1Năm thứ mười bốn đời vua Ê-xê-chia, thì San-chê-ríp, vua A-si-ri, đến đánh các thành bền vững của Giu-đa và chiếm lấy. 2Ðoạn, vua A-si-ri sai Ráp-sa-kê với đạo binh lớn từ La-ki đến Giê-ru-sa-lem, nghịch cùng vua Ê-xê-chia; Ráp-sa-kê đứng tại cống ao trên, nơi đường cái ruộng thợ nện. 3Bấy giờ, Ê-li-a-kim, con trai của Hinh-kia, làm chức cung giám, đi với thơ ký Sép-na, và sử quan Giô-a, con trai của A-sáp, mà đến cùng người. 4Ráp-sa-kê nói với ba người rằng: Hãy tâu cùng vua Ê-xê-chia rằng: Ðấng đại vương, tức là vua A-si-ri, phán như vầy: Sự trông cậy mà ngươi nương dựa là gì? 5Ta nói rằng: mưu và sức ngươi dùng mà giao chiến chỉ là lời vô ích mà thôi! Vậy ngươi cậy ai mà dám làm phản ta? 6Nầy, ngươi cậy Ê-díp-tô, ngươi lấy cây sậy đã gãy ấy làm gậy, là cây mà ai dựa vào thì nó đâm phủng tay. Pha-ra-ôn, vua Ê-díp-tô, đối với kẻ trông cậy mình cũng là thể ấy. 7Có lẽ các ngươi bảo ta rằng: Chúng ta cậy Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta; nhưng ấy chẳng phải là Ðấng mà Ê-xê-chia đã bỏ các nơi cao và các bàn thờ Ngài, khi truyền cho Giu-đa và Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng: Các ngươi khá thờ lạy trước bàn thờ nầy hay sao? 8Vậy bây giờ, hãy đưa con tin cho chủ ta, là vua A-si-ri. Nếu ngươi tìm được đủ lính kỵ, thì ta sẽ cấp cho hai ngàn con ngựa. 9Nhưng tài nào ngươi sẽ đuổi được lấy một quan tướng rất kém trong các tôi tớ chủ ta hay sao? Song đừng lấy tiếng Giu-đa nói cùng chúng tôi, cho dân nầy đương ở trên tường thành nó nghe. 12Ráp-sa-kê nói: Chủ ta sai ta truyền mấy lời đó, nào những cho chủ ngươi và cho ngươi ư? Há chẳng cũng truyền cho những người ngồi trên tường thành, là kẻ sắp phải cùng với các ngươi ăn phân uống tiểu mình ư? 13Ðoạn, Ráp-sa-kê đứng dậy, dùng tiếng Giu-đa mà nói to lên rằng: Hãy nghe lời phán của đại vương, là vua A-si-ri. 14Vua phán như vầy: Các ngươi chớ để vua Ê-xê-chia lừa dối mình; vì người chẳng có thể cứu các ngươi. 15Cũng chớ để vua Ê-xê-chia khuyên các ngươi trông cậy Ðức Giê-hô-va mà rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va chắc sẽ cứu chúng ta, và thành nầy sẽ chẳng phó vào thay vua A-si-ri đâu! 16Chớ nghe vua Ê-xê-chia; vì vua A-si-ri phán như vầy: Hãy hòa với ta, và ra hàng đi, thì các ngươi ai nấy sẽ được ăn trái nho trái vả của mình, uống nước giếng mình, 17cho tới chừng ta đến, đặng đem các ngươi vào một xứ như xứ các ngươi, tức là xứ có mạch nha và rượu mới, lúa mì và nho. 18Vậy, hãy giữ mình kẻo vua Ê-xê-chia dỗ dành các ngươi mà rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va sẽ giải cứu chúng ta! Vậy chớ các thần của các nước khác đã giải cứu xứ họ khỏi tay vua A-si-ri được chăng? 19Nào các thần của Ha-mát và của Aït-bát đâu tá? Nào các thầy của Sê-phạt-va-im đâu tá? Các thần ấy đã cứu Sa-ma-ri ra khỏi tay ta chưa? 20Trong những thầy của các xứ đó, có thầy nào là thầy đã cứu xứ mình ra khỏi tay ta? Mà Ðức Giê-hô-va có thể cứu Giê-ru-sa-lem khỏi tay ta được! 21Chúng làm thinh, chẳng đáp lại một lời, vì vua có truyền lịnh rằng: Các ngươi đừng đáp lại. 22Ê-li-a-kim, con trai của Hinh-kia, làm chức cung giám, cùng thơ ký Sép-na, sử quan Giô-a, con trai của A-sáp, xé áo mình ra, trở về chầu vua Ê-xê-chia, và thuật lại những lời của Ráp-sa-kê.
1Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them. 2The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool in the fuller’s field highway. 3Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him. 4Rabshakeh said to them, “Now tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What confidence is this in which you trust? 5I say that your counsel and strength for the war are only vain words. Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me? 6Behold, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 7But if you tell me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God,’ isn’t that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar?’” 8Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them. 9How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10Have I come up now without Yahweh against this land to destroy it? Yahweh said to me, “Go up against this land, and destroy it.”’” 11Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and don’t speak to us in the Jews’ language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” 12But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?” 13Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria! 14Thus says the king, ‘Don’t let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you. 15Don’t let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us. This city won’t be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”’ 16Don’t listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern; 17until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, “Yahweh will deliver us.” Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand? 20Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that Yahweh should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?’” 21But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king’s commandment was, “Don’t answer him.” 22Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
1En het geschiedde in het veertiende jaar van den koning Hizkia, dat Sanherib, de koning van Assyrie, optoog tegen alle vaste steden van Juda, en nam ze in. 2En de koning van Assyrie zond Rabsake van Lachis naar Jeruzalem tot den koning Hizkia, met een zwaar heir; en hij stond aan den watergang des oppersten vijvers, aan den hogen weg van het veld des vollers. 3Toen ging tot hem uit Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier. 4En Rabsake zeide tot hen: Zegt nu tot Hizkia: Zo zegt de grote koning, de koning van Assyrie: Wat vertrouwen is dit, waarmede gij vertrouwt; 5Ik mocht zeggen (doch het is een woord der lippen): Er is raad en macht tot den oorlog; op wien vertrouwt gij nu, dat gij tegen mij rebelleert? 6Zie, gij vertrouwt op dien gebrokenen rietstaf, op Egypte; op denwelken zo iemand leunt, zo zal hij in zijn hand gaan en die doorboren; alzo is Farao, de koning van Egypte, al dengenen, die op hem vertrouwen. 7Maar zo gij tot mij zegt: Wij vertrouwen op den HEERE, onzen God; is Hij Die niet, Wiens hoogten en Wiens altaren Hizkia weggenomen heeft, en Die tot Juda en tot Jeruzalem gezegd heeft: Voor dit altaar zult gij u nederbuigen? 8Nu dan, wed toch met mijn heer, den koning van Assyrie; en ik zal u twee duizend paarden geven, zo gij voor u de ruiters daarop zult kunnen geven. 9Hoe zoudt gij dan het aangezicht van een enigen vorst, van de geringste knechten mijns heren, afkeren? Maar gij vertrouwt op Egypte, om de wagenen en om de ruiteren. 10En nu ben ik zonder den HEERE opgetogen tegen dit land, om dat te verderven. De HEERE heeft tot mij gezegd: Trek op tegen dat land, en verderf het. 11Toen zeide Eljakim, en Sebna, en Joah tot Rabsake: Spreek toch tot uw knechten in het Syrisch, want wij verstaan het wel; en spreek niet met ons in het Joods, voor de oren des volks, dat op den muur is. 12Maar Rabsake zeide: Heeft mijn heer mij tot uw heer en tot u gezonden, om deze woorden te spreken? Is het niet tot de mannen, die op den muur zitten, dat zij met ulieden hun drek eten, en hun water drinken zullen? 13Alzo stond Rabsake, en riep met luider stem in het Joods, en zeide: Hoort de woorden des groten konings, des konings van Assyrie! 14Alzo zegt de koning: Dat Hizkia u niet bedriege, want hij zal u niet kunnen redden. 15Daartoe, dat Hizkia u niet doe vertrouwen op den HEERE, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons zekerlijk redden; deze stad zal niet in de hand des konings van Assyrie gegeven worden. 16Hoort naar Hizkia niet; want alzo zegt de koning van Assyrie: Handelt met mij door een geschenk, en komt tot mij uit, en eet, een ieder van zijn wijnstok, en een ieder van zijn vijgeboom, en drinkt een ieder het water zijns bornputs; 17Totdat ik kom en u haal in een land, als ulieder land is, een land van koren en van most, een land van brood en van wijngaarden. 18Dat Hizkia ulieden niet verleide, zeggende: De HEERE zal ons redden; hebben de goden der volken, een ieder zijn land, gered uit de hand des konings van Assyrie? 19Waar zijn de goden van Hamath en Arpad? Waar zijn de goden van Sefarvaim? Hebben zij ook Samaria van mijn hand gered? 20Welke zijn ze onder al de goden dezer landen, die hun land uit mijn hand gered hebben, dat de HEERE Jeruzalem uit mijn hand zou redden? 21Doch zij zwegen stil, en antwoordden hem niet een woord; want het gebod des konings was, zeggende: Gij zult hem niet antwoorden. 22Toen kwam Eljakim, de zoon van Hilkia, de hofmeester, en Sebna, de schrijver, en Joah, de zoon van Asaf, de kanselier, tot Hizkia met gescheurde klederen; en zij gaven hem de woorden van Rabsake te kennen.
