1La parole de l’Éternel me fut adressée, en ces mots : 2Pourquoi dites-vous ce proverbe dans le pays d’Israël : Les pères ont mangé des raisins verts, et les dents des enfants en ont été agacées ? 3Je suis vivant ! dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel, vous n’aurez plus lieu de dire ce proverbe en Israël. 4Voici, toutes les âmes sont à moi ; l’âme du fils comme l’âme du père, l’une et l’autre sont à moi ; l’âme qui pèche, c’est celle qui mourra. 5L’homme qui est juste, qui pratique la droiture et la justice, 6qui ne mange pas sur les montagnes et ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël, qui ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain et ne s’approche pas d’une femme pendant son impureté, 7qui n’opprime personne, qui rend au débiteur son gage, qui ne commet point de rapines, qui donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu, 8qui ne prête pas à intérêt et ne tire point d’usure, qui détourne sa main de l’iniquité et juge selon la vérité entre un homme et un autre, 9qui suit mes lois et observe mes ordonnances en agissant avec fidélité, celui-là est juste, il vivra, dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel. 10S’il a un fils qui soit violent, qui répande le sang, ou qui commette quelque chose de semblable ; 11si ce fils n’imite en rien la conduite de son père, s’il mange sur les montagnes, s’il déshonore la femme de son prochain, 12s’il opprime le malheureux et l’indigent, s’il commet des rapines, s’il ne rend pas le gage, s’il lève les yeux vers les idoles et fait des abominations, 13S’il prête à intérêt et tire une usure, ce fils-là vivrait ! Il ne vivra pas ; il a commis toutes ces abominations ; qu’il meure ! que son sang retombe sur lui ! 14Mais si un homme a un fils qui voie tous les péchés que commet son père, qui les voie et n’agisse pas de la même manière ; 15si ce fils ne mange pas sur les montagnes et ne lève pas les yeux vers les idoles de la maison d’Israël, s’il ne déshonore pas la femme de son prochain, 16s’il n’opprime personne, s’il ne prend point de gage, s’il ne commet point de rapines, s’il donne son pain à celui qui a faim et couvre d’un vêtement celui qui est nu, 17s’il détourne sa main de l’iniquité, s’il n’exige ni intérêt ni usure, s’il observe mes ordonnances et suit mes lois, celui-là ne mourra pas pour l’iniquité de son père ; il vivra. 18C’est son père, qui a été un oppresseur, qui a commis des rapines envers les autres, qui a fait au milieu de son peuple ce qui n’est pas bien, c’est lui qui mourra pour son iniquité. 19Vous dites : Pourquoi le fils ne porte-t-il pas l’iniquité de son père ? C’est que le fils a agi selon la droiture et la justice, c’est qu’il a observé et mis en pratique toutes mes lois ; il vivra. 20L’âme qui pèche, c’est celle qui mourra. Le fils ne portera pas l’iniquité de son père, et le père ne portera pas l’iniquité de son fils. La justice du juste sera sur lui, et la méchanceté du méchant sera sur lui. 21Si le méchant revient de tous les péchés qu’il a commis, s’il observe toutes mes lois et pratique la droiture et la justice, il vivra, il ne mourra pas. 22Toutes les transgressions qu’il a commises seront oubliées ; il vivra, à cause de la justice qu’il a pratiquée. 23Ce que je désire, est-ce que le méchant meure ? dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel. N’est-ce pas qu’il change de conduite et qu’il vive ? 24Si le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet l’iniquité, s’il imite toutes les abominations du méchant, vivra-t-il ? Toute sa justice sera oubliée, parce qu’il s’est livré à l’iniquité et au péché ; à cause de cela, il mourra. 25Vous dites : La voie du Seigneur n’est pas droite. Écoutez donc, maison d’Israël ! Est-ce ma voie qui n’est pas droite ? Ne sont-ce pas plutôt vos voies qui ne sont pas droites ? 26Si le juste se détourne de sa justice et commet l’iniquité, et meurt pour cela, il meurt à cause de l’iniquité qu’il a commise. 27Si le méchant revient de sa méchanceté et pratique la droiture et la justice, il fera vivre son âme. 28S’il ouvre les yeux et se détourne de toutes les transgressions qu’il a commises, il vivra, il ne mourra pas. 29La maison d’Israël dit : La voie du Seigneur n’est pas droite. Est-ce ma voie qui n’est pas droite, maison d’Israël ? Ne sont-ce pas plutôt vos voies qui ne sont pas droites ? 30C’est pourquoi je vous jugerai chacun selon ses voies, maison d’Israël, dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel. Revenez et détournez-vous de toutes vos transgressions, afin que l’iniquité ne cause pas votre ruine. 31Rejetez loin de vous toutes les transgressions par lesquelles vous avez péché ; faites-vous un cœur nouveau et un esprit nouveau. Pourquoi mourriez-vous, maison d’Israël ? 32Car je ne désire pas la mort de celui qui meurt, dit le Seigneur, l’Éternel. Convertissez-vous donc, et vivez.
1Yahweh’s word came to me again, saying, 2What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 3As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not use this proverb any more in Israel. 4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins, he shall die. 5But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right, 6and has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor’s wife, neither has come near to a woman in her impurity, 7and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 8he who has not lent on interest, neither has taken any increase, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man, 9has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh. 10If he fathers a son who is a robber who sheds blood, and who does any one of these things, 11or who does not do any of those things, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife, 12has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination, 13has lent on interest, and has taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him. 14Now, behold, if he fathers a son, who sees all his father’s sins, which he has done, and fears, and does not such like; 15who has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, has not defiled his neighbor’s wife, 16neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to pledge, neither has taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 17who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who has not received interest nor increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity. 19Yet you say, Why doesn’t the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live. 20The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him. 21But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? says the Lord Yahweh; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live? 24But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die. 25Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal? 26When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies therein; in his iniquity that he has done shall he die. 27Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29Yet the house of Israel says, “The way of the Lord is not fair.” House of Israel, aren’t my ways fair? Aren’t your ways unfair? 30Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make yourself a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel? 32For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Yahweh: therefore turn yourselves, and live.
1Verder geschiedde des HEEREN woord tot mij, zeggende: 2Wat is ulieden, dat gij dit spreekwoord gebruikt van het land Israels, zeggende: De vaders hebben onrijpe druiven gegeten, en de tanden der kinderen zijn stomp geworden? 3Zo waarachtig als Ik leef, spreekt de Heere HEERE, zo het ulieden meer gebeuren zal, dit spreekwoord in Israel te gebruiken! 4Ziet, alle zielen zijn Mijne; gelijk de ziel des vaders, alzo ook de ziel des zoons, zijn Mijne; de ziel, die zondigt, die zal sterven. 5Wanneer nu iemand rechtvaardig is, en doet recht en gerechtigheid; 6Niet eet op de bergen, en zijn ogen niet opheft tot de drekgoden van het huis Israels; noch de huisvrouw zijns naasten verontreinigt, noch tot de afgezonderde vrouw nadert; 7En niemand verdrukt, den schuldenaar zijn pand wedergeeft, geen roof rooft, den hongerige zijn brood geeft, en den naakte met kleding bedekt; 8Niet geeft op woeker, noch overwinst neemt, zijn hand van onrecht afkeert, waarachtig recht tussen den een en den anderen oefent; 9In Mijn inzettingen wandelt, en Mijn rechten onderhoudt, om trouwelijk te handelen; die rechtvaardige zal gewisselijk leven, spreekt de Heere HEERE. 10Heeft hij nu een zoon gewonnen, die een inbreker is, die bloed vergiet, die zijn broeder doet een van deze dingen; 11En die al die dingen niet doet; maar eet ook op de bergen, en verontreinigt de huisvrouw zijns naasten; 12Verdrukt den ellendige en den nooddruftige, rooft veel roofs, geeft het pand niet weder, en heft zijn ogen op tot de drekgoden, doet gruwel; 13Geeft op woeker, en neemt overwinst; zou die leven? Hij zal niet leven, al die gruwelen heeft hij gedaan; hij zal voorzeker gedood worden; zijn bloed zal op hem zijn! 14Ziet nu, heeft hij een zoon gewonnen, die al de zonden zijn vaders, die hij doet, aanziet, en toeziet, dat hij dergelijke niet doet; 15Niet eet op de bergen, noch zijn ogen opheft tot de drekgoden van het huis Israels, de huisvrouw zijns naasten niet verontreinigt; 16En niemand verdrukt, het pand niet behoudt, en geen roof rooft, zijn brood den hongerige geeft, en den naakte met kleding bedekt; 17Zijn hand van den ellendige afhoudt, geen woeker noch overwinst neemt, Mijn rechten doet, en in Mijn inzettingen wandelt; die zal niet sterven om de ongerechtigheid zijns vaders; hij zal gewisselijk leven. 18Zijn vader, dewijl hij met onderdrukking onderdrukt heeft, des broeders goed geroofd heeft, en gedaan heeft, dat niet goed was in het midden zijner volken; ziet daar, hij zal sterven in zijn ongerechtigheid. 19Maar gijlieden zegt: Waarom draagt de zoon niet de ongerechtigheid des vaders? Immers zal de zoon, die recht en gerechtigheid gedaan heeft, en al Mijn inzettingen onderhouden, en die gedaan heeft, gewisselijk leven. 20De ziel, die zondigt, die zal sterven; de zoon zal niet dragen de ongerechtigheid des vaders, en de vader zal niet dragen de ongerechtigheid des zoons; de gerechtigheid des rechtvaardigen zal op hem zijn, en de goddeloosheid des goddelozen zal op hem zijn. 21Maar wanneer de goddeloze zich bekeert van al zijn zonden, die hij gedaan heeft, en al Mijn inzettingen onderhoudt, en doet recht en gerechtigheid, hij zal gewisselijk leven, hij zal niet sterven. 22Al zijn overtredingen, die hij gedaan heeft, zullen hem niet gedacht worden; in zijn gerechtigheid, die hij gedaan heeft, zal hij leven. 23Zou Ik enigzins lust hebben aan den dood des goddelozen, spreekt de Heere HEERE; is het niet, als hij zich bekeert van zijn wegen, dat hij leve? 24Maar als de rechtvaardige zich afkeert van zijn gerechtigheid, en onrecht doet, doende naar al de gruwelen, die de goddeloze doet, zou die leven? Al zijn gerechtigheden, die hij gedaan heeft, zullen niet gedacht worden; in zijn overtreding, waardoor hij overtreden heeft, en in zijn zonde, die hij gezondigd heeft, in die zal hij sterven. 25Nog zegt gijlieden: De weg des HEEREN is niet recht; hoort nu, o huis Israels! is Mijn weg niet recht? Zijn niet uw wegen onrecht? 26Als de rechtvaardige zich afkeert van zijn gerechtigheid, en onrecht doet, en sterft in dezelve, hij zal in zijn onrecht, dat hij gedaan heeft, sterven. 27Maar als de goddeloze zich bekeert van zijn goddeloosheid, die hij gedaan heeft, en doet recht en gerechtigheid, die zal zijn ziel in het leven behouden; 28Dewijl hij toeziet, en zich bekeert van al zijn overtredingen, die hij gedaan heeft, hij zal gewisselijk leven, hij zal niet sterven. 29Evenwel zegt het huis Israels: De weg des Heeren is niet recht. Zouden Mijn wegen, o huis Israels, niet recht zijn? Zijn niet uw wegen onrecht? 30Daarom zal Ik u richten, o huis Israels! een ieder naar zijn wegen, spreekt de Heere HEERE, keert weder, en bekeert u van al uw overtredingen, zo zal de ongerechtigheid u niet tot een aanstoot worden. 31Werpt van u weg al uw overtredingen, waardoor gij overtreden hebt, en maakt u een nieuw hart en een nieuwen geest; want waarom zoudt gij sterven, o huis Israels? 32Want Ik heb geen lust aan den dood des stervenden, spreekt de Heere HEERE; daarom bekeert u en leeft.
