1E l’Eterno mandò Nathan a Davide; e Nathan andò da lui e gli disse: "V’erano due uomini nella stessa città, uno ricco, e l’altro povero. 2Il ricco avea pecore e buoi in grandissimo numero; 3ma il povero non aveva nulla, fuorché una piccola agnellina ch’egli avea comprata e allevata; essa gli era cresciuta in casa insieme ai figliuoli, mangiando il pane di lui, bevendo alla sua coppa e dormendo sul suo seno; ed essa era per lui come una figliuola. 4Or essendo arrivato un viaggiatore a casa dell’uomo ricco, questi, risparmiando le sue pecore e i suoi buoi, non ne prese per preparare un pasto al viaggiatore ch’era capitato da lui; ma pigliò l’agnella di quel povero uomo, e ne fece delle vivande per colui che gli era venuto in casa". 5Allora l’ira di Davide s’accese fortemente contro quell’uomo, e disse a Nathan: "Com’è vero che l’Eterno vive, colui che ha fatto questo merita la morte; 6e pagherà quattro volte il valore dell’agnella, per aver fatto una tal cosa e non aver avuto pietà". 7Allora Nathan disse a Davide: "Tu sei quell’uomo! Così dice l’Eterno, l’Iddio d’Israele: Io t’ho unto re d’Israele e t’ho liberato dalle mani di Saul, 8t’ho dato la casa del tuo signore, e ho messo nelle tue braccia le donne del tuo signore; t’ho dato la casa d’Israele e di Giuda; e, se questo era troppo poco, io v’avrei aggiunto anche dell’altro. 9Perché dunque hai tu disprezzata la parola dell’Eterno, facendo ciò ch’è male agli occhi suoi? Tu hai fatto morire colla spada Uria lo Hitteo, hai preso per tua moglie la moglie sua, e hai ucciso lui con la spada dei figliuoli di Ammon. 10Or dunque la spada non si allontanerà mai dalla tua casa, giacché tu m’hai disprezzato hai preso per tua moglie la moglie di Uria lo Hitteo. 11Così dice l’Eterno: Ecco, io sto per suscitare contro di te la sciagura dalla tua stessa casa, e prenderò le tue mogli sotto i tuoi occhi per darle a un tuo prossimo, che si giacerà con esse in faccia a questo sole; 12poiché tu l’hai fatto in segreto; ma io farò questo davanti a tutto Israele e in faccia al sole". 13Allora Davide disse a Nathan: "Ho peccato contro l’Eterno". E Nathan rispose a Davide: "E l’Eterno ha perdonato il tuo peccato; tu non morrai. 14Nondimeno, siccome facendo così tu hai data ai nemici dell’Eterno ampia occasione di bestemmiare, il figliuolo che t’è nato dovrà morire". Nathan se ne tornò a casa sua. 15E l’Eterno colpì il bambino che la moglie di Uria avea partorito a Davide, ed esso cadde gravemente ammalato. 16Davide quindi fece supplicazioni a Dio per il bambino, e digiunò; poi venne e passò la notte giacendo per terra. 17Gli anziani della sua casa insistettero presso di lui perch’egli si levasse da terra; ma egli non volle, e rifiutò di prender cibo con essi. 18Or avvenne che il settimo giorno il bambino morì; e i servi di Davide temevano di fargli sapere che il bambino era morto; poiché dicevano: "Ecco, quando il bambino era ancora vivo, noi gli abbiam parlato ed egli non ha dato ascolto alle nostre parole; come faremo ora a dirgli che il bambino è morto? Quelli risposero: "E’ morto". 20Allora Davide si alzò da terra, si lavò, si unse e si mutò le vesti; poi andò nella casa dell’Eterno e vi si prostrò; e tornato a casa sua, chiese che gli portassero da mangiare, e mangiò. 21I suoi servi gli dissero: "Che cosa fai? Quando il bambino era vivo ancora, tu digiunavi e piangevi; e ora ch’è morto, ti alzi e mangi!" 22Egli rispose: "Quando il bambino era vivo ancora, digiunavo e piangevo, perché dicevo: Chi sa che l’Eterno non abbia pietà di me e il bambino non resti in vita? Ma ora ch’egli è morto, perché digiunerei? 23Posso io farlo ritornare? Io me ne andrò a lui, ma egli non ritornerà a me!" 24Poi Davide consolò Bath-Sheba sua moglie, entrò da lei e si giacque con essa; ed ella partorì un figliuolo, al quale egli pose nome Salomone. 25L’Eterno amò Salomone e mandò il profeta Nathan che gli pose nome Iedidia, a motivo dell’amore che l’Eterno gli portava. 26Or Joab assediò Rabba dei figliuoli di Ammon, s’impadronì della città reale, 27e inviò dei messi a Davide per dirgli: "Ho assalito Rabba e mi son già impossessato della città delle acque. 28Or dunque raduna il rimanente del popolo, accampati contro la città, e prendila, affinché, prendendola io, non abbia a portare il mio nome". 29Davide radunò tutto il popolo, si mosse verso Rabba, l’assalì e la prese; 30e tolse dalla testa del loro re la corona, che pesava un talento d’oro e conteneva pietre preziose, ed essa fu posta sulla testa di Davide. Egli riporto anche dalla città grandissima preda. 31Fece uscire gli abitanti ch’erano nella città, e mise i loro corpi sotto delle seghe, degli erpici di ferro e delle scuri di ferro, e li fe’ gettare in fornaci da mattoni; e così fece a tutte le città de’ figliuoli di Ammon. Poi Davide se ne tornò a Gerusalemme con tutto il popolo.
1Yahweh sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor. 2The rich man had very many flocks and herds, 3but the poor man had nothing, except one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and raised. It grew up together with him, and with his children. It ate of his own food, drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was to him like a daughter. 4A traveler came to the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man who had come to him, but took the poor man’s lamb, and dressed it for the man who had come to him.” 5David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man, and he said to Nathan, “As Yahweh lives, the man who has done this is worthy to die! 6He shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity!” 7Nathan said to David, “You are the man. This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul. 8I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that would have been too little, I would have added to you many more such things. 9Why have you despised Yahweh’s word, to do that which is evil in his sight? You have struck Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. 10Now therefore the sword will never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11“This is what Yahweh says: ‘Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he will lie with your wives in the sight of this sun. 12For you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.’” 13David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against Yahweh.” Nathan said to David, “Yahweh also has put away your sin. You will not die. 14However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to Yahweh’s enemies to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.” 15Nathan departed to his house. Yahweh struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it was very sick. 16David therefore begged God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night on the earth. 17The elders of his house arose beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them. 18On the seventh day, the child died. The servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, “Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spoke to him, and he didn’t listen to our voice. How will he then harm himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?” 19But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, “Is the child dead?” They said, “He is dead.” 20Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into Yahweh’s house, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate. 21Then his servants said to him, “What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread.” 22He said, “While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?’ 23But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.” 24David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him; 25and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh’s sake. 26Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27Joab sent messengers to David, and said, “I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters. 28Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.” 29David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. 30He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and in it were precious stones; and it was set on David’s head. He brought out the plunder of the city, exceeding much. 31He brought out the people who were therein, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln: and he did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

Als die tot hem inkwam, zeide hij tot hem: Er waren twee mannen in een stad, de een rijk en de ander arm. 2De rijke had zeer veel schapen en runderen. 3Maar de arme had gans niet dan een enig klein ooilam, dat hij gekocht had, en had het gevoed, dat het groot geworden was bij hem, en bij zijn kinderen tegelijk; het at van zijn bete, en dronk van zijn beker, en sliep in zijn schoot, en het was hem als een dochter. 4Toen nu den rijken man een wandelaar overkwam, verschoonde hij te nemen van zijn schapen en van zijn runderen, om voor den reizenden man, die tot hem gekomen was, wat te bereiden; en hij nam des armen mans ooilam, en bereidde dat voor den man, die tot hem gekomen was. 5Toen ontstak Davids toorn zeer tegen dien man; en hij zeide tot Nathan: Zo waarachtig als de HEERE leeft, de man, die dat gedaan heeft, is een kind des doods! 6En dat ooilam zal hij viervoudig wedergeven, daarom dat hij deze zaak gedaan, en omdat hij niet verschoond heeft. 7Toen zeide Nathan tot David: Gij zijt die man! Zo zegt de HEERE, de God Israels: Ik heb u ten koning gezalfd over Israel, en Ik heb u uit Sauls hand gered; 8En Ik heb u uws heren huis gegeven, daartoe uws heren vrouwen in uw schoot, ja, Ik heb u het huis van Israel en Juda gegeven; en indien het weinig is, Ik zou u alzulks en alzulks daartoe doen. 9Waarom hebt gij dan het woord des HEEREN veracht, doende wat kwaad is in Zijn ogen? Gij hebt Uria, den Hethiet, met het zwaard verslagen, en zijn huisvrouw hebt gij u ter vrouwe genomen; en hem hebt gij met het zwaard van de kinderen Ammons doodgeslagen. 10Nu dan, het zwaard zal van uw huis niet afwijken tot in eeuwigheid; daarom dat gij Mij veracht hebt, en de huisvrouw van Uria, den Hethiet, genomen hebt, dat zij u ter vrouwe zij. 11Zo zegt de HEERE: Zie, Ik zal kwaad over u verwekken uit uw huis, en zal uw vrouwen nemen voor uw ogen, en zal haar aan uw naaste geven; die zal bij uw vrouwen liggen, voor de ogen dezer zon. 12Want gij hebt het in het verborgen gedaan; maar Ik zal deze zaak doen voor gans Israel, en voor de zon. 13Toen zeide David tot Nathan: Ik heb gezondigd tegen den HEERE! En Nathan zeide tot David: De HEERE heeft ook uw zonde weggenomen, gij zult niet sterven. 14Nochtans, dewijl gij door deze zaak de vijanden des HEEREN grotelijks hebt doen lasteren, zal ook de zoon, die u geboren is, den dood sterven. 15Toen ging Nathan naar zijn huis. En de HEERE sloeg het kind, dat de huisvrouw van Uria David gebaard had, dat het zeer krank werd. 16En David zocht God voor dat jongsken; en David vastte een vasten, en ging in, en lag den nacht over op de aarde. 17Toen maakten zich de oudsten van zijn huis op tot hem, om hem te doen opstaan van de aarde; maar hij wilde niet, en at geen brood met hen. 18En het geschiedde op den zevenden dag, dat het kind stierf; en Davids knechten vreesden hem aan te zeggen, dat het kind dood was, want zij zeiden: Ziet, als het kind nog levend was, spraken wij tot hem, maar hij hoorde naar onze stem niet, hoe zullen wij dan tot hem zeggen: Het kind is dood? Want het mocht kwaad doen. 19Maar David zag, dat zijn knechten mompelden; zo merkte David, dat het kind dood was. Dies zeide David tot zijn knechten: Is het kind dood? En zij zeiden: Het is dood. 20Toen stond David op van de aarde, en wies en zalfde zich, en veranderde zijn kleding, en ging in het huis des HEEREN, en bad aan; daarna kwam hij in zijn huis, en eiste brood; en zij zetten hem brood voor, en hij at. 21Zo zeiden zijn knechten tot hem: Wat is dit voor een ding, dat gij gedaan hebt? Ik zal wel tot hem gaan, maar hij zal tot mij niet wederkomen. 24Daarna troostte David zijn huisvrouw Bathseba, en ging tot haar in, en lag bij haar; en zij baarde een zoon, wiens naam zij noemde Salomo; en de HEERE had hem lief. 25En zond heen door de hand van den profeet Nathan, en noemde zijn naam Jedid-Jah, om des HEEREN wil. 26Joab nu krijgde tegen Rabba der kinderen Ammons; en hij nam de koninklijke stad in. 27Toen zond Joab boden tot David, en zeide: Ik heb gekrijgd tegen Rabba, ook heb ik de waterstad ingenomen. 28Zo verzamel gij nu het overige des volks, en beleger de stad, en neem ze in; opdat niet, zo ik de stad zou innemen, mijn naam over haar uitgeroepen worde. 29Toen verzamelde David al dat volk, en toog naar Rabba; en hij krijgde tegen haar, en nam ze in. 30En hij nam de kroon haars konings van zijn hoofd af, welker gewicht was een talent gouds, met edelgesteente, en zij werd op Davids hoofd gezet; ook voerde hij uit een zeer groten roof der stad. 31Het volk nu, dat daarin was, voerde hij uit, en legde het onder zagen, en onder ijzeren dorswagens, en onder ijzeren bijlen, en deed hen door den ticheloven doorgaan; en alzo deed hij aan alle steden der kinderen Ammons. Daarna keerde David, en al het volk, weder naar Jeruzalem.
