1Ora, dunque, Israele, da’ ascolto alle leggi e alle prescrizioni che io v’insegno perché le mettiate in pratica, affinché viviate ed entriate in possesso del paese che l’Eterno, l’Iddio de’ vostri padri, vi dà. 2Non aggiungerete nulla a ciò che io vi comando, e non ne toglierete nulla; ma osserverete i comandamenti dell’Eterno Iddio vostro che io vi prescrivo. 3Gli occhi vostri videro ciò che l’Eterno fece nel caso di Baal-Peor: come l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, distrusse di mezzo a te tutti quelli ch’erano andati dietro a Baal-Peor: 4ma voi che vi teneste stretti all’Eterno, all’Iddio vostro, siete oggi tutti in vita. 5Ecco, io vi ho insegnato leggi e prescrizioni, come l’Eterno, l’Iddio mio, mi ha ordinato, affinché le mettiate in pratica nel paese nel quale state per entrare per prenderne possesso. 6Le osserverete dunque e li metterete in pratica; poiché quella sarà la vostra sapienza e la vostra intelligenza agli occhi dei popoli, i quali, udendo parlare di tutte queste leggi, diranno: "Questa grande nazione è il solo popolo savio e intelligente!" 7Qual è difatti la gran nazione alla quale la divinità sia così vicina come l’Eterno, l’Iddio nostro, è vicino a noi, ogni volta che l’invochiamo? 8E qual è la gran nazione che abbia delle leggi e delle prescrizioni giuste com’è tutta questa legge ch’io vi espongo quest’oggi? 9Soltanto, bada bene a te stesso e veglia diligentemente sull’anima tua, onde non avvenga che tu dimentichi le cose che gli occhi tuoi hanno vedute, ed esse non t’escano dal cuore finché ti duri la vita. Falle anzi sapere ai tuoi figliuoli e ai figliuoli de’ tuoi figliuoli. 10Ricordati del giorno che comparisti davanti all’Eterno, all’Iddio tuo, in Horeb, quando l’Eterno mi disse: "Adunami il popolo, e io farò loro udire le mie parole, ond’essi imparino a temermi tutto il tempo che vivranno sulla terra, e le insegnino ai loro figliuoli". 11E voi vi avvicinaste, e vi fermaste appiè del monte; e il monte era tutto in fiamme, che s’innalzavano fino al cielo; e v’eran tenebre, nuvole ed oscurità. 12E l’Eterno vi parlò di mezzo al fuoco; voi udiste il suono delle parole, ma non vedeste alcuna figura; non udiste che una voce. 13Ed egli vi promulgò il suo patto, che vi comandò di osservare, cioè le dieci parole; e le scrisse su due tavole di pietra. 14E a me, in quel tempo, l’Eterno ordinò d’insegnarvi leggi e prescrizioni, perché voi le metteste in pratica nel paese dove state per passare per prenderne possesso. 15Or dunque, siccome non vedeste alcuna figura il giorno che l’Eterno vi parlò in Horeb in mezzo al fuoco, vegliate diligentemente sulle anime vostre, 16affinché non vi corrompiate e vi facciate qualche immagine scolpita, la rappresentazione di qualche idolo, la figura d’un uomo o d’una donna, 17la figura di un animale tra quelli che son sulla terra, la figura d’un uccello che vola nei cieli, 18la figura d’una bestia che striscia sul suolo, la figura d’un pesce che vive nelle acque sotto la terra; 19ed anche affinché, alzando gli occhi al cielo e vedendo il sole, la luna, le stelle, tutto l’esercito celeste, tu non sia tratto a prostrarti davanti a quelle cose e ad offrir loro un culto. Quelle cose sono il retaggio che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, ha assegnato a tutti i popoli che sono sotto tutti i cieli; 20ma voi l’Eterno vi ha presi, v’ha tratti fuori dalla fornace di ferro, dall’Egitto, perché foste un popolo che gli appartenesse in proprio, come oggi difatti siete. 21Or l’Eterno s’adirò contro di me per cagion vostra, e giurò ch’io non passerei il Giordano e non entrerei nel buon paese che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, ti dà in eredità. 22Poiché, io dovrò morire in questo paese, senza passare il Giordano; ma voi lo passerete, e possederete quel buon paese. 23Guardatevi dal dimenticare il patto che l’Eterno, il vostro Dio, ha fermato con voi, e dal farvi alcuna immagine scolpita, o rappresentazione di qualsivoglia cosa che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, t’abbia proibita. 24Poiché l’Eterno, il tuo Dio, è un fuoco consumante, un Dio geloso. 25Quando avrai dei figliuoli e de’ figliuoli de’ tuoi figliuoli e sarete stati lungo tempo nel paese, se vi corrompete, se vi fate delle immagini scolpite, delle rappresentazioni di qualsivoglia cosa, se fate ciò ch’è male agli occhi dell’Eterno, ch’è l’Iddio vostro, per irritarlo, 26io chiamo oggi in testimonio contro di voi il cielo e la terra, che voi ben presto perirete, scomparendo dal paese di cui andate a prender possesso di là dal Giordano. Voi non vi prolungherete i vostri giorni, ma sarete interamente distrutti. 27E l’Eterno vi disperderà fra i popoli e non resterete più che un piccol numero fra le nazioni dove l’Eterno vi condurrà. 28E quivi servirete a dèi fatti da mano d’uomo, dèi di legno e di pietra, i quali non vedono, non odono, non mangiano, non fiutano. 29Ma di là cercherai l’Eterno, il tuo Dio; e lo troverai, se lo cercherai con tutto il tuo cuore e con tutta l’anima tua. 30Nell’angoscia tua, quando tutte queste cose ti saranno avvenute, negli ultimi tempi, tornerai all’Eterno, all’Iddio tuo, e darai ascolto alla sua voce; 31poiché l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, è un Dio pietoso; egli non ti abbandonerà e non ti distruggerà; non dimenticherà il patto che giurò ai tuoi padri. 32Interroga pure i tempi antichi, che furon prima di te, dal giorno che Dio creò l’uomo sulla terra, e da un’estremità de’ cieli all’altra: Ci fu egli mai cosa così grande come questa, e s’udì egli mai cosa simile a questa? 33ci fu egli mai popolo che udisse la voce di Dio parlante di mezzo al fuoco come l’hai udita tu, e che rimanesse vivo? 34ci fu egli mai un dio che provasse di venire a prendersi una nazione di mezzo a un’altra nazione mediante prove, segni, miracoli e battaglie, con mano potente e con braccio steso e con grandi terrori, come fece per voi l’Eterno, l’Iddio vostro, in Egitto, sotto i vostri occhi? 35Tu sei stato fatto testimone di queste cose affinché tu riconosca che l’Eterno è Dio, e che non ve n’è altri fuori di lui. 36Dal cielo t’ha fatto udire la sua voce per ammaestrarti; e sulla terra t’ha fatto vedere il suo gran fuoco, e tu hai udito le sue parole di mezzo al fuoco. 37E perch’egli ha amato i tuoi padri, ha scelto la loro progenie dopo loro, ed egli stesso, in persona, ti ha tratto dall’Egitto con la sua gran potenza, 38per cacciare d’innanzi a te nazioni più grandi e più potenti di te, per farti entrare nel loro paese e per dartene il possesso, come oggi si vede. 39Sappi dunque oggi e ritieni bene in cuor tuo che l’Eterno è Dio: lassù ne’ cieli, e quaggiù sulla terra; e che non ve n’è alcun altro. 40Osserva dunque le sue leggi e i suoi comandamenti che oggi ti do, affinché sii felice tu e i tuoi figliuoli dopo di te, e affinché tu prolunghi in perpetuo i tuoi giorni nel paese che l’Eterno, l’Iddio tuo, ti dà. 41Allora Mosè appartò tre città di là dal Giordano, verso oriente, 42perché servissero di rifugio all’omicida che avesse ucciso il suo prossimo involontariamente, senz’averlo odiato per l’addietro, e perch’egli potesse aver salva la vita, ricoverandosi in una di quelle città. 43Esse furono Betser, nel deserto, nella regione piana, per i Rubeniti; Ramoth, in Galaad, per i Gaditi, e Golan, in Basan, per i Manassiti. 44Or questa è la legge che Mosè espose ai figliuoli d’Israele. 45Queste sono le istruzioni, le leggi e le prescrizioni che Mosè dette ai figliuoli d’Israele quando furono usciti dall’Egitto, 46di là dal Giordano, nella valle, dirimpetto Beth-Peor, nel paese di Sihon, re degli Amorei che dimorava a Heshbon, e che Mosè e i figliuoli d’Israele sconfissero quando furono usciti dall’Egitto. 47Essi s’impossessarono del paese di lui e del paese di Og re di Basan due re degli Amorei, che stavano di là dal Giordano, verso oriente, 48da Aroer, che è sull’orlo della valle dell’Arnon, fino al monte Sion, che è lo Hermon, 49con tutta la pianura oltre il Giordano, verso oriente, fino al mare della pianura appiè delle pendici del Pisga.
1Now, Israel, listen to the statutes and to the ordinances, which I teach you, to do them; that you may live, and go in and possess the land which Yahweh, the God of your fathers, gives you. 2You shall not add to the word which I command you, neither shall you take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God which I command you. 3Your eyes have seen what Yahweh did because of Baal Peor; for all the men who followed Baal Peor, Yahweh your God has destroyed them from among you. 4But you who were faithful to Yahweh your God are all alive this day. 5Behold, I have taught you statutes and ordinances, even as Yahweh my God commanded me, that you should do so in the midst of the land where you go in to possess it. 6Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who shall hear all these statutes, and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” 7For what great nation is there, that has a god so near to them, as Yahweh our God is whenever we call on him? 8What great nation is there, that has statutes and ordinances so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? 9Only be careful, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things which your eyes saw, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your children and your children’s children; 10the day that you stood before Yahweh your God in Horeb, when Yahweh said to me, “Assemble the people to me, and I will make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children.” 11You came near and stood under the mountain. The mountain burned with fire to the heart of the sky, with darkness, cloud, and thick darkness. 12Yahweh spoke to you out of the midst of the fire: you heard the voice of words, but you saw no form; you only heard a voice. 13He declared to you his covenant, which he commanded you to perform, even the ten commandments. He wrote them on two stone tablets. 14Yahweh commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and ordinances, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it. 15Be very careful, for you saw no kind of form on the day that Yahweh spoke to you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire, 16lest you corrupt yourselves, and make yourself an engraved image in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, 17the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the sky, 18the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth; 19and lest you lift up your eyes to the sky, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the army of the sky, you are drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which Yahweh your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole sky. 20But Yahweh has taken you, and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to him a people of inheritance, as at this day. 21Furthermore Yahweh was angry with me for your sakes, and swore that I should not go over the Jordan, and that I should not go in to that good land, which Yahweh your God gives you for an inheritance; 22but I must die in this land. I must not go over the Jordan; but you shall go over, and possess that good land. 23Be careful, lest you forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he made with you, and make yourselves an engraved image in the form of anything which Yahweh your God has forbidden you. 24For Yahweh your God is a devouring fire, a jealous God. 25When you shall father children, and children’s children, and you shall have been long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make an engraved image in the form of anything, and shall do that which is evil in the sight of Yahweh your God, to provoke him to anger; 26I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that you will soon utterly perish from off the land which you go over the Jordan to possess it. You will not prolong your days on it, but will utterly be destroyed. 27Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations, where Yahweh will lead you away. 28There you shall serve gods, the work of men’s hands, wood and stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell. 29But from there you shall seek Yahweh your God, and you shall find him, when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30When you are in oppression, and all these things have come on you, in the latter days you shall return to Yahweh your God, and listen to his voice. 31For Yahweh your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them. 32For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and from the one end of the sky to the other, whether there has been anything as this great thing is, or has been heard like it? 33Did a people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live? 34Or has God tried to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand, by an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35It was shown to you so that you might know that Yahweh is God. There is no one else besides him. 36Out of heaven he made you to hear his voice, that he might instruct you. On earth he made you to see his great fire; and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire. 37Because he loved your fathers, therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt; 38to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day. 39Know therefore this day, and lay it to your heart, that Yahweh himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath. There is no one else. 40You shall keep his statutes, and his commandments, which I command you this day, that it may go well with you, and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land, which Yahweh your God gives you, forever. 41Then Moses set apart three cities beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise; 42that the man slayer might flee there, who kills his neighbor unawares, and didn’t hate him in time past; and that fleeing to one of these cities he might live: 43Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain country, for the Reubenites; and Ramoth in Gilead, for the Gadites; and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites. 44This is the law which Moses set before the children of Israel. 45These are the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which Moses spoke to the children of Israel, when they came out of Egypt, 46beyond the Jordan, in the valley over against Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel struck, when they came out of Egypt. 47They took his land in possession, and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise; 48from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of the Arnon, even to Mount Sion (the same is Hermon), 49and all the Arabah beyond the Jordan eastward, even to the sea of the Arabah, under the slopes of Pisgah.
1Nu dan, Israel! hoor naar de inzettingen en naar de rechten, die ik ulieden lere te doen; opdat gij leeft, en henen inkomt, en erft het land, dat de HEERE, uwer vaderen God, u geeft. 2Gij zult tot dit woord, dat ik u gebiede, niet toedoen, ook daarvan niet afdoen; opdat gij bewaart de geboden van den HEERE, uw God, die ik u gebiede. 3Uw ogen hebben gezien, wat God om Baal-Peor gedaan heeft; want alle man, die Baal-Peor navolgde, dien heeft de HEERE, uw God, uit het midden van u verdaan. 4Gij daarentegen, die den HEERE, uw God, aanhingt, gij zijt heden allen levende. 5Ziet, ik heb u geleerd de inzettingen en rechten, gelijk als de HEERE, mijn God, mij geboden heeft; opdat gij alzo doet in het midden des lands, waar gij naar toe gaat, om het te erven. 6Behoudt ze dan, en doet ze; want dat zal uw wijsheid en uw verstand zijn voor de ogen der volken, die al deze inzettingen horen zullen, en zeggen: Dit groot volk alleen is een wijs en verstandig volk! 7Want wat groot volk is er, hetwelk de goden zo nabij zijn als de HEERE, onze God, zo dikwijls als wij Hem aanroepen? 8En wat groot volk is er, dat zo rechtvaardige inzettingen en rechten heeft, als deze ganse wet is, die ik heden voor uw aangezicht geef? 9Alleenlijk wacht u, en bewaart uw ziel wel, dat gij niet vergeet de dingen, die uw ogen gezien hebben; en dat zij niet van uw hart wijken, al de dagen uws levens; en gij zult ze aan uw kinderen en uw kindskinderen bekend maken. 10Ten dage, als gij voor het aangezicht des HEEREN, uws Gods, aan Horeb stondt, als de HEERE tot mij zeide: Vergader Mij dit volk, en Ik zal hun Mijn woorden doen horen, die zij zullen leren, om Mij te vrezen al de dagen, die zij op den aardbodem zullen leven, en zij zullen ze hun kinderen leren; 11En gijlieden naderdet en stondt beneden dien berg; (die berg nu brandde van vuur, tot aan het midden des hemels; er was duisternis, wolken en donkerheid). 12Zo sprak de HEERE tot u uit het midden des vuurs; gij hoordet de stem der woorden; maar gij zaagt geen gelijkenis, behalve de stem. 13Toen verkondigde Hij u Zijn verbond, dat Hij u gebood te doen, de tien woorden, en schreef ze op twee stenen tafelen. 14Ook gebood mij de HEERE ter zelver tijd, dat ik u inzettingen en rechten leren zou; opdat gij die deedt in dat land, naar hetwelk gij doortrekt, om dat te erven. 15Wacht u dan wel voor uw zielen; want gij hebt geen gelijkenis gezien, ten dage als de HEERE op Horeb uit het midden des vuurs tot u sprak; 16Opdat gij u niet verderft, en maakt u iets gesnedens, de gelijkenis van enig beeld, van mannelijk of vrouwelijk gedaante, 17De gedaante van enig beest, dat op de aarde is; de gedaante van enigen gevleugelden vogel, die door den hemel vliegt; 18De gedaante van iets, dat op den aardbodem kruipt; de gedaante van enigen vis, die in het water is onder de aarde; 19Dat gij ook uw ogen niet opheft naar den hemel, en aanziet de zon, en de maan, en de sterren, des hemels ganse heir; en wordt aangedreven, dat gij u voor die buigt, en hen dient; dewelke de HEERE uw God, aan alle volken onder den gansen hemel heeft uitgedeeld. 20Maar ulieden heeft de HEERE aangenomen, en uit den ijzeroven, uit Egypte, uitgevoerd; opdat gij Hem tot een erfvolk zoudt zijn, gelijk het te dezen dage is. 21Ook vertoornde Zich de HEERE over mij, om ulieder woorden; en Hij zwoer, dat ik over de Jordaan niet zou gaan, en dat ik niet zou komen in dat goede land, dat de HEERE, uw God, u ter erfenis geven zal. 22Want ik zal in dit land sterven; ik zal over de Jordaan niet gaan; maar gij zult er overgaan, en datzelve goede land erven. 23Wacht u, dat gij het verbond des HEEREN, uws Gods, hetwelk Hij met u gemaakt heeft, niet vergeet, dat gij u een gesneden beeld zoudt maken, de gelijkenis van iets, dat de HEERE, uw God, u verboden heeft. 24Want de HEERE, uw God, is een verterend vuur, een ijverig God. 25Wanneer gij nu kinderen en kindskinderen gewonnen zult hebben, en in het land oud geworden zult zijn, en u zult verderven, dat gij gesneden beelden maakt, de gelijkenis van enig ding, en doet, wat kwaad is in de ogen des HEEREN, uws Gods, om Hem tot toorn te verwekken; 26Zo roep ik heden den hemel en de aarde tot getuige tegen ulieden, dat gij voorzeker haast zult omkomen van dat land, waar gij over de Jordaan naar toe trekt, om dat te erven; gij zult uw dagen daarin niet verlengen, maar ganselijk verdelgd worden. 27En de HEERE zal u verstrooien onder de volken; en gij zult een klein volksken in getal overblijven onder de heidenen, waar de HEERE u henen leiden zal. 28En aldaar zult gij goden dienen, die des mensen handenwerk zijn, hout en steen, die niet zien, noch horen, noch eten, noch rieken. 29Dan zult gij van daar den HEERE, uw God, zoeken, en vinden; als gij Hem zoeken zult met uw ganse hart en met uw ganse ziel. 30Wanneer gij in angst zult zijn, en u al deze dingen zullen treffen; in het laatste der dagen, dan zult gij wederkeren tot den HEERE, uw God, en Zijn stem gehoorzaam zijn. 31Want de HEERE, uw God, is een barmhartig God; Hij zal u niet verlaten, noch u verderven; en Hij zal het verbond uwer vaderen, dat Hij hun gezworen heeft, niet vergeten. 32Want, vraag toch naar de vorige dagen, die voor u geweest zijn, van dien dag af, dat God den mens op de aarde geschapen heeft, van het ene einde des hemels tot aan het andere einde des hemels, of zulk een groot ding geschied of gehoord zij, als dit: 33Of een volk gehoord hebbe de stem van God, sprekende uit het midden des vuurs, gelijk als gij gehoord hebt, en levend zij gebleven? 34Of: of God verzocht heeft te gaan, om Zich een volk uit het midden eens volks aan te nemen, door verzoekingen, door tekenen, en door wonderen, en door strijd, en door een sterke hand, en door een uitgestrekten arm, en met grote verschrikkingen; naar al hetgeen de HEERE, uw God, ulieden voor uw ogen in Egypte gedaan heeft? 35U is het getoond, opdat gij wetet, dat de HEERE die God is; er is niemand meer dan Hij alleen! 36Van den hemel heeft Hij u Zijn stem laten horen, om u te onderwijzen; en op de aarde heeft Hij u Zijn groot vuur doen zien; en gij hebt Zijn woorden uit het midden des vuurs gehoord. 37En omdat Hij uw vaderen liefhad, en hun zaad na hen verkoren had, zo heeft Hij u voor Zijn aangezicht door Zijn grote kracht uit Egypte uitgevoerd; 38Om volken, die groter en machtiger waren dan gij, voor uw aangezicht uit de bezitting te verdrijven; om u in te brengen, dat Hij u hunlieder land ter erfenis gave, als het te dezen dage is. 39Zo zult gij heden weten, en in uw hart hervatten, dat de HEERE die God is, boven in den hemel, en onder op de aarde, niemand meer! 40En gij zult houden Zijn inzettingen en Zijn geboden, die ik u heden gebiede, opdat het u en uw kinderen na u welga, en opdat gij de dagen verlengt in het land, dat de HEERE, uw God, u geeft, voor altoos. 41Toen scheidde Mozes drie steden uit, aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, tegen den opgang der zon; 42Opdat daarheen vlood de doodslager, die zijn naaste onwetende doodslaat, dien hij van gisteren en eergisteren niet haatte; dat hij in een van deze steden vlood en levend bleef; 43Bezer in de woestijn, in het effen land, voor de Rubenieten; en Ramoth in Gilead, voor de Gadieten; en Golan in Bazan, voor de Manassieten. 44Dit is nu de wet, die Mozes de kinderen Israels voorstelde: 45Dit zijn de getuigenissen, en de inzettingen, en de rechten, die Mozes sprak tot de kinderen Israels, als zij uit Egypte waren uitgetogen; 46Aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, in het dal tegenover Beth-Peor, in het land van Sihon, den koning der Amorieten, die te Hesbon woonde; welken Mozes sloeg, en de kinderen Israels, als zij uit Egypte waren uitgetogen, 47En zijn land in bezitting genomen hadden; daartoe het land van Og, koning van Bazan; twee koningen der Amorieten, die aan deze zijde van de Jordaan waren, tegen den opgang der zon; 48Van Aroer af, dat aan den oever der beek Arnon is, tot aan den berg Sion, welke is Hermon; 49En al het vlakke veld, aan deze zijde van de Jordaan, naar het oosten, tot aan de zee des vlakken velds, onder Asdoth-Pisga.
