1Les gens de Kirjath-Jearim vinrent, et firent monter l’arche de l’Éternel ; ils la conduisirent dans la maison d’Abinadab, sur la colline, et ils consacrèrent son fils Éléazar pour garder l’arche de l’Éternel. 2Il s’était passé bien du temps depuis le jour où l’arche avait été déposée à Kirjath-Jearim. Vingt années s’étaient écoulées. Alors toute la maison d’Israël poussa des gémissements vers l’Éternel. 3Samuel dit à toute la maison d’Israël : Si c’est de tout votre cœur que vous revenez à l’Éternel, ôtez du milieu de vous les dieux étrangers et les Astartés, dirigez votre cœur vers l’Éternel, et servez-le lui seul ; et il vous délivrera de la main des Philistins. 4Et les enfants d’Israël ôtèrent du milieu d’eux les Baals et les Astartés, et ils servirent l’Éternel seul. 5Samuel dit : Assemblez tout Israël à Mitspa, et je prierai l’Éternel pour vous. 6Et ils s’assemblèrent à Mitspa. Ils puisèrent de l’eau et la répandirent devant l’Éternel, et ils jeûnèrent ce jour-là, en disant : Nous avons péché contre l’Éternel ! Samuel jugea les enfants d’Israël à Mitspa. 7Les Philistins apprirent que les enfants d’Israël s’étaient assemblés à Mitspa, et les princes des Philistins montèrent contre Israël. À cette nouvelle, les enfants d’Israël eurent peur des Philistins, 8et ils dirent à Samuel : Ne cesse point de crier pour nous à l’Éternel, notre Dieu, afin qu’il nous sauve de la main des Philistins. 9Samuel prit un agneau de lait, et l’offrit tout entier en holocauste à l’Éternel. Il cria à l’Éternel pour Israël, et l’Éternel l’exauça. 10Pendant que Samuel offrait l’holocauste, les Philistins s’approchèrent pour attaquer Israël. L’Éternel fit retentir en ce jour son tonnerre sur les Philistins, et les mit en déroute. Ils furent battus devant Israël. 11Les hommes d’Israël sortirent de Mitspa, poursuivirent les Philistins, et les battirent jusqu’au-dessous de Beth-Car. 12Samuel prit une pierre, qu’il plaça entre Mitspa et Schen, et il l’appela du nom d’Ében-Ézer, en disant : Jusqu’ici l’Éternel nous a secourus. 13Ainsi les Philistins furent humiliés, et ils ne vinrent plus sur le territoire d’Israël. La main de l’Éternel fut contre les Philistins pendant toute la vie de Samuel. 14Les villes que les Philistins avaient prises sur Israël retournèrent à Israël, depuis Ékron jusqu’à Gath, avec leur territoire ; Israël les arracha de la main des Philistins. Et il y eut paix entre Israël et les Amoréens. 15Samuel fut juge en Israël pendant toute sa vie. 16Il allait chaque année faire le tour de Béthel, de Guilgal et de Mitspa, et il jugeait Israël dans tous ces lieux. 17Puis il revenait à Rama, où était sa maison ; et là il jugeait Israël, et il y bâtit un autel à l’Éternel.
1The men of Kiriath Jearim came, and took Yahweh’s ark, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep Yahweh’s ark. 2From the day that the ark stayed in Kiriath Jearim, the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after Yahweh. 3Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you do return to Yahweh with all your heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you, and direct your hearts to Yahweh, and serve him only; and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.” 4Then the children of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth, and served Yahweh only. 5Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray for you to Yahweh.” 6They gathered together to Mizpah, and drew water, and poured it out before Yahweh, and fasted on that day, and said there, “We have sinned against Yahweh.” Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpah. 7When the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8The children of Israel said to Samuel, “Don’t cease to cry to Yahweh our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.” 9Samuel took a suckling lamb, and offered it for a whole burnt offering to Yahweh: and Samuel cried to Yahweh for Israel; and Yahweh answered him. 10As Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel; but Yahweh thundered with a great thunder on that day on the Philistines, and confused them; and they were struck down before Israel. 11The men of Israel went out of Mizpah, and pursued the Philistines, and struck them, until they came under Beth Kar. 12Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and called its name Ebenezer, saying, “Yahweh helped us until now.” 13So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more within the border of Israel. The hand of Yahweh was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel recovered its border out of the hand of the Philistines. There was peace between Israel and the Amorites. 15Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. 16He went from year to year in circuit to Bethel and Gilgal, and Mizpah; and he judged Israel in all those places. 17His return was to Ramah, for there was his house; and there he judged Israel: and he built there an altar to Yahweh.
1Toen kwamen de mannen van Kirjath-Jearim, en haalden de ark des HEEREN op, en zij brachten ze in het huis van Abinadab, op den heuvel; en zij heiligden zijn zoon Eleazar, dat hij de ark des HEEREN bewaarde. 2En het geschiedde, van dien dag af, dat de ark des Heeren te Kirjath-Jearim bleef, en de dagen werden twintig jaren; en het ganse huis van Israel klaagde den HEERE achterna. 3Toen sprak Samuel tot het ganse huis van Israel, zeggende: Indien gijlieden u met uw ganse hart tot den HEERE bekeert, zo doet de vreemde goden uit het midden van u weg, ook de Astharoths; en richt uw hart tot den HEERE, en dient Hem alleen, zo zal Hij u uit de hand der Filistijnen rukken. 4De kinderen Israels nu deden de Baals en de Astharoths weg, en zij dienden den HEERE alleen. 5Verder zeide Samuel: Vergadert het ganse Israel naar Mizpa, en ik zal den HEERE voor u bidden. 6En zij werden vergaderd te Mizpa, en zij schepten water, en goten het uit voor het aangezicht des HEEREN; en zij vastten te dien dage, en zeiden aldaar: Wij hebben tegen den HEERE gezondigd. Alzo richtte Samuel de kinderen Israels te Mizpa. 7Toen de Filistijnen hoorden, dat de kinderen Israels zich vergaderd hadden te Mizpa, zo kwamen de oversten der Filistijnen op tegen Israel. Als de kinderen Israels dat hoorden, zo vreesden zij voor het aangezicht der Filistijnen. 8En de kinderen Israels zeiden tot Samuel: Zwijg niet van onzentwege, dat gij niet zoudt roepen tot den HEERE, onzen God, opdat Hij ons verlosse uit de hand der Filistijnen. 9Toen nam Samuel een melklam, en hij offerde het geheel den HEERE ten brandoffer; en Samuel riep tot den HEERE voor Israel; en de HEERE verhoorde hem. 10En het geschiedde, toen Samuel dat brandoffer offerde, zo kwamen de Filistijnen aan ten strijde tegen Israel; en de HEERE donderde te dien dage met een groten donder over de Filistijnen, en Hij verschrikte hen, zodat zij verslagen werden voor het aangezicht van Israel. 11En de mannen van Israel togen uit van Mizpa, en vervolgden de Filistijnen, en zij sloegen hen tot onder Beth-kar. 12Samuel nu nam een steen, en stelde dien tussen Mizpa en tussen Sen, en hij noemde diens naam Eben-Haezer; en hij zeide: Tot hiertoe heeft de HEERE ons geholpen. 13Alzo werden de Filistijnen vernederd, en kwamen niet meer in de landpalen van Israel; want de hand des HEEREN was tegen de Filistijnen al de dagen van Samuel. 14En de steden, welke de Filistijnen van Israel genomen hadden kwamen weder aan Israel, van Ekron tot Gath toe; ook rukte Israel derzelver landpale uit de hand der Filistijnen; en er was vrede tussen Israel en tussen de Amorieten. 15Samuel nu richtte Israel al de dagen zijns levens. 16En hij toog van jaar tot jaar, en ging rondom naar Beth-El, en Gilgal, en Mizpa; en hij richtte Israel in al die plaatsen. 17Doch hij keerde weder naar Rama; want daar was zijn huis, en daar richtte hij Israel; en hij bouwde aldaar den HEERE een altaar.
