1Les Philistins livrèrent bataille à Israël, et les hommes d’Israël prirent la fuite devant les Philistins et tombèrent morts sur la montagne de Guilboa. 2Les Philistins poursuivirent Saül et ses fils, et tuèrent Jonathan, Abinadab et Malkischua, fils de Saül. 3L’effort du combat porta sur Saül ; les archers l’atteignirent, et le blessèrent grièvement. 4Saül dit alors à celui qui portait ses armes : Tire ton épée, et m’en transperce, de peur que ces incirconcis ne viennent me percer et me faire subir leurs outrages. Celui qui portait ses armes ne voulut pas, car il était saisi de crainte. Et Saül prit son épée, et se jeta dessus. 5Celui qui portait les armes de Saül, le voyant mort, se jeta aussi sur son épée, et mourut avec lui. 6Ainsi périrent en même temps, dans cette journée, Saül et ses trois fils, celui qui portait ses armes, et tous ses gens. 7Ceux d’Israël qui étaient de ce côté de la vallée et de ce côté du Jourdain, ayant vu que les hommes d’Israël s’enfuyaient et que Saül et ses fils étaient morts, abandonnèrent leurs villes pour prendre aussi la fuite. Et les Philistins allèrent s’y établir. 8Le lendemain, les Philistins vinrent pour dépouiller les morts, et ils trouvèrent Saül et ses trois fils tombés sur la montagne de Guilboa. 9Ils coupèrent la tête de Saül, et enlevèrent ses armes. Puis ils firent annoncer ces bonnes nouvelles par tout le pays des Philistins dans les maisons de leurs idoles et parmi le peuple. 10Ils mirent les armes de Saül dans la maison des Astartés, et ils attachèrent son cadavre sur les murs de Beth-Schan. 11Lorsque les habitants de Jabès en Galaad apprirent comment les Philistins avaient traité Saül, 12tous les vaillants hommes se levèrent, et, après avoir marché toute la nuit, ils arrachèrent des murs de Beth-Schan le cadavre de Saül et ceux de ses fils. Puis ils revinrent à Jabès, où ils les brûlèrent ; 13ils prirent leurs os, et les enterrèrent sous le tamarisc à Jabès. Et ils jeûnèrent sept jours.
1Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain on Mount Gilboa. 2The Philistines followed hard on Saul and on his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. 3The battle went hard against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers. 4Then Saul said to his armor bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me!” But his armor bearer would not; for he was terrified. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell on it. 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword, and died with him. 6So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armor bearer, and all his men, that same day together. 7When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, and those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them. 8On the next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9They cut off his head, and stripped off his armor, and sent into the land of the Philistines all around, to carry the news to the house of their idols, and to the people. 10They put his armor in the house of the Ashtaroth; and they fastened his body to the wall of Beth Shan. 11When the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard concerning him that which the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all the valiant men arose, and went all night, and took the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth Shan; and they came to Jabesh, and burnt them there. 13They took their bones, and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh, and fasted seven days.
1De Filistijnen dan steden tegen Israel; en de mannen Israels vloden voor het aangezicht der Filistijnen, en vielen verslagen op het gebergte Gilboa. 2En de Filistijnen hielden dicht op Saul en zijn zonen; en de Filistijnen sloegen Jonathan, en Abinadab, en Malchisua, de zonen van Saul. 3En de strijd werd zwaar tegen Saul; en de mannen, die met den boog schieten, troffen hem aan, en hij vreesde zeer voor de schutters. 4Toen zeide Saul tot zijn wapendrager: Trek uw zwaard uit, en doorsteek mij daarmede, dat misschien deze onbesnedenen niet komen, en mij doorsteken, en met mij den spot drijven. Maar zijn wapendrager wilde niet, want hij vreesde zeer. Toen nam Saul het zwaard, en viel daarin. 5Toen zijn wapendrager zag, dat Saul dood was, zo viel hij ook in zijn zwaard en stierf met hem. 6Alzo stierf Saul, en zijn drie zonen, en zijn wapendrager, ook al zijn mannen, te dienzelven dage te gelijk. 7Als de mannen van Israel, die aan deze zijde van het dal waren, en die aan deze zijde der Jordaan waren, zagen, dat de mannen van Israel gevloden waren, en dat Saul en zijn zonen dood waren, zo verlieten zij de steden, en zij vloden. Toen kwamen de Filistijnen en woonden daarin. 8Het geschiedde nu des anderen daags, als de Filistijnen kwamen, om de verslagenen te plunderen, zo vonden zij Saul en zijn drie zonen, liggende op het gebergte Gilboa. 9En zij hieuwen zijn hoofd af, en zij togen zijn wapenen uit, en zij zonden ze in der Filistijnen land rondom, om te boodschappen in het huis hunner afgoden, en onder het volk. 10En zij legden zijn wapenen in het huis van Astharoth; en zijn lichaam hechtten zij aan den muur te Beth-San. 11Als de inwoners van Jabes in Gilead daarvan hoorden, wat de Filistijnen Saul gedaan hadden; 12Zo maakten zich op alle strijdbare mannen, en gingen den gehelen nacht, en zij namen het lichaam van Saul, en de lichamen zijner zonen, van den muur te Beth-San; en zij kwamen te Jabes, en brandden ze aldaar. 13En zij namen hun beenderen, en begroeven ze onder het geboomte te Jabes; en zij vastten zeven dagen.
