, and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that Yahweh did in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land; 3the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, and those great wonders. 4But Yahweh has not given you a heart to know, eyes to see, and ears to hear, to this day. 5I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not grown old on you, and your shoes have not grown old on your feet. 6You have not eaten bread, neither have you drunk wine or strong drink; that you may know that I am Yahweh your God. 7When you came to this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us to battle, and we struck them. 8We took their land, and gave it for an inheritance to the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites. 9Therefore keep the words of this covenant and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do. 10All of you stand this day in the presence of Yahweh your God; your heads, your tribes, your elders, and your officers, even all the men of Israel, 11your little ones, your wives, and the foreigners who are in the midst of your camps, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water; 12that you may enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God, and into his oath, which Yahweh your God makes with you this day; 13that he may establish you this day as his people, and that he may be your God, as he spoke to you, and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 14Neither do I make this covenant and this oath with you only, 15but with those who stand here with us this day before Yahweh our God, and also with those who are not here with us this day 16(for you know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed; 17and you have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them); 18lest there should be among you man, woman, family, or tribe whose heart turns away this day from Yahweh our God, to go to serve the gods of those nations; lest there should be among you a root that produces bitter poison; 19and it happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he bless himself in his heart, saying, “I shall have peace, though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart, to destroy the moist with the dry.” 20Yahweh will not pardon him, but then Yahweh’s anger and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and all of the curse that is written in this book will fall on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under the sky. 21Yahweh will set him apart for evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all of the curses of the covenant that is written in this book of the law. 22The generation to come, your children who will rise up after you, and the foreigner who will come from a far land, will say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses with which Yahweh has made it sick; 23and that all of its land is sulfur, salt, and burning, that it is not sown, doesn’t produce, nor does any grass grow in it, like the overthrow of Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which Yahweh overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath; 24even all the nations will say, “Why has Yahweh done thus to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?” 25Then men will say, “Because they abandoned the covenant of Yahweh, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 26and went and served other gods, and worshiped them, gods that they didn’t know, and that he had not given to them. 27Therefore Yahweh’s anger was kindled against this land, to bring on it all the curses that are written in this book. 28Yahweh rooted them out of their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and thrust them into another land, as at this day.” 29The secret things belong to Yahweh our God; but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.
1Dit zijn de woorden des verbonds, dat de HEERE Mozes geboden heeft te maken met de kinderen Israels, in het land van Moab, boven het verbond, dat Hij met hen gemaakt had aan Horeb. 2En Mozes riep gans Israel, en zeide tot hen: Gij hebt gezien al wat de HEERE in Egypteland voor uw ogen gedaan heeft, aan Farao, en aan al zijn knechten, en aan zijn land; 3De grote verzoekingen, die uw ogen gezien hebben, diezelve tekenen en grote wonderen. 4Maar de HEERE heeft ulieden niet gegeven een hart om te verstaan, noch ogen om te zien, noch oren om te horen, tot op dezen dag. 5En Ik heb ulieden veertig jaren doen wandelen in de woestijn; uw klederen zijn aan u niet verouderd, en uw schoen is niet verouderd aan uw voet. 6Brood hebt gij niet gegeten, en wijn en sterken drank hebt gij niet gedronken; opdat gij wistet, dat Ik de HEERE, uw God, ben. 7Toen gij nu kwaamt aan deze plaats, toog Sihon, de koning van Hesbon, uit, en Og, de koning van Bazan, ons tegemoet, ten strijde; en wij sloegen hen. 8En wij hebben hun land ingenomen, en dat ten erve gegeven aan de Rubenieten en Gadieten, mitsgaders aan den halven stam der Manassieten. 9Houdt dan de woorden dezes verbonds, en doet ze; opdat gij verstandelijk handelt in alles, wat gij doen zult. 10Gij staat heden allen voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, uws Gods: uw hoofden uwer stammen, uw oudsten, en uw ambtlieden, alle man van Israel; 11Uw kinderkens, uw vrouwen, en uw vreemdeling, die in het midden van uw leger is, van uw houthouwer tot uw waterputter toe; 12Om over te gaan in het verbond des HEEREN, uws Gods, en in Zijn vloek, hetwelk de HEERE, uw God, heden met u maakt; 13Opdat Hij u heden Zichzelven tot een volk bevestige, en Hij u tot een God zij, gelijk als Hij tot u gesproken heeft, en gelijk als Hij uw vaderen, Abraham, Izak en Jakob, gezworen heeft. 14En niet met ulieden alleen maak ik dit verbond en dezen vloek; 15Maar met dengene, die heden hier bij ons voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, onzes Gods, staat; en met dengene, die hier heden bij ons niet is. 16Want gij weet, hoe wij in Egypteland gewoond hebben, en hoe wij doorgetogen zijn door het midden der volken, die gij doorgetogen zijt. 17En gij hebt gezien hun verfoeiselen, en hun drekgoden, hout en steen, zilver en goud, die bij hen waren. 18Dat onder ulieden niet zij een man, of vrouw, of huisgezin, of stam, die zijn hart heden wende van den HEERE, onzen God, om te gaan dienen de goden dezer volken; dat onder ulieden niet zij een wortel, die gal en alsem drage; 19En het geschiede, als hij de woorden dezes vloeks hoort, dat hij zichzelven zegene in zijn hart, zeggende: Ik zal vrede hebben, wanneer ik schoon naar mijns harten goeddunken zal wandelen, om den dronkene te doen tot den dorstige. 20De HEERE zal hem niet willen vergeven; maar alsdan zal des HEEREN toorn en ijver roken over denzelven man, en al de vloek, die in dit boek geschreven is, zal op hem liggen; en de HEERE zal zijn naam van onder den hemel uitdelgen. 21En de HEERE zal hem ten kwade afscheiden van al de stammen Israels, naar alle vloeken des verbonds, dat in het boek dezer wet geschreven is. 22Dan zal zeggen het navolgend geslacht, uw kinderen, die na ulieden opstaan zullen, en de vreemde, die uit verren lande komen zal, als zij zullen zien de plagen dezes lands en deszelfs krankheden, waarmede de HEERE het gekrenkt heeft; 23Dat zijn ganse aarde zij zwavel en zout der verbranding; die niet bezaaid zal zijn, en geen spruit zal voortgebracht hebben, noch enig kruid daarin zal opgekomen zijn; gelijk de omkering van Sodom en Gomorra, Adama en Zeboim, die de HEERE heeft omgekeerd in Zijn toorn en in Zijn grimmigheid; 24En alle volken zullen zeggen: Waarom heeft de HEERE aan dit land alzo gedaan? Wat is de ontsteking van dezen groten toorn? 25Dan zal men zeggen: Omdat zij het verbond des HEEREN, des Gods hunner vaderen, hebben verlaten, dat Hij met hen gemaakt had, als Hij hen uit Egypteland uitvoerde; 26En zij heengegaan zijn, en andere goden gediend en zich voor die gebogen hebben; goden, die hen niet gekend hadden, en geen van welke hun iets medegedeeld had; 27Daarom is de toorn des HEEREN ontstoken tegen dit land, om daarover te brengen al dezen vloek, die in dit boek geschreven is. 28En de HEERE heeft hen uit hun land uitgetrokken, in toorn, en in grimmigheid, en in grote verbolgenheid; en Hij heeft hen verworpen in een ander land, gelijk het is te dezen dage. 29De verborgene dingen zijn voor den HEERE, onzen God; maar de geopenbaarde zijn voor ons en voor onze kinderen, tot in eeuwigheid, om te doen al de woorden dezer wet.
