1David partit de là, et se sauva dans la caverne d’Adullam. Ses frères et toute la maison de son père l’apprirent, et ils descendirent vers lui. 2Tous ceux qui se trouvaient dans la détresse, qui avaient des créanciers, ou qui étaient mécontents, se rassemblèrent auprès de lui, et il devint leur chef. Ainsi se joignirent à lui environ quatre cents hommes. 3De là David s’en alla à Mitspé dans le pays de Moab. Il dit au roi de Moab : Permets, je te prie, à mon père et à ma mère de se retirer chez vous, jusqu’à ce que je sache ce que Dieu fera de moi. 4Et il les conduisit devant le roi de Moab, et ils demeurèrent avec lui tout le temps que David fut dans la forteresse. 5Le prophète Gad dit à David : Ne reste pas dans la forteresse, va-t’en, et entre dans le pays de Juda. Et David s’en alla, et parvint à la forêt de Héreth. 6Saül apprit que l’on avait des renseignements sur David et sur ses gens. Saül était assis sous le tamarisc, à Guibea, sur la hauteur ; il avait sa lance à la main, et tous ses serviteurs se tenaient près de lui. 7Et Saül dit à ses serviteurs qui se tenaient près de lui : Écoutez, Benjamites ! Le fils d’Isaï vous donnera-t-il à tous des champs et des vignes ? Fera-t-il de vous tous des chefs de mille et des chefs de cent ? 8Sinon, pourquoi avez-vous tous conspiré contre moi, et n’y a-t-il personne qui m’informe de l’alliance de mon fils avec le fils d’Isaï ? Pourquoi n’y a-t-il personne de vous qui souffre à mon sujet, et qui m’avertisse que mon fils a soulevé mon serviteur contre moi, afin qu’il me dressât des embûches, comme il le fait aujourd’hui ? 9Doëg, l’Édomite, qui se trouvait aussi parmi les serviteurs de Saül, répondit : J’ai vu le fils d’Isaï venir à Nob, auprès d’Achimélec, fils d’Achithub. 10Achimélec a consulté pour lui l’Éternel, il lui a donné des vivres et lui a remis l’épée de Goliath, le Philistin. 11Le roi envoya chercher Achimélec, fils d’Achithub, le sacrificateur, et toute la maison de son père, les sacrificateurs qui étaient à Nob. Ils se rendirent tous vers le roi. 12Saül dit : Écoute, fils d’Achithub ! Il répondit : Me voici, mon seigneur ! 13Saül lui dit : Pourquoi avez-vous conspiré contre moi, toi et le fils d’Isaï ? Pourquoi lui as-tu donné du pain et une épée, et as-tu consulté Dieu pour lui, afin qu’il s’élevât contre moi et me dressât des embûches, comme il le fait aujourd’hui ? 14Achimélec répondit au roi : Lequel d’entre tous tes serviteurs peut être comparé au fidèle David, gendre du roi, dévoué à ses ordres, et honoré dans ta maison ? 15Est-ce aujourd’hui que j’ai commencé à consulter Dieu pour lui ? Loin de moi ! Que le roi ne mette rien à la charge de son serviteur ni de personne de la maison de mon père, car ton serviteur ne connaît de tout ceci aucune chose, petite ou grande. 16Le roi dit : Tu mourras, Achimélec, toi et toute la maison de ton père. 17Et le roi dit aux coureurs qui se tenaient près de lui : Tournez-vous, et mettez à mort les sacrificateurs de l’Éternel ; car ils sont d’accord avec David, ils ont bien su qu’il s’enfuyait, et ils ne m’ont point averti. Mais les serviteurs du roi ne voulurent pas avancer la main pour frapper les sacrificateurs de l’Éternel. 18Alors le roi dit à Doëg : Tourne-toi, et frappe les sacrificateurs. Et Doëg, l’Édomite, se tourna, et ce fut lui qui frappa les sacrificateurs ; il fit mourir en ce jour quatre-vingt-cinq hommes portant l’éphod de lin. 19Saül frappa encore du tranchant de l’épée Nob, ville sacerdotale ; hommes et femmes, enfants et nourrissons, bœufs, ânes, et brebis, tombèrent sous le tranchant de l’épée. 20Un fils d’Achimélec, fils d’Achithub, échappa. Son nom était Abiathar. Il s’enfuit auprès de David, 21et lui rapporta que Saül avait tué les sacrificateurs de l’Éternel. 22David dit à Abiathar : J’ai bien pensé ce jour même que Doëg, l’Édomite, se trouvant là, ne manquerait pas d’informer Saül. C’est moi qui suis cause de la mort de toutes les personnes de la maison de ton père. 23Reste avec moi, ne crains rien, car celui qui cherche ma vie cherche la tienne ; près de moi tu seras bien gardé.
1David therefore departed there, and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. 2Everyone who was in distress, and everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented, gathered themselves to him; and he became captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. 3David went there to Mizpeh of Moab, and he said to the king of Moab, “Please let my father and my mother come out with you, until I know what God will do for me.” 4He brought them before the king of Moab; and they lived with him all the while that David was in the stronghold. 5The prophet Gad said to David, “Don’t stay in the stronghold. Depart, and go into the land of Judah.” Then David departed, and came into the forest of Hereth. 6Saul heard that David was discovered, and the men who were with him. Now Saul was sitting in Gibeah, under the tamarisk tree in Ramah, with his spear in his hand, and all his servants were standing about him. 7Saul said to his servants who stood about him, “Hear now, you Benjamites! Will the son of Jesse give everyone of you fields and vineyards, will he make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, 8that all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one who discloses to me when my son makes a treaty with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you who is sorry for me, or discloses to me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?” 9Then Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, answered and said, “I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 10He inquired of Yahweh for him, gave him food, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.” 11Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests who were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 12Saul said, “Hear now, you son of Ahitub.” He answered, “Here I am, my lord.” 13Saul said to him, “Why have you conspired against me, you and the son of Jesse, in that you have given him bread, and a sword, and have inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?” 14Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, “Who among all your servants is so faithful as David, who is the king’s son-in-law, and is taken into your council, and is honorable in your house? 15Have I today begun to inquire of God for him? Be it far from me! Don’t let the king impute anything to his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for your servant knows nothing of all this, less or more.” 16The king said, “You shall surely die, Ahimelech, you, and all your father’s house.” 17The king said to the guard who stood about him, “Turn, and kill the priests of Yahweh; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and didn’t disclose it to me.” But the servants of the king wouldn’t put out their hand to fall on the priests of Yahweh. 18The king said to Doeg, “Turn and attack the priests!” Doeg the Edomite turned, and he attacked the priests, and he killed on that day eighty-five people who wore a linen ephod. 19He struck Nob, the city of the priests, with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing babies, and cattle and donkeys and sheep, with the edge of the sword. 20One of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped, and fled after David. 21Abiathar told David that Saul had slain Yahweh’s priests. 22David said to Abiathar, “I knew on that day, when Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would surely tell Saul. I am responsible for the death of all the persons of your father’s house. 23Stay with me, don’t be afraid; for he who seeks my life seeks your life. For with me you shall be in safeguard.”
1Toen ging David van daar, en ontkwam in de spelonk van Adullam. En zijn broeders hoorden het, en het ganse huis zijns vaders, en kwamen derwaarts tot hem af. 2En tot hem vergaderde alle man, die benauwd was, en alle man, die een schuldeiser had, en alle man, wiens ziel bitterlijk bedroefd was, en hij werd tot overste over hen; zodat bij hem waren omtrent vierhonderd mannen. 3En David ging van daar naar Mizpa der Moabieten; en hij zeide tot den koning der Moabieten: Laat toch mijn vader en mijn moeder bij ulieden uitgaan, totdat ik weet, wat God mij doen zal. 4En hij bracht hen voor het aangezicht van den koning der Moabieten; en zij bleven bij hem al de dagen, die David in de vesting was. 5Doch de profeet Gad zeide tot David: Blijf in de vesting niet, ga heen, en ga in het land van Juda. Toen ging David heen, en hij kwam in het woud Chereth. 6En Saul hoorde, dat David bekend geworden was, en de mannen, die bij hem waren. Saul nu zat op een heuvel onder het geboomte te Rama, en hij had zijn spies in zijn hand, en al zijn knechten stonden bij hem. 7Toen zeide Saul tot zijn knechten, die bij hem stonden: Hoort toch, gij, zonen van Jemini, zal ook de zoon van Isai u altegader akkers en wijnbergen geven? Zal hij u allen tot oversten van duizenden, en oversten van honderden stellen? 8Dat gij u allen tegen mij verbonden hebt, en niemand voor mijn oor openbaart, dat mijn zoon een verbond gemaakt heeft met den zoon van Isai; en niemand is onder ulieden, dien het wee doet van mijnentwege, en die het voor mijn oor openbaart; want mijn zoon heeft mijn knecht tegen mij opgewekt, tot een lagenlegger, gelijk het te dezen dage is. 9Toen antwoordde Doeg, de Edomiet, die bij de knechten van Saul stond, en zeide: Ik zag den zoon van Isai, komende te Nob, tot Achimelech, den zoon van Ahitub; 10Die den HEERE voor hem vraagde, en gaf hem teerkost; hij gaf hem ook het zwaard van Goliath, den Filistijn. 11Toen zond de koning heen, om den priester Achimelech, den zoon van Ahitub, te roepen, en zijns vaders ganse huis, de priesters, die te Nob waren; en zij kwamen allen tot den koning. 12En Saul zeide: Hoor nu, gij, zoon van Ahitub! En hij zeide: Zie, hier ben ik, mijn heer! 13Toen zeide Saul tot hem: Waarom hebt gijlieden samen u tegen mij verbonden, gij en de zoon van Isai, mits dat gij hem gegeven hebt brood en het zwaard, en God voor hem gevraagd, dat hij zou opstaan tegen mij tot een lagenlegger, gelijk het te dezen dage is? 14En Achimelech antwoordde den koning en zeide: Wie is toch onder al uw knechten getrouw als David, en des konings schoonzoon, en voortgaande in uw gehoorzaamheid, en is eerlijk in uw huis? 15Heb ik heden begonnen God voor hem te vragen? Dat zij verre van mij, de koning legge op zijn knecht geen ding, noch op het ganse huis mijns vader; want uw knecht heeft van al deze dingen niet geweten, klein noch groot. 16Doch de koning zeide: Achimelech, gij moet den dood sterven, gij en het ganse huis uws vaders. 17En de koning zeide tot de trawanten, die bij hem stonden: Wendt u, en doodt de priesters des HEEREN, omdat hun hand ook met David is, en omdat zij geweten hebben, dat hij vluchtte, en hebben het voor mijn oren niet geopenbaard. Doch de knechten des konings wilden hun hand niet uitsteken, om op de priesters des HEEREN aan te vallen. 18Toen zeide de koning tot Doeg: Wend gij u, en val aan op de priesters. Toen wendde zich Doeg, de Edomiet, en hij viel aan op de priesters, en doodde te dien dage vijf en tachtig mannen, die den linnen lijfrok droegen. 19Hij sloeg ook Nob, de stad dezer priesters, met de scherpte des zwaards, van den man tot de vrouw, van de kinderen tot de zuigelingen, zelfs de ossen en ezels, en de schapen, sloeg hij met de scherpte des zwaards. 20Doch een der zonen van Achimelech, den zoon van Ahitub, ontkwam, wiens naam was Abjathar; die vluchtte David na. 21En Abjathar boodschapte het David, dat Saul de priesteren des HEEREN gedood had. 22Toen zeide David tot Abjathar: Ik wist wel te dien dage, toen Doeg, de Edomiet, daar was, dat hij het voorzeker Saul zou te kennen geven; ik heb oorzaak gegeven tegen al de zielen van uws vaders huis. 23Blijf bij mij; vrees niet; want wie mijn ziel zoeken zal, die zal uw ziel zoeken; maar gij zult met mij in bewaring zijn.
