1Israël demeurait à Sittim ; et le peuple commença à se livrer à la débauche avec les filles de Moab. 2Elles invitèrent le peuple aux sacrifices de leurs dieux ; et le peuple mangea, et se prosterna devant leurs dieux. 3Israël s’attacha à Baal-Peor, et la colère de l’Éternel s’enflamma contre Israël. 4L’Éternel dit à Moïse : Assemble tous les chefs du peuple, et fais pendre les coupables devant l’Éternel en face du soleil, afin que la colère ardente de l’Éternel se détourne d’Israël. 5Moïse dit aux juges d’Israël : Que chacun de vous tue ceux de ses gens qui se sont attachés à Baal-Peor. 6Et voici, un homme des enfants d’Israël vint et amena vers ses frères une Madianite, sous les yeux de Moïse et sous les yeux de toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, tandis qu’ils pleuraient à l’entrée de la tente d’assignation. 7À cette vue, Phinées, fils d’Éléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, se leva du milieu de l’assemblée, et prit une lance, dans sa main. 8Il suivit l’homme d’Israël dans sa tente, et il les perça tous les deux, l’homme d’Israël, puis la femme, par le bas-ventre. Et la plaie s’arrêta parmi les enfants d’Israël. 9Il y en eut vingt-quatre mille qui moururent de la plaie. 10L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit : 11Phinées, fils d’Éléazar, fils du sacrificateur Aaron, a détourné ma fureur de dessus les enfants d’Israël, parce qu’il a été animé de mon zèle au milieu d’eux ; et je n’ai point, dans ma colère, consumé les enfants d’Israël. 12C’est pourquoi tu diras que je traite avec lui une alliance de paix. 13Ce sera pour lui et pour sa postérité après lui l’alliance d’un sacerdoce perpétuel, parce qu’il a été zélé pour son Dieu, et qu’il a fait l’expiation pour les enfants d’Israël. 14L’homme d’Israël, qui fut tué avec la Madianite, s’appelait Zimri, fils de Salu ; il était chef d’une maison paternelle des Siméonites. 15La femme qui fut tuée, la Madianite, s’appelait Cozbi, fille de Tsur, chef des peuplades issues d’une maison paternelle en Madian. 16L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit : 17Traite les Madianites en ennemis, et tuez-les ; 18car ils se sont montrés vos ennemis, en vous séduisant par leurs ruses, dans l’affaire de Peor, et dans l’affaire de Cozbi, fille d’un chef de Madian, leur sœur, tuée le jour de la plaie qui eut lieu à l’occasion de Peor.
1Israel stayed in Shittim; and the people began to play the prostitute with the daughters of Moab; 2for they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods. The people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3Israel joined himself to Baal Peor. Yahweh’s anger was kindled against Israel. 4Yahweh said to Moses, “Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up to Yahweh before the sun, that the fierce anger of Yahweh may turn away from Israel.” 5Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Everyone kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal Peor.” 6Behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 7When Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand. 8He went after the man of Israel into the pavilion, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9Those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand. 10Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 11“Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, in that he was jealous with my jealousy among them, so that I didn’t consume the children of Israel in my jealousy. 12Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him my covenant of peace. 13It shall be to him, and to his seed after him, the covenant of an everlasting priesthood, because he was jealous for his God, and made atonement for the children of Israel.’” 14Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianite woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites. 15The name of the Midianite woman who was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur. He was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian. 16Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 17“Harass the Midianites, and strike them, 18for they harassed you with their wiles, with which they have deceived you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain on the day of the plague in the matter of Peor.”
1En Israel verbleef te Sittim, en het volk begon te hoereren met de dochteren der Moabieten. 2En zij nodigden het volk tot de slachtofferen harer goden; en het volk at, en boog zich voor haar goden. 3Als nu Israel zich koppelde aan Baal-Peor, ontstak de toorn des HEEREN tegen Israel. 4En de HEERE zeide tot Mozes: Neem alle hoofden des volks, en hang ze den HEERE tegen de zon, zo zal de hittigheid van des HEEREN toorn gekeerd worden van Israel. 5Toen zeide Mozes tot de rechters van Israel: Een iedere dode zijn mannen, die zich aan Baal-Peor gekoppeld hebben! 6En ziet, een man uit de kinderen Israels kwam, en bracht een Midianietin tot zijn broederen voor de ogen van Mozes, en voor de ogen van de ganse vergadering der kinderen Israels, toen zij weenden voor de deur van de tent der samenkomst. 7Toen Pinehas, de zoon van Eleazar, den zoon van Aaron, den priester, dat zag, zo stond hij op uit het midden der vergadering, en nam een spies in zijn hand; 8En hij ging den Israelietischen man na in de hoerenwinkel, en doorstak hen beiden, den Israelietischen man en de vrouw, door hun buik. Toen werd de plaag van over de kinderen Israels opgehouden. 9Degenen nu, die aan de plaag stierven, waren vier en twintig duizend. 10Toen sprak de HEERE tot Mozes, zeggende: 11Pinehas, de zoon van Eleazar, den zoon van Aaron, den priester, heeft Mijn grimmigheid van over de kinderen Israels afgewend, dewijl hij Mijn ijver geijverd heeft in het midden derzelve, zodat Ik de kinderen Israels in Mijn ijver niet vernield heb. 12Daarom spreek: Zie, Ik geef hem Mijn verbond des vredes. 13En hij zal hebben, en zijn zaad na hem, het verbond des eeuwigen priesterdoms, daarom dat hij voor zijn God geijverd, en verzoening gedaan heeft voor de kinderen Israels. 14De naam nu des verslagenen Israelietischen mans, die verslagen was met de Midianietin, was Zimri, de zoon van Salu, een overste van een vaderlijk huis der Simeonieten. 15En de naam der verslagene Midianietische vrouw was Kozbi, een dochter van Zur, die een hoofd was der volken van een vaderlijk huis onder de Midianieten. 16Verder sprak de HEERE tot Mozes, zeggende: 17Handel vijandelijk met de Midianieten, en versla hen; 18Want zij hebben vijandelijk tegen ulieden gehandeld door hun listen, die zij listig tegen u bedacht hebben in de zaak van Peor, en in de zaak van Kozbi, de dochter van den overste der Midianieten, hun zuster, die verslagen is, ten dage der plaag, om de zaak van Peor.
