1Or dopo queste cose, Absalom si procurò un cocchio, de’ cavalli, e cinquanta uomini che correvano dinanzi a lui. 2Absalom si levava la mattina presto, e si metteva da un lato della via che menava alle porte della città; e quando qualcuno, avendo un processo, si recava dal re per chieder giustizia, Absalom lo chiamava, e gli diceva: "Di qual città sei tu?" L’altro gli rispondeva: "Il tuo servo è di tale e tale tribù d’Israele". 3Allora Absalom gli diceva: "Vedi, la tua causa e buona e giusta, ma non v’è chi sia delegato dal re per sentirti". 4E Absalom aggiungeva: "Oh se facessero me giudice del paese! Chiunque avesse un processo o un affare verrebbe da me, e io gli farei giustizia". 5E quando uno gli s’accostava per prostrarglisi dinanzi, ei gli porgeva la mano, l’abbracciava e lo baciava. 6Absalom faceva così con tutti quelli d’Israele che venivano dal re per chieder giustizia; e in questo modo Absalom rubò il cuore alla gente d’Israele. 7Or avvenne che, in capo a quattro anni Absalom disse al re: "Ti prego, lasciami andare ad Hebron a sciogliere un voto che feci all’Eterno. 8Poiché, durante la sua dimora a Gheshur, in Siria, il tuo servo fece un voto, dicendo: Se l’Eterno mi riconduce a Gerusalemme, io servirò l’Eterno!" 9Il re gli disse: "Va’ in pace!" Ed Ittai, il Ghitteo, passò oltre con tutta la sua gente e con tutti i fanciulli che eran con lui. 23E tutti quelli del paese piangevano ad alta voce, mentre tutto il popolo passava. Il re passò il torrente Kidron, e tutto il popolo passò, prendendo la via del deserto. 24Ed ecco venire anche Tsadok con tutti i Leviti, i quali portavano l’arca del patto di Dio. E mentre Abiathar saliva, essi posarono l’arca di Dio, finché tutto il popolo non ebbe finito di uscir dalla città. 25E il re disse a Tsadok: "Riporta in città l’arca di Dio! Se io trovo grazia agli occhi dell’Eterno, egli mi farà tornare, e mi farà vedere l’arca e la dimora di lui; 26ma se dice: Io non ti gradisco eccomi; faccia egli di me quello che gli parrà". 27Il re disse ancora al sacerdote Tsadok: "Capisci? Torna in pace in città con i due vostri figliuoli: Ahimaats, tuo figliuolo, e Gionathan, figliuolo di Abiathar. 28Guardate, io aspetterò nelle pianure del deserto, finché mi sia recata qualche notizia da parte vostra". 29Così Tsadok ed Abiathar riportarono a Gerusalemme l’arca di Dio, e dimorarono quivi. 30E Davide saliva il monte degli Ulivi; saliva piangendo, e camminava col capo coperto e a piedi scalzi; e tutta la gente ch’era con lui aveva il capo coperto, e, salendo, piangeva. 31Qualcuno venne a dire a Davide: "Ahitofel è con Absalom tra i congiurati". E Davide disse: "Deh, o Eterno, rendi vani i consigli di Ahitofel!" 32E come Davide fu giunto in vetta al monte, al luogo dove si adora Dio, ecco farglisi incontro Hushai, l’Arkita, con la tunica stracciata ed il capo coperto di polvere. 33Davide gli disse: "Se tu passi oltre con me mi sarai di peso; 34ma se torni in città e dici ad Absalom: Io sarò tuo servo, o re; come fui servo di tuo padre nel passato, così sarò adesso servo tuo, tu dissiperai a mio pro i consigli di Ahitofel. 35E non avrai tu quivi teco i sacerdoti Tsadok ed Abiathar? Tutto quello che sentirai dire della casa del re, lo farai sapere ai sacerdoti Tsadok ed Abiathar. 36E siccome essi hanno seco i loro due figliuoli, Ahimaats figliuolo di Tsadok e Gionathan figliuolo di Abiathar, per mezzo di loro mi farete sapere tutto quello che avrete sentito". 37Così Hushai, amico di Davide, tornò in città, e Absalom entrò in Gerusalemme.
1After this, Absalom prepared him a chariot and horses, and fifty men to run before him. 2Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate. It was so, that when any man had a suit which should come to the king for judgment, then Absalom called to him, and said, “What city are you from?” He said, “Your servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.” 3Absalom said to him, “Behold, your matters are good and right; but there is no man deputized by the king to hear you.” 4Absalom said moreover, “Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man who has any suit or cause might come to me, and I would do him justice!” 5It was so, that when any man came near to do him obeisance, he stretched out his hand, and took hold of him, and kissed him. 6Absalom did this sort of thing to all Israel who came to the king for judgment. So Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. 7At the end of forty years, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to Yahweh, in Hebron. 8For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If Yahweh shall indeed bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve Yahweh.’” 9The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he arose, and went to Hebron. 10But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, then you shall say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron!’” 11Two hundred men went with Absalom out of Jerusalem, who were invited, and went in their simplicity; and they didn’t know anything. 12Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he was offering the sacrifices. The conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom. 13A messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.” 14David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom. Make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.” 15The king’s servants said to the king, “Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.” 16The king went out, and all his household after him. The king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house. 17The king went out, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak. 18All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. 19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner, and also an exile. Return to your own place. 20Whereas you came but yesterday, should I this day make you go up and down with us, since I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you.” 21Ittai answered the king, and said, “As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall is, whether for death or for life, even there also will your servant be.” 22David said to Ittai, “Go and pass over.” Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him. 23All the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness. 24Behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people finished passing out of the city. 25The king said to Zadok, “Carry back the ark of God into the city. If I find favor in the eyes of Yahweh, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation; 26but if he say thus, ‘I have no delight in you;’ behold, here am I. Let him do to me as seems good to him.” 27The king said also to Zadok the priest, “Aren’t you a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 28Behold, I will stay at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me.” 29Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem; and they stayed there. 30David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people who were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. 31Someone told David, saying, “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” David said, “Yahweh, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” 32When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn, and earth on his head. 33David said to him, “If you pass on with me, then you will be a burden to me; 34but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so will I now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’ 35Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore it shall be, that whatever thing you shall hear out of the king’s house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. 36Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send to me everything that you shall hear.” 37So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

Dat alle man tot mij kwame, die een geschil of rechtzaak heeft, dat ik hem recht sprake. 5Het geschiedde ook, als iemand naderde, om zich voor hem te buigen, zo reikte hij zijn hand uit, en greep hem, en kuste hem. 6En naar die wijze deed Absalom aan gans Israel, die tot den koning ten gerichte kwamen. Alzo stal Absalom het hart der mannen van Israel. 7Ten einde nu van veertig jaren is het geschied, dat Absalom tot den koning zeide: Laat mij toch heengaan, en mijn gelofte, die ik den HEERE beloofd heb, te Hebron betalen. 8Want uw knecht heeft een gelofte beloofd, als ik te Gesur in Syrie woonde, zeggende: Indien de HEERE mij zekerlijk weder te Jeruzalem zal brengen, zo zal ik den HEERE dienen. 9Toen zeide de koning tot hem: Ga in vrede. Alzo maakte hij zich op, en ging naar Hebron. 10Absalom nu had verspieders uitgezonden in alle stammen van Israel, om te zeggen: Als gij het geluid der bazuin zult horen, zo zult gij zeggen: Absalom is koning te Hebron. 11En er gingen met Absalom van Jeruzalem tweehonderd mannen, genodigd zijnde, doch gaande in hun eenvoudigheid, want zij wisten van geen zaak. 12Absalom zond ook om Achitofel, den Giloniet, Davids raad, uit zijn stad, uit Gilo te halen, als hij offeranden offerde. En de verbintenis werd sterk, en het volk kwam toe en vermeerderde bij Absalom. 13Toen kwam er een boodschapper tot David, zeggende: Het hart van een iegelijk in Israel volgt Absalom na. 14Zo zeide David tot al zijn knechten, die met hem te Jeruzalem waren: Maakt u op, en laat ons vlieden, want er zou voor ons geen ontkomen zijn voor Absaloms aangezicht; haast u, om weg te gaan, opdat hij niet misschien haaste, en ons achterhale, en een kwaad over ons drijve, en deze stad sla met de scherpte des zwaards. 15Toen zeiden de knechten des konings tot den koning: Naar alles, wat mijn heer de koning verkiezen zal, ziet, hier zijn uw knechten. 16En de koning ging uit met zijn ganse huis te voet; doch de koning liet tien bijwijven, om het huis te bewaren. 17Als nu de koning met al het volk te voet was uitgegaan, zo bleven zij staan in een verre plaats. 18En al zijn knechten gingen aan zijn zijde heen, ook al de Krethi en al de Plethi, en al de Gethieten, zeshonderd man, die van Gath te voet gekomen waren, gingen voor des konings aangezicht heen. 19Zo zeide de koning tot Ithai, den Gethiet: Waarom zoudt gij ook met ons gaan? Keer weder, en blijf bij den koning; want gij zijt vreemd, en ook zult gij weder vertrekken naar uw plaats. 20Gisteren zijt gij gekomen, en heden zou ik u met ons omvoeren om te gaan? Zo ik toch gaan moet, waarheen ik gaan kan, keer weder; en breng uw broederen wederom; weldadigheid en trouw zij met u. 21Maar Ithai antwoordde den koning, en zeide: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, en mijn heer de koning leeft, in de plaats, waar mijn heer de koning zal zijn, hetzij ten dode, hetzij ten leven, daar zal uw knecht voorzeker ook zijn! 22Toen zeide David tot Ithai: Zo kom, en ga over. Alzo ging Ithai, de Gethiet, over, en al zijn mannen, en al de kinderen die met hem waren. 23En het ganse land weende met luider stem, als al het volk overging; ook ging de koning over de beek Kidron, en al het volk ging over, recht naar den weg der woestijn. 24En ziet, Zadok was ook daar, en al de Levieten met hem, dragende de ark des verbonds van God, en zij zetten de ark Gods neder; en Abjathar klom op, totdat al het volk uit de stad geeindigd had over te gaan. 25Toen zeide de koning tot Zadok: Breng de ark Gods weder in de stad; indien ik genade zal vinden in des HEEREN ogen, zo zal Hij mij wederhalen, en zal ze mij laten zien, mitsgaders Zijn woning. 26Maar indien Hij alzo zal zeggen: Ik heb geen lust tot u; zie, hier ben ik, Hij doe mij, zo als het in Zijn ogen goed is. 27Voorts zeide de koning tot den priester Zadok: Zijt gij niet een ziener? Keer weder in de stad met vrede; ook ulieder beide zonen, Ahimaaz, uw zoon, en Jonathan, Abjathars zoon, met u. 28Zie, ik zal vertoeven in de vlakke velden der woestijn, totdat er een woord van ulieden kome, dat men mij aanzegge. 29Alzo bracht Zadok, en Abjathar, de ark Gods weder te Jeruzalem, en zij bleven aldaar. 30En David ging op door den opgang der olijven, opgaande en wenende, en het hoofd was hem bewonden; en hij zelf ging barrevoets; ook had al het volk, dat met hem was, een iegelijk zijn hoofd bedekt, en zij gingen op, opgaande en wenende. 31Toen gaf men David te kennen, zeggende: Achitofel is onder degenen, die zich met Absalom hebben verbonden. Dies zeide David: O, HEERE! maak toch Achitofels raad tot zotheid. 32En het geschiedde, als David tot op de hoogte kwam, dat hij aldaar God aanbad; ziet, toen ontmoette hem Husai, de Archiet, hebbende zijn rok gescheurd, en aarde op zijn hoofd. 33En David zeide tot hem: Zo gij met mij voortgaat, zo zult gij mij tot een last zijn; 34Maar zo gij weder in de stad gaat, en tot Absalom zegt: Uw knecht, ik zal des konings zijn; ik ben wel uws vaders knecht van te voren geweest, maar nu zal ik uw knecht zijn; zo zoudt gij mij den raad van Achitofel te niet maken. 35En zijn niet Zadok en Abjathar, de priesters, aldaar met u? Zo zal het geschieden, dat gij alle ding, dat gij uit des konings huis zult horen, den priesteren, Zadok en Abjathar, zult te kennen geven. 36Ziet, hun beide zonen zijn aldaar bij hen, Ahimaaz, Zadoks, en Jonathan, Abjathars zoon; zo zult gijlieden door hun hand tot mij zenden alle ding, dat gij zult horen. 37Alzo kwam Husai, Davids vriend, in de stad; en Absalom kwam te Jeruzalem.
