1Or nell’anno decimoquinto dell’impero di Tiberio Cesare, essendo Ponzio Pilato governatore della Giudea, ed Erode tetrarca della Galilea, e Filippo, suo fratello, tetrarca dell’Iturea e della Traconitide, e Lisania tetrarca dell’Abilene, 2sotto i sommi sacerdoti Anna e Caiàfa, la parola di Dio fu diretta a Giovanni, figliuol di Zaccaria, nel deserto. 3Ed egli andò per tutta la contrada d’intorno al Giordano, predicando un battesimo di ravvedimento per la remissione de’ peccati, 4secondo che è scritto nel libro delle parole del profeta Isaia: V’è una voce d’uno che grida nel deserto: Preparate la via del Signore, addirizzate i suoi sentieri. 5Ogni valle sarà colmata ed ogni monte ed ogni colle sarà abbassato; le vie tortuose saran fatte diritte e le scabre saranno appianate; 6ed ogni carne vedrà la salvezza di Dio. 7Giovanni dunque diceva alle turbe che uscivano per esser battezzate da lui: Razza di vipere, chi v’ha mostrato a fuggir dall’ira a venire? 8Fate dunque dei frutti degni del ravvedimento, e non vi mettete a dire in voi stessi: Noi abbiamo Abramo per padre! Perché vi dico che Iddio può da queste pietre far sorgere dei figliuoli ad Abramo. 9E ormai è anche posta la scure alla radice degli alberi; ogni albero dunque che non fa buon frutto, vien tagliato e gittato nel fuoco. 10E le turbe lo interrogavano, dicendo: E allora, che dobbiam fare? 11Ed egli rispondeva loro: Chi ha due tuniche, ne faccia parte a chi non ne ha; e chi ha da mangiare, faccia altrettanto. 12Or vennero anche dei pubblicani per esser battezzati, e gli dissero: Maestro, che dobbiam fare? 13Ed egli rispose loro: Non riscotete nulla di più di quello che v’è ordinato. 14Lo interrogaron pure de’ soldati, dicendo: E noi, che dobbiam fare? Ed egli a loro: Non fate estorsioni, né opprimete alcuno con false denunzie e contentatevi della vostra paga. 15Or stando il popolo in aspettazione e domandandosi tutti in cuor loro riguardo a Giovanni se talora non fosse lui il Cristo, 16Giovanni rispose, dicendo a tutti: Ben vi battezzo io con acqua; ma vien colui che è più forte di me, al quale io non son degno di sciogliere il legaccio dei calzari. 1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. 4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight. 5Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth. 6All flesh will see God’s salvation.’” 7He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones! 9Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.” 10The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?” 11He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” 12Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?” 13He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.” 14Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.” 15As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, 16John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, 17whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 18Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people, 19but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, 20added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison. 21Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying. The sky was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form as a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. 1En in het vijftiende jaar der regering van den keizer Tiberius, als Pontius Pilatus stadhouder was over Judea, en Herodes een viervorst over Galilea, en Filippus, zijn broeder, een viervorst over Iturea en over het land Trachonitis, en Lysanias een viervorst over Abilene; 2Onder de hogepriesters Annas en Kajafas, geschiedde het woord Gods tot Johannes, den zoon van Zacharias, in de woestijn. 3En hij kwam in al het omliggende land der Jordaan, predikende den doop der bekering tot vergeving der zonden. 4Gelijk geschreven is in het boek der woorden van Jesaja, den profeet, zeggende: De stem des roependen in de woestijn: Bereidt den weg des Heeren, maakt Zijn paden recht! 5Alle dal zal gevuld worden, en alle berg en heuvel zal vernederd worden, en de kromme wegen zullen tot een rechten weg worden, en de oneffen tot effen wegen. 6En alle vlees zal de zaligheid Gods zien. 7Hij zeide dan tot de scharen, die uitkwamen, om van hem gedoopt te worden: Gij adderengebroedsels, wie heeft u aangewezen te vlieden van den toekomenden toorn? 8Brengt dan vruchten voort der bekering waardig; en begint niet te zeggen bij uzelven: Wij hebben Abraham tot een vader; want ik zeg u, dat God zelfs uit deze stenen Abraham kinderen kan verwekken. 9En de bijl ligt ook alrede aan den wortel der bomen; alle boom dan, die geen goede vrucht voortbrengt, wordt uitgehouwen, en in het vuur geworpen. 10En de scharen vraagden hem, zeggende: Wat zullen wij dan doen? 11En hij, antwoordende, zeide tot hen: Die twee rokken heeft, dele hem mede, die geen heeft; en die spijze heeft, doe desgelijks. 12En er kwamen ook tollenaars om gedoopt te worden, en zeiden tot hem: Meester! wat zullen wij doen? 13En hij zeide tot hen: Eist niet meer, dan hetgeen u gezet is. 14En hem vraagden ook de krijgslieden, zeggende: En wij, wat zullen wij doen?
