Και ότε ήκουσε τούτο, απέστειλε πρέσβεις προς τον Εζεκίαν, λέγων, 10Ούτω θέλετε ειπεί προς Εζεκίαν, τον βασιλέα του Ιούδα, λέγοντες, Ο Θεός σου, επί τον οποίον θαρρείς, ας μη σε απατά, λέγων, Η Ιερουσαλήμ δεν θέλει παραδοθή εις την χείρα του βασιλέως της Ασσυρίας. 11Ιδού, συ ήκουσας τι έκαμον οι βασιλείς της Ασσυρίας εις πάντας τους τόπους, καταστρέφοντες αυτούς· και συ θέλεις λυτρωθή; 12Μήπως οι θεοί των εθνών ελύτρωσαν εκείνους, τους οποίους οι πατέρες μου κατέστρεψαν, την Γωζάν και την Χαρράν και Ρεσέφ και τους υιούς του Εδέν, τους εν Τελασσάρ; 13Που ο βασιλεύς της Αιμάθ και ο βασιλεύς της Αρφάδ και ο βασιλεύς της πόλεως Σεφαρουΐμ, Ενά και Αυά; 14Και λαβών ο Εζεκίας την επιστολήν εκ της χειρός των πρέσβεων ανέγνωσεν αυτήν· και ανέβη ο Εζεκίας εις τον οίκον του Κυρίου και εξετύλιξεν αυτήν ενώπιον του Κυρίου. 15Και προσηυχήθη εις τον Κύριον ο Εζεκίας λέγων, 16Κύριε των δυνάμεων, Θεέ του Ισραήλ, ο καθήμενος επί των χερουβείμ, συ αυτός είσαι ο Θεός, ο μόνος, πάντων των βασιλείων της γής· συ έκαμες τον ουρανόν και την γην. 17Κλίνον, Κύριε, το ους σου και άκουσον· άνοιξον, Κύριε, τους οφθαλμούς σου και ιδέ· και άκουσον πάντας τους λόγους του Σενναχειρείμ, όστις απέστειλε τούτον διά να ονειδίση τον ζώντα Θεόν. 18Αληθώς, Κύριε, οι βασιλείς της Ασσυρίας ηρήμωσαν πάντα τα έθνη και τους τόπους αυτών, 19και έρριψαν εις το πυρ τους θεούς αυτών· διότι δεν ήσαν θεοί, αλλ' έργον χειρών ανθρώπων, ξύλα και λίθοι· διά τούτο κατέστρεψαν αυτούς. 20Τώρα λοιπόν, Κύριε Θεέ ημών, σώσον ημάς εκ της χειρός αυτού· διά να γνωρίσωσι πάντα τα βασίλεια της γης, ότι συ είσαι ο Κύριος, ο μόνος. 21Τότε απέστειλεν Ησαΐας ο υιός του Αμώς προς Εζεκίαν, λέγων, Ούτω λέγει Κύριος ο Θεός του Ισραήλ· Ήκουσα όσα προσηυχήθης εις εμέ κατά του Σενναχειρείμ, βασιλέως της Ασσυρίας. 22Ούτος είναι ο λόγος, τον οποίον ο Κύριος ελάλησε περί αυτού· Σε κατεφρόνησε, σε ενέπαιξεν η παρθένος, θυγάτηρ της Σιών· οπίσω σου έσεισε κεφαλήν η θυγάτηρ της Ιερουσαλήμ. 23Τίνα ωνείδισας και εβλασφήμησας; και κατά τίνος ύψωσας φωνήν και εσήκωσας υψηλά τους οφθαλμούς σου; κατά του Αγίου του Ισραήλ. 24Τον Κύριον ωνείδισας διά των δούλων σου και είπας, Με το πλήθος των αμαξών μου ανέβην εγώ εις το ύψος των ορέων, εις τα πλευρά του Λιβάνου· και θέλω κόψει τας υψηλάς κέδρους αυτού, τας εκλεκτάς ελάτους αυτού· και θέλω εισέλθει εις το ύψος των άκρων αυτού, εις το δάσος του Καρμήλου αυτού· 25εγώ ανέσκαψα και έπιον ύδατα· και με το ίχνος των ποδών μου εξήρανα πάντας τους ποταμούς των πολιορκουμένων. 26Μη δεν ήκουσας ότι εγώ έκαμον τούτο παλαιόθεν και από ημερών αρχαίων εβουλεύθην αυτό; τώρα δε εξετέλεσα τούτο, ώστε να ήσαι διά να καταστρέφης πόλεις ωχυρωμένας εις ερειπίων σωρούς· 27διά τούτο οι κάτοικοι αυτών ήσαν μικράς δυνάμεως, ετρόμαξαν και κατησχύνθησαν· ήσαν ως ο χόρτος του αγρού και ως η χλόη, ως ο χόρτος των δωμάτων και ως ο σίτος ο καιόμενος πριν καλαμώση. 28Πλην εγώ εξεύρω την κατοικίαν σου και την έξοδόν σου και την είσοδόν σου και την κατ' εμού λύσσαν σου. 29Επειδή η κατ' εμού λύσσα σου και η αλαζονεία σου ανέβησαν εις τα ώτα μου, διά τούτο θέλω βάλει τον κρίκον μου εις τους μυκτήράς σου και τον χαλινόν μου εις τα χείλη σου, και θέλω σε επιστρέψει διά της οδού δι' ης ήλθες. 30Και τούτο θέλει είσθαι εις σε το σημείον· το έτος τούτο θέλετε φάγει ό,τι είναι αυτοφυές· και το δεύτερον έτος, ό,τι εκφύεται από του αυτού· το δε τρίτον έτος, σπείρατε και θερίσατε και φυτεύσατε αμπελώνας και φάγετε τον καρπόν αυτών. 31Και το υπόλοιπον εκ του οίκου Ιούδα, το διασωθέν, θέλει ριζώσει πάλιν υποκάτωθεν και θέλει δώσει επάνω καρπούς. 32Διότι εξ Ιερουσαλήμ θέλει εξέλθει το υπόλοιπον και εκ του όρους Σιών το διασωθέν· ο ζήλος του Κυρίου των δυνάμεων θέλει εκτελέσει τούτο. 33Όθεν ούτω λέγει Κύριος περί του βασιλέως της Ασσυρίας· δεν θέλει εισέλθει εις την πόλιν ταύτην, ουδέ θέλει τοξεύσει εκεί βέλος, ουδέ θέλει προβάλει κατ' αυτής ασπίδας, ουδέ θέλει υψώσει εναντίον αυτής πρόχωμα· 34διά της οδού δι' ης ήλθε, δι' αυτής θέλει επιστρέψει και εις την πόλιν ταύτην δεν θέλει εισέλθει, λέγει ο Κύριος· 35διότι θέλω υπερασπισθή την πόλιν ταύτην, ώστε να σώσω αυτήν, ένεκεν εμού και ένεκεν του δούλου μου Δαβίδ. 36Τότε εξήλθεν ο άγγελος του Κυρίου και επάταξεν εν τω στρατοπέδω των Ασσυρίων εκατόν ογδοήκοντα πέντε χιλιάδας· και ότε εξηγέρθησαν το πρωΐ, ιδού, ήσαν πάντες σώματα νεκρά. 37Και εσηκώθη και έφυγε και επέστρεψε Σενναχειρείμ ο βασιλεύς της Ασσυρίας και κατώκησεν εν Νινευή. 38Και ενώ προσεκύνει εν τω οίκω Νισρώκ του θεού αυτού, Αδραμμέλεχ και Σαρασάρ οι υιοί αυτού επάταξαν αυτόν εν μαχαίρα, αυτοί δε έφυγον εις γην Αρμενίας· εβασίλευσε δε αντ' αυτού Εσαραδδών ο υιός αυτού.
1When king Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house. 2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to give birth. 4It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’” 8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9He heard news concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “He has come out to fight against you.” When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Shall you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’” 14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh. 15Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying, 16“Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, who is enthroned among the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17Turn your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and behold. Hear all of the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God. 18Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the countries and their land, 19and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. 20Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.” 21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. 23Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel. 24By your servants, have you defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice fir trees. I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field. 25I have dug and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.” 26Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it in ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to destroy fortified cities, turning them into ruinous heaps. 27Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like a field before its crop has grown. 28But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me. 29Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 30This shall be the sign to you. You will eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same; and in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and survivors will escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.’ 33Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. 34By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. 35‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’” 36Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, returned to Nineveh, and stayed there. 38As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

Tegen den Heilige Israels! 24Door middel uwer dienstknechten hebt gij den HEERE gehoond, en gezegd: Ik heb met de menigte mijner wagenen beklommen de hoogte der bergen, de zijden van Libanon; en ik zal zijn hoge cederbomen en zijn uitgelezen dennebomen afhouwen; en zal komen tot zijn uiterste hoogte, in het woud zijns schonen velds. 25Ik heb gegraven en de wateren gedronken; en ik heb met mijn voetzolen alle rivieren der belegerde plaatsen verdroogd. 26Hebt gij niet gehoord, dat Ik zulks lang te voren gedaan heb, en dat van de oude dagen af geformeerd heb? Nu heb Ik dat doen komen, dat gij zoudt zijn, om de vaste steden te verstoren tot woeste hopen. 27Daarom waren haar inwoners handeloos, zij waren verslagen en beschaamd; zij waren als het gras des velds en de groene grasscheutjes, als het hooi der daken, en het brandkoren, eer het overeind staat. 28Maar Ik weet uw zitten, en uw uitgaan, en uw inkomen, en uw woeden tegen Mij. 29Om uw woeden tegen Mij, en dat uw woeling voor Mijn oren opgekomen is, zo zal Ik Mijn haak in uw neus leggen, en Mijn gebit in uw lippen, en Ik zal u doen wederkeren door dien weg, door denwelken gij gekomen zijt. 30En dat zij u een teken, dat men in dit jaar, wat van zelf gewassen is, eten zal, en in het tweede jaar, wat daarvan weder uitspruit; maar zaait in het derde jaar, en maait, en plant wijngaarden, en eet hun vruchten. 31Want het ontkomene, dat overgebleven is van het huis van Juda, zal wederom nederwaarts wortelen, en het zal opwaarts vrucht dragen. 32Want van Jeruzalem zal het overblijfsel uitgaan, en het ontkomene van den berg Sion; de ijver des HEEREN der heirscharen zal dit doen. 33Daarom, zo zegt de HEERE van den koning van Assyrie: Hij zal in deze stad niet komen, noch daar een pijl inschieten; ook zal hij met geen schild daarvoor komen, en zal geen wal daartegen opwerpen. 34Door den weg, dien hij gekomen is, door dien zal hij wederkeren; maar in deze stad zal hij niet komen, zegt de HEERE. 35Want Ik zal deze stad beschermen, om die te verlossen, om Mijnentwil, en om Davids, Mijns knechts wil. 36Toen voer de engel des HEEREN uit, en sloeg in het leger van Assyrie honderd vijf en tachtig duizend. En toen zij zich des morgens vroeg opmaakten, ziet, die allen waren dode lichamen. 37Zo vertrok Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, en toog henen, en keerde weder; en hij bleef te Nineve. 38Het geschiedde nu, als hij in het huis van Nisroch, zijn god, zich nederboog, dat Adramelech en Sarezer, zijn zonen, hem met het zwaard versloegen; doch zij ontkwamen in het land van Ararat; en Esar-Haddon, zijn zoon, werd koning in zijn plaats.
