1Voici les commandements, les lois et les ordonnances que l’Éternel, votre Dieu, a commandé de vous enseigner, afin que vous les mettiez en pratique dans le pays dont vous allez prendre possession ; 2afin que tu craignes l’Éternel, ton Dieu, en observant, tous les jours de ta vie, toi, ton fils, et le fils de ton fils, toutes ses lois et tous ses commandements que je te prescris, et afin que tes jours soient prolongés. 3Tu les écouteras donc, Israël, et tu auras soin de les mettre en pratique, afin que tu sois heureux et que vous multipliiez beaucoup, comme te l’a dit l’Éternel, le Dieu de tes pères, en te promettant un pays où coulent le lait et le miel. 4Écoute, Israël ! l’Éternel, notre Dieu, est le seul Éternel. 5Tu aimeras l’Éternel, ton Dieu, de tout ton cœur, de toute ton âme et de toute ta force. 6Et ces commandements, que je te donne aujourd’hui, seront dans ton cœur. 7Tu les inculqueras à tes enfants, et tu en parleras quand tu seras dans ta maison, quand tu iras en voyage, quand tu te coucheras et quand tu te lèveras. 8Tu les lieras comme un signe sur tes mains, et ils seront comme des fronteaux entre tes yeux. 9Tu les écriras sur les poteaux de ta maison et sur tes portes. 10L’Éternel, ton Dieu, te fera entrer dans le pays qu’il a juré à tes pères, à Abraham, à Isaac et à Jacob, de te donner. Tu posséderas de grandes et bonnes villes que tu n’as point bâties, 11des maisons qui sont pleines de toutes sortes de biens et que tu n’as point remplies, des citernes creusées que tu n’as point creusées, des vignes et des oliviers que tu n’as point plantés. 12Lorsque tu mangeras et te rassasieras, garde-toi d’oublier l’Éternel, qui t’a fait sortir du pays d’Égypte, de la maison de servitude. 13Tu craindras l’Éternel, ton Dieu, tu le serviras, et tu jureras par son nom. 14Vous n’irez point après d’autres dieux, d’entre les dieux des peuples qui sont autour de vous ; 15car l’Éternel, ton Dieu, est un Dieu jaloux au milieu de toi. La colère de l’Éternel, ton Dieu, s’enflammerait contre toi, et il t’exterminerait de dessus la terre. 16Vous ne tenterez point l’Éternel, votre Dieu, comme vous l’avez tenté à Massa. 17Mais vous observerez les commandements de l’Éternel, votre Dieu, ses ordonnances et ses lois qu’il vous a prescrites. 18Tu feras ce qui est droit et ce qui est bien aux yeux de l’Éternel, afin que tu sois heureux, et que tu entres en possession du bon pays que l’Éternel a juré à tes pères de te donner, 19après qu’il aura chassé tous tes ennemis devant toi, comme l’Éternel l’a dit. 20Lorsque ton fils te demandera un jour : Que signifient ces préceptes, ces lois et ces ordonnances, que l’Éternel, notre Dieu, vous a prescrits ? 21tu diras à ton fils : Nous étions esclaves de Pharaon en Égypte, et l’Éternel nous a fait sortir de l’Égypte par sa main puissante. 22L’Éternel a opéré, sous nos yeux, des miracles et des prodiges, grands et désastreux, contre l’Égypte, contre Pharaon et contre toute sa maison ; 23et il nous a fait sortir de là, pour nous amener dans le pays qu’il avait juré à nos pères de nous donner. 24L’Éternel nous a commandé de mettre en pratique toutes ces lois, et de craindre l’Éternel, notre Dieu, afin que nous fussions toujours heureux, et qu’il nous conservât la vie, comme il le fait aujourd’hui. 25Nous aurons la justice en partage, si nous mettons soigneusement en pratique tous ces commandements devant l’Éternel, notre Dieu, comme il nous l’a ordonné.
1Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Yahweh your God commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it; 2that you might fear Yahweh your God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you; you, and your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged. 3Hear therefore, Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. 4Hear, Israel: Yahweh is our God. Yahweh is one. 5You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your might. 6These words, which I command you this day, shall be on your heart; 7and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up. 8You shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. 9You shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates. 10It shall be, when Yahweh your God brings you into the land which he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give you, great and goodly cities, which you didn’t build, 11and houses full of all good things, which you didn’t fill, and cisterns dug out, which you didn’t dig, vineyards and olive trees, which you didn’t plant, and you shall eat and be full; 12then beware lest you forget Yahweh, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 13You shall fear Yahweh your God; and you shall serve him, and shall swear by his name. 14You shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples who are around you; 15for Yahweh your God in your midst is a jealous God; lest the anger of Yahweh your God be kindled against you, and he destroy you from off the face of the earth. 16You shall not tempt Yahweh your God, as you tempted him in Massah. 17You shall diligently keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he has commanded you. 18You shall do that which is right and good in the sight of Yahweh; that it may be well with you, and that you may go in and possess the good land which Yahweh swore to your fathers, 19to thrust out all your enemies from before you, as Yahweh has spoken. 20When your son asks you in time to come, saying, “What do the testimonies, the statutes, and the ordinances, which Yahweh our God has commanded you mean?” 21then you shall tell your son, “We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. Yahweh brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand; 22and Yahweh showed great and awesome signs and wonders on Egypt, on Pharaoh, and on all his house, before our eyes; 23and he brought us out from there, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he swore to our fathers. 24Yahweh commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear Yahweh our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as at this day. 25It shall be righteousness to us, if we observe to do all this commandment before Yahweh our God, as he has commanded us.”
1Dit zijn dan de geboden, de inzettingen en de rechten, die de HEERE, uw God, geboden heeft om u te leren; opdat gij ze doet in het land, naar hetwelk gij heentrekt, om dat erfelijk te bezitten; 2Opdat gij den HEERE, uw God, vrezet, om te houden al Zijn inzettingen, en Zijn geboden, die ik u gebiede; gij, en uw kind, en kindskind, al de dagen uws levens; en opdat uw dagen verlengd worden. 3Hoor dan, Israel! en neem waar, dat gij ze doet, opdat het u welga, en opdat gij zeer vermenigvuldigdet (gelijk als u de HEERE, uwer vaderen God, gesproken heeft) in het land, dat van melk en honig is vloeiende. 4Hoor, Israel! de HEERE, onze God, is een enig HEERE! 5Zo zult gij den HEERE, uw God, liefhebben, met uw ganse hart, en met uw ganse ziel, en met al uw vermogen. 6En deze woorden, die ik u heden gebiede, zullen in uw hart zijn. 7En gij zult ze uw kinderen inscherpen, en daarvan spreken, als gij in uw huis zit, en als gij op den weg gaat, en als gij nederligt, en als gij opstaat. 8Ook zult gij ze tot een teken binden op uw hand, en zij zullen u tot voorhoofdspanselen zijn tussen uw ogen. 9En gij zult ze op de posten van uw huis, en aan uw poorten schrijven. 10Als het dan zal geschied zijn, dat de HEERE, uw God, u zal hebben ingebracht in dat land, dat Hij uw vaderen, Abraham, Izak en Jakob, gezworen heeft, u te zullen geven; grote en goede steden, die gij niet gebouwd hebt, 11En huizen, vol van alle goeds, die gij niet gevuld hebt, en uitgehouwen bornputten, die gij niet uitgehouwen hebt, wijngaarden en olijfgaarden, die gij niet geplant hebt, en gij gegeten hebt en verzadigd zijt; 12Zo wacht u, dat gij den HEERE niet vergeet, Die u uit Egypteland, uit het diensthuis heeft uitgevoerd. 13Gij zult den HEERE, uw God, vrezen, en Hem dienen; en gij zult bij Zijn Naam zweren. 14Gij zult andere goden niet navolgen, van de goden der volken, die rondom u zijn. 15Want de HEERE, uw God is een ijverig God in het midden van u; dat de toorn des HEEREN, uws Gods, tegen u niet ontsteke, en Hij u van den aardbodem verdelge. 16Gij zult den HEERE, uw God, niet verzoeken, gelijk als gij Hem verzocht hebt te Massa. 17Gij zult de geboden des HEEREN, uws Gods, vlijtig houden, mitsgaders Zijn getuigenissen, en Zijn inzettingen, die Hij u geboden heeft. 18En gij zult doen, wat recht en goed is in de ogen des HEEREN; opdat het u welga, en dat gij inkomt, en erft het goede land, dat de HEERE uw vaderen gezworen heeft; 19Om al uw vijanden voor uw aangezicht te verdrijven, gelijk als de HEERE gesproken heeft. 20Wanneer uw zoon u morgen zal vragen, zeggende: Wat zijn dat voor getuigenissen, en inzettingen, en rechten, die de HEERE, onze God, ulieden geboden heeft? 21Zo zult gij tot uw zoon zeggen: Wij waren dienstknechten van Farao in Egypte; maar de HEERE heeft ons door een sterke hand uit Egypte uitgevoerd. 22En de HEERE gaf tekenen, en grote en kwade wonderen, in Egypte, aan Farao en aan zijn ganse huis, voor onze ogen; 23En hij voerde ons van daar uit, opdat Hij ons inbracht, om ons het land te geven, dat Hij onzen vaderen gezworen had. 24En de HEERE gebood ons te doen al deze inzettingen, om te vrezen den HEERE, onzen God, ons voor altoos ten goede, om ons in het leven te behouden, gelijk het te dezen dage is. 25En het zal ons gerechtigheid zijn, als wij zullen waarnemen te doen al deze geboden, voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, onzes Gods, gelijk Hij ons geboden heeft.
