1Les Philistins prirent l’arche de Dieu, et ils la transportèrent d’Ében-Ézer à Asdod. 2Après s’être emparés de l’arche de Dieu, les Philistins la firent entrer dans la maison de Dagon et la placèrent à côté de Dagon. 3Le lendemain, les Asdodiens, qui s’étaient levés de bon matin, trouvèrent Dagon étendu la face contre terre, devant l’arche de l’Éternel. Ils prirent Dagon, et le remirent à sa place. 4Le lendemain encore, s’étant levés de bon matin, ils trouvèrent Dagon étendu la face contre terre, devant l’arche de l’Éternel ; la tête de Dagon et ses deux mains étaient abattues sur le seuil, et il ne lui restait que le tronc . 5C’est pourquoi jusqu’à ce jour, les prêtres de Dagon et tous ceux qui entrent dans la maison de Dagon à Asdod ne marchent point sur le seuil . 6La main de l’Éternel s’appesantit sur les Asdodiens, et il mit la désolation parmi eux ; il les frappa d’hémorroïdes à Asdod et dans son territoire. 7Voyant qu’il en était ainsi, les gens d’Asdod dirent : L’arche du Dieu d’Israël ne restera pas chez nous, car il appesantit sa main sur nous et sur Dagon, notre dieu. 8Et ils firent chercher et assemblèrent auprès d’eux tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent : Que ferons-nous de l’arche du Dieu d’Israël ? Les princes répondirent : Que l’on transporte à Gath l’arche du Dieu d’Israël. Et l’on y transporta l’arche du Dieu d’Israël. 9Mais après qu’elle eut été transportée, la main de l’Éternel fut sur la ville, et il y eut une très grande consternation ; il frappa les gens de la ville depuis le petit jusqu’au grand, et ils eurent une éruption d’hémorroïdes. 10Alors ils envoyèrent l’arche de Dieu à Ékron. Lorsque l’arche de Dieu entra dans Ékron, les Ékroniens poussèrent des cris, en disant : On a transporté chez nous l’arche du Dieu d’Israël, pour nous faire mourir, nous et notre peuple ! 11Et ils firent chercher et assemblèrent tous les princes des Philistins, et ils dirent : Renvoyez l’arche du Dieu d’Israël ; qu’elle retourne en son lieu, et qu’elle ne nous fasse pas mourir, nous et notre peuple. Car il y avait dans toute la ville une terreur mortelle ; la main de Dieu s’y appesantissait fortement. 12Les gens qui ne mouraient pas étaient frappés d’hémorroïdes, et les cris de la ville montaient jusqu’au ciel.
1Now the Philistines had taken the ark of God, and they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod. 2The Philistines took the ark of God, and brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. 3When they of Ashdod arose early on the next day, behold, Dagon was fallen on his face to the ground before Yahweh’s ark. Only Dagon’s torso was intact. 5Therefore neither the priests of Dagon, nor any who come into Dagon’s house, tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod, to this day. 6But the hand of Yahweh was heavy on them of Ashdod, and he destroyed them, and struck them with tumors, even Ashdod and its borders. 7When the men of Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel shall not stay with us; for his hand is severe on us, and on Dagon our god.” 8They sent therefore and gathered all the lords of the Philistines to them, and said, “What shall we do with the ark of the God of Israel?” They answered, “Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried over to Gath.” They carried the ark of the God of Israel there. 9It was so, that after they had carried it about, the hand of Yahweh was against the city with a very great confusion: and he struck the men of the city, both small and great; and tumors broke out on them. 10So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. As the ark of God came to Ekron, the Ekronites cried out, saying, “They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to kill us and our people.” 11They sent therefore and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and they said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to its own place, that it not kill us and our people.” For there was a deadly confusion throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there. 12The men who didn’t die were struck with the tumors; and the cry of the city went up to heaven.
1De Filistijnen nu namen de ark Gods, en zij brachten ze van Eben-Haezer tot Asdod. 2En de Filistijnen namen de ark Gods, en zij brachten ze in het huis van Dagon, en stelden ze bij Dagon. 3Maar als die van Asdod des anderen daags vroeg opstonden, ziet, zo was Dagon op zijn aangezicht ter aarde gevallen voor de ark des HEEREN. En zij namen Dagon en zetten hem weder op zijn plaats. 4Toen zij nu des anderen daags des morgens vroeg opstonden, ziet, Dagon lag op zijn aangezicht ter aarde gevallen voor de ark des HEEREN; maar het hoofd van Dagon, en de beide palmen zijner handen afgehouwen, aan den dorpel; alleenlijk was Dagon daarop overgebleven. 5Daarom treden de priesters van Dagon, en allen, die in het huis van Dagon komen, niet op den dorpel van Dagon te Asdod, tot op dezen dag. 6Doch de hand des HEEREN was zwaar over die van Asdod, en verwoestte hen; en Hij sloeg ze met spenen, Asdod en haar landpalen. 7Toen nu de mannen te Asdod zagen, dat het alzo toeging, zo zeiden zij: Dat de ark des Gods van Israel bij ons niet blijve; want Zijn hand is hard over ons, en over Dagon, onzen god. 8Daarom zonden zij heen, en verzamelden tot zich al de vorsten der Filistijnen, en zij zeiden: Wat zullen wij met de ark des Gods van Israel doen? En die zeiden: Dat de ark des Gods van Israel rondom Gath ga. Alzo droegen zij de ark des Gods van Israel rondom. 9En het geschiedde, nadat zij die hadden rondom gedragen, zo was de hand des HEEREN tegen die stad met een zeer grote kwelling; want Hij sloeg de lieden dier stad van den kleine tot den grote, en zij hadden spenen in de verborgene plaatsen. 10Toen zonden zij de ark Gods naar Ekron; maar het geschiedde, als de ark Gods te Ekron kwam, zo riepen die van Ekron, zeggende: Zij hebben de ark des Gods van Israel tot mij rondom gebracht, om mij en mijn volk te doden. 11En zij zonden heen, en vergaderden al de vorsten der Filistijnen, en zeiden: Zendt de ark des Gods van Israel heen, dat zij wederkere tot haar plaats, opdat zij mij en mijn volk niet dode; want er was een dodelijke kwelling in de ganse stad, en de hand Gods was er zeer zwaar. 12En de mensen, die niet stierven, werden geslagen met spenen, zodat het geschrei der stad opklom naar den hemel.
