1EN el tercer año de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, comenzó á reinar Ezechîas hijo de Achâz rey de Judá. 2Cuando comenzó á reinar era de veinticinco años, y reinó en Jerusalem veintinueve años. El nombre de su madre fué Abi hija de Zachârías. 3Hizo lo recto en ojos de Jehová, conforme á todas las cosas que había hecho David su padre. 4El quitó los altos, y quebró las imágenes, y taló los bosques, é hizo pedazos la serpiente de bronce que había hecho Moisés, porque hasta entonces le quemaban perfumes los hijos de Israel; y llamóle por nombre Nehustán. 5En Jehová Dios de Israel puso su esperanza: después ni antes de él no hubo otro como él en todos los reyes de Judá. 6Porque se llegó á Jehová, y no se apartó de él, sino que guardó los mandamientos que Jehová prescribió á Moisés. 7Y Jehová fué con él; y en todas las cosas á que salía prosperaba. El se rebeló contra el rey de Asiria, y no le sirvió. 8Hirió también á los Filisteos hasta Gaza y sus términos, desde las torres de las atalayas hasta la ciudad fortalecida. 9En el cuarto año del rey Ezechîas, que era el año séptimo de Oseas hijo de Ela rey de Israel, subió Salmanasar rey de los Asirios contra Samaria, y cercóla. 10Y tomáronla al cabo de tres años; esto es, en el sexto año de Ezechîas, el cual era el año nono de Oseas rey de Israel, fué Samaria tomada. 11Y el rey de Asiria traspuso á Israel á Asiria, y púsolos en Hala, y en Habor, junto al río de Gozán, y en las ciudades de los Medos: 12Por cuanto no habían atendido la voz de Jehová su Dios, antes habían quebrantado su pacto; y todas las cosas que Moisés siervo de Jehová había mandado, ni las habían escuchado, ni puesto por obra. 13Y á los catorce años del rey Ezechîas, subió Sennachêrib rey de Asiria contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y tomólas. 14Entonces Ezechîas rey de Judá envió á decir al rey de Asiria en Lachîs: Yo he pecado: vuélvete de mí, y llevaré todo lo que me impusieres. Y el rey de Asiria impuso á Ezechîas rey de Judá trescientos talentos de plata, y treinta talentos de oro. 15Dió por tanto Ezechîas toda la plata que fué hallada en la casa de Jehová, y en los tesoros de la casa real. 16Entonces descompuso Ezechîas las puertas del templo de Jehová, y los quiciales que el mismo rey Ezechîas había cubierto de oro, y diólo al rey de Asiria. 17Después el rey de Asiria envió al rey Ezechîas, desde Lachîs contra Jerusalem, á Thartán y á Rabsaris y á Rabsaces, con un grande ejército: y subieron, y vinieron á Jerusalem. Y habiendo subido, vinieron y pararon junto al conducto del estanque de arriba, que es en el camino de la heredad del batanero. 18Llamaron luego al rey, y salió á ellos Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller. 19Y díjoles Rabsaces: Decid ahora á Ezechîas: Así dice el gran rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esta en que tú estás? 20Dices, (por cierto palabras de labios): Consejo tengo y esfuerzo para la guerra. Mas ¿en qué confías, que te has rebelado contra mí? 21He aquí tú confías ahora en este bordón de caña cascada, en Egipto, en el que si alguno se apoyare, entrarále por la mano, y se le pasará. Tal es Faraón rey de Egipto, para todos los que en él confían. 22Y si me decís: Nosotros confiamos en Jehová nuestro Dios: ¿no es aquél cuyos altos y altares ha quitado Ezechîas, y ha dicho á Judá y á Jerusalem: Delante de este altar adoraréis en Jerusalem? 23Por tanto, ahora yo te ruego que des rehenes á mi señor, el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú pudieres dar jinetes para ellos. 24¿Cómo pues harás volver el rostro de un capitán el menor de los siervos de mi señor, aunque estés confiado en Egipto por sus carros y su gente de á caballo? 25Además, ¿he venido yo ahora sin Jehová á este lugar, para destruirlo? Jehová me ha dicho: Sube á esta tierra, y destrúyela. 26Entonces dijo Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, y Sebna y Joah, á Rabsaces: Ruégote que hables á tus siervos siriaco, porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no hables con nosotros judaico á oídos del pueblo que está sobre el muro. 27Y Rabsaces les dijo: ¿Hame enviado mi señor á ti y á tu señor para decir estas palabras, y no antes á los hombres que están sobre el muro, para comer su estiércol, y beber el agua de sus pies con vosotros? 28Paróse luego Rabsaces, y clamó á gran voz en judaico, y habló, diciendo: Oid la palabra del gran rey, el rey de Asiria. 29Así ha dicho el rey: No os engañe Ezechîas, porque no os podrá librar de mi mano. 30Y no os haga Ezechîas confiar en Jehová, diciendo: De cierto nos librará Jehová, y esta ciudad no será entregada en mano del rey de Asiria. 31No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced conmigo paz, y salid á mí, y cada uno comerá de su vid, y de su higuera, y cada uno beberá las aguas de su pozo; 32Hasta que yo venga, y os lleve á una tierra como la vuestra, tierra de grano y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas, tierra de olivas, de aceite, y de miel; y viviréis, y no moriréis. No oigáis á Ezechîas, porque os engaña cuando dice: Jehová nos librará. 33¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las gentes ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria? 34¿Dónde está el dios de Hamath, y de Arphad? ¿dónde el dios de Sepharvaim, de Hena, y de Hiva? ¿pudieron éstos librar á Samaria de mi mano? 35¿Qué dios de todos los dioses de las provincias ha librado á su provincia de mi mano, para que libre Jehová de mi mano á Jerusalem? 36Y el pueblo calló, que no le respondieron palabra: porque había mandamiento del rey, el cual había dicho: No le respondáis. 37Entonces Eliacim hijo de Hilcías, que era mayordomo, y Sebna el escriba, y Joah hijo de Asaph, canciller, vinieron á Ezechîas, rotos sus vestidos, y recitáronle las palabras de Rabsaces.
1Now in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. 2He was twenty-five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem: and his mother’s name was Abi the daughter of Zechariah. 3He did that which was right in the eyes of Yahweh, according to all that David his father had done. 4He removed the high places, and broke the pillars, and cut down the Asherah: and he broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for in those days the children of Israel burned incense to it; and he called it Nehushtan. 5He trusted in Yahweh, the God of Israel; so that after him was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, nor among them that were before him. 6For he joined with Yahweh; he didn’t depart from following him, but kept his commandments, which Yahweh commanded Moses. 7Yahweh was with him; wherever he went, he prospered. He rebelled against the king of Assyria, and didn’t serve him. 8He struck the Philistines to Gaza and its borders, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. 9In the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it. 10At the end of three years they took it: in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. 11The king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria, and put them in Halah, and on the Habor, the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes, 12because they didn’t obey the voice of Yahweh their God, but transgressed his covenant, even all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded, and would not hear it, nor do it. 13Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them. 14Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, “I have offended; return from me. That which you put on me, I will bear.” The king of Assyria appointed to Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in Yahweh’s house, and in the treasures of the king’s house. 16At that time, Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of Yahweh’s temple, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. 17The king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great army to Jerusalem. They went up and came to Jerusalem. When they had come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field. 18When they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebnah the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder. 19Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust? 20You say (but they are but vain words), ‘There is counsel and strength for war.’ Now on whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me? 21Now, behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt. If a man leans on it, it will go into his hand, and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust on him. 22But if you tell me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God;’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?’ 23Now therefore, please give pledges to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 24How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 25Have I now come up without Yahweh against this place to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, ‘Go up against this land, and destroy it.’”’” 26Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah, said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it. Don’t speak with us in the Jews’ language, in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” 27But Rabshakeh said to them, “Has my master sent me to your master, and to you, to speak these words? Hasn’t he sent me to the men who sit on the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own water with you?” 28Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spoke, saying, “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria. 29Thus says the king, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you out of his hand. 30Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 31Don’t listen to Hezekiah.’ For thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and everyone of you eat of his vine, and everyone of his fig tree, and everyone drink the waters of his own cistern; 32until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and of honey, that you may live, and not die. Don’t listen to Hezekiah, when he persuades you, saying, “Yahweh will deliver us.” 33Has any of the gods of the nations ever delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 34Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 35Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” 36But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.” 37Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, came with Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
1Het geschiedde nu in het derde jaar van Hosea, den zoon van Ela, den koning van Israel, dat Hizkia koning werd, de zoon van Achaz, koning van Juda. 2Vijf en twintig jaren was hij oud, toen hij koning werd, en hij regeerde negen en twintig jaren te Jeruzalem, en de naam zijner moeder was Abi, een dochter van Zacharia. 3En hij deed dat recht was in de ogen des HEEREN, naar alles, wat zijn vader David gedaan had. 4Hij nam de hoogten weg, en brak de opgerichte beelden, en roeide de bossen uit; en hij verbrijzelde de koperen slang, die Mozes gemaakt had, omdat de kinderen Israels tot die dagen toe haar gerookt hadden; en hij noemde haar Nehustan. 5Hij betrouwde op den HEERE, den God Israels, zodat na hem zijns gelijke niet was onder alle koningen van Juda, noch die voor hem geweest waren. 6Want hij kleefde den HEERE aan; hij week niet van Hem na te volgen, en hij hield Zijn geboden, die de HEERE aan Mozes geboden had. 7Zo was de HEERE met hem; overal, waar hij henen uittrok, handelde hij kloekelijk; daartoe viel hij af van den koning van Assyrie, dat hij hem niet diende. 8Hij sloeg de Filistijnen tot Gaza toe, en haar landpalen, van den wachttoren af tot de vaste steden toe. 9Het geschiedde nu in het vierde jaar van den koning Hizkia (hetwelk was het zevende jaar van Hosea, den zoon van Ela, den koning van Israel) dat Salmaneser, de koning van Assyrie, opkwam tegen Samaria, en haar belegerde. 10En zij namen haar in ten einde van drie jaren, in het zesde jaar van Hizkia; het was het negende jaar van Hosea, den koning van Israel, als Samaria ingenomen werd. 11En de koning van Assyrie voerde Israel weg naar Assyrie, en deed hen leiden in Halah, en in Habor, bij de rivier Gozan, en in de steden der Meden. 12Daarom dat zij de stem des HEEREN, huns Gods, niet waren gehoorzaam geweest, maar Zijn verbond overtreden hadden; en al wat Mozes, de knecht des HEEREN, geboden had, dat hadden zij niet gehoord, noch gedaan. 13Maar in het veertiende jaar van den koning Hizkia kwam Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, op tegen alle vaste steden van Juda, en nam ze in. 14Toen zond Hizkia, de koning van Juda, tot den koning van Assyrie, naar Lachis, zeggende: Ik heb gezondigd, keer af van mij, wat gij mij opleggen zult, zal ik dragen. Toen legde de koning van Assyrie Hizkia, den koning van Juda, driehonderd talenten zilvers, en dertig talenten gouds op. 15Alzo gaf Hizkia al het zilver, dat gevonden werd in het huis des HEEREN, en in de schatten van het huis des konings. 16Te dier tijd sneed Hizkia het goud af van de deuren van den tempel des HEEREN, en van de posten, die Hizkia, de koning van Juda, had laten overtrekken, en gaf dat aan de koning van Assyrie. 17Evenwel zond de koning van Assyrie Tartan, en Rabsaris, en Rabsake, van Lachis tot den koning Hizkia, met een zwaar heir naar Jeruzalem; en zij togen op, en kwamen naar Jeruzalem. En als zij optogen en gekomen waren, bleven zij staan bij den watergang des oppersten vijvers, welke is bij den hogen weg van het veld des vollers. 18En zij riepen tot den koning; zo ging tot hen uit Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier. 19En Rabsake zeide tot hen: Zegt nu tot Hizkia: Zo zegt de grote koning, de koning van Assyrie: Wat vertrouwen is dit, waarmede gij vertrouwt? 20Gij zegt (doch het is een woord der lippen): Er is raad en macht tot den oorlog; op wien vertrouwt gij nu, dat gij tegen mij rebelleert? 21Zie nu, vertrouwt gij u op dien gebroken rietstaf, op Egypte, op denwelken zo iemand leunt, zo zal hij in zijn hand gaan, en die doorboren; alzo is Farao, de koning van Egypte, al dengenen, die op hem vertrouwen. 22Maar zo gij tot mij zegt: Wij vertrouwen op den HEERE, onzen God; is Hij die niet, Wiens hoogten en Wiens altaren Hizkia weggenomen heeft, en tot Juda en tot Jeruzalem gezegd heeft: Voor dit altaar zult gij u buigen te Jeruzalem? 23Nu dan, wed toch met mijn heer, den koning van Assyrie; en ik zal u twee duizend paarden geven, zo gij voor u de ruiters daarop zult kunnen geven. 24Hoe zoudt gij dan het aangezicht van een enigen vorst van de geringste knechten mijns heren afkeren? Maar gij vertrouwt op Egypte, om de wagenen en om de ruiteren. 25Nu, ben ik zonder den HEERE opgetogen tegen deze plaats, om die te verderven? De HEERE heeft tot mij gezegd: Trek op tegen dat land, en verderf het. 26Toen zeide Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, en Sebna, en Joah tot Rabsake: Spreek toch tot uw knechten in het Syrisch, want wij verstaan het wel; en spreek met ons niet in het Joods, voor de oren des volks, dat op den muur is. 27Maar Rabsake zeide tot hen: Heeft mijn heer mij tot uw heer en tot u gezonden, om deze woorden te spreken? Is het niet tot de mannen, die op den muur zitten, dat zij met ulieden hun drek eten, en hun water drinken zullen? 28Alzo stond Rabsake, en riep met luider stem in het Joods; en hij sprak en zeide: Hoort het woord des groten konings, des konings van Assyrie! 29Zo zegt de koning: Dat Hizkia u niet bedriege: want hij zal u niet kunnen redden uit zijn hand. 30Daartoe dat Hizkia u niet doe vertrouwen op den HEERE, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons zekerlijk redden, en deze stad zal niet in de hand van den koning van Assyrie gegeven worden. 31Hoort naar Hizkia niet; want zo zegt de koning van Assyrie: Handelt met mij door een geschenk, en komt tot mij uit, en eet, een ieder van zijn wijnstok, en een ieder van zijn vijgeboom; en drinkt een ieder het water zijns bornputs; 32Totdat ik kom, en u haal in een land, als ulieder land, een land van koren en van most, een land van brood en van wijngaarden, een land van olijven, van olie en van honig; zo zult gij leven en niet sterven; en hoort niet naar Hizkia, want hij hitst u op, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons redden. 33Hebben de goden der volken, ieder zijn land, enigszins gered uit de hand van den koning van Assyrie? 34Waar zijn de goden van Hamath, en van Arpad? Waar zijn de goden van Sefarvaim, Hena en Ivva? Ja, hebben zij Samaria uit mijn hand gered? 35Welke zijn ze onder alle goden der landen, die hun land uit mijn hand gered hebben, dat de HEERE Jeruzalem uit mijn hand redden zou? 36Doch het volk zweeg stil en antwoordde hem niet een woord; want het gebod des konings was, zeggende: Gij zult hem niet antwoorden. 37Toen kwam Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier, tot Hizkia, met gescheurde klederen; en zij gaven hem de woorden van Rabsake te kennen.
