1Samuel prit une fiole d’huile, qu’il répandit sur la tête de Saül. Il le baisa, et dit : L’Éternel ne t’a-t-il pas oint pour que tu sois le chef de son héritage ? 2Aujourd’hui, après m’avoir quitté, tu trouveras deux hommes près du sépulcre de Rachel, sur la frontière de Benjamin, à Tseltsach. Ils te diront : Les ânesses que tu es allé chercher sont retrouvées ; et voici, ton père ne pense plus aux ânesses, mais il est en peine de vous, et dit : Que dois-je faire au sujet de mon fils ? 3De là tu iras plus loin, et tu arriveras au chêne de Thabor, où tu seras rencontré par trois hommes montant vers Dieu à Béthel, et portant l’un trois chevreaux, l’autre trois gâteaux de pain, et l’autre une outre de vin. 4Ils te demanderont comment tu te portes, et ils te donneront deux pains, que tu recevras de leur main. 5Après cela, tu arriveras à Guibea-Élohim, où se trouve une garnison de Philistins. En entrant dans la ville, tu rencontreras une troupe de prophètes descendant du haut lieu, précédés du luth, du tambourin, de la flûte et de la harpe, et prophétisant eux-mêmes. 6L’esprit de l’Éternel te saisira, tu prophétiseras avec eux, et tu seras changé en un autre homme. 7Lorsque ces signes auront eu pour toi leur accomplissement, fais ce que tu trouveras à faire, car Dieu est avec toi. 8Puis tu descendras avant moi à Guilgal ; et voici, je descendrai vers toi, pour offrir des holocaustes et des sacrifices d’actions de grâces. Tu attendras sept jours, jusqu’à ce que j’arrive auprès de toi et que je te dise ce que tu dois faire. 9Dès que Saül eut tourné le dos pour se séparer de Samuel, Dieu lui donna un autre cœur, et tous ces signes s’accomplirent le même jour. 10Lorsqu’ils arrivèrent à Guibea, voici, une troupe de prophètes vint à sa rencontre. L’esprit de Dieu le saisit, et il prophétisa au milieu d’eux. 11Tous ceux qui l’avaient connu auparavant virent qu’il prophétisait avec les prophètes, et l’on se disait l’un à l’autre dans le peuple : Qu’est-il arrivé au fils de Kis ? Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ? 12Quelqu’un de Guibea répondit : Et qui est leur père ? -De là le proverbe : Saül est-il aussi parmi les prophètes ? 13Lorsqu’il eut fini de prophétiser, il se rendit au haut lieu. 14L’oncle de Saül dit à Saül et à son serviteur : Où êtes-vous allés ? Saül répondit : Chercher les ânesses ; mais nous ne les avons pas aperçues, et nous sommes allés vers Samuel. 15L’oncle de Saül reprit : Raconte-moi donc ce que vous a dit Samuel. 16Et Saül répondit à son oncle : Il nous a assuré que les ânesses étaient retrouvées. Et il ne lui dit rien de la royauté dont avait parlé Samuel. 17Samuel convoqua le peuple devant l’Éternel à Mitspa, 18et il dit aux enfants d’Israël : Ainsi parle l’Éternel, le Dieu d’Israël : J’ai fait monter d’Égypte Israël, et je vous ai délivrés de la main des Égyptiens et de la main de tous les royaumes qui vous opprimaient. 19Et aujourd’hui, vous rejetez votre Dieu, qui vous a délivrés de tous vos maux et de toutes vos souffrances, et vous lui dites : Établis un roi sur nous ! Présentez-vous maintenant devant l’Éternel, selon vos tribus et selon vos milliers. 20Samuel fit approcher toutes les tribus d’Israël, et la tribu de Benjamin fut désignée. 21Il fit approcher la tribu de Benjamin par familles, et la famille de Matri fut désignée. Puis Saül, fils de Kis, fut désigné. On le chercha, mais on ne le trouva point. 22On consulta de nouveau l’Éternel : Y a-t-il encore un homme qui soit venu ici ? Et l’Éternel dit : Voici, il est caché vers les bagages. 23On courut le tirer de là, et il se présenta au milieu du peuple. Il les dépassait tous de la tête. 24Samuel dit à tout le peuple : Voyez-vous celui que l’Éternel a choisi ? Il n’y a personne dans tout le peuple qui soit semblable à lui. Et tout le peuple poussa les cris de : Vive le roi ! 25Samuel fit alors connaître au peuple le droit de la royauté, et il l’écrivit dans un livre, qu’il déposa devant l’Éternel. Puis il renvoya tout le peuple, chacun chez soi. 26Saül aussi s’en alla dans sa maison à Guibea. Il fut accompagné par les honnêtes gens, dont Dieu avait touché le cœur. 27Il y eut toutefois des hommes pervers, qui disaient : Quoi ! c’est celui-ci qui nous sauvera ! Et ils le méprisèrent, et ne lui apportèrent aucun présent. Mais Saül n’y prit point garde.
1Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, “Isn’t it that Yahweh has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance? 2When you have departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel’s tomb, in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will tell you, ‘The donkeys which you went to seek have been found; and behold, your father has stopped caring about the donkeys, and is anxious for you, saying, “What shall I do for my son?”’ 3“Then you shall go on forward from there, and you shall come to the oak of Tabor; and three men shall meet you there going up to God to Bethel, one carrying three young goats, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine: 4and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hand. 5“After that you shall come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall happen, when you have come there to the city, that you shall meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tambourine, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying: 6and the Spirit of Yahweh will come mightily on you, and you shall prophesy with them, and shall be turned into another man. 7Let it be, when these signs have come to you, that you do as occasion shall serve you; for God is with you. 8“You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and behold, I will come down to you, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: you shall wait seven days, until I come to you, and show you what you shall do.” 9It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs happened that day. 10When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came mightily on him, and he prophesied among them. 11When all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, “What is this that has come to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12One of the same place answered, “Who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13When he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place. 14Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” He said, “To seek the donkeys. When we saw that they were not found, we came to Samuel.” 15Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys were found.” But concerning the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel spoke, he didn’t tell him. 17Samuel called the people together to Yahweh to Mizpah; 18and he said to the children of Israel, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all the kingdoms that oppressed you:’ 19but you have this day rejected your God, who himself saves you out of all your calamities and your distresses; and you have said to him, ‘No! Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before Yahweh by your tribes, and by your thousands.” 20So Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken. 21He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by their families; and the family of the Matrites was taken; and Saul the son of Kish was taken: but when they sought him, he could not be found. 22Therefore they asked of Yahweh further, “Is there yet a man to come here?” Yahweh answered, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23They ran and fetched him there; and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward. 24Samuel said to all the people, “You see him whom Yahweh has chosen, that there is no one like him among all the people?” All the people shouted, and said, “Let the king live!” 25Then Samuel told the people the regulations of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before Yahweh. Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house. 26Saul also went to his house to Gibeah; and there went with him the army, whose hearts God had touched. 27But certain worthless fellows said, “How shall this man save us?” They despised him, and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
1Toen nam Samuel een oliekruik, en goot ze uit op zijn hoofd, en kuste hem, en zeide: Is het niet alzo, dat de HEERE u tot een voorganger over Zijn erfdeel gezalfd heeft? 2Als gij heden van mij gaat, zo zult gij twee mannen vinden bij het graf van Rachel, aan de landpale van Benjamin, te Zelzah; die zullen tot u zeggen: De ezelinnen zijn gevonden, die gij zijt gaan zoeken, en zie, uw vader heeft de zaken der ezelinnen verlaten, en hij is bekommerd voor ulieden, zeggende: Wat zal ik om mijn zoon doen? 3Als gij u van daar en verder aan begeeft, en zult komen tot aan Elon-Thabor, daar zullen u drie mannen vinden, opgaande tot God naar Beth-El; een, dragende drie bokjes, en een, dragende drie bollen broods, en een, dragende een fles wijn. 4En zij zullen u naar uw welstand vragen, en zij zullen u twee broden geven; die zult gij van hun hand nemen. 5Daarna zult gij komen op den heuvel Gods, waar der Filistijnen bezettingen zijn; en het zal geschieden, als gij aldaar in de stad komt, zo zult gij ontmoeten een hoop profeten, van de hoogte afkomende, en voor hun aangezichten luiten, en trommelen, en pijpen, en harpen, en zij zullen profeteren. 6En de Geest des HEEREN zal vaardig worden over u, en gij zult met hen profeteren; en gij zult in een anderen man veranderd worden. 7En het zal geschieden, als u deze tekenen zullen komen, doe gij, wat uw hand vinden zal, want God zal met u zijn. 8Gij nu zult voor mijn aangezicht afgaan naar Gilgal, en zie, ik zal tot u afkomen, om brandofferen te offeren, om te offeren offeranden der dankzegging; zeven dagen zult gij daar beiden, totdat ik tot u kome, en u bekend make, wat gij doen zult. 9Het geschiedde nu, toen hij zijn schouder keerde, om van Samuel te gaan, veranderde God hem het hart in een ander; en al die tekenen kwamen ten zelven dage. 10Toen zij daar aan den heuvel kwamen, zie, zo kwam hem een hoop profeten tegemoet; en de Geest des HEEREN werd vaardig over hem, en hij profeteerde in het midden van hen. 11En het geschiedde, als een iegelijk, die hem van te voren gekend had, zag, dat hij, ziet, profeteerde met de profeten, zo zeide het volk, een ieder tot zijn metgezel: Wat is dit, dat den zoon van Kis geschied is? Is Saul ook onder de profeten? 12Toen antwoordde een man van daar, en zeide: Wie is toch hun vader? Daarom is het tot een spreekwoord geworden: Is Saul ook onder de profeten? 13Toen hij nu voleind had te profeteren, zo kwam hij op de hoogte. 14En Sauls oom zeide tot hem en tot zijn jongen: Waar zijt gijlieden heengegaan? Hij nu zeide: Om de ezelinnen te zoeken; toen wij zagen, dat zij er niet waren, zo kwamen wij tot Samuel. 15Toen zeide Sauls oom: Geef mij toch te kennen, wat heeft Samuel ulieden gezegd? 16Saul nu zeide tot zijn oom: Hij heeft ons voorzeker te kennen gegeven, dat de ezelinnen gevonden waren; maar de zaak des koninkrijks, waarvan Samuel gezegd had, gaf hij hem niet te kennen. 17Doch Samuel riep het volk te zamen tot den HEERE, te Mizpa. 18En hij zeide tot de kinderen Israels: Alzo heeft de HEERE, de God Israel, gesproken: Ik heb Israel uit Egypte opgebracht, en Ik heb ulieden van de hand der Egyptenaren gered, en van de hand van alle koninkrijken, die u onderdrukten. 19Maar gijlieden hebt heden uw God verworpen, Die u uit al uw ellenden en uw noden verlost heeft, en hebt tot Hem gezegd: Zet een koning over ons; nu dan, stelt u voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, naar uw stammen en naar uw duizenden. 20Toen nu Samuel al de stammen van Israel had doen naderen, zo is de stam van Benjamin geraakt. 21Toen hij den stam van Benjamin deed aankomen naar zijn geslachten, zo werd het geslacht van Matri geraakt; en Saul, de zoon van Kis, werd geraakt. En zij zochten hem, maar hij werd niet gevonden. 22Toen vraagden zij verder den HEERE, of die man nog derwaarts komen zou? De HEERE dan zeide: Ziet, hij heeft zich tussen de vaten verstoken. 23Zij nu liepen, en namen hem van daar, en hij stelde zich in het midden des volks; en hij was hoger dan al het volk, van zijn schouder en opwaarts. 24Toen zeide Samuel tot het ganse volk: Ziet gij, dien de HEERE verkoren heeft? Want gelijk hij, is er niemand onder het ganse volk. Toen juichte het ganse volk, en zij zeiden: de koning leve! 25Samuel nu sprak tot het volk het recht des koninkrijks, en schreef het in een boek, en legde het voor het aangezicht des HEEREN. Toen liet Samuel het ganse volk gaan, elk naar zijn huis. 26En Saul ging ook naar zijn huis te Gibea, en van het heir gingen met hem, welker hart God geroerd had. 27Doch de kinderen Belials zeiden: Wat zou ons deze verlossen? en zij verachtten hem, en brachten hem geen geschenk. Doch hij was als doof.
