1Quando l’Iddio tuo, l’Eterno, ti avrà introdotto nel paese dove vai per prenderne possesso, e ne avrà cacciate d’innanzi a te molte nazioni: gli Hittei, i Ghirgasei, gli Amorei, i Cananei, i Ferezei, gli Hivvei e i Gebusei, sette nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, 2e quando l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, le avrà date in tuo potere e tu le avrai sconfitte, tu le voterai allo sterminio: non farai con esse alleanza, ne farai loro grazia. 3Non t’imparenterai con loro, non darai le tue figliuole ai loro figliuoli e non prenderai le loro figliuole per i tuoi figliuoli, 4perché stornerebbero i tuoi figliuoli dal seguir me per farli servire a dèi stranieri, e l’ira dell’Eterno s’accenderebbe contro a voi, ed egli ben presto vi distruggerebbe. 5Ma farete loro così: demolirete i loro altari, spezzerete le loro statue, abbatterete i loro idoli e darete alle fiamme le loro immagini scolpite. 6Poiché tu sei un popolo consacrato all’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio tuo; l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, ti ha scelto per essere il suo tesoro particolare fra tutti i popoli che sono sulla faccia della terra. 7L’Eterno ha riposto in voi la sua affezione e vi ha scelti, non perché foste più numerosi di tutti gli altri popoli, ché anzi siete meno numerosi d’ogni altro popolo; 8ma perché l’Eterno vi ama, perché ha voluto mantenere il giuramento fatto ai vostri padri, l’Eterno vi ha tratti fuori con mano potente e vi ha redenti dalla casa di schiavitù, dalla mano di Faraone, re d’Egitto. 9Riconosci dunque che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, è Dio: l’Iddio fedele, che mantiene il suo patto e la sua benignità fino alla millesima generazione a quelli che l’amano e osservano i suoi comandamenti, 10ma rende immediatamente a quelli che l’odiano ciò che si meritano, distruggendoli; non differisce, ma rende immediatamente a chi l’odia ciò che si merita. 11Osserva dunque i comandamenti, le leggi e le prescrizioni che oggi ti do, mettendoli in pratica. 12E avverrà che, per aver voi dato ascolto a queste prescrizioni e per averle osservate e messe in pratica, il vostro Dio, l’Eterno, vi manterrà il patto e la benignità che promise con giuramento ai vostri padri. 13Egli t’amerà, ti benedirà, ti moltiplicherà, benedirà il frutto del tuo seno e il frutto del tuo suolo: il tuo frumento, il tuo mosto e il tuo olio, il figliare delle tue vacche e delle tue pecore, nel paese che giurò ai tuoi padri di darti. 14Tu sarai benedetto più di tutti i popoli, e non ci sarà in mezzo a te né uomo né donna sterile, né animale sterile fra il tuo bestiame. 15L’Eterno allontanerà da te ogni malattia, e non manderà su te alcuno di quei morbi funesti d’Egitto che ben conoscesti, ma li farà venire addosso a quelli che t’odiano. 16Sterminerai dunque tutti i popoli che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, sta per dare in tuo potere; l’occhio tuo non n’abbia pietà; e non servire agli dèi loro, perché ciò ti sarebbe un laccio. Forse dirai in cuor tuo: 17"Queste nazioni sono più numerose di me; come potrò io cacciarle?" 18Non le temere; ricordati di quello che l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, fece a Faraone e a tutti gli Egiziani; 19ricordati delle grandi prove che vedesti con gli occhi tuoi, de’ miracoli e dei prodigi, della mano potente e del braccio steso coi quali l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, ti trasse dall’Egitto; così farà l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, a tutti i popoli, dei quali hai timore. 20L’Eterno, il tuo Dio, manderà pure contro a loro i calabroni, finché quelli che saranno rimasti e quelli che si saranno nascosti per paura di te, siano periti. 21Non ti sgomentare per via di loro, poiché l’Iddio tuo, l’Eterno, è in mezzo a te, Dio grande e terribile. 22E l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, caccerà a poco a poco queste nazioni d’innanzi a te; tu non le potrai distruggere a un tratto, perché altrimenti le fiere della campagna moltiplicherebbero a tuo danno; 23ma il tuo Dio, l’Eterno, le darà in tuo potere, e le metterà interamente in rotta finché siano distrutte. 24Ti darà nelle mani i loro re, e tu farai scomparire i loro nomi di sotto ai cieli; nessuno potrà starti a fronte, finché tu le abbia distrutte. 25Darai alle fiamme le immagini scolpite dei loro dèi; non agognerai e non prenderai per te l’argento ch’è su quelle, onde tu non abbia a esserne preso come da un laccio; perché sono un’abominazione per l’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio tuo; 26e non introdurrai cosa abominevole in casa tua, perché saresti maledetto, com’è quella cosa; la detesterai e l’abominerai assolutamente, perché è un interdetto.
1When Yahweh your God brings you into the land where you go to possess it, and casts out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; 2and when Yahweh your God delivers them up before you, and you strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them; 3neither shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to his son, nor shall you take his daughter for your son. 4For he will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other gods. So Yahweh’s anger would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly. 5But you shall deal with them like this. You shall break down their altars, dash their pillars in pieces, and cut down their Asherah poles, and burn their engraved images with fire. 6For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God. Yahweh your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, above all peoples who are on the face of the earth. 7Yahweh didn’t set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples: 8but because Yahweh loves you, and because he desires to keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, Yahweh has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that Yahweh your God himself is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness with them who love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations, 10and repays those who hate him to their face, to destroy them. He will not be slack to him who hates him. He will repay him to his face. 11You shall therefore keep the commandments, the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command you this day, to do them. 12It shall happen, because you listen to these ordinances, and keep and do them, that Yahweh your God will keep with you the covenant and the loving kindness which he swore to your fathers. 13He will love you, bless you, multiply you. He will also bless the fruit of your body and the fruit of your ground, your grain and your new wine and your oil, the increase of your livestock and the young of your flock, in the land which he swore to your fathers to give you. 14You shall be blessed above all peoples. There shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your livestock. 15Yahweh will take away from you all sickness; and none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which you know, will he put on you, but will lay them on all those who hate you. 16You shall consume all the peoples whom Yahweh your God shall deliver to you. Your eye shall not pity them: neither shall you serve their gods; for that would be a snare to you. 17If you shall say in your heart, “These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?” 18you shall not be afraid of them. You shall remember well what Yahweh your God did to Pharaoh, and to all Egypt; 19the great trials which your eyes saw, the signs, the wonders, the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, by which Yahweh your God brought you out. So shall Yahweh your God do to all the peoples of whom you are afraid. 20Moreover Yahweh your God will send the hornet among them, until those who are left, and hide themselves, perish from before you. 21You shall not be scared of them; for Yahweh your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God. 22Yahweh your God will cast out those nations before you little by little. You may not consume them at once, lest the animals of the field increase on you. 23But Yahweh your God will deliver them up before you, and will confuse them with a great confusion, until they are destroyed. 24He will deliver their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under the sky. No one will be able to stand before you, until you have destroyed them. 25You shall burn the engraved images of their gods with fire. You shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourself, lest you be snared in it; for it is an abomination to Yahweh your God. 26You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and become a devoted thing like it. You shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.
1Wanneer u de HEERE, uw God, zal gebracht hebben in het land, waar gij naar toe gaat, om dat te erven; en Hij vele volken voor uw aangezicht zal hebben uitgeworpen, de Hethieten, en de Girgasieten, en de Amorieten, en de Kanaanieten, en de Ferezieten, en de Hevieten, en de Jebusieten, zeven volken, die meerder en machtiger zijn dan gij; 2En de HEERE, uw God, hen zal gegeven hebben voor uw aangezicht, dat gij ze slaat; zo zult gij hen ganselijk verbannen; gij zult geen verbond met hen maken, noch hun genadig zijn. 3Gij zult u ook met hen niet vermaagschappen; gij zult uw dochters niet geven aan hun zonen, en hun dochters niet nemen voor uw zonen. 4Want zij zouden uw zonen van Mij doen afwijken, dat zij andere goden zouden dienen; en de toorn des HEEREN zou tegen ulieden ontsteken, en u haast verdelgen. 5Maar alzo zult gij hun doen: hun altaren zult gij afwerpen, en hun opgerichte beelden verbreken, en hun bossen zult gij afhouwen, en hun gesnedene beelden met vuur verbranden. 6Want gij zijt een heilig volk den HEERE, uw God; u heeft de HEERE, uw God, verkoren, dat gij Hem tot een volk des eigendoms zoudt zijn uit alle volken, die op den aardbodem zijn. 7De HEERE heeft geen lust tot u gehad, noch u verkoren, om uw veelheid boven alle andere volken; want gij waart het weinigste van alle volken. 8Maar omdat de HEERE ulieden liefhad, en opdat Hij hield den eed, dien Hij uw vaderen gezworen had, heeft u de HEERE met een sterke hand uitgevoerd, en heeft u verlost uit het diensthuis, uit de hand van Farao, koning van Egypte. 9Gij zult dan weten, dat de HEERE, uw God, die God is, die getrouwe God, welke het verbond en de weldadigheid houdt dien, die Hem liefhebben, en Zijn geboden houden tot in duizend geslachten. 10En Hij vergeldt een ieder van hen, die Hem haten, in zijn aangezicht, om hem te verderven; Hij zal het Zijn hater niet vertrekken, in zijn aangezicht zal Hij het hem vergelden. 11Houdt dan de geboden, en de inzettingen, en de rechten, die ik u heden gebiede, om die te doen. 12Zo zal het geschieden, omdat gij deze rechten zult horen, en houden, en dezelve doen, dat de HEERE, uw God, u het verbond en de weldadigheid zal houden, die Hij uw vaderen gezworen heeft; 13En Hij zal u liefhebben, en zal u zegenen, en u doen vermenigvuldigen; en Hij zal zegenen de vrucht uws buiks, en de vrucht uws lands, uw koren, en uw most, en uw olie, de voortzetting uwer koeien, en de kudden van uw klein vee, in het land, dat Hij aan uw vaderen gezworen heeft u te geven. 14Gezegend zult gij zijn boven alle volken; er zal onder u noch man noch vrouw onvruchtbaar zijn, ook niet onder uw beesten; 15En de HEERE zal alle krankheid van u afweren, en Hij zal u geen van de kwade ziekten der Egyptenaren, die gij kent, opleggen, maar zal ze leggen op allen, die u haten. 16Gij zult dan al die volken verteren, die de HEERE, uw God, u geven zal; uw oog zal hen niet verschonen, en gij zult hun goden niet dienen; want dat zoude u een strik zijn. 17Zo gij in uw hart zeidet: Deze volken zijn meerder dan ik; hoe zou ik hen uit de bezitting kunnen verdrijven? 18Vreest niet voor hen; gedenkt steeds, wat de HEERE, uw God, aan Farao en aan alle Egyptenaren gedaan heeft; 19De grote verzoekingen, die uw ogen gezien hebben, en de tekenen, en de wonderen, en de sterke hand, en den uitgestrekten arm, door welken u de HEERE uw God, heeft uitgevoerd; alzo zal de HEERE, uw God, doen aan alle volken, voor welker aangezicht gij vreest. 20Daartoe zal de HEERE, uw God, ook horzelen onder hen zenden; totdat zij omkomen, die overgebleven, en voor uw aangezicht verborgen zijn. 21Ontzet u niet voor hunlieder aangezicht; want de HEERE, uw God, is in het midden van u, een groot en vreselijk God. 22En de HEERE, uw God, zal deze volken voor uw aangezicht allengskens uitwerpen; haastelijk zult gij hen niet mogen te niet doen, opdat het wild des velds niet tegen u vermenigvuldige. 23En de HEERE zal hen geven voor uw aangezicht, en Hij zal hen verschrikken met grote verschrikking, totdat zij verdelgd worden. 24Ook zal Hij hun koningen in uw hand geven, dat gij hun naam van onder den hemel te niet doet; geen man zal voor uw aangezicht bestaan, totdat gij hen zult hebben verdelgd. 25De gesneden beelden van hun goden zult gij met vuur verbranden; het zilver en goud, dat daaraan is, zult gij niet begeren, noch voor u nemen, opdat gij daardoor niet verstrikt wordt; want dat is den HEERE, uw God, een gruwel. 26Gij zult dan den gruwel in uw huis niet brengen, dat gij een ban zoudt worden, gelijk datzelve is; gij zult het ganselijk verfoeien, en te enenmaal een gruwel daarvan hebben, want het is een ban.
