1Moïse adressa encore ces paroles à tout Israël : 2Aujourd’hui, leur dit-il, je suis âgé de cent vingt ans, je ne pourrai plus sortir et entrer, et l’Éternel m’a dit : Tu ne passeras pas ce Jourdain. 3L’Éternel, ton Dieu, marchera lui-même devant toi, il détruira ces nations devant toi, et tu t’en rendras maître. Josué marchera aussi devant toi, comme l’Éternel l’a dit. 4L’Éternel traitera ces nations comme il a traité Sihon et Og, rois des Amoréens, qu’il a détruits avec leur pays. 5L’Éternel vous les livrera, et vous agirez à leur égard selon tous les ordres que je vous ai donnés. 6Fortifiez-vous et ayez du courage ! Ne craignez point et ne soyez point effrayés devant eux ; car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, marchera lui-même avec toi, il ne te délaissera point, il ne t’abandonnera point. 7Moïse appela Josué, et lui dit en présence de tout Israël : Fortifie-toi et prends courage, car tu entreras avec ce peuple dans le pays que l’Éternel a juré à leurs pères de leur donner, et c’est toi qui les en mettras en possession. 8L’Éternel marchera lui-même devant toi, il sera lui-même avec toi, il ne te délaissera point, il ne t’abandonnera point ; ne crains point, et ne t’effraie point. 9Moïse écrivit cette loi, et il la remit aux sacrificateurs, fils de Lévi, qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel, et à tous les anciens d’Israël. 10Moïse leur donna cet ordre : Tous les sept ans, à l’époque de l’année du relâche, à la fête des tabernacles, 11quand tout Israël viendra se présenter devant l’Éternel, ton Dieu, dans le lieu qu’il choisira, tu liras cette loi devant tout Israël, en leur présence. 12Tu rassembleras le peuple, les hommes, les femmes, les enfants, et l’étranger qui sera dans tes portes, afin qu’ils t’entendent, et afin qu’ils apprennent à craindre l’Éternel, votre Dieu, à observer et à mettre en pratique toutes les paroles de cette loi. 13Et leurs enfants qui ne la connaîtront pas l’entendront, et ils apprendront à craindre l’Éternel, votre Dieu, tout le temps que vous vivrez dans le pays dont vous prendrez possession, après avoir passé le Jourdain. 14L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Voici, le moment approche où tu vas mourir. Appelle Josué, et présentez-vous dans la tente d’assignation. Je lui donnerai mes ordres. Moïse et Josué allèrent se présenter dans la tente d’assignation. 15Et l’Éternel apparut dans la tente dans une colonne de nuée ; et la colonne de nuée s’arrêta à l’entrée de la tente. 16L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Voici, tu vas être couché avec tes pères. Et ce peuple se lèvera, et se prostituera après les dieux étrangers du pays au milieu duquel il entre. Il m’abandonnera, et il violera mon alliance, que j’ai traitée avec lui. 17En ce jour-là, ma colère s’enflammera contre lui. Je les abandonnerai, et je leur cacherai ma face. Il sera dévoré, il sera la proie d’une multitude de maux et d’afflictions, et alors il dira : N’est-ce point parce que mon Dieu n’est pas au milieu de moi que ces maux m’ont atteint ? 18Et moi, je cacherai ma face en ce jour-là, à cause de tout le mal qu’il aura fait, en se tournant vers d’autres dieux. 19Maintenant, écrivez ce cantique. Enseigne-le aux enfants d’Israël, mets-le dans leur bouche, et que ce cantique me serve de témoin contre les enfants d’Israël. 20Car je mènerai ce peuple dans le pays que j’ai juré à ses pères de lui donner, pays où coulent le lait et le miel ; il mangera, se rassasiera, s’engraissera ; puis il se tournera vers d’autres dieux et les servira, il me méprisera et violera mon alliance ; 21quand alors il sera atteint par une multitude de maux et d’afflictions, ce cantique, qui ne sera point oublié et que la postérité aura dans la bouche, déposera comme témoin contre ce peuple. Je connais, en effet, ses dispositions, qui déjà se manifestent aujourd’hui, avant même que je l’aie fait entrer dans le pays que j’ai juré de lui donner. 22En ce jour-là, Moïse écrivit ce cantique, et il l’enseigna aux enfants d’Israël. 23L’Éternel donna ses ordres à Josué, fils de Nun. Il dit : Fortifie-toi et prends courage, car c’est toi qui feras entrer les enfants d’Israël dans le pays que j’ai juré de leur donner ; et je serai moi-même avec toi. 24Lorsque Moïse eut complètement achevé d’écrire dans un livre les paroles de cette loi, 25il donna cet ordre aux Lévites qui portaient l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel : 26Prenez ce livre de la loi, et mettez-le à côté de l’arche de l’alliance de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, et il sera là comme témoin contre toi. 27Car je connais ton esprit de rébellion et la roideur de ton cou. Si vous êtes rebelles contre l’Éternel pendant que je suis encore vivant au milieu de vous, combien plus le serez-vous après ma mort ! 28Assemblez devant moi tous les anciens de vos tribus et vos officiers ; je dirai ces paroles en leur présence, et je prendrai à témoin contre eux le ciel et la terre. 29Car je sais qu’après ma mort vous vous corromprez, et que vous vous détournerez de la voie que je vous ai prescrite ; et le malheur finira par vous atteindre, quand vous ferez ce qui est mal aux yeux de l’Éternel, au point de l’irriter par l’œuvre de vos mains. 30Moïse prononça dans leur entier les paroles de ce cantique, en présence de toute l’assemblée d’Israël :
1Moses went and spoke these words to all Israel. 2He said to them, “I am one hundred twenty years old this day. I can no more go out and come in. Yahweh has said to me, ‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’ 3Yahweh your God himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua will go over before you, as Yahweh has spoken. 4Yahweh will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land; whom he destroyed. 5Yahweh will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandment which I have commanded you. 6Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for Yahweh your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.” 7Moses called to Joshua, and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which Yahweh has sworn to their fathers to give them; and you shall cause them to inherit it. 8Yahweh himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.” 9Moses wrote this law, and delivered it to the priests the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel. 10Moses commanded them, saying, “At the end of every seven years, in the set time of the year of release, in the feast of tents, 11when all Israel has come to appear before Yahweh your God in the place which he will choose, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12Assemble the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and the foreigners who are within your gates, that they may hear, and that they may learn, and fear Yahweh your God, and observe to do all the words of this law; 13and that their children, who have not known, may hear, and learn to fear Yahweh your God, as long as you live in the land where you go over the Jordan to possess it.” 14Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, your days approach that you must die. Call Joshua, and present yourselves in the Tent of Meeting, that I may commission him.” Moses and Joshua went, and presented themselves in the Tent of Meeting. 15Yahweh appeared in the Tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood over the Tent’s door. 16Yahweh said to Moses, “Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers. This people will rise up, and play the prostitute after the strange gods of the land, where they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. 17Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall come on them; so that they will say in that day, ‘Haven’t these evils come on us because our God is not among us?’ 18I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they have done, in that they have turned to other gods. 19“Now therefore write this song for yourselves, and teach it to the children of Israel. Put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. 20For when I have brought them into the land which I swore to their fathers, flowing with milk and honey, and they have eaten and filled themselves, and grown fat; then they will turn to other gods, and serve them, and despise me, and break my covenant. 21It will happen, when many evils and troubles have come on them, that this song will testify before them as a witness; for it will not be forgotten out of the mouths of their descendants; for I know their ways and what they are doing this day, before I have brought them into the land which I swore.” 22So Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel. 23He commissioned Joshua the son of Nun, and said, “Be strong and courageous; for you shall bring the children of Israel into the land which I swore to them. I will be with you.” 24When Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, saying, 26“Take this book of the law, and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of Yahweh your God, that it may be there for a witness against you. 27For I know your rebellion, and your stiff neck. Behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. How much more after my death? 28Assemble to me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29For I know that after my death you will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will happen to you in the latter days; because you will do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.” 30Moses spoke in the ears of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song, until they were finished.

Jozua zal voor uw aangezicht overgaan, gelijk als de HEERE gesproken heeft. 4En de HEERE zal hun doen, gelijk als Hij aan Sihon en Og, koningen der Amorieten, en aan hun land, gedaan heeft, die Hij verdelgd heeft. 5Wanneer hen nu de HEERE voor uw aangezicht zal gegeven hebben, dan zult gij hun doen naar alle gebod, dat ik ulieden geboden heb. 6Weest sterk en hebt goeden moed, en vreest niet, en verschrikt niet voor hun aangezicht; want het is de HEERE, uw God, Die met u gaat; Hij zal u niet begeven, noch u verlaten. 7En Mozes riep Jozua, en zeide tot hem voor de ogen van gans Israel: Wees sterk en heb goeden moed, want gij zult met dit volk ingaan in het land dat de HEERE hun vaderen gezworen heeft, hun te zullen geven; en gij zult het hun doen erven. 8De HEERE nu is Degene, Die voor uw aangezicht gaat; Die zal met u zijn; Hij zal u niet begeven, noch u verlaten; vrees niet, en ontzet u niet. 9En Mozes schreef deze wet, en gaf ze aan de priesteren, de zonen van Levi, die de ark des verbonds des HEEREN droegen, en aan alle oudsten van Israel. 10En Mozes gebood hun, zeggende: Ten einde van zeven jaren, op den gezetten tijd van het jaar der vrijlating, op het feest der loofhutten. 11Als gans Israel zal komen, om te verschijnen voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, uws Gods, in de plaats, die Hij zal verkoren hebben, zult gij deze wet voor gans Israel uitroepen, voor hun oren; 12Vergadert het volk, de mannen, en de vrouwen, en de kinderen, en uw vreemdelingen, die in uw poorten zijn; opdat zij horen, en opdat zij leren, en vrezen den HEERE, uw God, en waarnemen te doen alle woorden dezer wet. 13En dat hun kinderen, die het niet geweten hebben, horen en leren, om te vrezen den HEERE, uw God, al de dagen, die gij leeft op het land, naar hetwelk gij over de Jordaan zijt heengaande, om dat te erven. 14En de HEERE zeide tot Mozes: Zie, uw dagen zijn genaderd, om te sterven; roep Jozua, en stelt ulieden in de tent der samenkomst, dat Ik hem bevel geve. Zo ging Mozes, en Jozua, en zij stelden zich in de tent der samenkomst. 15Toen verscheen de HEERE in de tent, in de wolkkolom; en de wolkkolom stond boven de deur der tent. 16En de HEERE zeide tot Mozes: Zie, gij zult slapen met uw vaderen; en dit volk zal opstaan, en nahoereren de goden der vreemden van dat land, waar het naar toe gaat, in het midden van hetzelve; en het zal Mij verlaten en vernietigen Mijn verbond, dat Ik met hetzelve gemaakt heb. 17Zo zal Mijn toorn te dien dage tegen hetzelve ontsteken, en Ik zal hen verlaten, en Mijn aangezicht van hen verbergen, dat zij ter spijze zijn, en vele kwaden en benauwdheden zullen het treffen; dat het te dien dage zal zeggen: Hebben mij deze kwaden niet getroffen, omdat mijn God in het midden van mij niet is? 18Ik dan zal Mijn aangezicht te dien dage ganselijk verbergen, om al het kwaad, dat het gedaan heeft; want het heeft zich gewend tot andere goden. 19En nu, schrijft ulieden dit lied, en leert het den kinderen Israels; legt het in hun mond; opdat dit lied Mij ten getuige zij tegen de kinderen Israels. 20Want Ik zal dit volk inbrengen in het land, dat Ik zijn vaderen gezworen heb, vloeiende van melk en honig, en het zal eten, en verzadigd, en vet worden; dan zal het zich wenden tot andere goden, en hen dienen, en zij zullen Mij tergen, en Mijn verbond vernietigen. 21En het zal geschieden, wanneer vele kwaden en benauwdheden hetzelve zullen treffen, dan zal dit lied voor zijn aangezicht antwoorden tot getuige; want het zal uit den mond zijns zaads niet vergeten worden; dewijl Ik weet zijn gedichtsel dat het heden maakt, aleer Ik het inbreng in het land, dat Ik gezworen heb. 22Zo schreef Mozes dit lied te dien dage, en hij leerde het den kinderen Israels. 23En Hij gebood Jozua, den zoon van Nun, en zeide: Zijt sterk en heb goeden moed, want gij zult de kinderen Israels inbrengen in het land, dat Ik hun gezworen heb; en Ik zal met u zijn. 24En het geschiedde, als Mozes voleind had de woorden dezer wet te schrijven in een boek, totdat zij voltrokken waren; 25Zo gebood Mozes den Levieten, die de ark des verbonds des HEEREN droegen, zeggende: 26Neemt dit wetboek, en legt het aan de zijde van de ark des verbonds des HEEREN, uws Gods, dat het aldaar zij ten getuige tegen u. 27Want ik ken uw wederspannigheid, en uw harden nek. Ziet, terwijl ik nog heden met ulieden leve, zijt gij wederspannig geweest tegen den HEERE; hoe veel te meer na mijn dood! 28Vergadert tot mij al de oudsten uwer stammen, en uw ambtlieden; dat ik voor hun oren deze woorden spreke, en tegen hen den hemel en de aarde tot getuigen neme. 29Want ik weet, dat gij het na mijn dood zekerlijk zult verderven, en afwijken van den weg, dien ik u geboden heb; dan zal u dit kwaad in het laatste der dagen ontmoeten, wanneer gij zult gedaan hebben, dat kwaad is in de ogen des HEEREN, om Hem door het werk uwer handen tot toorn te verwekken. 30Toen sprak Mozes, voor de oren der ganse gemeente van Israel, de woorden dezes lieds, totdat zij voltrokken waren.
