1Nghe tin đó, vua Ê-xê-chia liền xé áo mình, quấn bao gai, vào đền Ðức Giê-hô-va. 2Ðoạn, sai quan cung giám Ê-li-a-kim, thơ ký Sép-na, và các trưởng lão trong hàng thầy tế lễ, đều quấn bao gai, đến cùng đấng tiên tri Ê-sai, con trai của A-mốt, 3nói với người rằng: Vua Ê-xê-chia phán như vầy: Ngày nay là ngày hoạn nạn, quở phạt, và hổ nhuốc; vì con đã đến kỳ đẻ rồi, nhưng không có sức mà đẻ ra. 4Có lẽ Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi sẽ nghe những lời của Ráp-sa-kê mà chủ nó là vua A-si-ri đã sai đến để đố thách Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống; và có lẽ Ngài sẽ quở phạt nó theo như những lời mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi đã nghe: vậy xin hãy vì những người còn lại đây mà cầu nguyện! 5Các tôi tớ của vua Ê-xê-chia bèn đến cùng Ê-sai. 6Ê-sai bảo rằng: Nầy là lời các ngươi sẽ tâu lại cùng chủ mình: Ðức Giê-hô-va có phán như vầy: Chớ sợ về những lời ngươi đã nghe, là lời của tôi tớ vua A-si-ri dùng mà nói phạm ta. 7Nầy ta đặt thần linh trong nó, rồi nó sẽ nghe tin mà trở về xứ mình; tại đó, ta sẽ làm cho nó ngã dưới gươm. 8Vả, khi Ráp-sa-kê nghe chủ mình là vua A-si-ri đã đi khỏi La-ki, bèn trở về chầu người, gặp người đương đánh thành Líp-na. 9Bấy giờ vua A-si-ri có nghe tin báo về Tiệt-ha-ca là vua Ê-thi-ô-bi rằng: Người kéo ra để đánh cùng vua; bèn sai các sứ giả đến cùng Ê-xê-chia, và dặn rằng: 10Các ngươi hãy nói cùng Ê-xê-chia, vua Giu-đa, rằng: Vua chớ để cho mình bị lừa bởi Ðức Chúa Trời mà mình tin cậy, nói rằng: Giê-ru-sa-lem sẽ chẳng phó vào tay vua A-si-ri đâu. 11Nầy, vua hẳn có nghe những sẽ các vua A-si-ri đã làm ra ở các nước. Các nước ấy đã bị hủy diệt cả rồi; còn vua, vua sẽ được cứu khỏi ư! 12Các thần của các nước mà tổ tiên chúng ta đã diệt, tức là các thần của Gô-xan, của Cha-ran, của Rết-sép và của con cái Ê-đen ở Tê-la-sa, có cứu được họ không? 13Chớ nào vua của Ha-mát, vua của Aït-bát, các vua của thành Sê-phạt va-im, thành Hê-ma và thành Y-va ở đâu? 14Ê-xê-chia đã nhận thơ tại tay sứ giả và đọc rồi, thì lên nhà Ðức Giê-hô-va, mở thơ ra trước mặt Ðức Giê-hô-va, 15cầu nguyện Ðức Giê-hô-va rằng: 16Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, là Ðấng ngự trên các chê-ru-bin, chỉ một mình Ngài là Ðức Chúa Trời của mọi nước trên đất, Ngài đã dựng nên trời và đất. 17Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va, xin nghiêng tai mà nghe! Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va, xin mở mắt mà xem! Xin nghe mọi lời mà San-chê-ríp đã khiến nói cùng tôi để đố thách Ðức Chúa Trời hằng sống! 18Hỡi Ðức Giê-hô-va, thật rằng các vua nước A-si-ri đã hủy diệt các nước và phá hại đất đai, 19ném các thần trong lửa. Nhưng ấy chẳng phải là các thần, bèn là việc của tay người ta, bằng gỗ và bằng đá, cho nên họ đã hủy diệt đi được. 20Hỡi Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi, vậy, bây giờ, xin Ngài cứu chúng tôi khỏi tay San-chê-ríp, hầu cho mọi nước trên đất đều biết chỉ một mình Ngài là Ðức Giê-hô-va! 21Ê-sai, con trai của A-mốt, bèn khiến người tâu cùng vua Ê-xê-chia rằng: Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên phán như vầy: Vì ngươi đã cầu xin ta nghịch cùng San-chê-ríp, vua A-si-ri; 22nầy là lời Ðức Giê-hô-va đã phán về nó: Gái đồng trinh Si-ôn khinh dể ngươi, nhạo cười ngươi; gái Giê-ru-sa-lem lắc đầu sau ngươi! 23Ngươi đã đố thách và nói phạm đến ai? Ngươi đã cất tiếng lên và ngước mắt lên cao nghịch cùng ai? Ấy là nghịch cùng Ðấng Thánh của Y-sơ-ra-ên. 24Ngươi đã dùng các tôi tớ mình mà đố thách Chúa, nói rằng: Ta đem muôn vàn cỗ xe lên trên chót núi, là nơi xa thẳm của Li-ban; ta sẽ đốn những cây bách rất cao, cây tùng rất xinh; vào đến trên đỉnh rất cao, trong rừng của ruộng tốt. 25Ta đã đào đất và uống nước; dùng bàn chơn làm cho cạn mọi sông Ê-díp-tô. 26Ngươi há chẳng nghe rằng ta đã làm sự đó từ lâu, đã định từ đời xưa hay sao? Hiện nay ta khiến xảy ra, hầu cho ngươi phá các thành bền vững nên gò đống đổ nát. 27Những dân cư các thành ấy đã kém sức, khiếp sợ, xấu hổ, trở nên như rau ngoài đồng và cỏ xanh, như cỏ trên mái nhà, như lúa mì chưa trồi đọt mà đã héo. 28Ta xem thấy ngươi khi ngồi, khi ra, khi vào và khi náo loạn nghịch cùng ta. 29Vì ngươi náo loạn nghịch cùng ta, lời xấc xược của ngươi đã thấu đến tai ta, nên ta tra cái khoen nơi lỗ mũi ngươi, và cái khớp nơi miệng ngươi, khiến ngươi theo con đường mình đã noi đến mà trở về. 30Hỡi Ê-xê-chia, điều nầy sẽ là dấu: năm nay sẽ ăn hoa lợi chính ruộng tự sanh ra, sang năm còn ăn lúa tự nhiên mọc lên không gieo giống. Nhưng, đến năm thứ ba, hãy gieo và gặt, hãy trồng vườn nho và ăn trái. 31Trong nhà Giu-đa kẻ nào tránh khỏi nạn và còn sót lại sẽ châm rễ mới ở dưới và ra trái ở trên. 32Vì sẽ có dân sót ra từ Giê-ru-sa-lem, và mấy kẻ trốn khỏi nạn ra từ núi Si-ôn: lòng sốt sắng của Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân sẽ làm điều đó. 33Vậy nên, Ðức Giê-hô-va phán về vua A-si-ri như vầy: Nó sẽ không vào thành nầy, chẳng bắn vào một mũi trên, cũng chẳng dùng một cái thuẫn mà nghịch với, và chẳng đắp lũy mà cự lại. 34Nó sẽ theo con đường mình đã noi đến mà trở về, không vào thành nầy đâu, Ðức Giê-hô-va phán vậy. 35Ta sẽ binh vực thành nầy, để giải cứu nó, vì cớ ta và vì cớ Ða-vít là tôi tớ ta. 36Bấy giờ, một thiên sứ của Ðức Giê-hô-va vào trại quân của người A-si-ri, và giết mười tám vạn năm ngàn người. Sáng hôm sau, người ta dậy sớm, thấy rặt những thây chết. 37San-chê-ríp, vua A-si-ri, bèn đi, trở về ở tại Ni-ni-ve. 38Một ngày kia người đương quì lạy trong đền Nít-róc, thần của mình, thì con trai người là A-tra-mê-léc và Sa-rết-se lấy gươm giết người. Ðoạn, hai người đó trốn trong xứ A-ra-rát. Con trai người là Ê-sạt-ha-đôn trị vì thay người.
1When king Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes, covered himself with sackcloth, and went into Yahweh’s house. 2He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz. 3They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, ‘This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to give birth. 4It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’” 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. 6Isaiah said to them, “Tell your master, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Don’t be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will put a spirit in him and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.”’” 8So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9He heard news concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, “He has come out to fight against you.” When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10“Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, “Jerusalem won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 11Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Shall you be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’” 14Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to Yahweh’s house, and spread it before Yahweh. 15Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying, 16“Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, who is enthroned among the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 17Turn your ear, Yahweh, and hear. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and behold. Hear all of the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God. 18Truly, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have destroyed all the countries and their land, 19and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them. 20Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.” 21Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, 22this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you. 23Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel. 24By your servants, have you defied the Lord, and have said, “With the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon. I will cut down its tall cedars and its choice fir trees. I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field. 25I have dug and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet I will dry up all the rivers of Egypt.” 26Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it in ancient times? Now I have brought it to pass, that it should be yours to destroy fortified cities, turning them into ruinous heaps. 27Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like a field before its crop has grown. 28But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me. 29Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came. 30This shall be the sign to you. You will eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs from the same; and in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit. 31The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah will again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. 32For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and survivors will escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.’ 33Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither will he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it. 34By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come to this city,’ says Yahweh. 35‘For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.’” 36Yahweh’s angel went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 37So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, went away, returned to Nineveh, and stayed there. 38As he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.

Gij Zelf, Gij alleen zijt de God van alle koninkrijken der aarde; Gij hebt den hemel en de aarde gemaakt! 17O HEERE! neig Uw oor en hoor, HEERE! doe Uw ogen open, en zie; en hoor al de woorden van Sanherib, die gezonden heeft om den levenden God te honen. 18Waarlijk, HEERE! hebben de koningen van Assyrie al de landen, mitsgaders derzelver landerijen verwoest; 19En hebben hun goden in het vuur geworpen; want zij waren geen goden, maar het werk van mensenhanden, hout en steen; daarom hebben zij die verdorven. 20Nu dan, HEERE, onze God, verlos ons uit zijn hand, zo zullen alle koninkrijken der aarde weten, dat Gij alleen de HEERE zijt. 21Toen zond Jesaja, de zoon van Amoz, tot Hizkia, om te zeggen: Alzo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Dat gij tot Mij gebeden hebt tegen Sanherib, den koning van Assyrie, heb Ik gehoord. 22Dit is het woord, dat de HEERE over hem gesproken heeft: De jonkvrouw, de dochter van Sion, veracht u, zij bespot u, de dochter van Jeruzalem schudt het hoofd achter u. 23Wien hebt gij gehoond, en gij gelasterd, en tegen Wien hebt gij de stem verheven, en uw ogen omhoog opgeheven? Tegen den Heilige Israels! 24Door middel uwer dienstknechten hebt gij den HEERE gehoond, en gezegd: Ik heb met de menigte mijner wagenen beklommen de hoogte der bergen, de zijden van Libanon; en ik zal zijn hoge cederbomen en zijn uitgelezen dennebomen afhouwen; en zal komen tot zijn uiterste hoogte, in het woud zijns schonen velds. 25Ik heb gegraven en de wateren gedronken; en ik heb met mijn voetzolen alle rivieren der belegerde plaatsen verdroogd. 26Hebt gij niet gehoord, dat Ik zulks lang te voren gedaan heb, en dat van de oude dagen af geformeerd heb? Nu heb Ik dat doen komen, dat gij zoudt zijn, om de vaste steden te verstoren tot woeste hopen. 27Daarom waren haar inwoners handeloos, zij waren verslagen en beschaamd; zij waren als het gras des velds en de groene grasscheutjes, als het hooi der daken, en het brandkoren, eer het overeind staat. 28Maar Ik weet uw zitten, en uw uitgaan, en uw inkomen, en uw woeden tegen Mij. 29Om uw woeden tegen Mij, en dat uw woeling voor Mijn oren opgekomen is, zo zal Ik Mijn haak in uw neus leggen, en Mijn gebit in uw lippen, en Ik zal u doen wederkeren door dien weg, door denwelken gij gekomen zijt. 30En dat zij u een teken, dat men in dit jaar, wat van zelf gewassen is, eten zal, en in het tweede jaar, wat daarvan weder uitspruit; maar zaait in het derde jaar, en maait, en plant wijngaarden, en eet hun vruchten. 31Want het ontkomene, dat overgebleven is van het huis van Juda, zal wederom nederwaarts wortelen, en het zal opwaarts vrucht dragen. 32Want van Jeruzalem zal het overblijfsel uitgaan, en het ontkomene van den berg Sion; de ijver des HEEREN der heirscharen zal dit doen. 33Daarom, zo zegt de HEERE van den koning van Assyrie: Hij zal in deze stad niet komen, noch daar een pijl inschieten; ook zal hij met geen schild daarvoor komen, en zal geen wal daartegen opwerpen. 34Door den weg, dien hij gekomen is, door dien zal hij wederkeren; maar in deze stad zal hij niet komen, zegt de HEERE. 35Want Ik zal deze stad beschermen, om die te verlossen, om Mijnentwil, en om Davids, Mijns knechts wil. 36Toen voer de engel des HEEREN uit, en sloeg in het leger van Assyrie honderd vijf en tachtig duizend. En toen zij zich des morgens vroeg opmaakten, ziet, die allen waren dode lichamen. 37Zo vertrok Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, en toog henen, en keerde weder; en hij bleef te Nineve. 38Het geschiedde nu, als hij in het huis van Nisroch, zijn god, zich nederboog, dat Adramelech en Sarezer, zijn zonen, hem met het zwaard versloegen; doch zij ontkwamen in het land van Ararat; en Esar-Haddon, zijn zoon, werd koning in zijn plaats.
