1L’Éternel parla à Moïse, et dit : 2Envoie des hommes pour explorer le pays de Canaan, que je donne aux enfants d’Israël. Tu enverras un homme de chacune des tribus de leurs pères ; tous seront des principaux d’entre eux. 3Moïse les envoya du désert de Paran, d’après l’ordre de l’Éternel ; tous ces hommes étaient chefs des enfants d’Israël. 4Voici leurs noms. Pour la tribu de Ruben : Schammua, fils de Zaccur ; 5pour la tribu de Siméon : Schaphath, fils de Hori ; 6pour la tribu de Juda : Caleb, fils de Jephunné ; 7pour la tribu d’Issacar : Jigual, fils de Joseph ; 8pour la tribu d’Éphraïm : Hosée, fils de Nun ; 9pour la tribu de Benjamin : Palthi, fils de Raphu ; 10pour la tribu de Zabulon : Gaddiel, fils de Sodi ; 11pour la tribu de Joseph, la tribu de Manassé : Gaddi, fils de Susi ; 12pour la tribu de Dan : Ammiel, fils de Guemalli ; 13pour la tribu d’Aser : Sethur, fils de Micaël ; 14pour la tribu de Nephthali : Nachbi, fils de Vophsi ; 15pour la tribu de Gad : Guéuel, fils de Maki. 16Tels sont les noms des hommes que Moïse envoya pour explorer le pays. Moïse donna à Hosée, fils de Nun, le nom de Josué. 17Moïse les envoya pour explorer le pays de Canaan. Il leur dit : Montez ici, par le midi ; et vous monterez sur la montagne. 18Vous verrez le pays, ce qu’il est, et le peuple qui l’habite, s’il est fort ou faible, s’il est en petit ou en grand nombre ; 19ce qu’est le pays où il habite, s’il est bon ou mauvais ; ce que sont les villes où il habite, si elles sont ouvertes ou fortifiées ; 20ce qu’est le terrain, s’il est gras ou maigre, s’il y a des arbres ou s’il n’y en a point. Ayez bon courage, et prenez des fruits du pays. C’était le temps des premiers raisins. 21Ils montèrent, et ils explorèrent le pays, depuis le désert de Tsin jusqu’à Rehob, sur le chemin de Hamath. 22Ils montèrent, par le midi, et ils allèrent jusqu’à Hébron, où étaient Ahiman, Schéschaï et Talmaï, enfants d’Anak. Hébron avait été bâtie sept ans avant Tsoan en Égypte. 23Ils arrivèrent jusqu’à la vallée d’Eschcol, où ils coupèrent une branche de vigne avec une grappe de raisin, qu’ils portèrent à deux au moyen d’une perche ; ils prirent aussi des grenades et des figues. 24On donna à ce lieu le nom de vallée d’Eschcol, à cause de la grappe que les enfants d’Israël y coupèrent. 25Ils furent de retour de l’exploration du pays au bout de quarante jours. 26À leur arrivée, ils se rendirent auprès de Moïse et d’Aaron, et de toute l’assemblée des enfants d’Israël, à Kadès dans le désert de Paran. Ils leur firent un rapport, ainsi qu’à toute l’assemblée, et ils leur montrèrent les fruits du pays. 27Voici ce qu’ils racontèrent à Moïse : Nous sommes allés dans le pays où tu nous as envoyés. À la vérité, c’est un pays où coulent le lait et le miel, et en voici les fruits. 28Mais le peuple qui habite ce pays est puissant, les villes sont fortifiées, très grandes ; nous y avons vu des enfants d’Anak. 29Les Amalécites habitent la contrée du midi ; les Héthiens, les Jébusiens et les Amoréens habitent la montagne ; et les Cananéens habitent près de la mer et le long du Jourdain. 30Caleb fit taire le peuple, qui murmurait contre Moïse. Il dit : Montons, emparons-nous du pays, nous y serons vainqueurs ! 31Mais les hommes qui y étaient allés avec lui dirent : Nous ne pouvons pas monter contre ce peuple, car il est plus fort que nous. 32Et ils décrièrent devant les enfants d’Israël le pays qu’ils avaient exploré. Ils dirent : Le pays que nous avons parcouru, pour l’explorer, est un pays qui dévore ses habitants ; tous ceux que nous y avons vus sont des hommes d’une haute taille ; 33et nous y avons vu les géants, enfants d’Anak, de la race des géants : nous étions à nos yeux et aux leurs comme des sauterelles.
1Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2“Send men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give to the children of Israel. Of every tribe of their fathers, you shall send a man, every one a prince among them.” 3Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of Yahweh. All of them were men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4These were their names: Of the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori. 6Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 7Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph. 8Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. 9Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu. 10Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi. 11Of the tribe of Joseph, of the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi. 12Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli. 13Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14Of the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15Of the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16These are the names of the men who Moses sent to spy out the land. Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, “Go up this way by the South, and go up into the hill country. 18See the land, what it is; and the people who dwell therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many; 19and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds; 20and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. Be courageous, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes. 21So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin to Rehob, to the entrance of Hamath. 22They went up by the South, and came to Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) 23They came to the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it on a staff between two. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. 24That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from there. 25They returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26They went and came to Moses, to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them and to all the congregation. They showed them the fruit of the land. 27They told him, and said, “We came to the land where you sent us. Surely it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28However the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large. Moreover, we saw the children of Anak there. 29Amalek dwells in the land of the South. The Hittite, the Jebusite, and the Amorite dwell in the hill country. The Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along the side of the Jordan.” 30Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it!” 31But the men who went up with him said, “We aren’t able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.” 32They brought up an evil report of the land which they had spied out to the children of Israel, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that eats up its inhabitants; and all the people who we saw in it are men of great stature. 33There we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim. We were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.”

Die dagen nu waren de dagen der eerste vruchten van de wijndruiven. 21Alzo trokken zij op, en verspiedden het land, van de woestijn Zin af tot Rechob toe, waar men gaat naar Hamath. 22En zij trokken op in het zuiden, en kwamen tot Hebron toe en daar waren Ahiman, Sesai en Talmai, kinderen van Enak; Hebron nu was zeven jaren gebouwd voor Zoan in Egypte. 23Daarna kwamen zij tot het dal Eskol, en sneden van daar een rank af met een tros wijndruiven, dien zij droegen met tweeen, op een draagstok; ook van de granaatappelen en van de vijgen. 24Diezelve plaats noemde men het dal Eskol, ter oorzake van den tros, dien de kinderen Israels van daar afgesneden hadden. 25Daarna keerden zij weder van het verspieden des lands, ten einde van veertig dagen. 26En zij gingen heen, en kwamen tot Mozes en tot Aaron, en tot de gehele vergadering der kinderen Israels, in de woestijn Paran, naar Kades; en brachten bescheid weder aan hen, en aan de gehele vergadering, en lieten hen de vrucht des lands zien. 27En zij vertelden hem, en zeiden: Wij zijn gekomen tot dat land, waarheen gij ons gezonden hebt; en voorwaar, het is van melk en honig vloeiende, en dit is zijn vrucht. 28Behalve dat het een sterk volk is, hetwelk in dat land woont, en de steden zijn vast, en zeer groot; en ook hebben wij daar kinderen van Enak gezien. 29De Amalekieten wonen in het land van het zuiden; maar de Hethieten, en de Jebusieten, en de Amorieten wonen op het gebergte; en de Kanaanieten wonen aan de zee, en aan den oever van de Jordaan. 30Toen stilde Kaleb het volk voor Mozes, en zeide: Laat ons vrijmoedig optrekken, en dat erfelijk bezitten; want wij zullen dat voorzeker overweldigen! 31Maar de mannen, die met hem opgetrokken waren, zeiden: Wij zullen tot dat volk niet kunnen optrekken, want het is sterker dan wij. 32Alzo brachten zij een kwaad gerucht voort van het land, dat zij verspied hadden, aan de kinderen Israels, zeggende: Dat land, door hetwelk wij doorgegaan zijn, om het te verspieden, is een land, dat zijn inwoners verteert; en al het volk, hetwelk wij in het midden van hetzelve gezien hebben, zijn mannen van grote lengte. 33Wij hebben ook daar de reuzen gezien, en de kinderen van Enak, van de reuzen; en wij waren als sprinkhanen in onze ogen, alzo waren wij ook in hun ogen.
